Exactly, I had a dude tell me diversity needs to be proportional to the gaming community. When I pointed out LGBTQ makes up about 17% of the community; women make up 43%; and POC make up about half and that diversity continues to be lower in games than the people who consume these things he had the dumb idea to say well based on the population of the country they are made in... which then still brings representation to a lower number. When I called that number out, he said the last of us 2 is too diverse compared to the actual representation of poc and gays in the USA... at that point I stopped caring lol

The reality is that the "woke" games that do bad are usually bad games that are either horribly written or just bad mechanically. If they tried for 1.5 seconds they could find "woke" games with great writing like Disco Elysium or something but that would hurt their worldview.

One piece is actually amazing except for the designs of the female characters. It feels like those Barbie modeling games where all you do is change the clothes and accessories because they all have the same body type. The only exceptions I can remember are that one grandma in water 7 and Big Mom

I remember no one really caring about Alita Battle Angel - until Captain Marvel came out, and then all of a sudden Alita was "how a movie with a female protagonist SHOULD be made." Don't get me wrong, I think it Alita was fine, but it didn't get a surge in popularity and appreciation until it could be used as a cudgel against a movie they didn't like.
I actually cared about alita battle angel back then before marvel, because I was a fan of anime, but yeah for me personally it was not about women in media and more so that the character of captain marvel just felt flat and her actions was just questionable, decent movie 5/10 but it could have been better. For alita battle angel, I liked the movie way more when it was released until I read the manga, there was better things in the movie than the manga, but the movie merging 2 arcs into one made everything a bit too rushed, hunter warrior arc in manga was way more detailed than the movie.
I try to have faith in my fellow humans. I dont like to just assume people are stupid and beyond reason, I find that perspective to be reductive, misanthropic, and overly nihilistic... Literal slavic goddess in the witcher 4 trailer. Although the books don't state that she is ugly, they don't comment on her looks past the broad strokes like her hair, eye colour. Yes Yen calls her 'ugly one' but that has some lost meaning being translated from the original polish and Ciri and Yen have a conversation about the nickname were Yen tells ciri that it is just a nickname and that she is pretty, cute moment in the books since its one of the few times Yen is plainly affectionate and not letting her wit/sarcasm be a buffer. Sorry about the lore dump I really love the witcher 😅

Heck, two of my favourite games were Midwinter 1 and 2 from the 16-bit era, where you're first defending your home against fascist invaders and then playing a spy who's liberating the other island nations controlled by said fascists.

One of the main themes of the novel is the ridiculous nature of organized religion and the societal expectations they force on us. The whole point of giving yaoguais sexualized forms is to laugh at how even monsters and animals have to abide to these random rules. The game carries the same criticism of organized religion, and the anti-woke people, SOMEHOW, find it perfectly acceptable? Honestly I genuinely feel sorry for a lot of the "anti woke" crowd. I really do. They fill themselves with so much hate, yet cant see what hate is doing to them. It hollows them out and fills them with even more hate until suddenly, that's their entire identity. And all they can see anywhere they look is more stuff to hate. And it gets to the point of being just so bizarrely obsessive, too. Like, I'm trans, and I only fairly recently came out to family and friends and whatnot and havent started transition yet, which means that gender is on my mind pretty often. But a lot of the "anti woke" crowd somehow manage to care about gender way, way, WAY more than I do. Like I'm capable of having conversations without even briefly mentioning it. But they often arent. Or there's incidents like, what's his name, HeelVSBabyFace, is that right? The guy who had a ridiculous screaming fit because Starfield had a tiny little unobtrusive option to choose pronouns, just so more people could feel immersed in their role-playing game. And the guy just absolutely loses his freaking mind. Like, a big video game that he had been really looking forward to came out, it should be a happy exciting time, but one tiny little inclusion ruins it for him. Wait, no, that's not accurate. The tiny little inclusion causes him to ruin it for himself. All because of hate. I mean good grief, it must just be so exhausting to be so hateful and angry ALL THE TIME. How can someone even function in that state? On a side note, I gotta say, I agree with the "gaming is better than ever" bit. I mostly focus on indie games (but really I'll try anything) and there's so much incredible stuff that I can barely even believe it. In every possible genre, too. Including genres that didnt exist a few years ago.

Its really funny that they latched onto BMW because that’s probably the most woke game on the lineup. Its about the corruption present in religious and governmental institutions and how yearning to be free or different is punished with dehumanizing treatment and violence. The main character is constantly profiled and degraded, mistaken for a famous person of his same race, and forced to work within a system that actively exploits and harms him throughout the game. The female leads are either stronger than the lead or suffer under the system and fight the protagonist because they can’t fight the oppressive system. The gender ambiguity of shapeshifting, the homoerotic tension between wukong and erlang shen, the classist narrative pushed by the game’s villains, its all so very woke. And lets not mention that the hottest characters in the game are either the elderly woman, they gay man, or the monkeys. Thats very woke and based. Should’ve won GOTY tho.

Tbh I agree, but it's done way too much a lot of the time. A good example of representation would be like, ghost of tsushima; lots of great, strong, female protagonists who are good characters and don't just feel written in. Another example would be the last of us, lots of great gay representation from strong characters and it's not shoved in your face. (This is coming from a gay guy btw).
Alot of the time it is poorly done and the characters feel shoehorned in just to check a demographic off a list and not because they actually care about that group so it feels like that the characters with these traits entire personality is im a minority or im trans instead of being real characters
@AlexA-ie5zv but that's the thing... Representation isn't always going to be perfect. As a queer woman, I want good AND bad representation (as long as it isn't offensive lmao ). Queer and other marginalised characters should be able to exist, whether good or bad, without their identity being the biggest target for criticism. Besides, companies are always trying to cater to certain audiences. Earlier games had huge s3x appeal catered towards men, because companies believed videogames were only a guy thing. Now times have changed, and we're seeing more accurate representations of women after companies realised women enjoy gaming just as much. As much as we sh!t on companies, they are what bring the most popular media we know now into the mainstream. Being able to see ourselves, in the mainstream, no matter how "cringe" the representation is, is extremely comforting. For Example: Mortal Kombat's Kitana was an extremely p3v3rted and overs3xualised CONCEPT of what the original Netherrealm team thought a woman to be, yet still, plenty of women (like myself), identified with her and latched onto her character. I believe companies are extremely out of touch, but we are directing our anger towards the wrong things... Be mad at the heads of these companies, not the writers. Instead of going "writing bad", perhaps consider why it was that way. More often than not, it's because of time constrictions, toxic work environment, the shutting down of creative ideas, layoffs or company policy. Companies know that people will always blame the writers or devs before they blame the people in charge. They are a scapegoat for the real issue .... (Also just wanna say I'm tired AF after an 8 hour work day, so idk if this makes any sense. But thanks for reading this far if you have.)

The mixed-race deuteragonist is more like an effort at checking a box than writing a fully fleshed out character? Yeah, there's a reason for that. Very often the cause of bad "woke" characters in media is because they are written by people who just don't get it. Men are notoriously bad at writing women characters, especially in books. Your average dudebro in some dev team probably has zero clue about what it is to be trans. And so on. If you look at great examples of representation it usually comes from individuals who themselves have it as a lived experience. Not exclusively, and being from a marginalized group doesn't mean you're guaranteed to write a good character from that group but it's rare that a writer has insight into these experiences unless they have personally been through them (or at least something analogous.)

Hell, the game begins with you being arrested because of your race, and then watching another guy get executed because of his race (all of this is legit within the first 2 hours) Oh btw, because of uni, I haven’t even been able to play past the first 2 hours. Yes Geralt is the main character, but the story really is about Ciri. If Sapkowski were to ever write another story it would have been about Ciri.

Funny thing is, people say games back then were way better, but no, we had the same distribution of bad vs good games back then as we do today. There were just as many broken games in the 90s as there are now. Look at Daggerfall. I love Daggerfall, i think it's perfect for roleplaying, but without Daggerfall Unity, that game would be nigh on impossible to play these days. Or look at the first pokemon game, that one is RIDDLED with game breaking bugs. Games were not better optimized back then either, it was just as bad. If you immediately assume the game is bad because woman protagonist, you're a bona fide loser. I don't recall people getting upset that Samus is a woman. Or Chell from Portal. Is it because they don't talk? Samus basically tore an alien bird apart with her bare hands in Dread, how is that not sick as hell? If the games do end up sucking it's not gonna be because the protagonists are women, it would be because the teams failed at making them interesting or compelling. Nothing to do with women, uncompelling male protagonists exist as well.

Black Myth Wukong was mid at best. If I wanted to play a game based on journey to the west I would play DBZ Kakarot. Also as someone who also doesn't give a fuck about awards shows, I honestly just base the games I wanna play on whether or not it looks fun for me.
I'mma be honest, Black Myth Wukong wasnt even better than any of it's competition for best action game. BMW is the definition of a beautiful looking dish that tastes extremely bland. Stellar Blade at least was stupid, had mixed gameplay styles, and better bosses. Exactly, I had a dude tell me diversity needs to be proportional to the gaming community. When I pointed out LGBTQ makes up about 17% of the community; women make up 43%; and POC make up about half and that diversity continues to be lower in games than the people who consume these things he had the dumb idea to say well based on the population of the country they are made in... which then still brings representation to a lower number.
When I called that number out, he said the last of us 2 is too diverse compared to the actual representation of poc and gays in the USA... at that point I stopped caring lol

I remember no one really caring about Alita Battle Angel - until Captain Marvel came out, and then all of a sudden Alita was "how a movie with a female protagonist SHOULD be made." Don't get me wrong, I think it Alita was fine, but it didn't get a surge in popularity and appreciation until it could be used as a cudgel against a movie they didn't like.
I actually cared about alita battle angel back then before marvel, because I was a fan of anime, but yeah for me personally it was not about women in media and more so that the character of captain marvel just felt flat and her actions was just questionable, decent movie 5/10 but it could have been better.
For alita battle angel, I liked the movie way more when it was released until I read the manga, there was better things in the movie than the manga, but the movie merging 2 arcs into one made everything a bit too rushed, hunter warrior arc in manga was way more detailed than the movie.
They really tried to pit two baddies against each other. Got forbid two women be cool at once

Yes Yen calls her 'ugly one' but that has some lost meaning being translated from the original polish and Ciri and Yen have a conversation about the nickname were Yen tells ciri that it is just a nickname and that she is pretty, cute moment in the books since its one of the few times Yen is plainly affectionate and not letting her wit/sarcasm be a buffer. The game carries the same criticism of organized religion, and the anti-woke people, SOMEHOW, find it perfectly acceptable? Honestly I genuinely feel sorry for a lot of the "anti woke" crowd. I really do. They fill themselves with so much hate, yet cant see what hate is doing to them. Its about the corruption present in religious and governmental institutions and how yearning to be free or different is punished with dehumanizing treatment and violence. The main character is constantly profiled and degraded, mistaken for a famous person of his same race, and forced to work within a system that actively exploits and harms him throughout the game.
The female leads are either stronger than the lead or suffer under the system and fight the protagonist because they can’t fight the oppressive system.
The gender ambiguity of shapeshifting, the homoerotic tension between wukong and erlang shen, the classist narrative pushed by the game’s villains, its all so very woke. And lets not mention that the hottest characters in the game are either the elderly woman, they gay man, or the monkeys. Thats very woke and based.

Tbh I agree, but it's done way too much a lot of the time. A good example of representation would be like, ghost of tsushima; lots of great, strong, female protagonists who are good characters and don't just feel written in. Another example would be the last of us, lots of great gay representation from strong characters and it's not shoved in your face. (This is coming from a gay guy btw).
Alot of the time it is poorly done and the characters feel shoehorned in just to check a demographic off a list and not because they actually care about that group so it feels like that the characters with these traits entire personality is im a minority or im trans instead of being real characters

Queer and other marginalised characters should be able to exist, whether good or bad, without their identity being the biggest target for criticism. Besides, companies are always trying to cater to certain audiences. Earlier games had huge s3x appeal catered towards men, because companies believed videogames were only a guy thing. Now times have changed, and we're seeing more accurate representations of women after companies realised women enjoy gaming just as much.
As much as we sh!t on companies, they are what bring the most popular media we know now into the mainstream. Being able to see ourselves, in the mainstream, no matter how "cringe" the representation is, is extremely comforting.
For Example: Mortal Kombat's Kitana was an extremely p3v3rted and overs3xualised CONCEPT of what the original Netherrealm team thought a woman to be, yet still, plenty of women (like myself), identified with her and latched onto her character.
I believe companies are extremely out of touch, but we are directing our anger towards the wrong things... Be mad at the heads of these companies, not the writers. Instead of going "writing bad", perhaps consider why it was that way. More often than not, it's because of time constrictions, toxic work environment, the shutting down of creative ideas, layoffs or company policy. Companies know that people will always blame the writers or devs before they blame the people in charge. They are a scapegoat for the real issue ....

Very often the cause of bad "woke" characters in media is because they are written by people who just don't get it. Men are notoriously bad at writing women characters, especially in books. Your average dudebro in some dev team probably has zero clue about what it is to be trans. And so on.
If you look at great examples of representation it usually comes from individuals who themselves have it as a lived experience. Not exclusively, and being from a marginalized group doesn't mean you're guaranteed to write a good character from that group but it's rare that a writer has insight into these experiences unless they have personally been through them (or at least something analogous.)

Metaphor is pretty freaking woke by conservatives’ standards. Hell, the game begins with you being arrested because of your race, and then watching another guy get executed because of his race (all of this is legit within the first 2 hours)

She is basically the chosen one and the entire story is basically about a mentally and physically scarred lonely man finding peace through raising this chosen woman. Yes Geralt is the main character, but the story really is about Ciri. If Sapkowski were to ever write another story it would have been about Ciri.

Check out Knight 10something. He does intelligent content defending Dragon Age including Veilguard. Mapocyclos is also doing a playthrough of the game and although he has some legit criticism of it he's very even handed about what he likes about it and his comments section is chill too.

Funny thing is, people say games back then were way better, but no, we had the same distribution of bad vs good games back then as we do today. There were just as many broken games in the 90s as there are now. Look at Daggerfall. I love Daggerfall, i think it's perfect for roleplaying, but without Daggerfall Unity, that game would be nigh on impossible to play these days. Or look at the first pokemon game, that one is RIDDLED with game breaking bugs. Games were not better optimized back then either, it was just as bad.

If you immediately assume the game is bad because woman protagonist, you're a bona fide loser. I don't recall people getting upset that Samus is a woman. Or Chell from Portal. Is it because they don't talk? Samus basically tore an alien bird apart with her bare hands in Dread, how is that not sick as hell?
If the games do end up sucking it's not gonna be because the protagonists are women, it would be because the teams failed at making them interesting or compelling. Nothing to do with women, uncompelling male protagonists exist as well.

I'mma be honest, Black Myth Wukong wasnt even better than any of it's competition for best action game. BMW is the definition of a beautiful looking dish that tastes extremely bland. Stellar Blade at least was stupid, had mixed gameplay styles, and better bosses. So the CEO of the studio coming down expecting GOTY was absolutely high on his own farts and so are the people mad that Astro Bot, a super creative game filled with diverse gameplay and amazing stylized visuals, won.
