Preparing Liquid Crystals

- Liquid Crystals are synthesized using cholesteryl pelargonate and cholesteryl oleyl carbonate. The two chemicals are mixed and melted together. The resulting mixture will undergo a phase transition just above room temperature into the liquid crystal state. The range for liquid crystal state is slim, and above a higher temperature the mixture results in a liquid. Varying amounts of each chemical will adjust the exact range of temperatures for the liquid crystal phase.

Super!
Thanks for that!
which chemical are used for switchable glass ?
Does it have any physical properties other than colour change?
How to make colour liquid crystal
Hello, Scott. Since several years I've been trying to make a small smart window, with two layers of glass and some sort of liquid inside that could be excited with electrodes, and in this way make it transparent or opaque. I know it has been invented, but anyway, I want to make it on my own. Any suggestion? Thanks a Lot!
I'm looking for the same shit, did you get any luck?
Epic!!
Hey Scott! I'm wondering if I can use these liquid crystals to make a pendant necklace? The necklace uses wood, puts the crystal on top of said wood for drying, and uses poly glass to hold it in shape until dry and firm. Would the liquid crystal be okay on a wood surface?
What does it taste like? Also, how much money for you to drink a shot glass amount of the mixture?

how do i cite this?
I did my EE on a variation of this.
are these the type used in LCD displays?
I don't know which specific liquid crystals are used, usually biphenyl nitriles are used because they are polar (controlled easily with voltages) and with a good shape to use. The chemicals used are Cholesteryl oleyl carbonate and cholesteryl pelargonate in this experiment.
Thank you for the info! at least I can research that, just 'liquid crystal' was a pretty broad search term that I was using :)
Liquid crystals used in lcd displays are usually (5CB) .
What is 5CB?
