When I first encountered this (it landed on my chest), I thought it was some alien mutation of a housefly... until I noticed it was feeding on an actual housefly. In my panic I can't remember if I killed it or not, but I did get it the hell off me. It's pretty cool that there are aerial hunters among insects.
This is an amazing creature. I'm a huge bug nerd and pretty much what every insect and arachnid is. About 10 years ago I saw a Robber Fly for the first time and freaked out. I was like..."Why are it's feet and head so big?" I never thought to take a pic with my phone and upload it to my pc to do a Google search because I'm apparently slow. Now that my LG Wing has Google Lens I identified it and took the most amazing pic with prey in it's mouth. I so wish I could upload it in this comment.
I have always been fascinated with Robber Flies, i call them Wasp Killers because thats what i see them do all the time in my backyard. They are the “Mig-25” of the insect world!
Hi In summer I’ve noticed ordinary flies outside waiting on a ledge. They take off and seemingly capture something and then return to their post. Can you you tell me please, what are they catching as I can’t see anything at all - microscopic? Thanks for the video it’s fascinating. Colin

Wow! I didn’t know that about their eyes. Great video! 😁

Lovely and interesting
Imagine little explosive drones just sitting in trees waiting to ambush the first human they detect
We need Real healthcare. not more robots. But yes, amazing creature/creation.
