The problem i have with computer matte paintings is that they have TOO MUCH detail. If you go and look at Albert Whitlock's matte paintings close up you'll see that what you think is detail is really just a mish mash of brush strokes. Its very french impressionist. Seen close up his paintings kind of fall apart. When you step back to the camera it comes together. What he mastered was the sense of how light plays on surfaces. Not so much detail. Computer matte paintings have too much needless detail.
