Years since I first read about Trennie, but I think there was even an issue about parents knowing much about this trip.
regarding Derek. it sounds like a person in a manic phase. you do things with no rational reason. you go on a buying spree with the intention to do this grandiose thing, then you get there and you're so distraught that you change your plans. there is no rhyme or reason. It sounds like all the hallmarks of a person who is suicidal, who is desperate. there are thousands of people who wander into the woods never to be seen. a lot of them planned it that way.
I agree. People who commit suicide usually organise things before hand. It's not a spur of the moment decision. Both my sister and husband died by suicide and they went out of their way to organise things and made sure they would only be found after they died.
I agree and think this demonstrates manic thoughts. Before my late husband committed suicide, he had a great deal of difficulty in problem solving and a lack of clarity.
Yip sounds a lot like it. It could also be that he decided to run away to get a new identity somewhere else but just in a manic manner. So no goog planning and changeing the course constantly.

Story # 1 Derek chose to do this. If the note was in his handwriting there is no foul play . He obviously was suffering depression. The alcohol found at his apartment further enforces my theory. He purchased much equipment then decided no need for it and it may make him easier to find.

He might have been just wanting to see how long he could survive in the woods and decided to go a little more hard-core and leave his tent behind.
Is there any evidence of him actually entering the forest at all? I think he might have wanted to disappear and start a new life somewhere else. Maybe someone picked him up at the car park and he just wanted to make it look like he went into the forest and took his life.

If the dogs, several different teams, were brought in that quickly, followed her scent, then stopped and lost it, then she was picked up.

The fact that Sheila had just came from a party that was full of people getting ready to leave the area the next day makes me believe that someone else had something to do with her death. With her bones being scattered when found doesn't mean much because it was months later and typically animals will take advantage of a free meal in the winter time and like you said if it was an animal that attacked her that close to the cabin area there would of been other sightings of this animal just based on how animals tend to act. If they that desperate for food to come that close to humans and was able to get a meal out of it they most definitely would continue to try again at least until other options were made available or until mating season where they will travel farther away in search of a mate. I just have this guy feeling someone is to blame for her death.

Unfortunately for this specific theory, bears ARE sighted near Paradise Inn all the time. I myself have seen one there, in a field within mere yards of the inn itself. Unless you go off-trail in the woods at night with heat-seeking googles, you might never see one. The bear I saw was an older juvenile feeding in the afternoon, and not yet wise enough to avoid being spotted by humans.
@@jeanvignes Black bears are what's found at Mt Rainier and generally in the PNW Cascades, and they do not really pose much threat. There have only been some like 55 or so confirmed cases of black bears killing a human in the last 100 or more years, or some statistic like that. The MyLifeOutdoors hiking channel made a video on that a while back and mentioned that stat.
Of course. A wahmen would never do something dumm like go on a winter hike the next day or two (three days between the party and her next work shift) and freeze to death. We all know the wahmen are always being preyed after and never make dumm decisions.

In my opinion, it's only Trinny's disappearance is really a mystery. The idea that anyone would just be lurking off that trail in the woods waiting to lure a teen-ager into the wilderness is just insane. Her classmates saw her step off the trail where there was nowhere to go. If it was a cougar or bear attack, there would have been physical evidence. The other option in my mind is that the classmates who said they saw her step off the trail were, in fact, lying, and that they had been bullying her, forcing her to run off the trail into the woods where she became lost, and she was later picked up on the access road. As to Sheila, the FBI has never released the autopsy evidence that led them to believe she was murdered. Walking back to her residence at night after the party, she could have been snagged by a fellow park worker, or by a cougar. They stopped looking too soon, and her remains had been in the snow all winter.
I say Trinny could have planned to meet a boyfriend or, that she got turned around, and finally stumbled onto a road, in the Smokeys; just like I did. The person who stopped to render aid was a killer.
Haven't got to this story yet so idk if it gets mentioned, but I had watched another video on Trinny a while ago. Her brother's friend had apparently made some uncomfortable advances on her and she rejected him. I honestly have money that he did something to her. It just seems odd she'd reject him and then suddenly vanish into thin air.
(Unless I'm thinking of another girl who disappeared under very similar circumstances, but I'm almost positive it was her)
It’s not that someone purposefully went to that riddled area and wandered around looking for someone to kill - they most likely were hiking and stumbled upon as easy victim and their bad instincts kicked in
From a longer video on it her behaviour sounds like she had to use the bathroom, went off the trail to not get peeked at, and by the time she was done, her group was gone. Then she hiked to the road to hitchhike back. And that is where her track disappeared, likely she found someone to take her on the road.
Now if that person did something, or if she had a safe ride and something happened later is unclear.
A work party and she goes missing. Highly suspicious. I would think someone maybe thought they could get lucky and she declined and they didn't like that. As for her body being found the way it did, I mean as you said wild animals are around, doesn't mean they killed her but just fed on her.

She as last seen at a work party. Doesn't mean she was abducted at the party. I love how the wahmen love to jump to unfounded conclusions. She was at the party where people saw her, then went home. Then went for a hike the next day or two. Then froze to death. Duh. Anytime a wahmen does something dumm or careless the other wahmen always jump to conclusion a bad bad man that did it. Take some accountability. What happened to "strong and independent"? Y'all sound like you really think you're weak and dependent.

2nd. She wasn't found during search cause the rapist dumped her body after the search. No. If animals were to blame they would have found some of her during search
Surely there would be tooth marks on the remains, if it was an animal.
How do you know she was r*ped? All they found was skeleton remains, not sure if those can give away if that kind stuff happened?
Im not living in the USA, but if they searched that area and like they assumed an bear or cougar attacked her wouldn’t there been blood and signs of a struggle when they went to that location the first time. I don’t think animals are neat killers. And for sure she would have been screaming so someone must at least heard something. I did see many forensic documentaries where they did find human remains but that the animals fed of the body after dead and that clothes are found too, shredded or torn. I’m more of the idea that someone did kill her hid her body, after the search put her there being aware of the weather coming and animals did the scattering of the remains. I agree that the fbi knows something more. Maybe someone she trusted enough to be around, or one that was turnden down. She did left a upsetting relationship so trust issues to step in a new relationship isn’t abnormal no matter how someone might be comfortable being around doesn’t mean that a relationship was on her mind.

Animals ,big and small ,eat bodies all the time. Just because a body has signs of an animal,that doesn't mean it was killed by it. You leave a body outside,there will be marks and parts missing
I feel like searcher incompetence can account for so many of these "mysterious" disappearances, or people turning up in areas that were "already searched". It's obviously not intentional but people don't realize how easy it is to completely miss something right next to you in the wilderness, especially when you are inexperienced. It's also been proven that searchers frequently underestimate how far people, especially children, will travel when lost and scared. They have found many people and their bodies outside of the search areas that were deemed impassable or unlikely.
I don't think it's "incompetence" so much as it is the enormity of the task..... a limited number of people, having a limited amount of time and resources, have to cover as much ground as possible.... wilderness area's contain vast amounts of area that cannot be given the "fine tooth comb" treatment.... it's amazing that they find as many as they do..... over 600,000 people a year are reported missing......
@@trailrunner925 Indeed. I think people in general tend to be fairly bad at estimating the actual difficulty of all sorts of tasks. (I know I very often think I can easily do something until I'm halfway through with no clue what I'm doing, lol.)
@@littlebear274 that, and most S&R teams are volunteers that have full time jobs elsewhere to support family.... I know the state I live in, the S&R is on a volunteer basis ... handled by the Sheriffs Office, but still, it's volunteer, not a full time position that is recruited for. Be thankful than ANYONE donates time and effort.....
I worked most of my career as an archaeologist. One of the things I did a lot of was searching properties that were proposed for development for evidence of archaeological sites. And I can tell you that it is REALLY easy to miss things, especially if you have limited experience. You can go through an area and think you’ve covered it thoroughly, and come back from a slightly different direction or angle and see something that you totally missed before. It’s not easy. And with limited searchers and large areas to cover it is actually very easy for even something like a human body to be missed.
@@trailrunner925agreed. if people have such an issue with how the rescue operation is being conducted then instead of just complaining about it from the comfort of your couch get up and help next time.
I've seen a lot about the Trenny case and imo you do a great job recapping it. Some who've done videos presume she went off into the woods, but the student who saw her crouch down, look at something, and then step off the trail wasn't watching the whole time and thought Trenny had gone on to the parking lot. That group expected to see her back at the bus. As you point out, there was really nowhere to go off the trail there. She could have been looking at a plant or maybe thought about going to the "bathroom," although there are bathrooms at Clingman's Dome. Wouldn't be like her to hike off-trail and defy the teacher's instructions to come back to the bus.
Her scent was tracked to the tower at Clingman's Dome and to a road. (The tower wasn't searched early on for some reason.) Very mysterious. A student named Bowman had broken into her house and dragged her outside a year before, was shot in the foot by her mother, and in court threatened to kill Trenny when he got out of jail and he was released after only 6 months (!). The school said he was there all day but it's not unusual for high school kids to skip class and leave. Also, another student who wasn't a close friend had her star sapphire ring after Trenny disappeared and that was never properly investigated. It's very unlikely Trenny would have given her fairly expensive ring away that day.
It's very doubtful she ran away. She didn't know the destination of the field trip until she was on the bus and hadn't even known the trip wasn't cancelled, she deliberately left her purse with her DL and bank book in her mother's car, and left money at home and had $1,000 she had saved in a bank account. She also left her antibiotic (for a foot injury) at home that day. She was a responsible teen and everyone said she was happy and in good spirits on the field trip.
One woman who's made a career of the case has recently come up with unsubstantiated wonky theories that disparage Trenny and her family; totally no confidence in this woman any more. Trenny's family stopped cooperating with the woman and the teacher won't talk to her, either.
Very tragic case that will probably never be solved. RIP with the Lord, Trenny.

Crouching down, notices someone sees her, goes deeper into the green. Yeah, that sounds like she had to relieve herself. And it was extremely urgent, so she thought she didn't have the time to go all the way back.
But that is only for the time people report seeing her. What exactly happend after that is unclear.
She did walk to the road, that is what multiple search dogs confirmed. Was she in company that forced her? Was she alone trying to hitch a ride? Did whoever pick her up do something? Did she have a safe ride and things went wrong later?
If the FBI determined Sheila’s death was a homicide, despite bones strewn around, I would think they had reason.
I think one of Sheila's coworkers abducted her and hid her somewhere no one was looking (like his own cabin or some secret place no one knew about). Hung onto her for awhile and then dumped her body close by where it was scattered by animals. That or someone completely looked over the body.
We lack a motive however, it’s common for guys to overreact to rejection so that’s a possibility. Or it’s could be yet another lunatic who happened to be nearby for whatever reason, she was at the wrong place at the wrong time basically. It’s difficult without clues for sure

It would be easy to overlook a body as a hunter i couldn't tell you the times i have looked dead at a whitetail deer bedded and not notice just to have it jump and run after i pass by i feel like missing a body while searching would be about the same

Leave a note, don’t leave a note, if you go missing there will be a search. A lot of people contemplating suicide leave notes like this because part of them still hopes that someone will stop them. I’ve never actually contemplated suicide, but I’ve been depressed enough that I can understand the impulse.

Bear Grylls Fever was into a guy I met at Mountain Crossings on the AT in 2010. He didn't have any gear, it was dusk and he was headed SOBO. I asked him where he was going with no gear. He said his buddies were behind him and they had all the gear. I told him he didn't look prepared and would probably get lost and die and he needed to turn around and think that through. He did.
I feel like on the last case, the girl Trini would have looked at something on her right after someone placing something on the ground and it was a person who had a weapon making her quietly exit off trail and boom gone in seconds. Plus the year this took place the land would’ve been different. I can’t imagine any other plausible way? Kyle your videos and the way you tell them are the best of the best. Thank you so much for all your hard work. I hope it’s paying off for you.

Of course wahmen never make dumm decisions like seeing a cute animal and then going into the bushes to follow it. Wahmen could only have been abducted by a bad bad man. Even thought the group of classmates saw her squatting and looking off trail. Yet there was an evil man just waiting for a unsuspecing innocent wahmen to come into the bushes on a heavily trafficked trail where 20 people would hear if she screamed.. And the bad bad stranger man knew he could convince a wahmen not to scream as he abducted her. SMH at the hysterical thinking, never accountability as a wahmen.

I'm definitely interested in an in-depth video on Trenny Gibson. I'm pretty familiar with her story, but I'd like to hear your take. I know some people thought she'd arranged to be picked up and ran away, but iirc, the two was too last-minute for that (in a world without cell phones). I wonder if perhaps she got dehydrated, as that might explain the odd behavior. But anyway, yeah - please do a full video on this case!

A possibility of what happened to Derrick could be that he got all that gear because he was planning on using it, but didn’t want to haul it all along with him initially. He first wanted to find a suitable campsite far away from people, then once found, planned to come back to his vehicle to retrieve the rest of his stuff.
Multiple possibilities for what happened next and far from help; disabling fall, ran into other people off trail with bad intent, went into a cave which housed a predator, any number of things could have happened to him before he was able to return to pick up the rest of his gear.
I feel sorry for his family; I can’t imagine a more tragic thing than to live with the anxiety of not knowing where your child is or what happened to him.
Interesting thought but more likely he didn't realize how much eveything would weigh. Seriously it sounded like he had 50+ pounds of equipment and as he was gathering everything up to leave his car, he realized he can't carry all that and just left the tent and sleeping bag.
@@markgunther2502 possibly even both. He underestimated the weight, so he took only some of it and planned to come back later. What he did take seems reasonable for a day. Some food to snack on, gear to work things. String to either mark a place or prepare a tarp. A compass and parts of a survival handbook to guide him.
In Derek's case, taking gear in even if he was going to end his life makes sense if he wanted to be out there a while before he went through with things or in case he changed his mind. It mightve made his last hours/days more comfortable and brought him some peace.
Good point. People don't want their end to be uncomfortable. People change their mind. He had the stuff to be prepared for either.
I've been to Paradise in October (I lived in Seattle), and it starts to snow heavily and frequently there in October. That may be why Sheila Kerns remains weren't discovered sooner. She was buried in the snow early in the season, and the snow just got deeper. I have also been to the mountains here in Washington in May, and it is still snowing in May up there, just starting to thaw. It is also very close to hibernation time for bears, which starts in November, and bears are particularly dangerous around that time. During "hyperphagia", bears hunt day and night to prepare for hibernation. The campground near where she was found may have already been closed for the winter. The woods are very thick in the area, and you might not see a bear or a cougar hiding three feet away from you.
Agreed. And it's the time of year when deer are moving lower in elevation, so food for cougars becomes more scarce. A younger cougar, or an older infirm one, could easily have snagged her and dragged her to where her remains were found, lost under the snow for the duration of the winter.
@@waterfall_brook It's funny, but I really hope it was a bear or cougar, because the idea that it was one of her co-workers, or a two-legged predator is even more horrifying.
I don't know how much snow was on the ground at that time, but she could have stepped into a hole hidden by the snow and simply disappeared. Wind driven show hides a lot, it doesn't have to be a tree well, could just be a dip in the ground. Then later scavengers scattered her remains.

Derek may have had Bipolar - bought all the camping gear with grandeur thoughts of surviving in the wilderness while manic and then the depression hit him when he got to the trail and his end game changed.

Derrick could have joined a cult. If no one saw him then how do we know that he actually went into the woods? Could have just made it seem as if he was there and left with someone else to change his future
I agree, maybe a cult or not but it's possible he went into the woods with the appearance of disappearing only to start a new life somewhere else. He obviously did not want to be found, but looking in the woods is time-consuming and this would delay a search for him out into other cities because of how large that forest is. I wonder if he owed someone money or had mental health symptoms of delusions. That would add to the reasons of why he disappeared this way.

I was a girl in the 70’s and I definitely didn’t carry a comb in my “back pocket”, it would have been in my bag along with everything else. If I wasn’t carrying a bag, I wouldn’t have a comb.
But it was reported that several students saw her well after leaving Robert to walk back on her own.

Graduated in 1973. We carried wide tooth combs in the back pockets of our bell bottoms.

I've been on the same field trip to Clingman's Dome more than once in the 70s and 80s, I just can't understand how Trenny could have disappeared without something bad happening like a crime of opportunity. If I remember correctly the path from the parking lot to the dome is paved and generally safe. I'll definitely watch a whole video about her.
I'd have to see a map of the area, but the newspaper article mentioned that near the area she crouched in, there were steep drop offs nearby.

Story #1 Live off the land and become whole fantasy...and died in the process somewhere way off trail. Story #2 most likely taken away (probably willingly), raped, then done in by one of her coworkers/party attendee and hidden well enough not to be found until later by animals resulting in the scattered bones. This won't be solved unless someone confesses. Story #3 Weird story, but most likey a slip & fall with head injury given the weather. No answers unless her bones are eventually found. The Smokies are a temperate rainforest. Some spots get 80 to 100 inches of rain. The underbrush is intense if you get off trail.
Please cover Trenny Gibson's disappearance in it's own video. I was a teenager at the time of her disappearance, and spent my career working with youth. They sat together, ate together, hiked together, and appeared to be best friends. They wouldn't have split up on the hike. Something happened that led to them splitting up, and resulted in her going missing. So many heartbreaking stories. My heart goes out to each of them, and all who loved them.
You're right the kid that was known to have been UP trail, with a group of students that saw her disappear between she and he, did it.
Mt Rainier National Park is very beautiful. Iconic mysterious mountain! I've climbed Mt Rainier twice! Many people dissappear there!

@@ivanpetrov5185 Yup. People find it mysterious mostly because of the photos. My firm belief is that the ones taken at night were an attempt to scare off animals with the flash. It wouldn't have been at all useful to see with - the sudden light takes a few seconds to adjust to and by then there's no light anymore - but a young woman lost in the wilderness in a foreign country would be hearing all sorts of noises she wasn't familiar with and was probably terrified that each one was the sound of something coming to attack her. Likely most of the time there was nothing there, or at least nothing remotely dangerous, but she couldn't know for sure. Extremely sad story, not mysterious at all.
@@littlebear274 I wholeheartedly agree! I would add more. The girls were from the Netherlands. This is the only country in the world which is at altitude below sea level. They don't have any mountains AT ALL! The Dutch people are clueless about hiking as they don't have any mountains. Ergo, the girls went with very light gear (no warm clothes whatsoever) which is explainable based on the fact that they were in a tropical country in the middle of the summer with very high temperatures. On top of that due to the fact that their trail was super easy (fact) it was expected that they would finish it and go back within 3-4 hours. Therefore, they didn't bring enough food and water for long hiking. Their trail was really super easy. That might explain that after they reached the end point (with no expirience in hiking) they decided to continue instead of going back. The problem is that the next part of the road was entirely different animal that was with lots of greenery, bushes, jungle and was used only by the native people and very randomly on top of that. To add the last nail in their coffin the next day the rainy season started which made the temperatures significantly lower compared to a warm sunny day. They were naive due to their lack of expirience.

Thank you, Kyle for taking the time to make and share these videos. I believe the more that these cases are shared and brought to light the better the chances of them possibly getting solved. Sometimes it just takes the right time, person or persons to think of something they may have thought was insignificant at the time to realize what they saw or heard or whatever to set a case wide open.

2nd case Shiela, the special agent mentioned that just because a person was cleared years ago, doesn't mean that new information won't make them a subject or suspect again which makes me think that they may have felt strong about a person but had no evidence to back it up. Also, her body being in pieces and spread out could just mean that animals ate on her decomposing body which is normal especially around the winter. And tbh Mt lions love to bring their food up in trees and one could definitely carry a female body up a tree. Maybe that's why they didn't find her on the search. Or maybe she was abducted and some sick fuck had her locked up somewhere torturing her and when he finally killed her, he dumped her body off there? You never know bc people have done some sick, twisted, and sadistic shit. Rip Shiela, I hope your family gets the answers they deserve. Poor lady, being done like that by her husband! He should feel shame every single day!!! And we don't know if he didn't kill her bc maybe she wanted him to pay her back for all that schooling!? I hope answers are obtained. And I'm not accusing her ex husband, I'm just saying anything could have happened.
I thought the same thing about that FBI agent's statement. They were suspicious of someone (or more than one) but didn't have the evidence. Apparently, the autopsy details were never released, which means it's still an open investigation, and they don't think it was an animal attack. That statement was intended for the killer's ears, to mess with their head.
after hearing these same stories many times from paranormal channels its nice to hear it from one of the realistic ones. I personally don't believe in all that bullocks but I love the takes, its cathartic, it helps us mask the real monsters...some of our fellow human beings.

I spent time in the Smokies many summers ago working around Cherokee...we would go to the Dome, etc. Hard to imagine there being no trace of her, but the density of the woods can seem daunting.

That's awful young to be an experienced killer. It sounds like they were bf/gf--riding in the back of the bus together. That would explain the comb.
@@cariwaldick4898 Yeah I can easily imagine her dropping it and him picking it up, or offering to carry it for her if she didn't have suitable pockets etc. Girls' clothing often has no or only very small pockets and I don't think Kyle mentioned whether she had a bag with her. It doesn't sound strange at all to me for the friend she was with for most of the day to have an item of hers.

Seems like Sheila's body might have been dumped after the search was called off, and then wildlife had a go at her remains, causing the bones to be scattered.
Whoever killed her likely waited for the search to be called off to dump the body, which makes it a bit more likely that it's someone from the area, and possibly someone she knew. Not necessarily, but more likely, since they had the opportunity to watch the search and dump the body in the same area later.
Sometimes a killer helps in a search to see what is going on too

Case 3. I think her mate came on to her and she probably rebuffed him which made him attack her. He probably buried her body out there somewhere. He had her hair comb as a trophy.

Sheila's remains were found down at Longmire, which is 11 miles from Paradise Inn where she worked. Her remains were close to the park workers lodging area at Longmire. Kyle, you said she was found 1 mile from where she worked. You should correct that to say 11 miles.
I don’t think the error is in the 1-mile distance stated, but rather the wrong inn was mentioned. The Longmire campground is roughly one mile from the National Park Inn, but, yes, 11 miles from Paradise. NPI is the only one that has year round operations and is the hotel that should have referenced.
I live in Washington and I agree with @Az.TrailTrecker. It sounds to me like someone she knew from the lodge is responsible, dumped her body after the search and animals spread her bones. That area is far to popular for her to be in plain site for that length of time. Why isn't there more information from DNA? They found bones? They know a lot more than they let on. My heart goes out to all of these missing persons' families. I can't begin to imagine how difficult this has to be for them. Thank you for spreading the word for these families!

My daughter is around the age of Trenny, and I have to say if her school organised such a sloppy, badly supervised trip out hiking, I would not let her go. At the VERY least they should have had designated partners who were under no circumstances to seperate. So sad, I cannot even begin to contemplate the agony her parents must have felt. 💔

Shela Kerns was for sure killed by someone. I would look at who she was sleeping with. A party to say goodbyes, alcohol involved, and she is found walking distance from the area. Absolutely she was sleeping with someone or multiple someones and it got ugly.

Usually not for fun. It does not tarnish her reputation to say she was sexually active and someone got pissed or jealous and killed her. From Paradise to Longmire is a long, steep, windy road with lots of steep terrain. Someone who worked up there had to have done something to her and then dumped her body. So sad they haven't found the killer.

Ten years ago today Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon decided to venture over the Mirador, big mistake, huge.
I just watched Kendall's doc on these girls. It's a really weird case. The camera, their cell phones..etc.. It's so odd and seems like foul play. Those poor girls.
@@KKJournals I disagree. Doesn’t seem like foul play at all, but tragic accident of people underestimating the hike and getting lost. I think a lot of misreporting and myth gets mixed in with their story too, after ten years of people making videos and writing articles on it.
A theory I have based on Derrick is that he bought all of that survival stuff just so he could cover up him ending himself just for everyone’s sake. We see this a lot in people like him. He bought the sleeping bag and tent but didn’t use it because he ultimately knew he wouldn’t need it.

As someone who grew up in TN walking in the Smokies, I can tell you right now it is EXTREMELY easy to lose someone/get lost there. I was at a well known camp once when bad weather rolled in as night fell. My entire class was at the camp on an overnight field trip, and despite the weather we went to one of the main cabins to watch a movie. On the way back to my cabin (heavy rain, mud, thunder/lightning, pitch black night), my sandal broke and despite my calling out to my classmates to not leave me behind, I was left desperately struggling to catch up.
By the time I made it back to my cabin soaked but alright (I took my shoes off and walked through the mud, thankfully I’ve got a great sense of direction so I didn’t get lost) it was very quickly apparent to me that no one had noticed I’d disappeared.
On a different hike when I was older I was off trail with a friend and we went to cross a couple of logs. My friend crossed no problem, and when I went to cross the log had had enough and I fell. I thankfully was able to grab onto a different tree and stop myself from falling altogether, but I was lucky I didn’t break my leg.
I say all this to say that even in a group you can get lost, and the Smokies are A LOT more dangerous than people give it credit for!!
Maybe she was alive and not killed until after the search ended.... maybe , having lost her way, she just stumbled into the area after the search ended.....
