Multiple callbacks to Project Pegasus. If you remember the beginning of the Avengers movie, they were in an underground facility called Pegasus. A lot of the hate that this movie gets comes from a couple things 1. The Skrulls have always been villains and here they portrayed them as good people, so that's a 180 degree turn that no one that already knew about the skrulls wanted. I feel this was the main reason for the hate. 2.If you think about it there was really no threat throughout the movie, none of the villains could stand up to Carol once she fully unlocked her Powers. When you compare her with other insanely strong characters like Hulk, Thor and even Superman, they always have to confront a villain that matches their power and when the villain is not as powerful as the hero, the villain surpasses the hero in intellect.

It is a girls rising up kind of movie, but it’s also a general human rising against suppression movie. She had been held back in a very similar fashion to Thor in Ragnarok.
Every oppressor makes some excuse for claiming others to be inferior and invalid, and some excuses are just outright lies. You can see parallels to misogyny, for sure, it’s just that it’s also an important message for everyone, that people actively try to strip out and keep you from seeing, by claiming that it’s not for you, it’s for a minority of aggressive feminists that should for some reason be villainized.
People complained about Black Panther’s success, because they believed it to be a black movie for black people, to make others feel guilty. Except, these days, too many people have said, “Yeah, cool, that’s fine. Let the brothas preach, they deserve it.”
It’s just hard to reach people about female rights, because they keep deciding half the population is surely impossible to suppress, so it must be made up, or they hear crap about physical strength and read biased statistics, and say “oh yeah that science applies to literally any human skill, so it must be okay to treat them like garbage in general.” They’re making similar bs arguments for gays, they’re making things up about trans people, they’re even jumping to conclusions about disabled people, especially for mental disabilities. So many people are stronger than they’re given credit for, and sometimes the discredit is enough to ruins lives.
Carol had to get back up and fight - not just for herself, but because the Krull couldn’t.

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Got her powers from the Teseract/Space infinity stone. The blue cube from the Avenger's, Thor and Captain America 1 movies. The Mind stone was in Loki's staff. The Power stone was the purple one in Guardians of the galaxy 1. The Teseract can transfer it's power to various objects and can be used, as most of the infinity stones can to power things. Loki's staff in Avengers was the Mind stone with a casing of The space stone energy around it powering it. The engine in the Jet that Carol shot was a transfer and stealing of power from the Space stone. So was Loki's staff and the weapons that the Jatowri used which was Thanos troops in the first Avengers movie and the Hydra weapons used in the first Captain America. The power transferred to Carol when she shot it. Which is why she's soo powerful. She's literally a portion of power from the Space infinity stone. Her powers are about on par with DC's Superman. And is Marvel's version of Superman basically. She was too busy with the Skrulls and fighting the Kree empire and dealing with galaxy wide issues to be worried much about about a small planet like C53/Earth to be around for everything before Endgame. The universe wasn't actually caring about anything here until Loki attacked during the battle of New York and Then Thanos coming for the Mind and Time stones during infinity war. Everything else in every single other Marvel movie was a "local problem" and Earth's issue and not the Galaxy's. So no one but Earth cared. Carol probably hadn't even heard anything about Earth from anyone anywhere. The universe is a big place and Earth is not exactly a developed or space faring race in the Marvel universe. We're on an outer spiral arm away from most of the galaxies activity, not space faring and have nothing anyone wants. Like a wood shack in the middle of the woods miles away from any major city. So she didn't even know anything was wrong until Fury used the pager in Infinity War. She might not have even been in this Galaxy at all.
And yes I don't get the hate. Personally I liked it. Yes it wasn't Infinity War or Iron Man but it never was going to be. I think the non stop action of that colored people's opinion of it. Was there a lot of drab settings like deserts and forest and plain government facilities half the time? Yes but the other half wasn't. Was it the best Marvel movies ever? No. But it wasn't Bad. Meh maybe but that's not the same as bad. I honestly don't think Brie did a bad job. Was it an amazing emotional packed performance? No. But if you were paying attention she wasn't supposed to be that emotional. She spent 6 years with a device jacked into her brain trying to control her and was being trained every day for years to control her emotions. I doubt it was bad acting she's done great in everything I've seen her act in. I think a lot of the hate comes from the drab settings half the time and it not being as epic as the other movies and especially because of how Fury lost his eye. People were sooooooo pissed at that. Ok it was a Flerken and supposed to be ironic and funny considering how much of a bad ass fury is. And that's what we got. Wasn't that funny and it could've been a far better back story. But it didn't "Destroy the MCU and Fury" like some people said 🙄. At best it was just meh, ok 🤷🏼‍♂️. Was it a great movie? No. Did it "Destroy the MCU and my entire life" like these whiny little snow flake soy boys said? Nope. It was just meh 🤷🏼‍♂️. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. But I still liked it. And people whined also because it was "forced" girl power and pandering supposedly was a complaint 🙄. Especially the No Doubt "I'm just a girl" song. Omg these morons lost their minds 😂🙄. The main protagonist and hero IS A WOMAN! Duh! The Movie is about a strong hero woman! Hello????! Think Mcfly, think. At least they didn't sexually objectify her. Let's count the men with shirts off
    1. Thor did that on top of shoving macho male stereotypes down your throat on top of it. And no one said JS.
    2. So did Captain America. Again no one said JS.
    3. So did Guardians of the galaxy with Star Lord/Peter Quill. Again no one complained.
Then the Women. So did Iron Man with Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and then Pepper in Iron Man 3, again JS! The worst they did in this movie was put her in a Nine Inch Nails Tshirt with no bra 😱. And use a No Doubt song and just be semi bland. Big fu#$&@# deal. Brie was directed that way and it was the character.

    Another entertaining reaction, guys.
About the where’s she been all this while:
The Disney Marvel Cinematic Multiverse Captain Marvel’s very nom de guerre is derived and inspired by:
1 Kree special forces operative V-Ers rediscovering and resuming her identity of virtuous and ambitious American military pilot CAPTAIN Carol “Avenger” Danvers.
2 Her Space Aspect endowed powers making her the very embodiment of what her mother figure Kree rebel MAR-VELL strove to create with Tesseract Space stone technology to end the Kree Empire’s tyranny.
1 In the concluding scene with Yon-Rogg, Carol took up martyred Mar-Vell’s mantle and vowed to end the vast and powerful Kree Empire’s tyranny.
2 Carol vowed to help the Skrull refugees everywhere to find a new planet.
Suffice it to say, Fury was starkly aware that Carol has had A LLLLLOT on her plate to accomplish from the Nineties, Oughties, Tens and Twenties, so he never emergency paged her until Earth’s jeopardy was desperately dire and her immediate return was requisite.

It's not a perfect movie, but it's a lot better than it gets credit for. A lot of the loudest criticisms get wrapped up in external factors that are outside of this movie's control. It looks like the sequel to this (THE MARVELS) which comes out in November should be 🔥🔥🔥 though.

Yes Carol absorbing the Tesseract energy from the lightspeed engine explosion was crazy... and it's exactly the kind of random accidernt that Marvel used for lots of their superhero origins, ever since the 1960s. Ordinary people getting exposed to exotic radiation or chemicals and being transformed into superhumans instead of dying. Not because there was anything special about them to begin with, they just got lucky. That was the story behind Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, Daredevil, the Hulk... and in the MCU, Carol follows that same trend. So did Wanda and her brother Pietro, they both manifested powers after HYDRA experinments exposed them to energy from the mind stone... although there's more to her story, as you'll discover ;)

    • @renzero9206
      @renzero9206 Рік тому +9

True to an extent, but Carol didn't get her powers from an Infinity Stone in the comics. There was an explosion, and her DNA was spliced with the Kree hero Mar-Vell who was using the alias Dr. Walter Lawson on Earth.

    • @Blag_Cog
      @Blag_Cog Рік тому

I feel like there are some very important differences that you are neglecting. Spider-Man's origins has been theorized as being a stark experiment gone wrong hence why Tony paid so much attention to it. The Fantastic 4 haven't shown up yet in the MCU. Daredevil's past in the MCU is dubious but he was blinded with special chemicals that were transported in containers, ie the substance that changed him was intact. The Hulk had a special gene that allowed him to become the hulk.
The exploding engine is bland storytelling because the actual object that imbued her with powers exploded before she had any powers. I don't know about you but the way an explosion works is by releasing raw energy that tears everything apart, and while it tore the engine apart, exploded the dirt and aircraft materials apart, for some reason she was not torn apart. It shows what the explosion does to physical objects but not her. All that happened to her was a few scrapes and the power of an infinity stone.
Mind you this is only a standard we have because its an MCU movie.

I liked this a lot, but I'm familiar with Carol Danvers, so I was just happy to see her get a good treatment here. You mentioned she looked like Wonder Woman, and in many ways she is Marvel's version of her. Nice introduction of the Skrulls, whose war with the Kree also has a long history in the comics. A lot of people were unhappy with the fragmented memory approach to the story, and maybe that was an issue for people who weren't familiar with her learning about her. Plus, her dry demeanor in the beginning was due to the Kree reconditioning, as her flashbacks and photos showed she was a party animal and daredevil.
Really looking forward to future features with her, as her comics arc is long and winding. And her theme music is awesome. :)

Although this is a known problem, the way movie is presented as is allows for there to be a scene of action every few minutes.

I'm glad that you two enjoyed the film. anyone saying, "I hated the movie because it was bad" is an opinion, which I respect, because everyone is entitled to an opinion. it is not evidence. anyone who wants to proclaim that this was a bad film, in the comments here, or in conversations elsewhere, has forgotten that opinions are not facts. I don't get to tell you what color is worst, what painting is best, what movie is worst, or what song is best. those are all opinions, not facts, because art is not objective. what I think is trash, you may think is treasure, and we are BOTH CORRECT, because art is subjective! "I didn't like the movie", or "I hated the movie" is valid, and I respect it; an opinion was given, and many of us prioritize or ignore new media based on the opinions of people we trust. "this is a bad film" or "this is the worst Marvel film" or "this is a great film" are also only opinions, and if the person offering them has no connection to us, then their opinion should have no validity. we live in an age where social influencers are not a made up job description. the first examples were food critics--their astonishing job qualifications; they have eaten food every day of their lives, which describes every human on the planet who is capable of reading their opinions. as much as anyone might want to believe that their OPINION should (or does), mean more than yours (or mine, or your partner's), *only monumental arrogance would expect it to* mean more.
I loved your reaction. PLEASE continue keeping it real! it is interesting, is it not, that some of your biggest problems with the film, like "where has she been all this time?", are addressed immediately in the next film. I also LOVE how you absolutely HATED that Fury's eye was destroyed by a scratch. the film even addressed it! Colson asks about the rumors. we have wondered for years! yet isn't something petty, something pathetic, often the reality of a romanticized historical event? I hate that it was stupid, too. I watched the MCU movies in timeline order earlier this year (not in release order). So, Captain Marvel was the second movie I watched after Captain America, the First Avenger. When watching it in timeline order, the movie is pretty good. First, there is only 1 movie and a couple of shorts to compare it to. As a second movie, it doesn’t feel shoehorned in to explain her presence in Endgame. You know from early on how the Avengers Initiative got its name. You understand how Fury has the Tesseract. It makes Coulson an even more important character; seeing him in this movie first makes his death in Avengers that more heartbreaking. And you also know why Fury has the eye patch. So when Fury says that the last time he trusted someone, he lost an eye in The Winter Soldier, I died laughing. It added so much to that line and his serious delivery when you already know the backstory. And the end credits didn’t spoil anything for me. Rather, I was on the edge of my seat watching every movie wondering what was going to happen to Fury and when. So, the order you watch it in can make a difference in the level of enjoyment.

She is also stupidly overpowered which makes it difficult to relate to her character. They need to bring out more characters like Ripley from Alien or Sarah Connor from Terminator. They were awesome but they were flawed and that is the problem with Mary Sues. People cannot relate to them because they carry this image of supposed perfection and it makes them really unlikable.

The film was literally about discovering her power.

This movie is ok but could have used better writing. Carol Danvers personality type requires that the movie be written in a way to make you like that character. It's not an inherently like-able personality. Other movies did this well... Top Gun with Maverick, Iron Man with Tony Stark, etc. Brie Larson acted as well as she could with the writing given to her. But the story is told backwards (cause she lost her memory) so we don't get those normal scenes early in the movie that makes you like the character. in screenwriting, these are called "Save the Cat" scenes. We also get scenes where Yon-Rogg / Jude Law is telling her seemingly reasonable things to train her but is actually gaslighting her so that the Kree can control her. The writing has the audience confused and all over the place.

This is more about building the post Endgame story than the Thanos saga.

Not sure if anyone posted this already, but... If you recall, in _Guardians Volume 1,_ Ronan expressed anger that the Kree had entered a treaty with Xandar, which was his justification for deserting the Kree and teaming up with Thanos. While the subject is never brought up in the movies (thus far, and I haven't seen _The Marvels_ yet), it's generally _assumed_ that this treaty was the result of Danvers taking the side of those standing against the Kree.
Likewise, Korath (played by Djimon Hounsou) is also the same character he plays in _Guardians Volume 1;_ Another assumption is that his cybernetic implants in _Guardians_ are the results of injuries sustained in this film.
Third, Minn-Erva (green-skinned woman with an attitude) is played by Gemma Chan, who plays another character (Sersi) in _Eternals._
Personally, I liked this movie. There was a bit of "girl power" in the marketing, but what I see in the movie (and what you two both seemed to catch) is that her determination and drive came from being human; The only feminist message I saw came from the negative messaging she received (from her father being angry about her go kart crash to the "cock pit" joke during flight school) being something the Supreme Intelligence was able to use as a psychological lever, which Danvers finally got over during her 'stand back up' moment. "Women are human, too" just about sums that up.
