Personally I really like Tate McRae, I have her entire think later album saved and almost all of her used to think I could fly songs. She has an actual dance background unlike most pop stars. She’s an amazing performer and she can really sing, liking her mostly just depending on your music taste.
Yeah I like almost every song on both her albums. I actually like that her songs are pretty much designed to dance too…you could argue that her dance background influences her music that way. Which I appreciate. Sometimes you just want a catchy song you can dance to and not think about the lyrics. You don’t need a crazy concept behind it. Sometimes I just wanna feel like I’m a 20 year old with a bad attitude for 3 minutes again 😂
I like Tate, but she feels more like a dancer/performer than a musician. Olivia and Billie are so ahead of their peers in the sense that they have their own distinct sounds and branding. Someone like Tate can easily blend in with all the other pop girls. I’m not a big fan of her ex boyfriend’s hockey gear being such a big focus point of her album cover, but the biggest thing is her voice. It needs some help for real.
I'm not a design person exactly, but the criticism that "black clothes don't read against a black background" sounds very strange to me (2:01). The point is to have her body be the focus, and having colored clothes would probably ruin the contrast \ impact they were going for. Any other color besides black here would look out of place. Besides that, It's a simple palette that I see pretty often.
I would say it's not so much the black clothing on its own but the way its utilized here. Black on black creates form out of negative space, so your eye has to be able to easily track where the rest of her body "should" be for it to not look awkward. since the black top covers most of her torso and she's bending at a bit of an angle, it makes a sort of awkward, unappealing shape. Plus, half her legs are covered by (off-center) white leg pads, which draw your eye to the bottom of the image, rather than anywhere you'd usually be looking if sex appeal was what your were going for, + cuts off her form at a weird spot. I think this album cover could be fixed if she either ditched the pads entirely and used a different top (it would be simple but at least not ugly), OR she had some gear on her upper half to balance out the design. Thats just my thoughts as a hobbyist artist tho!
bullcrap music is subjective whatever fantano thinks isn't the end all be all no one should let his reviews dictate your music taste I disagree with his reviews half the time
I'm giving you the upvote, but I have never disagreed harder with you. It may not be AOTY, but it's solid pop, enough to at least rate. The themes of existential numbness, boredom, detachment land decently well. The light trap beats work in her favor, and lend to some very solid remixes (like the REALM mix of Greedy.) Honestly, I'm growing tired of concept albums - they frequently don't land and cannot sustain over an LP length release. Tate's playing to her strengths on this album, and while her writing isn't at the level of top artists in pop today, it's coming along.
I actually love this album. Like it isn't groundbreaking by any means and I totally get the criticism, but I enjoy it a lot. Also I've been listening to it pretty consistently since it dropped and I didn't notice the title on the pads until this lmao. So unreadable if you don't look at it hi-res
i feel the same way about it… never even thought i would ever genuinely like a tate mcrae album but for some reason i like it a lot and find the songs enjoyable and i find myself just listening to it almost everyday but im afraid if i were to tell someone i like it or suggest it to it would come off as distasteful but i can definitely see why people would hate it
I’m a sucker for pop music and I fully love this album. Greedy and exes are smash singles. She’s a phenomenal performer. Think later, guilty conscience, and hurt my feelings are also BOPS. I’m personally very excited for Tate
me too I love think later so much but I do have to be honest that the synthetic-like vocals and slightly lazy songwriting is a bit of an issue, think later is still amazing ❤
@@tidalnotesI understand what you are saying. The album was unfortunately rushed by her label. She had to turn it in months before she was planning to. This was due to her label wanting to capitalize off of the success of greedy when it happened. I think her 3rd album will be where she really SHINES, hopefully. She is also planning to release deluxe tracks from this album pretty soon, so hopefully those will be good indicators of what’s to come.
@@kaheivibro I’M fuming, Tate McRae does not deserve success like this. Fantano’s seen far more shitty music in his life than most of us, he’s gonna get fed up eventually. Popular music has been garbage for like ten years now, it’s the same shit, same formula, same chord progressions, same subjects…at some point, you gotta question the intelligence of the people who make this trash.
I was kinda excited to listen to this album after "Greedy" dropped since I liked the mid-00s Timbaland-inspired production and Tate's amazing dancing skills whenever she performs it live. But yeah, aside from a few tracks, this album was mostly a major disappointment. I feel like people overhyped her to the point of calling her the next Britney Spears simply bc she's a good dancer, but I'm not really buying the hype :/
Me too, although I see the potential, this album kinda has the same problems as Jack Harlows first record, where he faced similar criticisms about the songwriting and production. And that’s what I think about with Tate’s record. The main thing for me is that I think Tate needs to change it up just a bit in a way that is somewhat clever
To be fair, go listen to Britney’s first 2 albums. They also are singles driven and aren’t that great album wise. Both wouldn’t have gotten a good review from him either, and that’s where we are with Tate’s career and age. Britney wasn’t really liked by people outside of her demo, especially older men with music backgrounds.
@@Shane-jg6pr Yeah, but I mean Britney has pop classics like In the Zone and Blackout. Sure, Tate is only at the start of her career, but only time will tell.
It's a pretty mediocre album, but it's got some good songs. Like, I agree it's frankly pretty disappointing, but Cut My Hair, Greedy and Think Later are pretty good. Based on the singles I was hoping for something a little better and more ambitious, but it is basically just derivative of better artists.
Considering that she's only 20 and more of a dancer than a singer, the music and the overly-processed vocals is about what we should expect, I think. Still not good, but the thing going for her is that she's genuinely gorgeous and that Greedy is really damned catchy. Let's be real here, too: looks go a LONG way for any young female pop star.
shes incredibly regular looking though and has the regular makeup look of the day. therefore next year when that look has moved on she will be left behind

As a millennial that was becoming a teenager when Christina Aguillera’s Dirty became a big hit and to gradually see Christina become super sexualised and now see Dirty being used as an inspiration for more uninspired sexualization in Tate’s videos, photo shoots and that horrible cover for the album… it’s clear to me that her label is trying to cash in big time on the same old sexualising our very young artist until we have squeezed it dry. For example the exes video is solely shot as “see how hot her behind is” while the song is how she is young and not yet decide how her she wants to tackle her romantic life. Can’t even talk enough about how toxic the greedy song is. Being the object of interest for way older man (she is half his age in her song) and acting like that’s exciting and validating, preaching the message to other teenage girls while the song is inspired by Timbaland’s beat from Promiscuous. 🙄 No wonder the album is bad, it’s meant to spark tik tok dance virality and appeal also to her core audience (teenage girls and young women) but also to the male gaze (aka creepy predatory men) because it brings the big bucks for the label. Let us not forget she is 20 years old and she is already being pushed into the same mould of soon to be become stale pop star unless she is shows constantly how beautiful and sexy she is while singing about boys and men. Needless to say I’m tired of this, Tate has potential for better music and visuals away from the same sexy pop star stereotype.
HEY, creepy predator here. Greedy is about a woman who is young and not established and a man twice her age who is very established and secure in his life, yet even though she can crush his soul and he is powerless to her. It's the tragic truth of reality. it's actually a very deep song about the human condition when you explore the lyrics and what they really mean. Let her be young and sext while she is young and sexy, don't spoil the party with piety.
in her mind, she did something impressive that hasn't been accomplished by any artist that came before her lol she even called herself a very visual writer at one point... sure, sure!
I'm just glad that she's on her way to overtaking Ted Cruz as the most famous person to have been born in Calgary. This city could use a W, even a tiny one.
@noiceboi408tate didn’t just pop out of nowhere with a smash hit on her hands, she’s been building an audience and doing massive numbers for years with independent youtube uploads. and she’s seen steady commercial success with her output under a label. she’ll be fine.
Well, I won't argue on the more technical side that you have criticised since I don't know much about it myself aside that it's true I'd prefer her vocals to sound more raw, and in fact I love so much more the live version of grave than the recorded one. But I can't see or agree with you what you said about her story telling her songs, u only analysed exes and said it was indicative of the whole album but that's just not true and it felt a little manipulative of the message since that's supposed to be her least meaningful song and simply a dance bop (as seen in the video), while songs like greedy, cut my hair, think later, hurt my feelings actually clearly tell a story about how an older guy, presumably almost twice her age, is showing her a darker side of life (clubbing and stuff when she says he bribes the bouncer) or how they're staying at hotels and he pays for stuff etc., it sounds like this older, richer and more powerful guy kinda taking advantage of her and she just doesn't stop to think about the consequences, but then in some other songs she realises it made her lose some of her youth because of it and how she doesn't know if she wants him or wants him gone. Then calgary talks about nostalgia and melancholy and how she felt when she grew up in her hometown and how it feels now when she goes back, a contrast to plastic palm trees where she basically talks about Los Angeles. Anyway, if you don't see coherence and actual story-telling then, sorry, you're just not looking deep enough. As for the rest, some ppl like me just enjoy catchy songs that touch on themes they can relate at a certain point in their lives or that gets them in a mood and I think that's what this album is for. Edit: and also you haven't credited one of the most important thing that accompanies her music and it's basically one of her biggest selling points and trademarks which is her dancing, both commercial and interpretative, which usually upgrade her music quite a lot.
I'm with you, her live versions are a totally different monster. Grave live on SNL actually made me tear up. i think he watched the exes video, couldn't get her perfect ass out of his mind and got stuck on the exes lyrics. Obviously Plastic Palm Trees, Calgary, We're Not Alike and ever Greedy have great lyrics. Greedy when you peel the layers of the onion, it starts taking you down a very dark hole about the truth of the human condition, it's actually quite deep when you analyze them lyrics, on it's surface it is a cute little pop song.

So interesting to me. I literally love metalcore and hard rock and edm and this album to me is fantastic. Run For The Hills is an incredible song that is real and true to emotions and human feeling. I feel the exact opposite of most of these negative takes. I understand being critical of music and I assure you my music I love is worthy of some critique, but I find Tate a refreshing new artist compared to the blast of modern hip hop and pop. The hockey take thing is embarrassing if you ask me. For quite some time now it’s been pointed out if you pay attention to her live performances or music videos she’s often wearing stuff that references sports or has shredded sport-like items. A bit of a lack of research on your part.
I’m honestly with Fantano here. I just found this album really bland and just sounds like pop music made for the radio. The only songs I enjoyed here were greedy and exes, but otherwise there’s better female pop music you can listen to.
honestly, actually listening to tate mcrae's music especially this album, honestly is really good, and it actually shows a decent story, its nothing crazy, but its better than what most other people are putting out. Also you can actually feel her voice and she can actually sing and she doesn't use much voice effects other than layering. I like watching this guy but he does have very high standards for most artists other than Kendrick 😂, just thought I would give my thoughts as someone who listens to a lot of music and listens to it many many many times over.
For all we know, this could be the start of McRae finding her unique style: hockey pop- infectious, danceable pop tunes featuring the ruggedness and protection of hockey equipment and the sleek and chill atmosphere of the sport itself!

This video hurt my feelings, but since I can't stay done with Tate's music, I gotta say I just have to say that yes her music sounds very formulaic and similar but I still like how it sounds and it makes me happy to listen to. Maybe we're not alike in our music tastes? I hope i don't come back and find a bunch of angry replies on my comments. I know you think you're so cool, but I for one am not a fancy music critic, and if it sounds good, it sounds good, simple. Again, if you aren't going to be nice, just go away. (7 Tate song names in here lol, don't be sad if you can't find them all).
I usually disagree with this guy's reviews, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Tate is overrated. My friend loves her and begged me to listened to Think Later. I tried to and really wanted to give Tate a chance. I just...couldn't get halfway through the album. All of the songs sounded the same and I kept zoning out. Tried her debut album as well and same thing happened. I probably would have loved Tate 6 years ago when I was in high school and only listened to pop. It's just not my style anymore, only really listen to old pop music for nostalgia. I will say though...I've seen clips of Tate's performances, and she is a pretty good dancer. But 20 years ago, she just would have been a back-up dancer for Britney or Christina, not a popstar herself. Social media and Gen Z's low attention span (saying that AS a Gen Z) are making too many popstars become big when they shouldn't.
Hi. I have a really good ear, I am a producer, song writer and formerly music director at a radio station. I disagree with you, Think Later is stuffed full of hits. However, I agree with you that Tate is stuffed full of sex appeal. The Greedy Chorus vocal is backed up with a vocoder, robotic voice, however it is blended, this obviously left an impression on you. If you hear when Tate sings live, she sings the same way as on the albums. Would you prefer she sing flat? or belt like an Opera singer? Tate does the sexy baby voice better than Brittany herself. The backing vocals are touched hard to create separation. Did you expect John Anderson or Marnard James Kenan to write the lyrics for Exes? If you want "real" lyrics, you get them on Plastic Palm Trees, Calgary and Not Alike. Exes was a cute lil nonsense tune written in 20 minutes, it's fun, it's dumb, it feels good to do it, so we gonna do it and you can go hipster in the corner clutching your Radiohead albums. Think Later is an excellent pop album with great songs. If you don't believe me, listen to the live versions that Tate and her band have cranked up to 11. Think Later, the title track on the album is a little trance like, but live IT IS A BANGER!! You are banging your head to it like it is Quiet Riot!!! I'll agree that the production of the next Tate album shouldn't be so safe, tame and polished smooth as Think Later. I agree with you in that manner, Tate and RCA should chase closer to the live sounds and her concert versions which are heavier, harder, amped up and sometimes a banger like Think Later. For example, Guilty Conscience live almost sounds like NIN. You listen to it on the album and think "where is that kickass industrial guitar and the menacing drums?". Now, as a dude that is what we want, neither you or I however are Tate's target demographic which is smoking hot 20 year old girls. they like tame Tate, we want her WILD!! We want to be scared to death of a sexual wild child barely keeping it together. That may not sell as well to young women.
My friend just exposed me to her this weekend (and subsequently got recommended this review), and the first thing I thought when I saw the music video for Greedy was "Oh, their doing the Shawn Desman thing, but with a chick". Then I felt bad, because at *least* Shawn has Get Ready and Shook to fall back on as certified bops, I couldn't find a single fun track from Tate lmao
I don't mean to be an apologist for bland pop albums, but do you think that there is any room to interpret the "plastic palm trees" critique thesis as the artistic point? I personally doubt my own devil's advocate theory because the nuance required for any artist to weave meta-narrative (the state of the genre, how we feel about it, etc.) beyond the surface-level interpretation of their art is tough to achieve and is largely missing from this album, but there are a couple pieces of evidence that still make me wonder. For example, the confusion of the narrative of "exes" that you mention could be as literal as "I don't know how to feel about exes, sour grapes rationalization, etc." to as figurative as "this pop music isn't any one thing, so let's explore that and maybe just own it." Or maybe its simply the normal formulaic gimmick of writing confusing lyrics so that anybody can insert themselves into the music, hear what they want to hear, and buy/stream more albums. Or maybe nothing means anything anymore and I've dissociated all meaning from my own life, somebody please help me.
the only reason i know that tate mcrae is even a real person and not a robot is that my girlfriends sister used to go to dance competitions in calgary back in the mid 2010s with her

Last year it felt like cursed clockwork. I’d get off of a long day at work, turn on some music for the drive home, and that ear-bleeding track “She’s All I Wanna Be” (I refuse to bend to the hipster capitalization skirting) would come on every time. I had to wonder which Eldridge abomination I’d enraged for this to be my punishment. Eventually I developed this Sisyphus complex where I started to enjoy my grueling albatross. However, it ended when it fell off the charts. I heard it again a few months later, and it was like a blind person seeing a burning orphanage first. Saints be praised, my sight is restored! But why would fate be so cruel as to make this be the thing that restores it!? I resent my critical faculties for causing me this much pain.
Yes because streams have always translated to success. Streams mean nothing if you don’t have a solid fanbase, most of her engagement on Spotify or music platforms comes from the playing in stores or background noise. She hasn’t made anything worth consuming as an actual well established work yet. By the way, even with the most copious amounts of Spotify listeners she is not getting a check that clears the way her dog-like fans bark for her. Let’s tone it down & wait until she becomes somebody!
So, let me provide an *actual* review that doesn’t go out of its way to dunk on this album. I think “Think Later” is a fine album. It isn’t ground breaking by any means but something needs to be said about both the production aspect of the album, while generic to some, is a clear indication that Tate Mcrae is changing her musical direction since her first LP “i used to think i could fly”. The main differences between that record and this one being the absolutely top notch performances of the singles as well as the singles themselves. See this is why I take issue with Fantano, he’s always looking for something ground break or something he could latch onto. And while that is fine sometimes music comes and goes like the win. Not every album has to be the next “To Pimp A Butterfly” or “Hounds Of Love”. Its present and in the moment from someone of my generation. Which I think also plays into why I enjoy it a bit more than other people a lot older than me. Will I be listening to this album on repeat like others from 2023? Probably not. But will I still have a good time listening to it? Absolutely. And I think that’s what fantano has forgotten about: The joy music can bring. Think Later has all the joy and fun that a pop record SHOULD have without getting too deep. Perhaps for her third LP Tate will get deeply introspective and truly evolve. But as a transitioning 2nd album, I did happen to like every track but over all i’d give it a solid 7.5/10. If you want a better pop record to listen to I highly recommend Snow Angel by Reneè Rapp or The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan. Till next time.

Personally I really like Tate McRae, I have her entire think later album saved and almost all of her used to think I could fly songs. She has an actual dance background unlike most pop stars. She’s an amazing performer and she can really sing, liking her mostly just depending on your music taste.
Yeah same. I personally enjoy the album. She still has room to grow in the future

Did Anthony really just acknowledge album art in a review? For like a minute? I must be dreaming
He only acknowledges it when he thinks it sucks xd I remember him doing the same for Migos Culture 3
When the music itself doesn't have much to offer, then yeah. Might as well talk about the album art.
besides his reasonings for doing so i'd honestly be very interested to know more of his opinions regarding concepts, album arts and visuals
He also mentioned album art in his Lady Gaga- Born This Way review.
I guess album art is part of music. I can see the purpose in talking about it even if it doesn't directly effect the songs itself.
Yeah as an artiste myself that was off base criticism.
You would take a different shade of black/gray for that. This way, it wouldn't seem like half of her torso just vanished into the void.
that would make sense if she wasn't also wearing white hockey pads on her legs
If her body is meant to be the focus then why are my eyes drawn to the white lettering on the hockey pads
My 16yo sister loves Tate, this review is the green light to bully her and tell her that her music taste is NOT GOOD and I am definitely NOT JOKING

bullcrap music is subjective whatever fantano thinks isn't the end all be all no one should let his reviews dictate your music taste I disagree with his reviews half the time
I'm giving you the upvote, but I have never disagreed harder with you. It may not be AOTY, but it's solid pop, enough to at least rate. The themes of existential numbness, boredom, detachment land decently well. The light trap beats work in her favor, and lend to some very solid remixes (like the REALM mix of Greedy.)
Honestly, I'm growing tired of concept albums - they frequently don't land and cannot sustain over an LP length release.

@@Shane-jg6proops I did it again is actually a really good album in my opinion. I like Baby One More Time too but its more outdated
I mean yeah but looks alone aren’t enough

I’m hypothetically and hilariously using my misogynist card for this one: Only exceptionally good looking while shaking her ass on camera.

I genuinely think both greedy and exs are good and tbh shes a great performer thats what she really has going for her
Well, I won't argue on the more technical side that you have criticised since I don't know much about it myself aside that it's true I'd prefer her vocals to sound more raw, and in fact I love so much more the live version of grave than the recorded one.

How did this get a full review lmao
Or maybe nothing means anything anymore and I've dissociated all meaning from my own life, somebody please help me.

no, the date was always planned like that and it was released on the perfect day
Correct, Greedy went viral so her label pushed an album in less than 2 months that didn't even have a song besides Greddy.
they wanted to make Christmas season I think.
yeah uhhh idk how so many people loveeeee her music i can’t stand her voice personally 😭😭- but our last nights cover of her song is top tier hahahah
Hope you cover Venus by Zara Larsson. Polished pop production with great vocals.
Till next time.
i wish i could make a joke about this album but i seriously don't know who she is
Think later who she is
3:00 You would never use this poitnt to praise Opium's world building. Despite creating new beat selection, visual aesthetic, fashion, and slang specefic to the context they have created. The fact you are measuring this at all is shocking. Even refrencing Miley's "turn" is just wearing more Opium approved brands.
I loved the album 😭😭😭😭
Everytime I hear a song from her, I think 'wtf is she saying???' 😂
