  • Radio broadcast 22 November 1985 with the choir of Winchester Cathedral, directed by Martin Neary, and James Lancelot (assistant organist). We apologise for the fact that the anthem is cut short. The recording was like that when it was donated to the Archive - if anyone has a complete recording, we would be delighted to hear from them.

    Responses: Bernard Rose
Psalms: 108, 109 (Walmisley, Hayes, Stewart)
    Lessons: Hosea 9, w 1-9; St Matthew 10, vv 16-33 (rsv)
    Magnificat “Regale” (Robert Fayrfax)
    Nunc Dimittis: Tone IV (Plainsong)
Anthem: A Hymn to St Cecilia (Britten)
Hymn: Ye watchers and ye holy ones (EH 519)
Organ Voluntary: Kyrie Gott, heiliger Geist (Johann Sebastian Bach)

For my money, this is one of the greatest choirs ever assembled. Dr. Neary's style is so prevalent. I have sung for him in the US with the Grand Rapids Choir of Men and Boys, this is what I wish we could sound like for him. We have achieved moments like this, but this is purely splendid. Such style and grace, much like the director. Cheers.

So happy to have stumbled across this! I am the soloist in the anthem and have not heard it since the 1980s. This was genuinely the anthem solo I loved the most. Thank you so much for capturing. (Anthem start: 23:30).

@@ArchiveofRecordedChurchMusic My daughter has just started singing lessons and I wanted to show her some of my efforts from 'back in the day', but all of that was pre internet, so it's generally slim pickings!

The second chant used for verses 7 - 13 of the first psalm is by Martin Neary's predecessor as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Winchester, the wonderfully aptly named Reginald Alwyn Surplice.

I was in Salisbury choir at this time - given you're accepting incomplete recordings would you like one of Choral Evensong from Salisbury also from 1985, with 15th evening psalms, all music there but minus lessons and prayers?
