When the finisher said you don't need to bleach the cabinets I love how your contractor could tell you were uneasy and he took control and told the finisher to make a sample for you. And then he made sure the finisher would adequately protect the floor. I can see why you love your contractor. The devil is in the details. He gets you.

The guy that's going to do the cabinets makes me very nervous. I don't like when you're explaining something to someone and they're like

Awe! You and Romeo are so cute! I love how you kind of wanted to keep them chippy but you were gonna strip them for him and now you’re so excited that he see how nice they can be as they are haha! Hmmm I think they would look nice either way. I love other kitchens with a bare wood look but I wonder how that will look with the very finished cabinets.
I agree with the comments above. Your contractor is awesome. I wonder if you’ll like the sample he shares without bleaching them.

Had to pause for a minute to say that all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks that MaCenna did ALL of what these 3-4 men are doing in her kitchen here !!!!!!! However, in addition to this, she BUILT the house then the kitchen then the cabinets before staining and hanging each and every one 😮Seems like a long time ago (especially since you've been pregnant and given birth in addition to renovating and shopping and decorating another house inside and out ) NOW putting an addition on entire back of house !!!! OH and let's not forget creating and owning her own hands on candle business, podcast and keeping up a business of Interior Design for others ) It's all sort of mind blowing when you pause to realize just how creative, talented and accomplished she is SIMPLY MIND BLOWING, INCOMPARABLE ,AMAZING,INCREDULOUS . . . I just am in awe and often feel pretty inferior .That would never keep me from watching every video from start to finish . Is there anything you can't do MaCenna ? Cannot wait to see completed kitchen and especially how you decorate it (my favorite part ) I love ,love your taste and am drawn to your particular style. You are certainly one of a kind. Blessings to all your family !

    1. WOOD: You need a good proper sample in order to decide about anything else. Your wood is walnut, whilst your inspiration pictures seem oak or mahogany ... very different undertones. Also age differently. Walnut tends to get waaaaay more orange in time especially when exposed to sunlight (from plenty of experience). What you have now and what it will become is like two different woods. Check with the finisher if there is a UV protective coating they could use.
    2. HOOD: When you look at samples, you need to look at them individually. If you look at samples of different colours close to each other, they affect your vision of each other. It is not ideal to choose a colour without a final sample of your wood finish. Your wood finish will dictate what goes with it or not. Ideally get the sample.
    3. Corbels: You can't really decide before you have decided on the two above. They look lovely as they are, however, will they be the only rustic element of your kitchen? Will they be the only element in that colour? Ideally they tie in somehow... be it by colour, or by style, or something.
    4. Bowing wood: Consider having a chat with your contractor about this. Wood will bow in time even if it starts out straight. What is worrying is that you will have glass in that door. The bowing might break the glass in time. Will your glass be shatter-proof? Usually you would want to have some restraining element on the doors to help them stay straight.
Love your content :) ... love your attitude to life :) ... blessings to your lovely family xxx

The walnut is so beautiful lovely choice and will last more than 100 years with good care ! Coming together beautiful! Yes you can cook in any space will thought during renovations bbq is my favorite! I used to travel the great Lakes with my sisters and husband boat ! We were hone for two weeks at a time ! We cooked roast beef in toaster oven also used a crock pot made soups chili's on rainy days and a electric fry pan and more place we stay at a marina the would have Bbqs to use ! If anchored to a rock in northern Ontario north channel used the left overs a new way then original all Fun! Creative cooking ! Surprise yourself with something new ! Two thoughts, if you look at 10:25 for a side view of the corbel as hung, I think you should add an inch shim to the back of the corbels so they sit forward a bit more, align the front detail with the drop curve of the hood. As it is now they sit so far back, you really don't see the detail looking straight on the hood. Secondly, it's best to have the backsplash, counter, wall paint, and cabinet stain in place before you choose the hood paint colour. Make the hood cohesive with the room palette not the other way around.

  • @kimmyanderson01

I love the character the corbels bring but I would love to see them in the same colour as the rest of the hood. I feel like it would make it feel like one complete unit and make the whole thing stand out rather than separate pieces and a bit out of place. I would love to see it in the dusty cornflower. I think it would look beautiful and stand out in all lighting

    • @ashley3113

    • @idakohu5905
      @idakohu5905 6 місяців тому +1

I agree with the comments on completeness, however I wonder if its possible to give the corbels a wash of the same colour (for consistency) as opposed to a full coat of paint. Would that still look less cohesive. I'm thinking this approach may still share the corbel's natural state rather than distressing after paint?

I have so many things…I thought to myself how much I like your contractor about a minute before you said the same thing. I like how he speaks up and he sounds just like you. He’s a great representation of your style and attention to detail.
I never would have believed that this kitchen gained so much space by removing that centre wall. Amazing
Why not leave the corbels as is (with protective coats) and live for it for awhile? You could always change them later.
I absolutely think painting the hood is the way to go. I would think that it may take a few days to get use to it. I don’t think it matters which of those shades you choose. I think any of them is the right choice. I personally would go the darkest moodiness possible.
What a transformation this kitchen is turning out to be! The whole house, in fact. It’s insane how much you’ve accomplished since starting your channel. I’ve been here since the scrunchy making days 😅. I do feel that the purchase of the cottage was the moment your channel rose to a whole other level.
I’ll forever be the cottage girl. I fell in love with that house the second you showed us. However, the LA house? Absolutely stunning!

@@redsoxexpat because cabinets get pretty banged up during installation. It’s much harder to touch up after installation (especially since it’s stained with a sealer- Patches/touchups of stain and also the sealer will be visible unless you do the whole section again, which means it wouldn’t match the rest of the doors). Less risk of patchiness if all done at the same time after installation.

The whole kitchen is new and smooth and sleek, so I think the corbels should be restored and match the rest of the hood. In the kitchen that hood is your baby! You designed it, you searched the world over (you brought us along) and found corbels to go with it - it's all you! I think the distressed corbels are more of a novelty, and might fit better (the distressed idea) in another area of your home with a similar theme. But I know now, from watching all your stuff, that whatever you decide is going to be fantastic! So far, my two favorite renos that you've done are the cottage kitchen, and the hallway behind the foyer that has the dark wall and the oil painting with the dedicated light shining on it. That vision is such a showstopper! Oh, and the new moody bedroom where you have the baby's temporary changing station gives me the same vibes as the cottage hallway.

Personally I'd leave the corbles as they are, with the seal of course, at least for awhile & wait until everything Is all finished. Then you'll know for sure if that's what to really want. You can always go back & paint them. Once you paint them you probably won't be able to get the original back.. and may regret painting them. They're sauce gorgeous circles, you definitely want them to be as perfect as you can get them! Oh I just love this kitchen & so happy for you guys! Can't wait to see it finished & you enjoying it! I say strip because I'm scared of anything being shabby chic haha, but these are authentically chipped and old so I say go with your gut. You seem excited about leaving them as is.
Cannot express enough how excited I am for the countertops and the pretty stage in the next episode.

Your contractor is amazing. Not just his work ethic and talent but professionalism and courtesy. We have had workers cause a lot of damage by being careless. Damage to walls, carpets, soft furnishings. (One removed an old rusted toilet and placed it right in the middle of the bedroom carpet) but they don’t care because it’s so difficult to get people to do the job you have no choice but to hire them. The house had decades worth of people signing off on dangerous wiring. Thankfully we got a great guy who was furious about the shoddy work. RIP Joe, we miss you 🖤

I am never one to dislike a corbel BUT this kitchen (unlike the cottage ) does NOT have any thing else that's as old or "chippy " as them ??? I'm having a hard time seeing them paired w/ the new stove hood and modern appliances etc. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the blue. Even in one of your inspo pictures when it's pained on board & batten 1/2 wall . Definitely go darker since you do have skylights. I like the French toile personally. Perfect accent color for kitchen and endless decor possibilities w/ all the pieces you've been collecting !! The excitement is contagious. Would love to see a newer photo of Cade 💙

The kitchen is looking so beautiful; your vision is coming together. As far as the under cabinet lighting, what a brilliant idea your contractor came up with to elevate the lighting. You mentioned that no one would see the lighting unless they looked under the cabinet, but you’d know that it looked more elevated than just putting up the under cabinet lighting. But you may see the lighting when you sit at your table, you’d be surprised at how that lighting is visible. I could see our under cabinet lighting when we sat at our table and I found it annoying, so the idea that your contractor came up with is purely brilliant!

I like the more medium blues. I wanted the dusty cornflower to be a littttle bit dustier. I love the corbels as is. So much character into a newer space. I'm so glad you're painting the hood! I think details can get lost in all neutral spaces and it will really make it the focus of the kitchen.

Macenna if possible, make an oversized moodboard with your paint choice for the walls, cabinet stain, whatever your putting on your backsplash, paint choice for the hood, your flooring bricks, trim/molding color, and corbels as they are and see what you like. You and your absolutely wonderful contractor will make this kitchen soooooo beautiful! I can't wait to see what you decide. Things can always be changed. I love the French Toile if it goes with the wall color. I love the corbels as they are and seal them if they go well with all the other materials. Have fun deciding what you love! Have a beautiful blessed night. 🙏

I would totally leave them chipped. It brings so much character and it's much more authentic looking. I would have chosen De Nimes, I already painted a whole room in that color and it just looks amazing but I do understand that it might be too dark for you. French Toile looks super pretty. The kitchen will look so amazing! All the best from South-West France!

What an amazing experience. Great contractor a pity I am in Queensland Australia. He is awesome. You are not crazy with the paint samples. That is exactly how I pick the colours also. However, after 25 years of painting, our house (old farm house) I do tend to pick safe colours. But then again they are the colours that I love, which are a soft old blue denim colour and a cream colour. My husband and I both love blue, so that is a no brainer. I am onto my last room to strip wallpaper, with 12 foot ceilings and old vj boards ( like shiplap) it has taken a long time. I have had two children and worked full time during those 25 years, but will be happy when I finish. Bear in mind, I have re done lots of the rooms a few times over, as I do love to change things up!! Keep up your great work, and sharing your progress.I can't wait to see the next video. And congratulations on your beautiful baby.

From a food and baby safety standpoint? Get all that old paint off of the corbels. For ease of cleaning and cohesiveness? Paint them to match the hood, which I'm guessing will be that French Toile ❤

If you left the hood neutral, the chipped look on the corbels would be great! But I think, if you go for a dusty blue, which would indeed look awesome with the warm wood, maybe consider stripping the corbels and staining them the same colour as the cabinetry? The kitchen looks beautiful! ✨

We had a little nook like the one over by your door and masked it by doing narrower lower cabinets with rounded shelves off the SIDES (towards the doorway) and covered with an also-rounded countertop over there so it didn't block that flow of traffic. Could be an option if you find it boxes you in too much! Those cabinets are going to be just GORGEOUS stained, oh my goodness! 😍😍

Maybe removing the small cabinet to the right of the hood and adding shelves higher up would give you the open feel when using the door. It would also show off the corbel which is blocked by the cabinet now. Just a thought, as if you need anymore.

Paint the hood the darker blue. Go with your gut! And the chippy paint sealed. Romeo didn't seem to really get involved in the details so him commenting that he likes it the way it is should be the reason you leave it chippy. The bottom line McKenna is that you have an immaculate eye for detail and design anything you do will be beautiful! ❤❤❤❤

I feel like the hood color is dependent on how contrasting you would like it next to the cabinets... lighter or darker.
I prefer the French Toile color because it pairs well with the wall color -- then the cabinets are the show stopper.
Also, personally, I would light sand the corbels, so the old paint isn't rough, and seal them. It's hard to tell coloring through a camera/screen lense!
I'd want the hood/corbels to feel more seamless together, with the cabinets POPPING from the dark stain. Personal thoughts though 🙌

Been watching youtube vids for years without an account, and I finally decided to create an account just so I could comment -I couldn't resist anymore! For the corbels, I think you should get a sample pot of the same color as the hood, but get the pot in flat matte finish. Then mix the color into a small batch of clear coat or some other clear finish medium. Brush it on to the corbels, really push it into the nooks, crannies, and low recessed areas, then with a soft cloth or old t-shirt, immediately wipe it back. This will allow the color to settle into all the lows and existing fine paint cracks and chips. Repeat the step as necessary to get the desired end result and intensity. Basically a color wash. Then seal with clear coat. This will keep the beauty of the existing chippy finish and color of the corbels, but will also marry them with the color of the hood. It will be beautiful. You may need to test the corbels for existing oil based paint finish and choose the new clear coat type accordingly. Practice the technique on a test piece of whatever you have on hand. I love your content and talent! Good luck, whatever you choose to do will be chef's kiss -I'm sure of it!
