there are still a lot of ways to edgeguard meta knight lol! he often will have to resort to A. airdodging on stage, B. ledge drop double jump nado onstage, or C. forward air/glide attack which are all punishable. Especially as characters like marth you have powershield up-B, which could actually KILL the meta knight for nadoing you or glide attacking your shield, and as zss you can down smash > kill him for any approach back on stage. you can make mk exhaust the LGL too
Wolf having "default" attributes because of time constraints isn't unfounded. G&W in Melee shares multiple traits with Mario due to the rushed development.
ganondorf is the most extreme example of this and they just stuck with it in all fairness, by the time brawl came out, his similarities with falcon were more visual rather than functional, but i'd say it is ultimately responsible for his shortcomings in that, while his arms and legs are pretty long, he struggles at super long range even worse than he struggles at super close range
To be clear, the volleyball thing is definitively where the term "spike" comes from. There's no secret lore or "lost to time" aspects of it - the act of slamming something downward is simply called "spiking." It's not exclusive to Volleyball either, when Football players slam the ball down in celebration it's also called spiking the ball.
There's also the fact that people who didn't follow the Smash competitive scene (something that you had to be much more proactive and actually research about given that social media wasn't what it was) were already referring to downward hitting moves as "spiking" without anyone telling them that's what it was called.
@@uuh4yj43 On that note, it was legitimately frustrating that more of my gaming friends weren't into watching sports. This video is FILLED with so many Coney baits Brawl Wolf The 4 tornados clip Dedede recovery Flying Lucas I'm surprised there wasn't a Ness down air again
You got me very excited for the eventual Wolf video! Wolf was my day 1 main in Ultimate, but I'll admit I never played Wolf seriously in Brawl (I was a child and I played Ike only lol). Excited to see how he compares to his Ultimate counterpart, and what kind of Brawl jank he might've been blessed or cursed with lol
Is now a high tier instead of a mid tier. Used to be top tier but people got really good at ledge trapping and Wolf got nerfed due to being too good for an underdeveloped meta.
Wolf in Brawl is definitely a specimen. His Up Air was a more "fair" version of MK's (7 frames vs 2), his Back Air was obscenely good (6 frames with decent knockback and disjoint), still had the swordie Forward Air, a Forward Smash that had the range to slide into DMs (but was hilariously unsafe and unreliable to get 2 hits), and had the 2nd best Down Smash (just behind MK). Also Scarring and DACUS. They were funny things to do. But there was no way to secure good follow ups, he didn't have a chain grab (or any good grab), his recovery was and still is ass, his ability to camp was not very good, and was a heavy-fastfaller which meant he was chaingrab food for everyone. A very interesting and fun character to play in lower stakes environments.
2:17 fun fact about the nipple spike is that the launch angle discrepancy between different parts of falcon dair also existed in smash 64 which predates meteor smash canceling
This is incorrect and I don't know where you got it from. I'm looking at the data right now and Falcon's dair sends at an 80 degree angle downwards no matter which hitbox it is. And the reason I thought it was incorrect and checked in the first place is because I played 64 competitively for many years and never heard this or got the impression it has more than one tracectory.
In Melee you don't meteor cancel *within* the 8 frame window, you can meteor cancel at any time *after* the 8 frame window. If you try to meteor cancel within the first 8 frames it won't work. But 8 frames is very quick, and you can effectively meteor cancel almost instantly after getting hit (quick enough that Puff can actually meteor cancel into rest vs the attacker)
@ Yeah it’s really similar to brawl except they just increased the time you have to wait in brawl before meteor canceling so that meteors are less useless. If you try to meteor cancel within the 8 frames in melee you get penalized for trying too early and will be unable to attempt a meteor cancel again for 40 frames, so the way the video explained it is very wrong
When i played brawl there used to be this absurdly aggressive marth player who was actually pretty great at edge guarding meta knight and dominated most of the meta knight players at our local. He was unfortunately dogshit against ice climbers and would just get dumpstered by handoff combos constantly so he struggled to make top 8s because two of our best players were icies
Leon was a legend at hyper aggressive off stage marth play he was one of the top marths (japan had mikeneko who was usually better at covering the on stage) then Mr Rs marth was one we would see show up here but he wasn't half as aggressive as leon was. Leon taught me suffocating aggression in brawl him and Nario were like two of the few brawl high level players that were insanely aggressive in an otherwise defensive meta. but yeah after fighting leon i completely changed how i edge guard lol hearing leffen comment about it in early ult was funny cause hes not wrong but damn leon suffocating you when your at the bottom of the blastzone was nuts lol

@ the difference between Cloud and doc is that the first one has a better air speed, a up-b that goes farther, side-b and airdodge as mixups, and even if you get hit, it charges your limit. Doc doesn’t have the same mixup potential and recovery distance, even compared to limitless Cloud

Dedede had a bit of sauce and was a decent enough mid tier. Snake was notoriously the third heaviest playable character and was arguably the best non-meta knight character in the game. Overall though, yeah heavys were pretty sad in Brawl and tbh I would argue they didn't get "good" until Ultimate.
To be fair heavyweights have been notoriously bad in basically every Smash game, ironically Brawl probably has the contender for least garbage superheavyweight in the series because Dedede is privileged with some of the best jank in the game. Playing other platform fighters really puts into perspective how tight of a leash heavies get in these games. Smash devs really said that because you hit for 20% once you're never allowed to play the videogame. Bowser since his introduction spent 4 games in a row having almost nothing to work with, shit's crazy lmao.
Gosh, this makes mii want to see a similar vid about Smash 4 edgeguarding. Ledge trumps and magnet hands made it look at a glance like recovery had been made trivial, but so much of the meta (especially on latest patch) was defined by offstage game. Chars like Bayo and Sheik were famously tricky to edgeguard but excellent at doing it, while chars like Cloud or even surprisingly Diddy were often at their weakest while recovering. Hopefully someday someone who loves Smash 4 as much as you love Brawl will make a channel just like this one.
It's less that and more that Wolf had to wait until hitstun was over in order to act, much like getting hit with a launching move for any other character. Basically, Wolf does not have a meteor cancel. And yes, this game is indeed very jank.
I hated meteor canceling as a mechanic. They nerfed meteor smashes enough in Melee by making most of them slow to execute, and it makes the spikes MUCH better in comparison to traditional meteor smashes. Brawl did a good job in nerfing meteor canceling, but I would have preferred if it removed the mechanic entirely like in SSB4 and Ultimate. Meteor smashes/spikes are so much fun to use (especially since I’m a Mario main in most Smash games), and while they’re risky and difficult to land, they’re immensely rewarding. Melee and Brawl took away some of that reward (mainly Melee) with meteor canceling.
Wolf really is just a hodge podge of a character. So much so that I feel the need to mention that not even in a video about him but about a mechanic that really just rubs in how rushed he ended up being.
No mention of ledge occupancy? The threat of occupation was an important part of edge guarding before Smash 4 removed it altogether. Brawl still has it but it's also dramatically nerfed, even if it results in character models being on top of eachother lol
A thing I like about edgeguarding in Brawl is how the extreme aerial staling tends to negate the "rinse-and-repeat" edgeguards you see in other games. Sometimes you just farm damage back airing your opponent offstage, until it gets so stale you can't continue it. It's like an anti-infinite mechanic
*when referring to magnet hands* "not as generous as sm4sh and ultimate" Bro I have, less than a couple months ago, seen a brawl mario grab the ledge from an entire heights length away/under, same with toon link in brawl.
the correct answer to "how to edge guard meta knight" is actually "why are you not playing meta knight yourself"
The correct answer to edgeguard meta knight is to simply unplug his controller
Just kill the Meta Knight smh
That's still not the correct answer, it's rather to throw the question back to your opponent.
"Oh yeah, How are YOU going to edge guard Meta Knight?"
The objectively correct answer is flamethrower
