      @@marinaagriopoulou3933 thank you and I appreciate your remark about the olives. I guess you are correct and Kalamata is rather a city not an island. 😂

    Some info I think would be helpful:
    Kalamata is not an island, it is a city in Peloponesse. Also, most neighboorhoods in Athens have farmers' markets once a week, so most people buy fresh products there or at the supermarket. Central market sells mostly to restaurants. I am an Athenian and I've never bought anything from the central market. There is no reason to go to the centre just for that, plus it doesn't feel too clean to be honest.
    Enjoyed the video, hope you had a good time in Greece!

      Thank you so very much for your input. For some reason I had it in my head that Kalamata is an island but you're indeed correct it is a city. Also, appreciate your comment about the central market. As a travel vlogger I am always fascinated about local markets and I'm sure this market has its busy days too despite not being very clean lol.

      @@travelwithpeace1 Definitely! Especially before Christmas and Easter it is super busy. Us younger generations don't prefer it but it's worth visiting!

      Varvakeios market the central market of Athens has been completely transformed. All the glass displays have refrigeration and the health department is visiting it daily making checks. There is not comparison with the past. The feet you saw are not of a cow but of big porks and solely been used for a type of soup named patsas. It’s eaten after a big party with heavy drinking to prevent the stomach ulcers because it’s fatty. The fish you asked is local cod and it’s delicious under some recipes and especially roasted is very soft and tender. We eat it more on a National holiday. The sellers where right. There are close to 4 million people and near the Center reside at least half a million and they prefer the fresh products. Napoleon was eating in exile lamp’s head. He ate it with soup and consumed the cheaks one day the other tongue and the last brain. All different types of meat and different tastes. So instead of getting desperate by his captors he was getting by quite along. Kalamata isn’t definetely an island but a city south of Peloponnese very close to Sparta. The best variety of olives are produced due to increased sunlight. Also quite good olives and oil are produced by the island of Mytilini or Lesvos ( surely you have heard it due to the massive illegal immigration that is receiving from people coming from Turkey with boats). Lesvos is the record holder in sunshine in Greece. It sunshine period is over 330 out of 365 days every year. Ideal to produce huge amounts of solar power.

    Vendors are not friendly to him because he is very ignorant about the product and the culture

    • @travelwithpeace1
      @travelwithpeace1  8 місяців тому +1

      Let's say it as it is. The reason some vendors weren't friendly is only because most of the vendors aren't from Greece, and most of them don't speak a word of English. Nothing else! Thanks

    Well, after watching this video I know where I will never visit while in Athens. Seems like a lot of very unfriendly, sketchy-looking people working in this market. Planning a visit to Greece which will include Athens and we always rent apartments and cook at least one meal a day so we love local markets. I assume there must be other, more friendly markets in Athens.

      Thanks. We'll, it's all about perspective and the way one would see things. But I can relate to your feelings. Indeed, many of the sellers at this market are foreigners from a variety of different countries. But it is the biggest fish market in Europe.
      One more tip for you is, you should watch the other video. I have from the same market of the live Greek traditional music party that takes place every Saturday night at the bar there. Something you shouldn't miss.
