Sir Norman Hartnell combined flamboyant flair with the dignity and assurance of traditional British style. The designer who famously quipped, “I despise simplicity. It is the negation of all that is beautiful” was known for his opulent yet elegant designs, lavishly adorned embroidery, and use of intricate details. His repertoire of clients included Hollywood starlets, socialites, princesses and queens, all of whom were drawn to the glamour and palatial pomp exuded by his designs.❤

I so wish fashion would go back to his 50's designs. The dresses he made especially for Her Majesty QE2 are breathtaking.. especially her coronation dress. They're exquisite with the beading, too. 💜👑

Growing up as a boy in Texas in the sixties, I thought Hartnell just automatically dressed the British Royal Family! So much of what he did reminds me of the best of Dior in the forties and fifties: unapologetic luxury.

Thank you for the this video. Hartnell's designs referenced the English monarchy's history to remind the world that Elizabeth was a Queen rather than a politician's or businessman's wife - branding before branding 😉. His designs definitely had influence in the fashion world at the time and as reference years later - designers borrowed and modernized for the public in each country/market.

Another interesting video, shame you did not mention his work for Queen Mary as he did a lot for her and brought her look into the modern age. People who knew him said how kind and charming he was, such a shame his business was so poorly managed, leading to a sad end.

It’s not Bruton Road, it’s Bruton Street. Hartnell was at No 10. At No 17, Princess Elizabeth of York, later Queen Elizabeth II, was born in 1926.

I am not saying he wasn't a great designer - he was, but he was also the personal favorite of the Queen Mother. I don't think he did any justice for the Queen designing gowns for her that her mother would also wear. Even through the 60's he sort of missed the swing in fashion..... IMO, his designs aged the Queen and did nothing to promote a "modern" monarchy.

I think, Hartnell’s influence on royal fashion extended beyond his lifetime. His approach to dressing royalty set a precedent for how fashion could be used to project a particular image of stability, tradition, and sophistication.
Norman Hartnell’s contributions to royal fashion not only defined the visual style of the British monarchy but also solidified the relationship between fashion and the image of the British royal family in the public eye…But it is time to change😉

He ruined royal fashion dragging it back to an older era and keeping the Queen and her sister in dowdy and fussy old women clothes in the prime of their womanhood. This is why the Queen looked so old fashioned and antiquated next to the likes of Jackie O.
