I’m trying it this Wednesday when I speed run - not sure how it’ll go. I have a feeling I’ll start strong but end up switching it up unintentionally. 💜🧩
"Build-as-you-rummage" is a perfect term for Vikis style. :-) I was also hugely impressed by her style and technique at BOTYP. In my opinion you should definitely give "full flip" at least one more try. Not for us viewers, but for your own training program for worlds. I think that for certain puzzle types this method will have its merits - even when you are not preferring it. See it as a variant of the rummage technique: On a 500 piece puzzle the flipping will cost you 3-5 minutes. But then, instead of rummaging in the box to find suitable pieces to place, you do the rummaging with visible pieces that are positioned around your building space. Broadening ones personal palette of techniques seems valuable to me. Often one ends up using hybrid methods or one even switches methods (say, you start with build-as-you-sort and then switch to build-as-you-rummage or a full flip when you are half into the puzzle and struggling) In any case, have fun!
Others have also suggested that I don't give up on Flip just yet. And maybe with 500 pieces it would be less daunting. So yes, I will give it another try. I'm collecting a lot of practice puzzles which is great. I'll definitely have enough to try all these techniques. 💜🧩
Build as you rummage would likely have helped on this puzzle since you could have aimed for certain colours as you went. I don't see full flip working for you at worlds, but heck it's worth trying on one puzzle, especially if you are doing multiple 500s over the next few weeks. I'm not sure that build as you rummage would work as well for you as sorting since you are handling so many pieces so many extra times and it's so easy to flip them over multiple times in a box, even if you are careful. Perhaps on a tray though? Worlds isn't about winning. It's about having fun with a whole lot of people who love puzzles.
Exactly, Worlds is for fun and meeting people. I just don’t want to disappoint anyone thinking that we will be a super team. A super team of puzzle loving friends is more appropriate 😜 Definitely a key thing is not to handle the same piece too many time. 💜🧩
I personally like full flip. If you pick two puzzles I can get, I would volunteer to build as I sort the same image you do and then full flip on the second puzzle. To get you some comparable stats.
I was surprised to see such a large time difference between the full flip and the full sort on a gradient puzzle. Looking at your initial flipped pieces they looked ready to pick out and use, not much slower than if they had already been sorted. Definitely would have had a very different outcome with a puzzle with much less color variation.
I just think that I am not good at the full flip. I have tried it a few times but I just struggle with focusing. I doing a speed run tomorrow and might give it another try on a 500 piece puzzle. 💜🧩
I do a combination of methods, but I am not worried about speed. I rummage in the box, for edges, certain colors and build and then I flip puzzle pieces on cardboard boards. I am inspired to try speed puzzling, when I get some 500 piece puzzles, because I prefer larger
You should try it, at least once anyways, just to see if you enjoy it and how you get on. It's just so fun to go to competitions. We had people at our last one that just came to puzzle and have fun, not try to be competitive. I love the puzzling community. You could also participate in our next Battle of the UA-cam Puzzlers #BOTYP - details coming mid-May. 💜🧩
I am glad I am not the only one who took quite a long time to do the ribbons one. Of course we don't know how fast you would have been with a full sort. I think you should try a full flip with a 500 piece puzzle. With only 500 pieces you will get a nice overview of all the pieces.
So many times I wanted to just fully sort and then focus on one colour. I may have done it slightly faster but not heaps, it was a tricky image indeed. Thanks again for joining in on the fun. 💜🧩
Thanks for these comparisons.. I find it fascinating…. I usually do a combo of fully flipping all pieces but pushing some into piles if I can pick out distinct sections and also grabbing all edge pieces. I take soooooo long to finish a 1000 piece puzzle so I like seeing what some ways might be to bring down my time… not that my goal is speed but sometimes I get stuck and just want to get to the nearer the end fun part where all prices seem easier to find. Can’t wait to see you all at worlds.
It's always nice to have tips and tricks to help solve a puzzle even if not for speed. The last thing I want are for people to get frustrated with any puzzle. So if I can help them figure out a better method to get through especially those last pieces, that's great! I'm getting so excited and nervous for Worlds!! 💜🧩
It's funny. I never realized there were more than one way to do it. I always flip everything over first and pull out the edges just like I was taught as a kid. I'd like to try a "full sort" method in the future. I'm working on a 2,000 piece right now and table space was rough when you do the full flip.
Full flip on 2,000 pieces - that would take up so much room! I will try it again on the 500 pieces as maybe it's a feasible method. I just have trouble focusing on pieces when they are all over the place. 💜🧩
I say try it again for the next series of 500 Ravensburger. I think the gradient may not have been the best test for this, however it did teach you which method works best for a gradient. I'm so excited to see you guys at world's!!!!
I am so excited for Worlds - I can't wait to meet Janette, Vicky and Jubie in person, as well as all the other puzzling fanatics out there. I doubt there will be a true colour gradient given to us at worlds but that flower reflection one from last year is somewhat of a colour block. I'm sure full sort would also be best for a colour block...??? 💜🧩
We will have like maybe 2 days to try and practice as much as possible before the competition starts. We will also need to have puzzles though. Maybe if we each bring one or two, that would help. 💜🧩
This series was really interesting. The results were pretty suprising for me. And I think you should definitely try the full flip method for the next set of puzzles as well. There are many speed puzzlers who use that almost all the time.
I know right? I feel like I’m at a disadvantage that I don’t like the full flip when that seems to be the preferred technique by so many speed puzzlers. 💜🧩
Yeah, I'll give Flip another chance. The puzzle might get flipped out the window 🤣🤣🤣 but I'll give it another go on the smaller Ravensbuger puzzles once I try it out. 💜🧩
Lovely hoodie 😊 You can absolutely do it under one hour! I think there is no need to do the full flip again when you will not use that technique. I would rather see the build as I rummage statistics because I like to do my puzzles that way too. I always did because I’m too lazy to properly sort the pieces 🙈 I’m looking forward to see the results of the next statistics. Thank you so much for doing it! I was thinking maybe you could check city landscapes for the next experiment. They are pretty similar pictures and they had one at the last competition as well.
Thanks! I had this hoodie and a t-shirt made up and love them. I want to get a tote done and more clothing as well. City landscapes - that’s a good suggestion. I was hoping to use some of the Ravensburger 500 puzzles that I already have on hand - none are city landscapes though. I wish it was easier for me to find the puzzle I want here in NZ. Just got to keep looking and practicing as much as possible! 💜🧩
🤣🤣 I don’t know about being a superstar! A friend used their Cricut machine and made me a t-shirt and zip hoodie. I have a tote bag that needs doing as well as and I want more shirts. 💜🧩
I also use a variation of the rummage technique. I guess I'd call it rummage-sort-build. The key is to use sorting trays (Ravensberger has some). Any pieces not in a tray stay in the box.
I have to look up at Worlds what we will be allowed to have in the line of sorting trays. Definitely might be useful to eventually sort my piece shape if needed for solid colour areas. 💜🧩
@For the Love of Puzzles Ah, right. The rules. Luckily I don't have to worry about that (although my husband says that referring to the photo/poster is cheating 😄). Good luck to you! I'll be watching with great interest!
It would be interesting to see how long you could do the ribbons by full sort method now, of course easier because familiar with it now but if a huge difference in time , would really confirm that is fastest method for you on that type of puzzle. And even do this method on water drip too
Maybe I should have redone it with the full sort to see how much faster (I'm assuming I would be faster) I would have been. I've already sent them off to another friend to try as she's been so lovely sending me 500 piece Ravensburger puzzles for training. 💜🧩
I'm a build as I flip, cos I find sorting boring. If I sort it's very basic sort (like forest vs sky). After the flip, I pick what I want to build. You use the picture a lot and you said you like the sorting, it sort them in your head as well, so try variants of that and fine tune it. It's all about the fun
I could see the build as you flip being a good method for some images. I just can’t seem to wrap my head/eyes/focus/attention when all the pieces are scattered - it’s almost triggering and I want to tidy them up. 💜🧩
For more busy, 500 piece the result might be very different. I'm not sure if the full flip can ever beat the full sort, maybe with even smaller ones, like 300? Anyway, I'm always enjoying watching your experiments :)
I'm also thinking the results might be quite a bit different. Maybe on smaller ones like you suggest but I also just can't see how a full flip can beat a full sort. Especially if you don't do any sorting at all while flipping. 💜🧩
Wow, you were so persistent to do your technique from start to finish! ❤️ My head would have just exploded! 😂 The image was super difficult for that but you did so great, amazing!! 🤩✨ But I have to say that I understand the technique of Viki puzzles even less than yours... 🤣🙈 I'm certain she would be even quicker if she used any other method, I hope she'll test out something. 🙂
I wanted to flip the table to many times and just sort out all the pieces but I persisted. I'm looking forward to teasing out Viki's technique as I rummage. 💜🧩
"build as I rummage" sounds like what I do. I'm too lazy to flip them all over, so I just leave them in the box until I'm down to just one or two sections
I've just noticed that on the screen you wrote World pieces. Isn't the name of your team World piece? I think the "s" removes the word play on piece and peace.
Maybe flip and sort (into areas of pieces) but only for 500 pieces? Do you know how much table space you will have at Worlds - could be interesting to restrict yourself to that footprint. You are becoming a jigsaw scientist with these experiments and statistics!
I was thinking of table space and for Worlds, I need to limit myself to using half the space on my trestle table. I have to look up for Pairs but I think for Teams we have the full table. A jigsaw scientist, I love that! 💜🧩
I know right?! You have a really be able to see the pieces and visualise exactly where they go. It’s loads of fun practicing and I can’t wait to try it. 💜🧩
Thia is so interesting and informative.. I love Vicky's method as well ... she has a cute name for it. ... can't think of it now. I just love to watch you. Definitely Jeanette sorts everything first. You guys are going to have so much fun. But yeah- last year that guy did the 500 in 32 minutes? Is that even human? 🥰
Vicky's method is kind of like the rummage isn't it? I should ask her. But she doesn't have another name - maybe "shuffle" or something like that. Janette is big time sorter. We already decided for pairs that she will sort and I will start to build - if we feel the image is fit for that method. Yes, last year Alejandro did a 500 piece in like 34 minutes. Insane! I hope we get to meet him. 💜🧩
One more remark. I definitely think you are not at any disadvantage if you don't like the full-flip method and will not use it in competitions (give it a try in training, nevertheless). You will surely know the surprising "one-handed, superrelaxed, one-piece-at-a-time 15-20 minute full sort"-technique by Norwegian Kristin at Worlds22. If Kristin had forced herself to do a full flip, she probably would had ended up 50th instead of 2nd. :-)
Yeah, Judy said she doesn't like to have too many pieces everywhere. I got a t-shirt and a zip hoodie made with my channel logo - a friend used her Cricut machine to make them for me. But for Worlds, we do want to have t-shirts made for pairs and teams. 💜🧩
Yes - if you look on my UA-cam Community tab, you will find them there - maybe two posts ago...? I also posted them on my Instagram page. Let me know if you can't find them. 💜🧩
This has all been very interesting trying all these methods of doing a puzzle. In the end whatever method you use is what works best for you, the one you are most comfortable with. 💚 I know that the rummage method that some people use would get me frustrated. 😤 For me it would be a case of looking at the image and deciding which method is best suited for it. I'm currently doing a jigsaw which is difficult to really sort in any sensible way. It is a 1000 piece W H Smith (UK) jigsaw called Around the World by Lars Stewart. It consists of jigsaw pieces with different images on each piece, 8 images by 11 images, so 88 different images on each jigsaw piece. This will take me some time!! ⏲You may be able to find a picture of it by searching Google. Look forward to the next video. 😊
I tried looking up the puzzle you mention but I couldn't find an image. I'm trying to picture what it looks like but am having a hard time. It sounds difficult though. You got this! Just take your time 💜🧩
Really?! Flip was such a pain in my butt. 🤣🤣🤣 Okay okay, I'll give Flip another chance when I redo the experiment using four 500 piece Ravensburger puzzles. 💜🧩
SO worthwhile doing this experiment. Can't wait for build-as-you-rummage!
I’m trying it this Wednesday when I speed run - not sure how it’ll go. I have a feeling I’ll start strong but end up switching it up unintentionally. 💜🧩
Loved watching this series. Thank you for doing it. My vote is to scrap the full flip.
I'm definitely not a fan of the full flip - don't think I ever will be. Maybe on small puzzles of like 200 pieces. 💜🧩
"Build-as-you-rummage" is a perfect term for Vikis style. :-) I was also hugely impressed by her style and technique at BOTYP.

Love this video, I understand the struggle but at the end you find the best way to work for you. ❤😊
It was well worth the test - and now to redo using more picturesque images adding in the build-as-I-rummage technique. 💜🧩
Gostei muito dessa série de puzzle... Vou fazer uns aqui no meu canal também
Legal! Estarei interessado em ver quais resultados você obtém e qual método você prefere. 💜🧩
Build as you rummage would likely have helped on this puzzle since you could have aimed for certain colours as you went.

Surpreendente! Pensei que seria o mais rápido!! Mas, mesmo assim, parabéns!! Fica bem. Abraços. Tchauuuu
Tive a sensação de que a classificação completa seria a mais rápida, mas não achei que esse método demoraria tanto. 💜🧩
I personally like full flip. If you pick two puzzles I can get, I would volunteer to build as I sort the same image you do and then full flip on the second puzzle. To get you some comparable stats.
Thank you! I follow you on Instagram so when the time comes to test out more of these techniques on different puzzles, I'll give you a message. 💜🧩
Cool experiment! Looking forward to watching all your Ravensburger practicing. I'm rooting for you to make your goal of under 1 hour!
I would be so over the moon if I could get my time under an hour. I'll do my darnedest! 💜🧩

This puzzles are so particular, I always build the border of the puzzles !
I use to always do the border first but not anymore. Especially if the border has a repeating pattern or not much distinguishing details. 💜🧩

judy from addicted to puzzles works out of the box. Are you getting t shirts?
