Us Jrpg gamers are so spoiled with the quality of games of our genre of predilection! It’s so exciting to be a Jrpg fan in the current gaming climate!!
This year is going to be an amazing year. My top picks are DQ 3, Persona 4 golden, Trails (all of them), Suikoden 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 7 rebirth, Sea of Stars, and Eiyuden Chronicle.
From this video my most anticipated is as follows: FE: Engage, Symphonia Remastered, Octopath II, Ryza 3, FF XVI, GF: Relink, DQ: III HD2D, Sea of Stars and Suikoden. Interested in a few others but these are my priorities for the time being.
just got my steam deck last month and it is a godsend for playing jrpgs for pc because of the portability, it will be my main way of playing jrpgs moving forward
For me this year will be all about Like A Dragon and the Trails. That's five games right there already! I'll also pick up P3P and P4G when they come out, as well as Eiyuden Chronicles and the Suiko Remasters. Other than that, I'm keeping an eye out for Dreamsettler and Slayer X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer (not a typo haha) which are a sequel and a FPS spin-off to 2019's Hypnospace Outlaw and N1RV Ann-A (though this game is delayed indefinitely sadly)
I love this video -- your channel's presentation style is so great (positive, inclusive, wide-ranging, with beautiful footage from the games, nicely edited) and my JRPG tastes overlap a lot with yours. It really looks like 2023 will continue the great JRPG renaissance of the genre that has been maybe the best aspect of the videogame world in 2021-22. It feels like half the games I buy and play these days are new JRPGs ... and during PS3 era I never could have predicted how vibrant this genre would be again in the 2020s. These games must be selling well, and I hope the devs enjoy making them too! I have three more definite 2023-released JRPGs that are on my radar, to add to your list: - Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society (Feb 14) - Mato Anomalies (Mar 10) - Trinity Trigger (coming in "Spring 2023")
Thanks for the summary video Alex, Happy New Year! So, the games I have my eyes on, at least for the first six months of the year, are Fire Emblem Engage, Octopath Traveller 2, Cult of the Lamb (physical release), Sword and Fairy: Together Forever (physical collector's edition release), Monster Menu: The Scavenger's Cookbook, Master Detective Archives Rain Code, Final Fantasy 16, and Trinity Trigger. Pretty packed 6 months, honestly. And the year is just starting. I may need to put some of these games off until they go on sale.:)
Woah. When I read the title of this my head spun! FOURTY JRPGs!? I couldn't possibly hope to even play 40 games this year. But hopefully I can get around to some of these! Like a Dragon Ishin, Wo Long, and FFXVI are the ones I'm looking most closely at! But so many of those look great. Fantastic list, thanks!
I want all the Trails games!! Azure, Nayuta, and Reverie. I’ll believe Granblue Fantasy is released when it releases lol. Awesome video, Alex. I can’t wait for almost all these great games and have them in my backlog lol. Happy New Years, brother.
So glad so many games are coming to PC! And man, Suikoden remaster! I never did play through the second one but I finished the first one on PSX though I basically forgot everything except that I really liked it :)
2022 was the year of the backlog for me...I only bought and played a handful of newly released games (Tiny Tina, Soul Hackers 2, and This Way Madness Lies) and instead focused on older games (Atelier Ryza was my game-I-played-this-year of the year!) But 2023 looks AMAZING! On my wishlist for this year: Neptunia Sisters v Sisters (my guilty pleasure series) Grim Grimoire (already pre-ordered from NISA, sorry Alex!) Atelier Ryza 3 (I've fallen in love with this series) Loop8 (that one looks like it will scratch my Persona itch) Sea of Stars (looks amazing!) Suikoden remasters (I already own Suikoden on my Vita but it'll be so much nicer to play these on the big screen) Plus I still have games from 2022 I haven't purchased and need to play: Chained Echoes, Fuga, Kynseed, Jack Move, Trails...as I always say, so many games, so little time!
I'm really excited for Loop8 and Fire Emblem (despite not finishing Three Houses). My problem is, I already have a tower of JRPGs I need to play or finish. Any tips on how I can conquer my backlog? Also excited to see you take a deep dive into Loop8, it's shaping up to be one of the most unique games of the year.
Happy new year Alex and friends! 2022 was cool but i have a feeling 2023 will be one of the biggest years yet for gaming. so many great games in this video i cant wait! Let the games (and game playing) begin!!😂😂
Great list! So many great titles coming and I am going to pre-order quite a few of these. My top game that I want this year is Advance Wars 1+2 reboot camp. I know it's not necessarily a JRPG but as a huge fan of the originals and tactical turn-based games in general this one is way up on my list. Here are a few others not on your list that I am looking forward to: Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord, Trinity Trigger, Demon Gaze Extra, Process of Elimination and Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society
One game you could consider as an upcoming action RPG for 2023 or 2024 is Ravenlok. It's being created by the same studio who made Echo Generations a few years ago. It has a fairy tale feel to it and the game's visuals have a pixelated and solid 3D quality to it.
@@BacklogBattle Yup, the Japanese release. Ordered it straight away after it was announced haha. My Japanese is not amazing or anything but thankfully I am good enough to play games and understand whats going on for the most part.
really excited for the 2 trials games we are going to get this year first azure and then trails into reverie, reverie already have release date confirmed for july 7, already pre order the collectors edition for both
I am really excited for Octopath Traveler II and curious about Forspoken. My most anticipated game is LoZ Tears of the Kingdom though, but I'm trying hard to not have any expectations 🙈
I've been waiting years for SEA OF STARS and can't wait. Chained Echoes was a surprise! YES! One Piece! I'm around ep 800. Trying to catch up! I'm interested in finally playing Persona 4. While I was burned out by PS3 FS and skipped P4 on PS2, I know I want to finally play P4G and Persona 5 soon. Just started Fire Emblem: Three Houses (so late!). Stoked to see a new game though. Oooh. We are getting Isshin? Nice! Wait, a Gaiden game too?! Of course Like a Dragon 2 will be a blast! With so many great JRPGs recently, and Octopath Traveler 2 coming out, I'm not seeing much a reason to ever play the original now. Honestly not sure if I'll get around to OT2 either. Excited for Final Fantasy XVI, FFVII Reunion, and even Crisis Core but I won't be picking up a PS5 for another couple years, sadly. Where is Metal Slug Tactics? It looks so good! Wha? Fuga 2 as well? Oh man, I still want to check out the first one. Suikoden I + II remaster?!?! ABOUT TIME. I'm also a backer to Eiyuden Chronicles.
Great video! I'm a bit sad that Switch is often left out in the platforms list. It's understandable given its limitations but it's all I have 😅. Happy New year! 😊 🥂
I remember seeing this game somewhere and I can't find it, it look and plays like an old fire emblem game but each unit had little armies with them instead of just a singular unit? Help?
i think you're the first person i've heard refer (correctly) to the ryza series as the "secret" series. i mean it's obvious now with the third title, but i think everyone got used to calling it by the protagonist.
The ones I'm most looking forward to so far are Redemption Reapers, the Megaman Battle Network collection, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. I'll put Fire Emblem Engage on the backburner, as I'm sceptical of the story's quality and let down by Intelligence Systems' DLC practices. I'll eventually get the other Like a Dragon games once I've finished Ichiban's adventure, and I might as well put the Xenoblade 3 story expansion on the list too, which may also get its own physical release akin to Torna. Redemption Reapers looks to be a worthy competitor to Fire Emblem, and I love the dark-fantasty setting they've gone for. I haven't played Ender Lillies yet, but that's been on my radar for a while, and hearing the same developers are now working with a former Fire Emblem director (from one of the best-written games, no less) puts this high on my priority list. Considering I'm not the biggest fan of the more "moe" Fire Emblem games like Awakening, Fates and seemingly Engage too, Redemption Reapers' darker, grittier setting is very appealing to me. If Nioh was Team Ninja's take on Bloodborne gameplay, then Wo Long is their answer to Sekiro. I was burnt-out on this subgenre of action games for a while, but Nioh 2 made enough significant improvements over the first game, from its more nuanced and varied combat to a smoother difficulty-scaling throughout, to the point where I managed to blaze through every single mission in the game, DLC and all. I found it hard not to get addicted from time to time, and it managed to surpass Fromsoft's own games in terms of cathartic combat. It goes to show that Team Ninja aren't merely jumping on trends or chasing easy money (which admittedly, Koei/Tecmo as a company are prone to do sometimes), but take their craft seriously and strive to improve with each new game. With that in mind, I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle Wo Long, and the wealth of Chinese mythology its setting has to offer. Megaman: NT Warrior was my first exposure to the Megaman franchise, and I remember watching it every morning before school. It didn't take me until years later to discover its source material; the Battle Network games. Since I haven't played any of them yet, this is a good opportunity for me to have every game in one place, and I'm already in love with its setting and character designs.
It's kinda sad seeing no one talk about the Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection. :( I remember watching this series every Saturday morning as a kid, and the games have a very interesting/unique battle system. I can't think of another game quite like it.
lets see i've watched buffy about 3 times all the way through, so far 2023 is looking like a good year for ports for me, pixel remasters and battle network coming to switch sounds pretty good to me, other then that i'm not sure what im really excited about other then im curious about octopath 2 and engage
Blue Protocal Fire Emblem: Engage Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Final Fantasy 16 Forspoken Granblue Fantasg: Relink Like A Dragon: Ishin! Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man who erased his Name Metal Slug Tactics Octopath Traveler II Redemption Reapers Sea of Stars Wild Hearts And Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, That is all... And other games that I'm looking forward to even though most of them aren't JRPGS nor RPG. All I'm saying is I'm probably gonna get tendonitis in both my thumbs from playing these games!
Love the list! Great job on it! Personally added a few that flew under my radar, like the ff rythm game and trails to azure. I will be passing on forspoken though. Wanted to kinda like it since it was similar to a mage type in an MMORPG , but it felt kinda flat. The gameplay character mechanics were t bad, but the enemies weren't too interesting at al, gameplay wise. Even the giant gator I had to cheese the fight at a range since it didn't really work any other way. Just doesn't seem worth the price for me.
I'm very interested in Octopath Traveller 2, Sea of Stars, and Dragon Quest 3 HD2D. I hope to get into Final Fantasy, but I'm unsure where to start in the series.
games Im planning on playing: FE:E Yakuza Ishin Octopath 2 (once I finish the first one) Ryza 3.... once I finish the other 2 Prolly FF16 but Ill need to wait for player reviews since Squenix ruined quite a few projects recently oh yeah.... Trails into Reverie is a thing coming this year, *sigh* I do need a Hyper RPG now that Im done with last year's Xenoblade and Persona 5 Royal Sea of Stars and Eiyuden looks cool. yeah... I think thatll be my RPG wishlist for the year....
@@BacklogBattle Note: Recently means over the last 5 years or so, not specifically last year. But well, you have the "left unfinished FFXV", basically 90% of their remasters, Valkyrie Elysium, Babylon's Fall and coming this year their NFT scams that they haven't canned. I guess my fear mostly came from FF15 and the remasters.... basically, I hope Squenix didn't tell Yoshi-P they need to put terrible things in FF16
Given how Yoshi-P is one of the three members of the Final Fantasy Committee, I don't think Square Enix can even say anything to him to change the game - especially given how he's surrounded himself with people that he trusts, with several coming from FFXIV! The problem with FFXV comes from the fact that Hajime Tabata was tasked with finishing a game that he didn't even start. That, in and of itself, is a very unique and difficult task. Think of it like a situation where you're being asked to finish someone else's work and you know what I'm talking about. The other problem with FFXV is that it half-heartedly embraces action combat. The fluidity of action is always a telling sign, and these games aren't as responsive as other dedicated action titles. In my opinion, the biggest problem that these action-based FFs have is that they don't just go all in and, instead, try to serve two masters. I'll even lump FF7 Remake in there because they added a "Command mode" that, in my opinion, wasn't even worth the additional work. As the age old saying goes, if you try to please everyone, you please no one. Which is why when Yoshi-P hired DMC5's combat director, I was immediately relieved. No one within Square Enix (Yoko Taro isn't employed by them) really knows how to make interesting action combat, so when I heard about this, I knew that FFXVI was going all in on action - which is great, because that's something that XV or VII-R reluctantly embraces. Yoshi-P knows this very well as still a fan of video games, and I've no doubt he'll pull it off well!
I would also recommend Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (sequel to Breath of the Wild) for those playing Nintendo Switch 😄 have waited so long for that since the first game released back in 2017
Yes sorry. Im new to the genre after Tales of Arise and I just loved all the voice acting in it, that Im unsure of a No dub game. I tried sword and fairy recently and it was only in Chinese I believe and it was just so hard to get into the story.
@@tylerallen921 ah yea that’s definitely a different kind of vibe than most Japanese RPGs. For Atelier, I highly recommend checking my reviews of them. They’re generally not very plot heavy games, as most are coming of age stories, so it’s a lot more about the interpersonal relationships than anything. It’s a “chill” RPG, if you will! If you want something somewhat more familiar, I think Harvestella might be a good one to consider! Let me know what you think of these! Would love to help you out!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Like, I can't imagine how folks can compare the two? But then again, I never cared for Buffy the TV show, so I may just not notice it. But I really don't see any comparisons with P3P holding up in any serious way. P3P is my favorite of the Persona games.
Just a heads up Alex, Cygames holding a "Fes/Festival" for GBVS/Relink soon, so we should be getting a new trailer and news for Relink around the 20-22th of this month. If there's no date announce, then they'll probably save it for Granblue Fantasy's 9th anniversary in March.
The ones i already set my eyes (and my wallet, for some) are: - Trails to Azure (Already preordered) - Trails into Reverie (Gonna preorder it soon) - Megaman Battle Network (Loved the anime, i'm hyped asf) - Fire Emblem Engage (it looks cool, i want to play all "modern" FE games sooner or later) - Raincode (I freakin LOVE DR) Persona also, but i already have P4G and P3Fes at home waiting for me to be re-played so i have to skip on Portable for now v.v
what Wild hearts is made by team ninja? they made 2 games at same time? did they grow studio members? edit: nah it's made by omega force other Koei team
Buffy is my favorite show of all time. Ive watched and rewatched the series at a minimum 20 times. P3 is not even remotely similar to buffy. Theyre both great though.
Yo! You were in my rec section, so thank UA-cam-you gotta sub in me! Anyway, thanks for the list, truly thankful! I procrastinate like you would not believe when it comes to video games! And of course, the Japanese Role Playing game HAD to be my favorite genre of video games! There are a good chuck here I know I won't get bored any time soon! Weee, let's GO! 2023!
That is a good list, rpg lovers will be eating well. But you left out the most hype rpg that is still flying under the radar....Sacrifire is going to be great!
I wasn't a big fan of the FF7 remake. Since it was Midgar only, the best parts of the original, like Fort Condor and the Golden Saucer were left out. Hopefully the next one fixes this.
Persona 3 is my favorite but Persona 4 and 5 are better games. Best advice I could give a new fan is, don’t fall into the trap of fanboying over one or the other. 3/4/5 are all bangers and you will miss out if you don’t play all 3 to completion.

Small correction on Wild Hearts, it's a game from Omega Force, the Dynasty Warriors studio, not Team Ninja
From this video my most anticipated is as follows:
FE: Engage, Symphonia Remastered, Octopath II, Ryza 3, FF XVI, GF: Relink, DQ: III HD2D, Sea of Stars and Suikoden.
Interested in a few others but these are my priorities for the time being.
Definitely good to prioritize! 40 games is already a lot if you’re a fan of these games!
Wow! This is the go to video! Great list and extremely helpful! So much hype for a lot of these omg!!!
This is gonna be a great year for gaming. We’re getting three Trails games, I absolutely cannot wait.
Thanks for this extensive list of upcoming JRPGs! I'm very interested in Redemption Reapers, been craving some old school fire emblem lately 👀
You're very welcome!
I can't wait for the Gensou Suikoden remasters and Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes!
Still gotta get through my backlog of JRPGs
Trinity Trigger is also a game that they had announced would be coming to the west sometime in 2023 as well. It's very reminiscent to Secret of Mana
I was going to mention this! I was surprised Alex left it off the list.

I surprisingly like the aesthetic of a 2d sprite on 3d environment.
HD 2D is amazing
Sea of stars, DQ 3, ff 16 are my top 3 most anticipated for this year.

Happy New Year bro!! 👌🏾
Also Fire Emblem Engage 🤩
I saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer! Until today, it is my absolute favorite coming of age / mystery series of all time

really excited for the 2 trials games we are going to get this year first azure and then trails into reverie, reverie already have release date confirmed for july 7, already pre order the collectors edition for both
Friendly reminder, that Monster hunter rise will also be available on xbox Game Pass on release.
Now I'm slowly finishing my jrpg backlog before new jrpgs come out.
I am really excited for Octopath Traveler II and curious about Forspoken. My most anticipated game is LoZ Tears of the Kingdom though, but I'm trying hard to not have any expectations 🙈
Zelda will be good!
ABOUT TIME. I'm also a backer to Eiyuden Chronicles.
kinda insane if ff16 and ff7-2 actually drops in the same year
Great video! I'm a bit sad that Switch is often left out in the platforms list. It's understandable given its limitations but it's all I have 😅.
Happy New year! 😊 🥂
There are still a ton of games for the Switch on this list though, thankfully!
I remember seeing this game somewhere and I can't find it, it look and plays like an old fire emblem game but each unit had little armies with them instead of just a singular unit? Help?
I hope octopath traveler 2 will feature interactions between characters
I’ve got news for you in an hour or two 😉
And here it is! ua-cam.com/video/UZplgE6lMDs/v-deo.html
@@BacklogBattle thanks! ❤
Def buying the trails games, final fantasy 7 and 16, Like a dragon. Also interested in blue protocol and granblue if my wallet allows me to xD.
All great games! At least Blue Protocol will be free!
i think you're the first person i've heard refer (correctly) to the ryza series as the "secret" series. i mean it's obvious now with the third title, but i think everyone got used to calling it by the protagonist.
It's similar to how the previous series have been called, so I figured calling it that would make sense!
Isn’t eternights coming this yr ? That strange persona style game
Already played both Trails games.
All of them, I want all of them.
Reverie does have a release date, its July 7th.
It’s reflected in both the Chapter markings AND the pinned post. The video was made well before the announcement.
I would love a sequel to triangle strategy
It's kinda sad seeing no one talk about the Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection. :(
I remember watching this series every Saturday morning as a kid, and the games have a very interesting/unique battle system. I can't think of another game quite like it.
Let’s hope with this release that more people will talk about the Battle Network series and shows!
lets see i've watched buffy about 3 times all the way through, so far 2023 is looking like a good year for ports for me, pixel remasters and battle network coming to switch sounds pretty good to me, other then that i'm not sure what im really excited about other then im curious about octopath 2 and engage
Finally I can play Lyn in Fire Emblem once again, I wonder if they get more lore and story development.
Definitely a huge chunk of the list that I have already 😂
And to think that this is only composed of what we know so far!
What game is the women in the purple in the thumb from
Octopath Traveler 2!
Blue Protocal
Fire Emblem: Engage
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Final Fantasy 16
Forspoken
Granblue Fantasg: Relink
Like A Dragon: Ishin!
Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man who erased his Name
Metal Slug Tactics
Octopath Traveler II
Redemption Reapers
Sea of Stars
Wild Hearts
And Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, That is all...
And other games that I'm looking forward to even though most of them aren't JRPGS nor RPG. All I'm saying is I'm probably gonna get tendonitis in both my thumbs from playing these games!
Still full from the video game feast that was 2022. How the heck am I supposed to play all these games in 2023? THESE ARE JUST THE RPGS!!!
Well, since I collect rpgs, I will be getting them all...eventually...most on sale
games are getting so good now even the shovelware games are starting to look like AAA ps2 rpgs
I agree! The mid-tier games are mostly pretty decent and just getting better!
I hear ya! And at $70, it’s a risky risk to take! Understandable!
I'm very interested in Octopath Traveller 2, Sea of Stars, and Dragon Quest 3 HD2D. I hope to get into Final Fantasy, but I'm unsure where to start in the series.
so many games to play so little time aaaaaaaa
games Im planning on playing:
FE:E
Yakuza Ishin
Octopath 2 (once I finish the first one)
Ryza 3.... once I finish the other 2
Prolly FF16 but Ill need to wait for player reviews since Squenix ruined quite a few projects recently
oh yeah.... Trails into Reverie is a thing coming this year, *sigh* I do need a Hyper RPG now that Im done with last year's Xenoblade and Persona 5 Royal
Sea of Stars
and Eiyuden looks cool.
yeah... I think thatll be my RPG wishlist for the year....
Square Enix ruining a few projects recently is news to me! Care to elaborate?
P3p and p4 golden are day one pick for me
Finally, someone who says Suikoden correctly.
I would also recommend Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (sequel to Breath of the Wild) for those playing Nintendo Switch 😄 have waited so long for that since the first game released back in 2017
I never seen anyone go into the TV on buffy
How are the Atelier games with no English? That makes me unsure to try them even though they look great.
You mean without English dubbing?
Thanks much for the tips. As I said, I’m a newbie to the genre and your channel is great for me. Thanks!
I thought tales of symphonia will have a switch release ?
It's been updated everywhere else like the pinned comment and the chapter description
40 JRPGs lol I'll be lucky if I can complete two of them this year!
Someone actually complained about that! That’s almost one RPG every week and a half for one year!
What are the games on the thumbnail?
Atelier Ryza, Fire Emblem Engage, Octopath Traveler 2
Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Like, I can't imagine how folks can compare the two? But then again, I never cared for Buffy the TV show, so I may just not notice it. But I really don't see any comparisons with P3P holding up in any serious way. P3P is my favorite of the Persona games.
I wish Blue Protocol had a Nintendo Switch version and was offline.
The ones i already set my eyes (and my wallet, for some) are:
- Trails to Azure (Already preordered)
- Trails into Reverie (Gonna preorder it soon)
- Megaman Battle Network (Loved the anime, i'm hyped asf)
- Fire Emblem Engage (it looks cool, i want to play all "modern" FE games sooner or later)
- Raincode (I freakin LOVE DR)
Persona also, but i already have P4G and P3Fes at home waiting for me to be re-played so i have to skip on Portable for now v.v
what Wild hearts is made by team ninja? they made 2 games at same time? did they grow studio members?
edit: nah it's made by omega force other Koei team
Yea my bad! Someone in the comments posted a correction!
Buffy is my favorite show of all time. Ive watched and rewatched the series at a minimum 20 times. P3 is not even remotely similar to buffy. Theyre both great though.
Thanks for that clarification!!
@@BacklogBattle cant stress this enough though: theyre both great
Alternative tittle: 3 RPG I'll really be playing because JRPG takes too much time and there's too many games who release each year
I hope dragon quest 4 5 6 get the HD 2d treatment
Grim grimoire gameplay is like a RTS game.
That is a good list, rpg lovers will be eating well. But you left out the most hype rpg that is still flying under the radar....Sacrifire is going to be great!
I didn’t see a release window for it and thought it was delayed!
@@BacklogBattle they are still on schedule to release in 2023 with a backerkit to be announced soon
I don't think Nayuta is coming in the spring. It's likely going to be in the Fall.
It’s starting to get to a point where I have to write down the names and release dates.
Waiting on Grandblue Fantasy Relink
It’s been on so many yearly lists!
I wasn't a big fan of the FF7 remake. Since it was Midgar only, the best parts of the original, like Fort Condor and the Golden Saucer were left out. Hopefully the next one fixes this.
I am really only looking forward to sea of stars...
...Because my pc can't run most of these games lol
But if it could it would still be the game I am expecting the most
Persona 3 is my favorite but Persona 4 and 5 are better games.
Best advice I could give a new fan is, don’t fall into the trap of fanboying over one or the other.
3/4/5 are all bangers and you will miss out if you don’t play all 3 to completion.
Still hoping for onimusha 2 onwards T_T........
I need games to just stop releasing for like five years or so so I have a chance of catching up.
