Jesus Calms the Storm
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat
and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being
swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,
we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and
all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one
another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”,
Background: When you go through this gospel, Luke is presenting Jesus as the Messiah, the
promised one to come to redeem His people. Luke points out the messianic genealogy. He had a
unique virgin birth. Jesus overcame Satan’s temptation. His ability to heal diseases. In Luke 7
Jesus raised a widow’s son who was dead. Now, Luke presents that Jesus has power over nature.
Modern history is as full of devastating storms, hurricanes, cyclones, destructive winds, and
floods. In this account, we see that Jesus has complete power over these natural forces.
The Scene: The Sea of Galilee
The sea of Galilee is the lowest freshwater lake in the world. This sea is 682 feet below sea level,
situated in a bowl-shaped valley. This sea is 14 km in width. The lake is supplied by the snow
melt that comes from Mount Hermon at 9,200 feet above sea level.
There is a problem with this lake. It is a perfectly situated lake to experience strong wind. From
the west come ocean winds over the hills of Galilee. From the north come the cold winds off the
Lebanese mountains. From the east comes the desert winds. Tempests on the lake basically
happen every day. So when the Lord chose a place to demonstrate His power over wind and
wave, He picked the best place.
