Her sister Mimi was married to Dick Farina who died in a motorcycle accident in 1966. This song was written by Joan for her sister and was sung at her wedding to her second husband.
I had the great pleasure of meeting Joan Baez i on a lonely beach morning....She was barefoot, and so was I,...She said, "I am Joan"...I said,.."I know, I am David"...we both smiled, and watched the surf awhile, I finally confessed that "Long Black Veil" was my favorite, she said, "I loved recording that song, it is my favorite too"...Decades later, she still remains my favorite lady of music.
Oh big HUGE wow! You are blessed to have met her. I've loved her since I was a little girl. I'm 61 now. She is Beautiful. Voice of an angel. Her causes, story, her beauty.. Timeless
I am old enough to remember this song was about her sister and her abusive husband.-What a voice and what a heart and what a star.-Us old ones will never forget.
I have followed Joan since the early 1960s Throughout my life I have never enjoyed any othe singer as much asi have ms. Baez. The most moving and convincing voice of the past century
es ist unwahrscheinlich eigentlich Joan Baez zu begreifen - ihre Stimme ist mehr als Kult - ihr Wesen göttlich & doch ist sie ein Mensch geblieben - das ist das eigentlich faszinierende ...
I agree - a beautiful song! Made me cry the first time I heard it. I think, that it is about Mimi and her second husband, Milan Melvin - the sadness of those 'years that numbered three' are the years after Richard's death. When I first heard this song I was so sad that there didn't seem to be enough of this sort of romance in the world. Then I read that Mimi and Milan divorced after a couple of years. Now I just don't know. Still a great song!
¡¡¡¡saludos desde chile, inolbidable artista ,al igual que PETE SEGERS,VICTOR JARA,VIOLETA PARRA,ETC,,,,GRAN JOAN BAEZ,,,,DESDE ACA TE RECORDAMOS TU SOLIDARIDAD CON NUESTRO PAIS EN TIEMPOS DE TERROR Y DICTADURA MILITAR,,,,gracias JOAN BAEZ.
Good old times, creative, OWN made and self performed in a most beautiful way...that is purity and all what is music about...........at that time the music was from the performer -hand made-......today it comes from the listener (public)..What a losssssssssss!
It`s too easy to forget a legendary singer like Miss Baez. A human being that was there at the very beginnings of the 60`s counter culture with that perfect pitch voice...a counter culture that appears to be wakening once more. Come out and lead us Joan, make us once again aware that peace brings greater rewards than war.
i just love this song and the wonderful Joan Baez. Such a beautiful voice. Happened upon this song when searching for something else and memories of 30yrs + ago flooded back - thanks Joan.
Will there every be another like her? Written back in the day when she could say "Sweet Sir Galahad went down, with his gay bride of flowers", and mean what the word should mean, joyful and delighted.....
Beautiful song and magnificent finger-picking by Joannie. I love the version she did at Woodstock (from the Woodstock 2 vinyl - I'm showing my age!). It was Joannie alone w/o side musicians.
This beautiful, talented lady, with the voice of an angel epitomised the 60s, the hopes and aspirations of the generation that was going to change the world, by song! Where we unrealistic, I don't think so. You had to live in those "heady days" She was of her time, " La Passionaria" of the 60s ( I have forgot a lot of my Spanish over the years) but like legions of other people I am still in love with her!!!! Gracias por tu vida Joan Jimmy, UK
Joan, It's been over 40 years and you still are #1 on my list of folk heroes of the 60's. You led us through some very turbulent times. Inspiration flowed from your songs and from your actions. I am truly a better person for my life long journey with Joan Baez.
Flawless rendition. Just like the studio recording. With such skill as a song writer, I feel like we've all missed out on more of her writing. Her catalogue is mostly traditional tunes, and it is good though she kept a lot of those from obscurity. How would you like Joan to compose YOUR wedding song? Such a privilege!
Sweet memory: Remember hearing this song inside my head all midsummer of 1969, riding very fast on an mc, longing for someone, feeling I was in the wrong place....
Joan is an angel. Her voice is pure soul, so soft, so immaculated, so deep. Love her. She seems a bit sad in this video, anyone knows why? peace for all of us!
My favourite Joan Baez song and love many more on the LPs I still have from the 60s. Her voice is so clear and beautiful and this song always bring tears to my eyes xx
I met Richard and Mimi last in 1965 at Stonehenge Coffee House in Ipswich MA." where I was performing. We chatted for about five minutes and then that following year Richard left this world forever. You just never know so cherish each moment.
Dear Joannie, you and Jeffrey were such an instrumental part of my and my twin sister's life back in the sixties when my father would take us to your home on Struggle Mountain. Till this day, decades later, there will only be one Joan Baez. The sixties were a once in a lifetime experience. Sending my love to you and Jeffrey, always, Steve's twin daughters. With Metta
It is remarkable how forever fresh and vibrant is this spectacular talent. A mountain of inspiration and creative genius. An oasis of good things. I remember her at Woodstock, her crystalline voice flashing through the night.
This clip is from 1969, around the same time her husband, David Harris, went to prison as a conscientious objector. Perhaps that is the reason for her sadness.
it's actually a very sad song about her brother in law who died on her sister Mimi's 21st birthday - Richard Farina. They were married for three years and Mimi was devastated after he died. She died decades later from cancer.
Such a beautiful song and so, so sad that was written about Joan's brother-in-law, Richard Farina who Mimi (Joan's younger sister) was married to. Sadly, Richard Farina died in a motorcylce accident after leaving a celebration party for his new book in April 1966 in Carmel. California. Sadly, Mimi Farina Baez passed away in July 2001 at the age of 56.... from a form of cancer. This song always brings tears to my eyes... such heartfelt song.
One of my favourites by her, and was astonished to hear that somewhere she called this a 'funny little song' whereas I find it positively lyrical, and sentimental, and anything but funny.

I feel like if you were to meet Joan Baez anywhere it would be barefoot on a beach
Beautiful Woman , beautiful face , beautiful voice and music . Thank you . 💚💛💚
I am old enough to remember this song was about her sister and her abusive husband.-What a voice and what a heart and what a star.-Us old ones will never forget.
Yes. Indeed. I heard that she wrote this song for her sister. Joan sang it on the Simon and Garfunkle show.
Many many years ago. BEAUTIFUL!
I have followed Joan since the early 1960s Throughout my life I have never enjoyed any othe singer as much asi have ms. Baez. The most moving and convincing voice of the past century
即便是聽不懂言語的有些人,就閉起眼睛聆聽那韻律,也深受那幽靜中深蘊含著的情深愛滋,而深沉的緬懷曾經的愛!!
The more I listen to this woman the more I fall in love with her. Her songs are too beautiful for words...
Awww
On of the most beautiful songs ever! Can you imagine how her brother-in-law must have felt after hearing this!
he was dead
@Patrick Easterling no its about Mimi's second husband Milan Melvin not Richard Fariña.
Thank you Joan for your contribution to American Music history, and for being an all-around wonderful person/musician.
es ist unwahrscheinlich eigentlich Joan Baez zu begreifen - ihre Stimme ist mehr als Kult - ihr Wesen göttlich & doch ist sie ein Mensch geblieben - das ist das eigentlich faszinierende ...
Joan's 'Sweet Sir Galahad' and Emmylou's 'Boulder to Birmingham'...two of the most beautiful and bittersweet songs of my lifetime. Brava, Joan!

I had forgotten how good the singers of my youth really were.
And they are mostly still alive and doing it!
so descriptive, the imagery in her songs make you feel like you floated to a cloud, and kissed heaven...awesome

Each time I hear this song I'm deeply moved. Joan is the most adorable singer.
Simply put the voice of an angel.I still love this woman.

How could any one possibly dislike this--or indeed anything--that Joan Baez did or does?
It is remarkable how forever fresh and vibrant is this spectacular talent. A mountain of inspiration and creative genius. An oasis of good things. I remember her at Woodstock, her crystalline voice flashing through the night.
This song is truly beautiful.
This clip is from 1969, around the same time her husband, David Harris, went to prison as a conscientious objector. Perhaps that is the reason for her sadness.
yes, this voice is from heaven, and it is from an angel, and the massage is: peace over the world
this is such a cute and happy song about love!
it's actually a very sad song about her brother in law who died on her sister Mimi's 21st birthday - Richard Farina. They were married for three years and Mimi was devastated after he died. She died decades later from cancer.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard--and some of the words connect with me so personally, I can hardly listen to it without crying.
she looks really good
Saw her 2 3 years ago .unbelevable
Such a beautiful song and so, so sad that was written about Joan's brother-in-law, Richard Farina who Mimi (Joan's younger sister) was married to. Sadly, Richard Farina died in a motorcylce accident after leaving a celebration party for his new book in April 1966 in Carmel. California. One of my favourites by her, and was astonished to hear that
somewhere she called this a 'funny little song' whereas I find it positively lyrical, and sentimental, and anything but funny.
Young Joan was stunning looking and sounding. ....A kind of angel come to Earth... Her dad, btw, was a physics teacher.
She looks beautiful
