I made the Vintage bargain of the century last year.
I went to a local music store and found a one owner Made in Japan Epiphone FT150 BARD Dreadnought.
As soon as I played it, I realized, that guitar had so much more warmth and character than the new ones around it.
Even tho the neck is bolt on, It has crazy sustain.
It was 250 Euros with a Case.
I bought it instantly. Now I see they go for double or even trice as much. In worse condition
Its brazillian Rosewood. Mahagoni etc. You can't even buy the Materials these days for the money.
My Luthier checked it and he said the neck is as straight as it can be and he believes it had to be a living room guitar because for nearly 50 years of age, it looks nearly perfect.

Also, I was told not to intonate a guitar on a neck support, do it holding the guitar in playing position. He showed me with a strobe tuner that it goes flat on the stand.

Years ago I got an Ibanez FA-100 for about $700. I had it for a year or two and one day brought it over my neighbor's house. He is a really good jazz player and he has a Gibson ES-175. He compared the two and really liked it....the Ibanez was a touch brighter but all in all he called it the same. I decided to sell it, as I was overloaded with guitars and I managed to sell it for $1600. I wish I still had it. Thanks for your video and a really beautiful guitar!!

It is amazing to me how so many humbucker guitars sound the same. They are so close in tone it makes me think that there is no reason to own more than one guitar with humbuckers. Sure there are the high output pickups that have that extra click of the pick on the strings, but the PAF style pickups are practically the same. I couldn't tell the difference between this guitar and his SG on the neck pickup.

in 1973 I was taking jazz guitar lessons from a teacher who now leads the Hot Club of Philadelphia. I had a Ric 330, he said you can't play jazz on that thing, so off I went to find a used ES-175. Man hard to find. I did find first a new Ibanez copy in blonde like this, but already being a guitar snob I kept looking. Eventually I did find a 67 175 at Zaphs music that I still have. That said I regret not buying the Ibanez and still think about it.

It came with a Gibson humbucker in the bridge and the original Super 70 in the neck. I swapped out the Super 70 for a Seymour Duncan. The nut was cut perfectly and the action is just to my liking. TWO things. I am so glad to see any Ibanez Jazz box. My fancy one is an Ibanez AGS73FM VLS (fm == Flame Maple VLS == Violin Stripe) So while it is 3/4/ to 1" less deep than the big jazz boxes it is definitely more jazz the RnR\Rockabilly
And second you didn't go directly to VERY overdriven sound it does that very good as well but the natural power\brightness in the bridge really does cut into the mix. Especially for Neo-Soul, Funk and Ska. Literally just using a Wah, eq and Compressor for this guitar (Named Beatrice - - bringer of smiles\good news)

When I was 10 years old my father bought me a 1970s? Black Kent Les Paul for xmas of 1980 off his friend who was a studio musician.
It was a beautiful guitar and it meant so much to me.
When I was 15, my band played a show at our school gym,
.. someone stole it from a friend's truck while we were inside talking to some "fans" 😞
To this day I believe it was a setup (these "fans" wanting to talk to us/distract us) and I also believe it was someone we/I knew.. because it was the only item taken.
Never able to prove anything and never got it back.. and the pain, heartache of having to tell my father..
When he passed in 2019 it's all I could think about.

Great breakdown on why you do not have to go big on expense to get something that fills the need. Bought a 1977 Ibanez 2341 triple pickup black beauty in the early 80’s for $165 with the Super 70’s and almost just as important the star tuners. Never had a better Les Paul and I have tried many. Still rocks and now has the relic mojo some are paying way too much for, do it yourself by using it. Again nice job!

I purchased one of those in Natural when I was stationed in Japan back in 1980. A beautiful guitar. I paid around $300 for it back then. Loaded with flat wounds perfect for Jazz. In Japan back in those days they referred to jazz arch-tops as "four beat guitars". Wish I still had it today. Another popular Japanese "lawsuit" guitar brand was Greco. Greco made an unbelievable Gibson Byrdland copy much like one of those that Ted Nugent uses (can't stand him by the way) which I also owned. Yep back in those days I couldn't afford the real thing but these copies fit the bill.

That thing is killer. I think you also got pretty lucky with one so pristine. Not saying GC would try to sell you junk, but I would be pretty surprised if the majority of examples of even this exact guitar would need so few issues tended to. I feel like most hollow bodies of that vintage would be susceptible to twisted or bowed necks, cracks in the finish or body, loose or damaged binding, grooved frets, or boogered wiring. Your mileage may vary, but I'd be cautious not to expect this almost perfect result if you're looking to buy a similar instrument.

  • @oldguy3255
    @oldguy3255 4 дні тому +1

$1400 for that guitar is a good price. The ES-135's were in their time an affordable professional grade instrument. I bought a $250 Guitar Fetish Asian (almost) copy of a 135 eight or nine years ago. The neck was straight (not twisted) and I did not get splinters from the fretboard so I corrected the stuff that's usually done at a legitimate factory's QA, leveled and polished the frets, replaced bridge, tailpiece and pickups and set it up. It turned out very nicely. Not as nice as the Ibanez of course but a very playable instrument.

Phil, you've tapped into my style of finding and acquiring cool old guitars. Some of my favorites are under $500 and, with one exception, I've never spent over $1000 for a guitar (just recently), since 1973. If this proves popular, you could really help us out by deep diving some Reverb listings and teaching us what to look for. I've taken some hard knocks getting here but I'm improving my results and avoiding other problems too. Neck problems on acoustics are the worst and most costly. Bridge and frets next. Plus cracks.

I own a 1978-79 Ibanez copy of a Les Paul. And it is such a Great Guitar! I have never seen or played an actual Gibson Les Paul that has the kind of Quality of this Ibanez.
These late 70's upper End Ibanez Guitars are superior instruments.

I love seeing the vintage (and some modern) Japanese made guitars getting the acknowledgement they deserve for being great instruments in their own right. Copies or not. Thankfully they're still relatively affordable. But, the prices won't stay that way forever.
Kudos to you, Phil. This is a well done video and I appreciate your pointing out some of the things to be mindful of when purchasing an older/vintage guitar.

I have a Yamaha 1966 Es 175 copy, I have owned it since 1979 I think! The finish is all crackled up but she’s still plays great!

I have a collection of Gibson and D’Aquisto copies white labeled and built at the Peerless factory. They are GORGEOUS guitars.

Nice guitar, it's good that You made a review on it, but an Ibenez from the 70`s is already a vintage? Are we that old? :D I remember when I started my journey with guitars in the 90`s these instruments were the first affordable steps to sound like a pro. I still have my 1986 Ibanez acoustic that I`ve started with, still playing it from time to time. I also have 1962 Framus Fret Jet, kind of a Gretch/Gibson Es330 like guitar made in Germany by Czech luthiers, man, those craftsmen knew what the are doing, low action, no buzz, super clear pickups and a bigsby-like tremolo that works better than the original. That guitar can do everything from jazz to metal..

The DC resistance of the coil wire of pickups varies quite a lot according to the temperature of the coil.

yep, and if you swap magnets it stays the same 😅 but he sound changes a lot. People get really too much into the readings.

Also maybe they later don't play with the height setup or pole height.

Glad you changed it up and added a vintage/used guitar to the deep dives! I’ve been buying used for years now and find you can get mint guitars for a fraction of the price of a new guitar. As we all know, unless it’s a Gibson or PRS, a new guitar loses its value ‘right when you drive it off the lot’. To anyone who says anything about “not having a warranty” when you buy used A. You don’t need it B. If you get good enough deal guitar center pro coverage covers everything - If not more - for way less (assuming you got a deal).

Use are using the wrong type of DeoxIT. You want to use DeoxIT Fader F5, which cleans and also contains a lube for potentiometers.

FWIW, you can do the pot-cleaning thing with a short hunk of clear vinyl tubing (3/8" or 5/16" ID) from Home Depot. For essentially free. Drill a small hole in the side for the Deoxit nozzle, stick it over the shaft, and put your thumb on the open end.

You know it's not a Gibson because the headstock was attached to the rest of the guitar still. When my dad died I took ownership of his can of contact cleaner, I doubt I will use it all.
