The Gnolls being a combo between Gnomes and Trolls can be traced back to B/X D&D. The Wicca/Shaman thing is directly from the Mentzer BECMI sets.

We just ignored the humor pretty much entirely. But mostly I just use this to create higher level humanoids as NPCs. Allows you to have humanoid foes for higher level PCs that they have to take seriously.
