Free heat from sawdust Briquettes - press upgrade - Over 10k made

- I've made over 10,000 of these great briquettes or 'dust blocks' from my workshop waste. I then take them home and burn on my Log burner / stove.
In this video I sort out the water 'run off' by making a block of wood under the back feet. And also onto the next flaw in the design.
I use dust and shaving from machine tools, sanders, saws etc. But, I also throw in tea bags, used coffee grinds and the coffee from those little pods too.
At a quick speed I can make 30 blocks in 30 minutes. What others don't share is the best way to dry them. I only handle them the one time before they dry. This saves time and money.
And there's the fact that I don't have to take my waste to a waste site. I even give my ashes from our log burner to a Potter who filters it down and uses it as an early period glaze on his pottery artworks.
If you want to see these blocks burn in real time to show just how they start and burn through. • Briquette burning - wo...

How many of these do you think you make in a year? I've been using my shavings for the chickens and my composting toilet, but haven't produced as much lately.
I know one year I made about 1800 I think it was. I'd got loads of Iroko shavings that needed to be cleared. Probably a few less this year but I'm over the 10k mark now. It's all in my notes with students. Some weeks we would made 70 in a 2.5 hour period. 20 per week would be 1000 per year. I make 30 some weeks and some I might not make any due to no shavings 👍. @@twcmaker They give out much heat compared to a log? Hard to quantify I know! But say compare it to solid wood the same size?
I'd say (even though they are dry to 8% mc after 6-7 weeks) they give off the heat of a small 2" round log.

Either change the "stroke" angle a little bit and use a longer leverage
Or a bottle jack
This will remove more water, and compress more
Ooo that's an old school way now. In my latest videos I'm allowing to drain freely. Not too much compression leaves very fine dust particles inside the briquettes. I'm also allowing the mix to 'compost' or decompose. Either way, they are heavier and burn 4 times longer.

Hi where can i buy a press like the one in video..also is it just water you use to bind the dust together..thanks for video
Hi Mark.
The press is a multimate press. Google it. They've made a lot of money out of my videos and I have to say given me £20 through Buy me a coffee. Not the most generous, but hey-ho.
The press I recently saw was not as good as this 10year old press. They've cut a few corners or made easier to manufacture. So look carefully at it.
I've done a whole playlist on Briquettes. Well worth a look because I've changed a lot since this video. I now compost the mixture with Coffee grounds and they burn for over 2hours.

What kind of a press is that? Brand name etc.
It's a multimate press.
@@twcmaker thanks
@gabet945 I'm going to say, they are not as good as they were 10 years ago. They cut a few corners to ease labour I think. A friend bought one last year and it's just not as good. I feel I've got to tell you that as I would be really disappointed with the purchase these days.

Thoughts: Good idea, whatever makes it work better for you. If the legs are hollow, maybe some bits of hardwood with holes drilled through for different height settings and that slip inside. It seemed you weren't quite happy with the height you ended up with.
Looking at your wrists, maybe an improved handle with an upward bend at the end for better ergonomics.Such that the handle's grip is horizontal at the end of the stroke. I suppose a sheet-metal "funnel" to slip into the top of the form when filling would make things a bit less cumbersome along with a scoop made from a tin can with a handle...
Brian. Thank you. You're saying all the improvements that I will make at some point in the future. The handle will probably be the most awkward for me. It needs a cut or two out of the upper most face, bend up and re-weld.
The legs are fine for now 👍
Thanks for watching Brian 👍
That’s amazing love it thanks Jamie, regards Darren
Thanks Darren. I mention you in next Sundays video. Your channel and woodland inspires me. Thank you. 👍
@@twcmaker thank you mate that’s incredibly kind. New wood log out this eve too
Great I'll watch it before bed 👍👍👍
I enjoyed your latest vlog. Love the fence repair 👍 and your course👍
Nice sharp drill bits 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Thanks Pat. That 1.5" flatbit has hardly been used.

Is there any better presses out there? or do you think this is better?
I don't know of any other press in this price range. Cheaper ones wouldn't have lasted the 10 years I've has this one.
@@twcmaker thanks, I wanna get Into making my own logs, as I have been looking at getting a canal boat and will have a multi fuel stove, and I wouldn't mind doing this for some extra heat or logs.
Latest method of mine is here. ua-cam.com/video/8aNkC_fhObM/v-deo.html
Part composted makes a huge difference. Burn for 2.5 hours +
@@twcmaker thanks will have a look, also found one press that dose 4 or 5 at at a time you may of seen it before, do you think that is worthwhile?
Storage on your boat will be an issue. How big is the press and where will you store it.
Plus where will you dry out the briquettes?
Then where will the the dry briquettes be stored? It's a completly different way to look at it. Think it through before you spend any money.
just looking at the design of the press, would it be possible to add a chain and treadle for more pressure or if anyone has shoulder/neck issues
With a shackle on the end of the handle. Welded in 👍 chain and footrest. It could work. Actually just a longer handle would make it easier with less pressure 👍
Or a bottle jack (car)

how much coffee do you mix with sawdust?
Any amount up to about 70% is good. After that the blocks don't lift out of the press properly and break up. Thanks for watching 👍 I'll be making another in November about the coffee ingredients 👍 Hit the Subscribe button to ensure you see it. Thank you. Jamie
