How to Make Guyanese Fried Goja | Coconut Turnovers

  • In this video, Mike from TeamHira Adventures will be showing you how he prepares and cooks crispy, delicious Goja (Fried Coconut Turnovers).
    Goja Recipe
    Dough Ingredients:
    - 3 Cup Flour
    - 1 Tsp. Baking Powder
    - 2 Tsp. Sugar
    - 1 Tbsp. Crisco Vegetable Shortening
    - 1/2 Tsp. Cinnamon
    - 1 Glass of Cold Milk
    - 1/2 Tsp. Turmeric (Optional)
    Mix the Goja Dough Ingredients and kneed
    Base the Dough with Olive Oil. Rest Dough for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour.
    Goja Filling Ingrediants:
    - 2 Dry, Grated Coconut
    - 1 Tsp. Nutmeg Spice
    - 1 Tsp. Vanilla
    - 1 Tsp. Cinnamon
    - 3 Quarter Cup Brown Sugar
    - Red Food Coloring
    - 2 Tbsp. Fresh Grated Ginger
    Cook the filling
    1. In a frying pan or wok, add the freshly grated coconut filling.
    2. Add the fresh grated ginger
    3. Add the rest of Goja Ingredient's (Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Vanilla, Brown Sugar)
    Add more sugar if you like...
    4. Add red food coloring
    If your filling is a bit dry, add some milk.
    Rolling out the Dough
    1. Separate the dough into equal parts
    2. Roll one of the dough ball
    3. Add some of the Red Goja Filling in the center
    5. Fold the dough in half
    4. Use a little water around the edges to seal the dough
    5. Using a fork, seal the edges of the dough
    Fry the Goja
    1. Medium Heat (I use Olio Villa: Blended Pomace Oil)
    2. Fry until brown and crispy
