***UPDATE*** For a full explanation of the last couple sentences of the video, please read the explanatory article linked here: neuroscientificallychallenged.com/on-the-effectiveness-of-antidepressants Please note that with the last 2 sentences of this video I’m not making a claim that SSRIs don’t work. Instead, I’m pointing out that some research has questioned their effectiveness, especially in certain individuals (like those who suffer from milder cases of depression). It’s not a statement of opinion that this type of evidence exists---it’s a fact that multiple studies have failed to find a large clinical benefit to antidepressants over placebos, at least in some groups (I’ll include links to several studies below). I was trying to provide a more complete picture by mentioning this research. I was not, however, trying to make any statements one way or another about the effectiveness of antidepressants. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that they do work better than placebos (e.g., pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29477251/), but the area is somewhat controversial. Plenty of people, however, benefit significantly from the drugs, and I am not trying to deter anyone from taking them or trying to convince you they will not work. More research will probably provide us with a better picture of who stands to benefit the most from taking an antidepressant. Again, please read this article if you want the full story: neuroscientificallychallenged.com/on-the-effectiveness-of-antidepressants Some studies that question the effectiveness of antidepressants are linked below. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3712503/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2253608/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5299662/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15110490 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14974002
Hi. In regards to ssri, do they in theory, can also induce hallucination if it used excessively? As LSD also technically also touch the same serotonin receptor right?
@@nickjohn2051 Hi Nick, it's a good question since you have the action of LSD in mind. Hallucinations aren't common with SSRIs, though. Drugs that influence the serotonin system can have disparate effects depending on various factors like what subtype of the serotonin receptor they are likely to affect (there are at least 14 different subtypes).
@Noel Carvajal Overdose on SSRIs alone is rare. It takes a very large dose (greater than 75 times the daily dose) to get into a range that would be likely to cause a serious adverse event, and even then fatalities involving SSRIs almost always involve other substances as well. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9786310
I started lexapro around 2 and half months ago. honest to god the best decision I have ever made. my anxiety was debiitating and I just couldn't control it anymore. it took me 7 Years to finally give it a shot.
I just started lexapro for my anxiety, took my first dose last night, it made me sleepy as hell within an hour of taking it. I am going to continue taking it for a month to see if it helps
Abdur-rahman Moustapha y are u so hesitant to take? i tell u once u take it never quit Cold turkey after u feel ok. you will regret the cons if you abruptly quit. stick to the plan take it as prescribed but always feel your bodys reaction. first few weeks carefuly watch for bad side efects make a journal with it
To anyone who ever sees this. When I started anti depressants 7 years ago, it was an SSRI. I was one of the people who noticed a change within an hour. I went from an immense TERRIBLE depression, to finally having clearer thoughts that weren’t about death and hopelessness. Please don’t discount medication. It is often the right catalyst you need.
You can take them that long? I always heard they were a short term solution which is why I didn’t understand why they get prescribed for long term issues.
@@robertl955 while taking this med eat foods that creat serotonin, SALMON, all kind of nuts, tea, green Veges, fruits .... that's what I am doing I feel improvement somehow.
Sometimes it doesn't take that long to feel the effects. I went from really low, dissociative, irritable to neutral, present, and not irritable within about two hours. Its day four for me and I genuinely can not believe the difference. I can't believe I didn't start earlier. And a reminder: taking antidepressants for depression etc is just like taking Panadol for pain or wearing a cast for a broken bone. It's normal.
Exactly! It's also the same as a diabetic taking insulin. I'm so happy for you that you found relief. SSRIs made life worth living ..and with a smile on my face!!!
for me it took me about 10 years to finally start taking medication for my anxiety disorder, right before i started my anxiety was so bad that it effectively crippled me from doing anything at all and i was basically in hell. glad i gave lexapro a shot because i'm way better now.
One of the few times where going down to the comments section was actually a good idea. I'm finally looking into antidepressants for long term mild depression after 5+ years, and the ending statement about "SSRIs might only work well for people with extreme cases" had me really worried, since I've never experienced total anhedonia or su1c1dal thoughts due to depression.
if you ignore it longer you might get there. I suffered from anxiety too long without acknowledging, all I knew I had physical symptoms. and now mild depression and first time in my life thought about life worth not living. Not to do it, but did think about life is not worth living. I was very worried about medications. And I think still a bit, due to the stigma. Started on one two days ago. But if I have to tell someone else I would encourage them to talk to their doctors about this. Don't listen to a youtube video about this. If life is constantly a struggle 24/7, that is not normal and you can seek help.It does not have to be so called "severe". That could mean different for everybody. I always thought I wasn't severe cause I could get out of bed, but still, I couldn't get things done the way I wanted or knew I could if I am well, or if I could it would be a huge struggle. I hope you got help!
I just wanted to give a word of encouragement to anyone thinking of starting this journey. It helped me massively and allowed to live a normal life, even have the strength to actually use other tools such as therapy that I would otherwise have no energy to do. Please don’t turn it down just because it’s a medication as it can turn your life around very positively
I never realized I needed SSRIs until I finally said "f*** it" and took it. And for those who are afraid of the "why didn't I take this sooner" thoughts, (like I was), they don't really have any effect at all. In fact any negative thoughts you just stop believing because you see them for what they are, useless thoughts. You made them yourself, but you can easily destroy them. And this also goes for positive thoughts as well. And suddenly you really end up realizing YOU. ARE. IN. CONTROL. You can choose what you want to believe or not. That's my experience so far when I started taking SSRIs.
I think your last comment about the placebo effect really does a disservice to these life saving drugs!! And it also turns away people who may be interested in taking them. They are powerful, amazing and life changing for many, many people.
You have no idea how much this video helped me, My doctor was not well at explaining and have no been able to find anything that explained easy as this.thank you
I always had insane anxiety growing up. Didn't even know what it was called, I just always had stomach aches and sweaty palms. When I started taking Zoloft, it took a month or so like they said, but I have never felt this great in my life. I wish I started taking them during high school.
I’ve been taking Zoloft for about 5 years and I would not still be here without it. I had depression, and sever social anxiety, I could barely leave my house, I’m not 100% cured or anything it takes a lot more work then just going on medication to heal but without medication I wasn’t able to even begin getting better
@@bekb293 yeah that’s a pretty common side effect for most antidepressants, my doctor told me if it make me feel tired to take it in the evening instead of the morning time
@Harry McNamara They might have, most people do speak to their doctor but might also just want to hear other peoples experiences, and idk where you live but most people have to pay a lot to chat to a doctor for 5 minutes. Also it’s not uncommon for doctors not to run through every single possible side effect, especially with antidepressants because there’s so many. Maybe be nicer to someone who has said they’ve just had to start taking antidepressants x
I started off with 10 mg of Prozac and maybe it was a placebo effect but that first week I noticed immediately an increase in being present at work with little anxiety. Before Prozac, I had a lot of stuff going on in my life that it affected my memory especially at work where I’d end up getting in trouble for not following instructions. After i started taking it, I felt more prideful in my work, I wasn’t in my head to the point where I finally started to relax, I became funnier because I was in the moment and didn’t care about my responses, I became more optimistic with my coworkers and even started calling out shots and being more involved. Tbh I honestly tripped out on how debilitating my anxiety was until I started with Prozac and it hasn’t been a full month yet of being on it
Prozac ( fluoxitine) has helped significantly for my depression/ anxiety. But be aware that after some time you may "plateau" on it. A point where it becomes ineffective. Talk to your shrink right away if that happens. A PSYCHIATRIST NOT a psychologist. A change in dosage or type of meds may be required. Also sunlight, natural light in the house helps a lot. Diet, eggs, salmon, B complex vitamins, green tea, red ginsing, omega 3,6,and 9 oil capsules also help. (Nature Made at Costco.) It's extremely difficult for people who've never experienced depression/ anxiety to understand what you're experiencing. And a lot of them think they do.
Depressed tea sommelier here to second Green Tea! Look for shade-grown green teas specifically because they are higher in L-Theanine, the chemical in green tea that is good for depression. As always, this is just to supplement other medical and lifestyle choices, please consult a medical professional about other ways to bolster your treatment
SSRI worked great for me. My problem was more along the lines of obsessive thoughts and control of my anger. What a relief! The drug made me super sleepy for about a week. I had no doubt something was changing in my brain! If I miss a few days I get some really odd sensations in my head too.
@@Justlivingdaytoday I’ve been off the SSRI for about a year now. I slowly began having various health issues over the years that mimicked hypothyroidism. I was on an abnormally high dose of Synthroid that gave me some relief, but that wasn’t sustainable. I began taking methyl folate and methyl B12 about 18 months ago and all my negative symptoms have disappeared. I haven’t taken any prescription meds in about a year and feeling better than ever!
@@ElectricDanielBoone thank you for responding even though it's been 2 years ! So are you saying you replaced prescriptions with those supplements you listed and those negative symptoms are gone ??
@ it took quite a while to figure it all out. First clue was when I started taking methyl folate/B12 and it exaggerated the effects of the SSRI I was taking. I slowly backed off the SSRI and was feeling good, then I slowly backed off the Synthroid too. My last TSH test was normal. I was taking that SSRI for over 15 years, which was probably too long for me. I actually feel much better now than when I was much younger.
When my life was much harder in my teens (I was Sui side hall from 12-18) there were a lot of traumatic events like homelessness, losing friends to sui side, unsafe people- in and out over time. When I was doing better financially in a safe place w good nutritious food- the ptsd would make it very hard to concentrate on school or life tasks. It took me a long time to figure out the right antidepressant but once I did I felt: way more capable, able to put down intrusive thoughts, more energetic and optimistic. I was afraid of dependence, but as it turns out in the years I was taking it it open my tolerance threshold enough to learn healthy coping mechanisms and restructure abs replace my thought patterns. So, instead of defaulting to self loathing narratives when upset I had a roster of assuring statements I'd built for myself. So when im off anti depressants now I have much better mental health in general to the person I was before taking them. I still go on and off (not frequently) and check with myself after a year or two if I'm in a place where I feel I need them or could benefit. If I think I'm doing fine I try out being unmedicated. Sometimes I'm able to do it for years at a time. I think as I grow up (I'm in my early adulthood, mid 20s) I won't use it as much in the future, and that progresses can't be taken away in my opinion. If I do continue meds again later on, I won't be ashamed for that. It's genuinely helpful in times of longer crisis for me.
I've been on SSRIs for a couple of years now. I got them prescribed due to severe insomnia (I couldn't fall asleep at all for many days in a row during most weeks). We tried everything else but nothing worked so as a last resort we decided to try medication to see if it helped and if my sleep disorder was caused by anxiety and/or depression. Well the meds worked! I can honestly say I wouldn't be here if I hadn't started taking them.
Hi, I recently started SSRI's, and I see that you been using SSRI medication for years now. Have you experienced any changes in your mood/feelings? like to you feel a bit numb or emotionless? also do you feel sexually dysfunctional?
Imagine saying this: "The new cancer drug's effectiveness has been questioned because it only seems to treat the worst forms of cancer." Instead you might say: "HOORAY!! IT TREATS THE WORST CASES OF DEPRESSION!!"
It's not a solution though it's just a temporary remedy. We have new class of treatment coming up for depression and mental health by treating gut microbiome called pyschobiotocs as most of your serotonin is manufactured about 90 percent in gut
I recently restarted my anti-depressants & the difference is night and day. Diff in mood and energy is much better. My mind feels quiet & content. I don’t want to constantly just lay down. I’m very grateful for my meds. I’m always better when I’m on my meds.
Addiction is a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, activity, or substance, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm.
@Harry McNamara blasting your brain with serotonin isn't harmless last I checked. Increased suicide rate in people aged less than 26 for example. case reports of permanent sexual dysfunction after quitting. Increased divorce rate. Hostility. Increased risk of committing crimes, the list goes on. Source: nih
Did you have gut issues before?anything prolonged gastritis, bloating or constipation or any other gastrointestinal disorder for a significant time before you got anxiety?
I’ve always been someone who’s been “anti” antidepressants. mostly stubborn about it. not wanting to “rely on medicine” to feel okay. but after trying everything to help with my mood.. going to therapy, changing my diet, getting outside, getting exercise, *trying* getting good sleep.. nothing was shaking my spiraling, negative, thought loops. i mean, all if those things have definitely been great for my health overall. But the anxiety and shit mood was still there. My Dr suggested I try Zoloft, and at that point i was willing to give anything else a shot. and so far it’s been SO helpful with managing my emotions.. and those spiraling thoughts.. even if it may be placebo.. atleast it’s HELPING. along with therapy, too
I just called my doctor now. I think it’s time. He had me on Wellbutrin and something else. I was falling asleep while driving. I just stopped taking them(and I told him I stopped) and every month when he calls to check on me I just play the usual “I’m great” card. But I’m not “great” The depression is still there It’s not intense. I’m good at “hiding” it But I’m not my same self. I mope around and have no motivation. Constantly criticizing myself throughout the day. I need help. I hope he can figure out what I need. My mom says lexapro helped her. Maybe it’ll help me. Idk
Geezus, are you my clone??? Like, this is me. All of it! You PERFECTLY captured everything I've thought and been through. But I'm trying Prozac...and starting on a very very low dose....here's hoping it'll work :) Glad you found the right ticket for you!
I have been taking an SSRI for the last 18 years or so. I’m 28. I don’t remember how I felt when I started taking it, but what I can tell you is that if I miss even a day or two I will notice.
Just started taking citalopram and can feel a difference. I’m not thinking to deep about negative things but I want something to help with my fatigue as well
Great video on the current hypothesized mechanism of SSRI! This is the only video I FOUND that goes beyond the old hypothesis of increase serotonin in synapse is what leads to treat depression and anxiety. Thank you!
You're welcome! Yes, this process is over-simplified too often and the available evidence doesn't provide strong support for the old serotonin=happiness perspective.
I worked full time as an ICU nurse for 9 years and I think it damaged my nerves. I might have had a breakdown. Everything was just too much. Went on Prozac 40mg. daily and after about 3 weeks it all just lifted to a manageable level. Made me feel normal and able to cope, like a balm on my nerves.
My experiences with an SSRI: Mental fog; bad decisions; poor motivation; low confidence; severe indifference; etc. I weaned off, and my life began to take a positive turn. Not all brains respond the same, though.
Same, I stopped taking it but the symptoms remain. Idk what to do now. I only took it for ocd, but it seems that it also gave me depression now. I only took it for 3 days (50mg). And it’s been more than a week since I stopped. Will update later.
@@Jules262 it didn't get better in a month, and I kind of intuitively ended up starting it again. The symptoms disappeared immediately and I felt amazing for a week, but now it's kind of back and forth. I hope it gets better.
1:13 He contradicts himself saying it normally has to take 4 weeks but then says it only takes about an hour normally which would increase mood. Only to further contradict himself saying increase better mood what caused further depression and not increase better mood.
Great video! And, I think you're on point about SSRIs. For those that are considering taking SSRIs for social anxiety disorder (SAD), they may not work for you. Studies have shown that many with SAD have fairly high serotonin levels. Some of those with SAD may also have lower than normal serotonin reuptake. So, taking SSRIs to reduce reuptake when reuptake is already low can make things worse for you. My guess is that there are multiple mechanisms for SAD, and a subset of those with SAD may find improvement through use of SSRIs, and another subset of those with SAD will find SSRIs ineffective for treating their social anxiety.
@@neurochallenged Yes, I agree. I don’t think we fully understand how SSRIs work. First, it’s known that people with SAD have fairly high serotonin levels. So, if they already have high serotonin levels, why would increasing serotonin further help with anxiety? And second, taking SSRIs, which immediately increases serotonin, does not immediately help improve anxiety. Some need to wait a month or more to see the effects. So, increasing serotonin may not be the mechanism that reduces anxiety. Regarding depression, there are likely multiple causes, some of which are helped by SSRIs and some of which are not.
I started taking Zoloft for Anxiety and it's the best I've felt in years. I've heard SSRI's seem to work better for general Anxiety disorders than they do for depression, for instance I've been biting my nails since I was 3 years old. I'm 34 and just now has it stopped due to the medication.
I've been taking lexapro and it helps with my anxiety a lot, before i started my anxiety was so severe i was having traumatic 10 hour episodes starting every morning, my only escape was sleep, but now my life is back on track. don't get me wrong it didn't completely cure my anxiety but it reduced it massively. My only complaint is that it makes me bored, but that's a better trade off for not having agonizing anxiety episodes 24/7.
ua-cam.com/video/d-N364D4Hr8/v-deo.html Hank Green explains the science way better. Please watch that video before you make any decisions. From personal experience these work, you just have to find the right one. It took 4 different SSRIs before I go on one that works for me.
I am not advising anyone of anything as I am not a Doctor.. Just sharing my experience... I had a troubled childhood.. Sexually harassed.. Physically & mentally abusive father... 7-8 years ago came to know I have Dysthymia. Always hated medication as they had side effects. 2-3 years ago learnt I always had a very bad anxiety & was suffering from PTSD. Something happened in my life in September 2021 & I just went suicidal.. bedwetting started to happen quite often. Had suicidal ideations, started having nightmares about the incident. Then I planned suicide, just went to a train track to execute it. Luckily postponed it & 3 days later I went on SSRI. Biggest & most positive change of my life ever... No bedwetting since, good night's sleep. Not having long & lengthy episodes.. not recalling my father when anything goes wrong.. one of the best decisions in my life
I’d love to see a video on why SSRIs don’t work for everybody. I tried different SSRIs for about two years without any desired effects, and had the same experience with SNRIs and tricyclics.
There are likely different reasons depending on the person. One potential explanation could be genetic. For example, there are some people with a particular genetic makeup that causes them to metabolize certain drugs very quickly (this has been established with certain antidepressants). This can cause low levels of the drug to reach the bloodstream, and thus make it less likely the drugs have any effect unless higher doses are used. But most people wouldn't know they need higher doses because they don't know their genetic makeup. One day, we may be using genetic information while prescribing, and it could make pharmacological treatments much more individualized and likely to be effective.
Just started lexapro yesterday. Immediately noticed the sexual dysfunction part of it on day 1 about 5 hours later via self stimuli. I did not need weeks to notice it interacting with my brain; it has lifted my depression and in less than 24 hours which is pretty crazy; then again I'm a small guy and fast metabolism. But, so far the anxiety is still about the same-- I know. Probably needs more time. Initially it made me tired as hell (took it around 6pm). It then kept me up until 5am not unlike tripping on something just no visuals so... if you start on SSRI's, you may wanna consider taking them in the morning; especially if depression has been leaving you with interrupted sleep as is. It kinda reminds me of an LSD come up just without it continuing to intensify or the psychedelic effects. The butterflies in the stomach feeling is identical however.
I'm so glad I saw this comment, because I can barely find any information on people's personal experiences with SSRIs/SNRIs and how they make them feel or what they feel like. I'm constantly wondering how it *feels* especially since I'm interested in starting soon. Did or do you feel like that every day?
@@madeline6221 Quit taking that at the end of that month. Have stayed off of them since. Not on any meds as of today, but I also quit drinking about 2 months later after my previous post and haven't drank since either. I didn't like being medicated on that, or feel comfortable with it period right now. Granted it was only 1 medication, but it was definitely not the right one.
@@madeline6221 It raised my anxiety super hard and I didn't like feeling that out-of-control mentally when I took that stuff; it felt like as I'd mentioned, the come-up of an acid trip ALL the time. Now lately more than ever, battling isolation, a falling out with my best friend back in February (related to me drinking and self-destructive behavior-it was my fault for putting him through that; that will take a long time I figure to re-enter his life and/or if that's a possibility I don't know; I miss him a ton now everyday; that hurts more than anything now), a really uncertain work schedule, maintaining sobriety, and the unknown of this virus situation? THIS is true hard work mentally. But, I have been able to do all of this without medication, AA meetings, or much of a quality therapist. However, I am actively seeking a better one (guy I found earlier this year was pretty useless). There's been a certain clarity to be thankful for with all this experience sans drugs of any kind. Puts a very different perspective on life. I know this is not for everyone. If you feel suicidal, then this obviously is not a good idea. And if I slip back into super dark depression, then I will re-consider it as a true last resort for survival but...man that experience was really intense for me. Going through med adjustment now with everything else might push me over the edge so I'm still opting to decline.
Police brutality gave me PTSD. Out of fear it took me a year to ask for help. It's been years, I'll go back to being shell shocked if I stop. But at least I enjoy eating, showering, and can sleep significantly better. I used to have nightmares every night but maybe only once a month now.
I recently got on an SSRI and I was wondering what was placebo and what was the meds. My depression got to the point where I was having constant anxiety attacks and it seemed to start to get better within a few days.
Your argument is very interesting and you're probably onto something but I wouldn't say SSRIs "only" work on those co-morbid with anxiety issues. It may be that SSRIs are more effective for those whose depression severity is high, which is often seen in individuals with anxiety. Diagnosing, treating and understanding individual cases of depression make blanket statements about drug treatments and their effectiveness difficult to state, although important and very helpful when backed with empirical evidence :)
I'd say an SSRI such as Lexapro is for anxiety, it helps anxiety a lot but i wouldn't say it just cures depression. When you have unbearable anxiety all the, you are most likely depressed. Thousands of people in the USA have very bad anxiety and without treatment they can end up hurting themselves and/or hurting others. Anxiety will give you irrational thoughts and different states of mind that you normally wouldn't associate with. It's easy to get carried away with a bad anxious brain.
i was depressed and suicidal for my whole life. i tried everything natural except drugs. i couldnt do it anymore and eventually tried setraline 50mg and after the first night taking it, my evil and dangerous thoughts vanished like they were never there in the first place. i couldnt believe it. it was like my mind has finally regained control after so many years of being enslaved by the negative and bad thoughts. POWER OF DRUGS!!! but really, i am so much happier now then ive ever been. i am glad to have given this medication a try and its working. after 2 weeks of taking it, i have regained my motivation for living and progressing in my life. i know drugs affect people differently and may or may not help depression/mental illness for some people but i am lucky to have it been successful in my trying this medicine. so please, if anyone else is struggling and cant find a way out, get some help and talk to a doctor and maybe this medicine can help you as well. Wish you all the best of luck. Stay strong.
I was on and off SSRIs for the last 6 years of my life, they are meant for short periods of time and spending years on them isn’t beneficial for your mental health. Please don’t expect to stay on them forever, there are much better options out there to deal with depression and anxiety long term and a pill that makes you dizzy if you don’t take it on time isn’t the answer but is a fine pit-stop.
please do not do general bogus statements like this. they are meant to be used for as long as you need them, no time limit. many people have been through therapy and all sorts of lifestyle changes and still weren't able to solve the problem. for those, SSRIs might be a permanent answer.
I used to take SSRI because of my depression, once I took it, it didn’t work and I didn’t feel anything, I guess my depression was as stronger then SSRI, how I’m still here today in 2023 is still a mystery as my depression still grows
I just started on 5 mg three days ago. My doctor ordered that I increase to 10 mg in a week. Does it help for social anxiety and overall calmness and focus ??
@@ESPN5150 Idk about focus. But this was my experience: I've been on for 4 weeks now 10mg. I took it in the evening around 6:30pm-7pm. The side effects kicked my ass for a week. Expect upset stomach, acid reflux, panic attacks, insomnia, ect... its all normal. I still have lucid dreams that give me a headache in the morning. Overall I've been eating healthy, exercising and seeing a therapist while on lexapro. Ive been much more calm and less anxious aboht driving and my irrational fears. I also suffer from ibs, and noticed a an improvement in that too. Honestly try what your doctor says and give it time. I was going to quit after 4 days because the side effects were so bad. But i dealt with them and stuck with it. This medicine really doesnt start kicking in until a good 3 weeks or more. Good luck
Is depression CAUSED by low serotonin, or is it just the way emotional unrest physically manifests itself in the brain in order to create the experience of depression? No one has answered this yet.
It isn't answered because the question is wrong. Depression is caused by a bad psycho-social environment or too high expectations in contrast of reality for example. SSRI's only surpress the frontal lobe activities so you tend to feel more okay with things, good or bad.
@@driftwood757 When we lived close to nature nobody was depressed. How do you explain that? Why would our brains suddenly become biologically "sick"? There is no chemical imbalance in a newborn child. I would argue that it is caused fully by the environment (and thus from the way you think), and you get depressed when the psycho-social surrounding clashes with your inner being. Meaning the long term stress reactions make you depressed. Well, that being said, these are the kind of things that would have caused the chemical imbalance to begin with.
@@scarecrowprowler you're preaching to the choir here. I don't disagree with you. What I'm saying is psychiatrists and the field of psychiatry still blames a simple neuro chemical imbalance on many cases of depression. And that's their solution.. meds..
@@driftwood757 not one psychiatrist worth their salt would describe depression as such a simple nuerochemical deficiency. Ssris only treat depression in 15 -30 percent of people. Think about that, these people are setting themselves up for failure, with 41 percent of ssri users claiming they are addicted, 71 percent experiencing libido and love issues, all to treat depression successfully in 15- 30 percent of people. Crazy, any other drug with a 30 percent efficacy rate would be considered a joke, yet ssris are pettled like candy.
Its been 5 years of hell and misery for me. I have tried meditating, journaling, exercising, healthy eating, therapy etc and nothing really works i cant take this anymore. I want to try meds but i have a very addictive personality and that worries me, i dont want to develop an addiction
Everybody is different, but this TED talk really changed my perspective on giving medication a chance. ua-cam.com/video/-eBUcBfkVCo/v-deo.html I'm very glad that it did.
My depression is literally ruining my life. I’m not studying as I should, I’m not applying to internships, I ended things with my boyfriend who is more than perfect and I’m crying constantly. I should’ve started taking setral a month ago but I couldn’t. I’m not sure if I’m just lazy and insecure or if I actually need to be medicated.
You are right that inhibition of SERT is quick but the clinical effect slow. The reason for the delay in clinical response can be contributed to feedback inhibition via 5HT1A receptor. Although, the rise in 5HT in synapse for a period of time desensitizes 5HT1A receptors and serotonergic activity increases.
Me too, I'm taking SSRI for OCD, specifically harm OCD and I have seen a major improvement after only a few days on the meds. I've been taking them for 1 month now and I'm way better than I was before I started the treatment.
I started taking cymbalta for nerve pain. Many years ago. Worst decision. I got mood swings within a week. They lasted until I slowly, stopped the medication. Now I deal with the pain with "opium lettuce".
I have started escitalopram 5mg. It's 5th day. The problem was 24/7 overthinking and brain fog. The medications have helped me dealing overthinking quite well but almost no improvement in brain fog.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering which is the best SSRI medication in 2023? Or maybe the one with the least side effects ? Or the most popular ? Thanks
I also just recently started taking Prozac and I am already experiencing different changes. It's really helping me with my depression, anxiety and panic. I'm glad I finally made the choice of getting help with medication. I been suffering for years.
No, because the Serotonin doesn't get destroyed it just sits there and gets reabsorbed into the cell much much slower. Meanwhile, the neuron is building new serotonin so you end up with more than the day before. (It does not work like for example xtc (MDMA), which depletes your Serotonin all at once so you don't have any the next day. Because MDMA doesn't inhibit the reuptake, it just depletes it all.)
I took one Lexapro, prescribed to treat ADHD, and it made me SO sleepy and lethargic. I couldn't wait for it to leave my system. I don't know if I should give it a shot maybe for a few days, or if it's just not right for me. So far NOTHING that's been prescribed for me has worked: Adderral, Lamictal, Trazodone (to sleep), now Lexapro. I get the feeling that all doctors do is throw medications at you in an experiment basically to see if something works. In my case, EVERY single one has made me feel horrible.
I'm a medical student and it is really hard to prescribe drugs for such conditions because sometimes it varies patient to patient. You should look into meditation, etc it could help.
I know now a days, the neuroscientists think depression isn’t caused by an imbalance, but Id like to remind them of the thousands of people helped by SSRIs (including myself) seem to reflect that this line of thinking isn’t totally incorrect
Hi, is there a theorie on how the serotonin reuptake is actually blocked? Is the reuptaking part being sealed for example or being made less sensitive, or how does is work?
FYI... It's super hard for us hearing impaired to read our captions with the annoying add or whatever it is, in the way of the closed caption. Something to think about.
I was trying to see if you have a similar video, but for how SNRIs work. Is there much of any difference in the way they work? They inhibit reuptake of norepinephrine, but what about the Seratonin? And what about the norepinephrine in the case of SSRIs? I had tried Zoloft, but I didn't sleep for 3 days straight so I had to come off of it. Every time I would fall asleep I jolted awake with a body spasm, no matter how tired I was. Countless times each night. Now I am starting on an SNRI to see if my body handles it better. I am trying Effexor, granted I am worried about all the side effects and withdrawal/permanent withdrawal symptoms some people have. Maybe I'll decide to just continue in anxiety and not go through all of this stuff as i'm currently feeling shaky/off with my first dose of Effexor I took this morning.
Hi Jacob, SNRIs inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, while SSRIs primarily inhibit the reuptake of serotonin. Both types of drugs can cause sleep problems in a subset of patients who take them. Some drugs in these classes might be more or less likely to cause sleep problems in certain patients. The paper linked below discusses SSRIs and SNRIs and which drugs in these classes (according to FDA data) are more or less likely to be linked to sleep disturbances: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5548844/ Skip down to the section titled "Effects of Antidepressants on Sleep" and you might find some useful information there.
I feel like with any medication that just treats symptom instead of causes its the same problem; it removes the signals your body gives you and depression is a strong signal concering the way youre living (ofc not speaking for anyone with some kind of physical brain disorder) So what scares me and what i see happening a lot is that people just take the drug and continue living the disconnected lifestyle theyre living - which for me seems just what a system that gives these out like candy is promoting anyway
Absolutely there are more effects going on here than serotonin re-uptake. After 1 year of Celexa/Citalopram to support CBT, I became emotionally blunt and careless. I realised something was wrong when I felt brighter and more alive after I accidentally missed my dose to the day. According to the theory there should have been no noticable effect because of the time lag or I should have become more depressed. It blew the seratonin uptake theory out of the water for me and I got myself off them.
Cocaine is found in nature as the active ingredient in the coca plant. It is extracted from the coca plant to make the cocaine that's sold as a street drug, but it is a natural substance, and the coca plant itself is psychoactive.
I take Asentra. When I start I have to wait exactly 2 weeks before it works and I cant sleep and eat properly during that time. Also for the first couple of days I feel dizzy and my muscles are a bit paralyzed, but after that time it works very well for me. I can compare my emotions to a thermomether. Normally lets say i can feel emotions from -30(very sad) to +30(very happy). When I take Asentra my emotions are from like +5 to +30, its like my negative emotions are blocked, I always feel calm and whatever happens I never really worry about anything. Sometimes though I feel weird cuz I know I should feel sadness or anger but I dont. I wouldnt recommend taking pills cuz it doesnt solve your problems and I advocate for going to therapy but if its necessary proper pills are great.
I feel as if a fuzzy opaque blanket is wrapped around my brain and eyes after one day of taking escitalopram. Also no panic is felt and thought proses is really weird now slow but organized.

Please don’t stop taking your SSRIs. There’s nothing wrong with continuing them long-term. I made the mistake of stopping when I felt confident and well, but once I quit, things slowly got worse than before. When I tried to go back to the same SSRI medication, it never brought me back to that same level of well-being I had before I stopped.
Maybe it's an imbalance of neurotransmitters at the synaptic cleft of neurons, or maybe it's the debilitating mindset of "there's something wrong with me and I can't push through these rough emotional times." The emotions are real. They are powerful. But they are not bad. They are not unmanageable. There's nothing wrong with you. You may have a disease of the blood, heart, be missing limbs, etc. But at a fundamental level, the level of the individual/soul/consciousness, there's NOTHING wrong with you. There's nothing wrong about the way you perceive reality. You feel emotions that seem overwhelming. But you are in control. Sometimes they do overwhelm us, the emotions, desires, etc. But we are in control. Deep down, we are okay.

Thank you for this. It is said that ssri’s work instantly in woman with PMDD alluding to the fact that they convert to ssbs are you able to explain this or anything to do with PMDD please.
Anybody have issues with SSRI after a few year of use? And a loss of natural serotonin production? Problems like needing a higher dosage or just not having an effect anymore w ssri? Thanks!
the video makes it kind of confusing to understand. basically the proteins which trap serotonin are inhibited , so a larger concentration of it is present , which is believed to help depression. people with depression are believed to have a lack of serotonin production for unknown reasons , so this is the best method of treatment for now until scientists can discover more. neuroscience is incredible, and has the potential to make people happier, healthier and more aware.
it is incredible but we should oly be using the drugs as a short term method and instead be investing in improving our communities, cultural behaviours and connections so we can naturally improve our serotonin levels. that way drugs are utilised more for those people who are naturally low in serotinin.
There was a shortage in my country , i have been prescribed paroxetine for a year , 3 days off and hell started each day So much chronic pain , i was so heavy , tired. I always thought that pain is from other factors , not my depression until i got off meds (did not have an option until i go to another country to get my meds). Mental breakdown at from 4 am to 5 am sucked , grasping for air , calling for help. It has been 3 days since i "restarted" my medication. Insomnia still occurs, tired but can not fall asleep , but atleast the pain got managable. Funny how people do not get it that you are in pain , they think ah he is just unhappy or sad , i would gladly be just sad without pain. Mental breakdown while working out sucked ass

***UPDATE*** For a full explanation of the last couple sentences of the video, please read the explanatory article linked here: neuroscientificallychallenged.com/on-the-effectiveness-of-antidepressants
Please note that with the last 2 sentences of this video I’m not making a claim that SSRIs don’t work.
Again, please read this article if you want the full story: neuroscientificallychallenged.com/on-the-effectiveness-of-antidepressants

He left another comment to explain that statement better.
How has it gone for you so far? Im starting Prozac for anxiety and information is very conflicting.
This exactly. I started taking and now I can rationalize my fears and it’s easy for me to deal with them.

I think your statement about multiple mechanisms and some being helped by SSRIs but others not probably applies to depression as well.
@@neurochallenged Yes, I agree. I don’t think we fully understand how SSRIs work. First, it’s known that people with SAD have fairly high serotonin levels.
They saved my life twice and i was bad. Defo grateful to be living in this age and i tried a lot of holistic methods only.
now this got me overthinking and wondering if my meds are actually gonna work 👁👁

Hank Green explains the science way better. Please watch that video before you make any decisions. From personal experience these work, you just have to find the right one. It took 4 different SSRIs before I go on one that works for me.
Just watch Dr. Robert Lustig videos... And change to a Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting...
Hi. Don’t take it. Goodbye.
It works the first day for me
@Silvester Utd. whats that
I am not advising anyone of anything as I am not a Doctor.. Not having long & lengthy episodes.. not recalling my father when anything goes wrong.. one of the best decisions in my life
I’m proud of you bro
Thanks to SSRI/sertraline my constant inner ’emptiness’ and depressive feeling is finally gone
@@sibsbubbles may I ask how come? Why did it make you feel uncomfortable? Thanks for replying and congratulations on quiting drinking! :)
Hey how are you now?
الدواء الوهمي هو الشعور بالتحسن بعد تناول الدواء مباشرة بسبب تفاعلات افيونيه
I would argue that SSRIs only really work when the depression is induced by (or worsened by) anxiety.
Can you please elaborate on this?
argue then
Your argument is very interesting and you're probably onto something but I wouldn't say SSRIs "only" work on those co-morbid with anxiety issues.
Hello Bro, can you suggest some other methods?
please do not do general bogus statements like this. they are meant to be used for as long as you need them, no time limit.
many people have been through therapy and all sorts of lifestyle changes and still weren't able to solve the problem. for those, SSRIs might be a permanent answer.
I used to take SSRI because of my depression, once I took it, it didn’t work and I didn’t feel anything, I guess my depression was as stronger then SSRI, how I’m still here today in 2023 is still a mystery as my depression still grows
Lexapro 10mg has helped sooooo much. thank you scientists 🙏🏻
I just started on 5 mg three days ago. My doctor ordered that I increase to 10 mg in a week. Does it help for social anxiety and overall calmness and focus ??
@@ESPN5150
Idk about focus. But this was my experience:
I've been on for 4 weeks now 10mg. Good luck
Thanks for explaining reuptake and blocking clearly and succinctly
Is depression CAUSED by low serotonin, or is it just the way emotional unrest physically manifests itself in the brain in order to create the experience of depression? No one has answered this yet.
It isn't answered because the question is wrong. Depression is caused by a bad psycho-social environment or too high expectations in contrast of reality for example. SSRI's only surpress the frontal lobe activities so you tend to feel more okay with things, good or bad.
@@scarecrowprowler not true. Psychiatrists literally blame neuro chemical deficiencies for depression on a regular basis.

I don't know, I had a really bad odd ocd and it showed a bit of improvement as soon as I took my ssri meds..
How are you now?
Me too, I'm taking SSRI for OCD, specifically harm OCD and I have seen a major improvement after only a few days on the meds. I've been taking them for 1 month now and I'm way better than I was before I started the treatment.
That doesn't rule out the placebo effect of taking the drugs.

So you end up with less serotonin day after because reuptake was blocked and not stored back (after synaptic cleft is empty)?
No, because the Serotonin doesn't get destroyed it just sits there and gets reabsorbed into the cell much much slower. Meanwhile, the neuron is building new serotonin so you end up with more than the day before. (It does not work like for example xtc (MDMA), which depletes your Serotonin all at once so you don't have any the next day. Because MDMA doesn't inhibit the reuptake, it just depletes it all.)
Yep I felt it after a couple hours the first pill! It didn't take weeks to work at all!
Try Bupropion
I know now a days, the neuroscientists think depression isn’t caused by an imbalance, but Id like to remind them of the thousands of people helped by SSRIs (including myself) seem to reflect that this line of thinking isn’t totally incorrect
Not very informative for those of us on SSRIs and struggling with the side effects. Can you suggest a more informative video of yours on this topic?
lol fr this video sucked
Hi, is there a theorie on how the serotonin reuptake is actually blocked? Is the reuptaking part being sealed for example or being made less sensitive, or how does is work?
FYI...
It's super hard for us hearing impaired to read our captions with the annoying add or whatever it is, in the way of the closed caption.
Something to think about.
Thank you for letting me know. I removed that ad and removed any ads like this that I control on all of my videos.
Sertraline (zoloft) calmed my mind 🙏🏻
I just started Zoloft a couple of weeks ago and I already feel a lot better
Really nice work.
I feel like with any medication that just treats symptom instead of causes its the same problem; it removes the signals your body gives you and depression is a strong signal concering the way youre living (ofc not speaking for anyone with some kind of physical brain disorder)
So what scares me and what i see happening a lot is that people just take the drug and continue living the disconnected lifestyle theyre living - which for me seems just what a system that gives these out like candy is promoting anyway
How long would you reccomend staying on SSRIs? Many people say they are short term, but how short term is my question?
Is there anything in nature that inhibits reuptake of neurotransmitters?
Yes, there are many substances that do. Cocaine, for example, is naturally found in the coca plant and it inhibits the reuptake of monoamines.
Cocaine requires some chemistry to be used as a drug? I meant natural as in off of the vine without alterations.
Cocaine is found in nature as the active ingredient in the coca plant. It is extracted from the coca plant to make the cocaine that's sold as a street drug, but it is a natural substance, and the coca plant itself is psychoactive.
saffron, rhodiola. may cause mania.
I think St. John's Wort has a similar effect of increasing serotonin, because SSRI's interact with SJW and may lead to Serotonin Syndrome
Why would a placebo take a month to work though?

It’s been 5 years on ssris now and I’m ready to go back to all natural
Please don’t stop taking your SSRIs. There’s nothing wrong with continuing them long-term. I made the mistake of stopping when I felt confident and well, but once I quit, things slowly got worse than before. When I tried to go back to the same SSRI medication, it never brought me back to that same level of well-being I had before I stopped.
Zoloft was prescribed more frequently than any other antidepressant in the USA in 2018 with over 38 million prescriptions.
Definitely not a placebo. Took 6 weeks, but was finally able to get out of bed the first time I started fluoxetine.
Maybe it's an imbalance of neurotransmitters at the synaptic cleft of neurons, or maybe it's the debilitating mindset of "there's something wrong with me and I can't push through these rough emotional times."
The emotions are real.

Anybody have issues with SSRI after a few year of use? And a loss of natural serotonin production?
Problems like needing a higher dosage or just not having an effect anymore w ssri? Thanks!
Yes I've had this. I now take SNRIs which are helpful :)
the video makes it kind of confusing to understand. basically the proteins which trap serotonin are inhibited , so a larger concentration of it is present , which is believed to help depression. people with depression are believed to have a lack of serotonin production for unknown reasons , so this is the best method of treatment for now until scientists can discover more. neuroscience is incredible, and has the potential to make people happier, healthier and more aware.
it is incredible but we should oly be using the drugs as a short term method and instead be investing in improving our communities, cultural behaviours and connections so we can naturally improve our serotonin levels. that way drugs are utilised more for those people who are naturally low in serotinin.
Thank you for this video.

So much chronic pain , i was so heavy , tired.
