I am super happy to find this video. I had the privilege of participating in an Alla Prima Portrait class taught by Sean Cheetham at the Scottsdale Artists School. I am already a fan of Andrew Tischler. I greatly appreciate two of my top favorites in one video.
I appreciate the truthfulness. I've been stagnant. I used to paint murals....cut my throat. I'm starting a knew canvas. I'm 40. Im excited for new comings. Going back to the foundations. I appreciate you.
I've kept my portfolio for years. I have a friend that paints. Shes been working on the star wars gig for Disney. But ....is that fun? I think ultimately it's you being unique and creating an unseen emotion.
I really enjoyed hearing you talk about the value (or not!) of going to art school. It's true that many people just take tertiary education because it's the next thing to do. I went to music college on a scholarship when I was 19, but during my entire time there, I never received any career's advice about how to approach the "business" side of earning a living through using one's creative skills. I think, art, like music and the arts education in general have forgotten the value of "apprenticeship, and learning from a Master, whilst working. Thanks again for a very enlightening podcast !
PLEASE DO make a video on how to work with a bad reference photo! That would be immensely helpful. I’m having that problem with commissions where I wasn’t able to take good reference material myself. I’m glad you’re back!
I remember seeing a cute T shirt slogan that said “life is too short to drink cheap wine” well, maybe that’s true, but I definitely think it applies to bad reference photos. Avoid bad references as much as possible. There are so many ways to get decent reference photos or better make value and color studies from life. A bad reference is worse than no reference. If the information in the reference is missing or inaccurate you can only replicate the error at best. You can sometimes make the most of a bad reference by limiting how you use it. For example if the exposure (values of light and dark ) is good but the color is off, then turn the photo to grey scale and use it for the values. If the photo shows the shapes perspective and proportions then use it only for that not values and color. If the photo captured the colors just right you can isolate the colors with a homemade color checker and use the photo for a color study. In general avoid bad photo reference
I love, love you realism paintings so much. I am an artist and I decided to start my channel, I do not have half the talent you have! But I hope to keep progressing. Please keep posting videos!
Nice to see you back Andrew! Awesome podcast, I love Sean’s approach about what really matters in his art, like get it done the easiest, most effective way you can do and get it sold. Thanks for another great one Andrew, and I’m already subscribed to the new channel.
Awesome Podcasts Andrew. So many pointers. Sean is a badass portrait artist. Love the fact that he uses everything even tracing in order to make that $. No hold bars. Nothing and no one should hold you back in order to achieve the max in a portrait. I love painting from Photographs that is my personal opinion but i use everything to achieve the best portrait for all my customers. Thanks for sharing mate.. love it.
Great to see you back Andrew, love your podcasts and UA-cam tutorials. You have helped me to take my art to a higher level and I learn something from all of your guests, even identify different experiences that your guests also went through. Makes me feel a lot better, its not just me. Great work man.👍🎨
Hi Andrew, I m waiting for your perfect work, beautiful art, detailed realism view and also detailed informatif explanation. All i got in one place. Its very help me to learn
Well Andrew, just watched Sean Cheetham podcast. What a great chat that was. I’ll certainly follow him on Instagram as I do you and Sam. I recently bought your tisch set from Rosemary, going to use them on the winter scene dvd. Keep up the good work bud and keep that happy smile you always seem to have. You’re infectious. 😁😁
Dark Cyrstal AOR is WORTH WATCHING. Honestly they did Jim Henson well. It was a shame they didn't promote it enough and then said there wasn't enough hype and thus didn't continue the series but as a huge OG Dark Crystal fan I'm glad we got AOR.
Love this show. Pure honesty. Just to had to the conversation, when I create my art and I feel it, I really do not care what people want to say about it but I appreciate constructive criticism. Artist out there should just create for the love and passion and that’s all that matters, doors will open eventually no doubt. Great show and I wish I could give 100 thumbs up. One Love
Sean’s painting of Chantal at the BP Portrait Award is honestly the reason I was inspired to start painting again. I just so happened to be living in London at the time and went along to the National Portrait Gallery to see the show, I remember standing in front of this small painting and just being in complete awe of it, it was just so captivating! I went back to the show several times just so I could see his painting up close again and again! Thanks both for a fantastic episode!
You may like to get Darren Reid in for a chat an outstanding UK realist painter. This was a great chat enjoying your channel 👍 I’m an ex professional designer yup worked all over the world got the awards made the dollars, when it comes to painting, I see it simply as theme and the painting should sell itself, if your painting to please yourself first and not just for the dollars.
You guys are great. I just poured my heart out to some chick. Well I'll give you the jist of it. I agree 60% I know the need in your mind and your conscience. Art is an emotion. On it's own. That guy has seemed to have lost it. I've lost it. The raw livid beauty of it all. I'm gaining that back .
52:15 Why not display the prices of your artwork on your website? I suppose you still want to sell paintings, what prevents you from not familiarizing potential buyers with the prices ... In my opinion, the website of an artist is a sales channel and not a museum.
You would miss out on engagement opportunities by just showing the prices and not having a conversation. Plus, once you've told the collector the price you could either negotiate or discuss an alternative solution i.e. a commission. You would also gain their contact details for newsletters, private exhibitions etc.
My brother is a matte artist.... now CGI in the movie industry. He was drawing disaster scenes since he was 7 years old. he is now pretty old and well known in the industry. He worked at ILM for several years.
WHAT? Ok. As a huge fan of the original Dark Crystal I can tell you the one on Netflix is TOTALLY WORTH IT! It carries the same spirit, weight, highs, and lows of the original film and runs with it. They used puppets again with Jim Hensen's company and a lot of the original creators came back for it. You are missing out. There are a lot of garbage remakes out there I am very happy to say this isn't among them!
What is the name or link to the new The Creative Endeavor channel. My wife worked with Mark Keithley and he recommended your channel. By the way, we ordered your dagger brushes last Monday, received them on Friday. She is just trying them now and seems to like them. Your DVDs are on the way
Hi Kirk, It comes up on the first page when searching for : the creative endeavour podcast ua-cam.com/channels/sTJp779-5_qZJsc1WYtj9Q.html Thank you for your support Kirk, hope you love them!
Great video again man. Hats off. Hope all is well down under in NZ. Ya, its been a brutal time with covid, adjusting to mostly online sales, etc. I know its been extremely hard not to let the politics around it devolve onto my art channels. Total brain drain right? Hopefully, the vaccine comes out later this year or so, so we can get back to travelling around freely. All the best man.
The new Dark Chrystal is good Andrew. I promise. Kinda sad to see such a talented artist like Mr. Cheetham become so jaded. Or maybe it's just his personality?

best episode yet.. no egos, just honesty, and a genuine love for being creative.
thanx
I love Sean!!! So real!!!
In my senior year of high school, they created an award for excellence in art...just for me! Haven't won anything since!
I appreciate the truthfulness. I've been stagnant. I used to paint murals....cut my throat. I'm starting a knew canvas. I'm 40. Im excited for new comings. Going back to the foundations. I appreciate you.

that’s super cool, hope you’re still making art
Sean’s portraiture reminds me of Ilya Repin. The planes and structure are so solid . The forms are wonderfully expressed .
Awesome as usual. Keep on doing things!
Great vibes created by two great artists. It was awesome listening you two.

Just subscribed from here in Texas, enjoy your lessons and videos, be safe. Bruce
Thank you! This was so informative. I especially enjoyed hearing you talk about the snobbery around using photography.
A really interesting interview. So great to hear the comments from Sean Cheetham .
Great conversation. Btw, in my opinion, the new Dark Crystal is worth watching.
Hey Andrew you're rock!!!!
I would love to see a Creative Endeavour Podcast with Mark Carder and/or Andrea Kowch!!!

This was awesome. As an aside think you can get Phil Hale on someday? Please 😊
Keep up the good work as these vids/podcasts are so relevant.
When will there be another episode of the Creative Endeavor Podcast?
hi am an artist from india love your artwork
Does Sean post any of his son's artworks anywhere? I'd love to see some of the works to put a visual to his descriptions.

The Dark Crystal was amazing. Lots of great practical fx. You missed out :)
Show your guests work
Too bad this guys is no negative, he's a great painter though.
Do you have to wear a cap to be a good painter? Lol
