Help! I have a 1969 Zeiss Standard Model 18 Phase Contrast scope. It has the large slide stage. The stage X,Y movements are too loose, too sensitive to my touch. Is there a way to add friction to the movements? I looked around for an adjustment screw, but I didn't fine anything. Thank you so much for this informative video. Keith Stout
I have the same Std 18 'scope but maybe not the same x-y stage. Yes, you can adjust both the lash (slack) in each axis as well as the friction. My x-y stage has coax knobs on a horizontal shaft at the rear of the stage. The x-axis moves on a screw, while the y-axis is rack and pinion. I can adjust the x-axis friction and lash together from an access screw on the top centre of the stage at the rear. It essentially enables the clamp pressure on the horiz shaft to be tightened. Many 'scopes have a coax vertical shaft below the right rear corner. I've seen instructions for adjusting the friction on this here on youtube. In short, yes adjustments can be made, persevere and if necessary carefully disassemble, but take care - don't lose the small parts and take photos as you go in case you forget how it goes together.
When I turn the fine adjustment to raise and lower the platform, it may take several quick turns to get the platform to move. Is there something I or you can do to gain control of this adjustment so the platform will more consistently instead of after I move it quickly several times?
