Great video! I found it after doing my E60 550i fronts today. They are pretty much identical to this, except only one brake disc retaining screw (not 2 as on the M5) and no locating lugs for the disc. I really struggled. Found best way to remove the disc retaining screw is to do it first, whilst everything on. Soak it like Ryan says (WD-40 or similar) then heat it. First disc I tried, I left it till the end - big mistake. Same with caliper frame retaining bolts (18mm hex head). Sure it is OK if on a lift and you can ground clearance for long breaker bar, but on axle stands, I needed to heat, cool, heat again, before they would budge. It is also possible to just undo one of these 18mm bolts and then nudge the bracket with rubber mallet, then disc can be removed at an angle.
Hitting the rotor with a hammer to get it off fixed my intermittent ABS light ;) And cleaning all the caked on dust and using copper grease cured the weird groan noise just as the car came to a stop. It's same as brake squeal, but much lower frequency.
GREAT video. Great job. Chassis looks pretty clean. May want to check into Integral bushings and links on the rear carriers. If you can get your hands on a Chassis Ear, put a clamp on all 4 carriers and take the M5 for a spirited ride with a friend. That way you can verify everything on the carriers is running smooth. Rear bearings and bushings on the M5 get alot of abuse, especially with burnouts and such. Dynamically loading the assemblies and listening with a chassis ear is the proper way to check this. Chassis Ear's can be had for 100 dollars. I've had bearings that sounded fine going straight but sounded rough during hard cornering... If you get squeal with your current grease, try Dow Corning Molykote 111 on the piston and contact points. Proper break-in proceedure for new pads is to take it easy for the first 1000 miles. It seems Hawk has conflicting recomendations than BMW TIS. This is important for quiet smooth brakes.
Great video, I can’t believe you got so much life out of the brakes. What was the rotor thickness when you changed them out? My rears are just near the low end of the spec at 50k miles (6MT) but I have plenty of meat left on the pads.
Can I just ask a question about an E39 diesel not starting? I parked it up for a few hours with no problems then it won't start. It turns over fine but doesn't fire up. However, when inspiration Easy Start spray into the air intake it starts fine and continues running fine. If it's turned off it won't start again unless we spray it again. Any ideas why that would be?
I've just warped my rotors pretty bad tonight here on a long road in utah. Great tutorial! I'll be getting the same rotors!
Thanks!

Another great DIY!

100k miles on original disks? crazy
Hi Ryan, thanks for the informative video. Do you own this car lift or have you rented the garage space?
It's a leased space, but we own those lifts and tools.

It was low, though I did not measure it.

I know absolutely nothing about E39 diesels, I have never even seen one since we don't get them here in the US. Sorry I can't help!
How do you put the dust cover back on? I took it off and can't get it to go back on.
It lines up and then pops on. It’s been a few years since I did it, but I don’t recall having trouble.
@@E39Source Thank you for responding. I found your video from 2013 which shows how to.
Still for sale???
Anything is for sale at the right price.
why up to 2010 only?
This is just an E60 M5 specific video, and the E60 M5 was offered from 2006-2010.
