Nearly all the times I been to Churches over the last 30 years, I have never heard a sermon on the "horrors of hell", one that chills me to the bone. Jesus spoke far more about Hell than he did Heaven, and he said Hell is very real indeed. A place where punishment is never ceasing and will go one for all eternity in utter darkness. This dreadful punishment is why he became a man, so we could believe in him and avoid this utterly dreadful future. Imagine spending a Billion years in hell, knowing that your time there hasn't ever begun. Terrifying indeed. Sometimes a pastor has to make himself unliked because he is telling us all the Gospel truth. It is far better to hear the true Gospel than hear a sugar coated cosy version, because in the end that won't save anymore. I genuinely and sincerely say we all need to find faith in Jesus while God the Father lovingly offers him.

A place of personal shame. Walls of shame (personal). That's what true hell is. It's personal only between you and yourself.

No preaching about hell is faithful unless we reveal the relationship of hell to the love of God. If it wasn't for the love of God there would be no hell.
At this point you may protest - “hell doesn’t have anything to do with the love of God. God offers people his love - but when people reject his love - he then becomes eternally angry instead of loving towards them”. But that’s actually a serious doctrinal mistake - let me explain why. It amounts to believing that God is not unchanging in love - that he is in fact love only up to a point. At that point human beings have the power to cause God to be different to who he usually is. If that were true then God is being changed by his creation - this implying that he is in some sense less than fully independent - and therefore less than fully God.
So then as part of honouring Hebrews 13:8 - which says that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever - we must recognise that scripture reveals God to be ALL love - and ONLY love.
Which means that God’s anger towards sin is in some way PART of his love. We find this out in Matthew 28:37-39 where Jesus explains that all of the law is summarised in two commands - each relating ONLY to love - the first being about loving God and the second being about loving one’s neighbour. If God was more than love - if he was not all love - and only love - we would expect - as those in dwelled by God - that we too would be asked to love only to a point - and thereafter be angry in some way in contradiction to love. There is nowhere in scripture where we are told to love people until we get angry. The law of Christ is according to Jesus summed up in two great commands - each being related to love - and only love - to love God - and to love our neighbour. In v40 - having introduced the two great commandments - Jesus says (ESV) “On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets”. In other words - instead of God’s commands to us in the Old Testament about the need to be holy and the need to live justly being distinct from his love - God’s holiness - expressed as hatred towards sin - and his justice - which is God having to reward righteousness and punish wrongdoing - are each PART of his love. If one was to make a maths equation out of it it would be this:
Holiness + Justice + Mercy + Grace = Love.
Our job is therefore to work out in what way hell is essential in revealing God as a God of love.
And the answer is this - God is not only loving - he also LOVES love - he has an unlimited love for love. He believes in the absolute necessity of love. He is holy about love - his holiness includes his absolute love for all that conforms with his nature. It follows that if God has an unlimited love for all that conforms with love - he must therefore logically have unlimited hatred for anything which is freely, knowingly, and wilfully opposed to love. Hell existing - and being eternal - is therefore necessary proof of God having unlimited love for love.
So then - with these things in mind - God having unlimited hatred for evil doing - is proof of God’s having unlimited love for love. If our hatred of sin isn’t also love for love - or if our love for love is not also hatred for sin - this proves that there is something wrongly motivated about our love.
The concept of Eternal Torments and everlasting punishment was neither held by the ancient Hebrews OR the early Christian church. It is a doctrine introduced through the Papacy and became a foundational teaching of Protestantism. As fire consumes whatever is cast in it so will HELL instantly consume those who are condemned to it.
