  • Ever wonder how much hay will cows eat? In this video I try to give a detailed explanation on how much hay I feed my cows. We fought a lot of rain storms this last summer and so we had some hay that wasn’t put up in the best of conditions. So in this video I explain how I feed up bad hay to my cows.

    Yep, always enjoying your videos 🍺❤️
    Thanks so much for the massive effort in putting these together.
    I find them very informative, and the photography/editing skills are becoming very refined.
    Trust all is ok, and hoping the family and people close to you, are doing real well.
    Looking forward to the next one.
    Cheers 👍

      Thanks for the encouragement! My family and new baby are all doing good! Hope you and your family are doing well also. We are looking at some colder temps this week so I’m trying to be ready for that. Take care!

      That sounds brutal! We got lucky here it was supposed to get around -20 but the lowest I’ve seen is 2 above. Seems like alot of places East of the divide got pretty frigid.

    Another great video, that's an excellent way to feed your beefers clean ground to eat off and scatters the manure out also making it easier to drag out in the spring. Probably a bit more work but you save in the end I believe. I remember a saying one old cattle dealer out this way use to say, sometimes you may lose a little on the popcorn but you can make it up on the peanuts. My brother and I would go with my dad around to different farms and pick up calves and cows to go to auction. I'll tell ya we did meet some characters, that was in the late fifties early sixties there were fifty seven working farms just in our town back then now there are six. That auction barn has long been shut also I believe there's one left in the middle of the state, anyway your cows look in good condition. I saw a clip of Elk migrating down to flat ground somewhere in Wyoming have u seen any coming around your area yet. That fence you put up should work good. Stay safe say hi to the family

      That sounds about like here. Almost every family around here used to be a dairy and now there are none. Besides the few that are selling their milk directly to the public. I like feeding this way there is next to no waste and you can spread your manure around where you want it by feeding in that area. Good to hear from you

    Good update! Great explanation of your winter feeding program! I like that you mix all the feed (good, bad and ?) for the best energy source! No waste! I wonder how much your winter feeding increases versus warm weather versus there body conditioning? Good effort and explanation with this video answers questions I had! Keep up the good work!!

      Thanks! I’m glad this one was a little more informative. Seems like if it’s really cold I end up feeding 5-10 lbs extra per cow. I don’t really have an exact science for it but mostly guesstimate haha. If there’s hay left on the ground the next day when I feed I know I fed too much. Hope you are doing good. I imagine you guys have been wet this week. We’ve been hammered by storms all week and it seems like they usually come through you first.

    Hi Bryan. We got cold. Single digits last night and next two also. I think we usually average mid 20s. Thankfully no snow but have had some rains in December. You’ll probably get few babies from your new cows as that front moved thru.
    Enjoyed your video!

      Thank you! How often do you guys get that cold? That could cause some havoc if you weren’t prepared for those temps. Of course the cows like to calve in a blizzard. I’ve had 3 new ones this week. It’s been a lot of work haha. Good to hear from you!

    Exactly no waste. Some farmers tell me im wasting feed rolling it out.💩💩. Even the horses waste feed also💩
    Only time there is waste if the feed is poor quality and mold dusty etc.
    Then there is feed sitting around. U can't plame them for not eating that scrap.

    • @LuthiRanchWY

      You definitely waste more feed using feeders. I like feeding this way because 1. No waste 2. Being able to have the cows spread their manure around for you 3. Everyone has room to eat and prevents competition and pushing.

    Just curious why you silage bales are so light?? Up here most silage bales are weighing in at roughly 2000lbs and my dry feed round hay is 1600

    • @whiteface5055
      @whiteface5055 4 місяці тому +2

      I think he had mentioned that was an estimate on a dry matter basis excluding the water.

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes what whiteface said. I would say our Silage bales weigh close to what yours do, that 1800-2000 lbs range. I just estimate that we bale then up at a 40-50% moisture content so I figure almost half of that weight is water. So that’s where I come up with the 1000 lbs of dry matter weight. It’s all just a guesstimate though haha. What size are you round bales? I would say are dry round ones are 5’ by 5’ and weigh around 1200 lbs maybe a bit more

    • @bcpfarmandtrucking6560

    great vidios ....was just wonder if the alfalfa you feeding your cattle are not causing bloating.. .or do you mix it with hey..

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  4 місяці тому

      We usually have a bit of grass mixed with our alfalfa. We don’t usually worry too much about bloating unless we are feeding 2nd crop alfalfa. We only get 2 crops up here and the 2nd is usually smaller than the 1st. Feeding on the ground also helps since a lot of the leaves will sift down into the snow. We’d worry more about it if we were feeding in feeders too since all the leave would be contained.
