Who will the Lakers Target (Finney-Smith? Johnson? Turner? Murray? Valanciunas?) as Trades Begin?

  • December 15 is generally seen as the start of NBA Trade Season, because so many players become trade-eligible at that point.
    And over the weekend, a couple of trades-including one sending former Laker Dennis Schröder to Golden State-got the ball rolling. Schröder was a name at least some Lakers fans had their eye on, but the Nets not only got a couple of second rounders, but also the expiring deal of DeAnthony Melton. That is a package the Lakers would be hard pressed to match, without overpaying and eliminating the possibility of executing more consequential deals. But it's also not a crazy high price overall, which is encouraging to LA, given their lack of high-appeal trade assets.
    So where should they turn their attention?
    Is it the backup center, where Jonas Valančiūnas has been on the radar for a while? What about Robert Williams III, on Portland? Does another big make as much sense as a potential package of wings? Dorian Finney-Smith and Cam Johnson could be the next two guys on the move for Brooklyn. Could the Lakers make a compelling offer there? Certainly those guys would bring a lot of roster balance and versatility, even while leaving the team short at guard (because presumably D'Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent would both have to go to make the money work).
    What about revisiting older targets, like Dejounte Murray, now leading a fast-crumbling Pelicans squad that reportedly is interested in trading Zion Williamson? Myles Turner, if Indiana can't get its act back together? Would they consider moving on from a guy who is just a little older than the timeline that franchise seems to be on?
    Keep in mind, the Lakers likely can't make more than one or two moves before they run out of stuff, and even small deals involving second rounders have to be weighed carefully, because those picks would be needed to sweeten the pot in whatever way the Lakers can, should bigger names/better trades become available.
    There have been times this season the Lakers looked worth investing in. Other times, they seemed like a team that should be selling, not buying or even standing pat.
    Hard decisions are coming, and the Lakers have to hope the (very) early trends in the market prove sustainable.
    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
    SEGMENT 1: LeBron returns to action, but his foot isn't quite right and likely won't be going forward.
    SEGMENT 2: Dennis Schröder to Golden State. Helps a rival, but the market could be encouraging.
    SEGMENT 3: What other trade targets are there for LA?

    Just being honest, you guys are the best podcast for Lakers talk. You guys are honest and offer options and ideas for improvement. The other lakers podcasts just talk and talk and never criticize the name players and only the role players, and never the front office. This team should either go all in or blow it up. Those are the only 2 options. Agree? I believe tweets can be made to make a run, but if not then blow it up already. Save knecht, reeves, Christie, kaloko, , maybe rui, I’d dump everyone else for picks or wing players. You can find bigs easier than wings and point guards imho…

    Thank you!!! I’ve been saying this for weeks! Trade all picks needed and everyone but AD and LBJ to get D. Murray and M. Turner. If we can keep Knecht, good. If not, get a shooter. Murray and Turner would fit well and play defense. If it doesn’t work out, they have more future value than our current players and can probably recoup picks later if needed. But a starting lineup of Murray, Knecht(shooter),LBJ, AD and Turner would match up well against the league for the rest of the season

      Absolutely agree but each should cost 2 FRPs. But we have swaps too, so maybe we can get it done. That would be an incredible powerful move that would really improve the team.
      We would be giving Reaves in that scenario, so that should save us the picks. Reaves fit Indy pretty well actually, they might do a straight up with Turner, which is a good trade for both teams

      *Lebron leaves.
      Common sense says that free agents took lower pay in small market cities because they refused to play with Lebron, and players are telling their teams that they do not want to be traded to play with Lebron and add that with the fact that teams have a history of not doing trades with Lakers so you are not a Lakers fan because real Los Angeles Lakers fans grew up in Los Angeles watching and learning about their city's teams

    • @LeonarRonquillo
      @LeonarRonquillo 12 днів тому

      @@unholyknights You can hate LeBron all you want but the moment he leaves, this team will be surefire lottery bound, even with AD. I get he's not LeBron-ning anymore due to his age but he's still contribute whenever available. Maybe like 7 good games out of 10 where the 3 games are just shit show. People like you who says trade LeBron are just plain delusional.
      LeBron put the Lakers back on the map because I'm pretty sure the Lakers were bottom feeder in the West the moment Kobe retired.

    Andy is right on choosing Timelord over JV, I won't trade for either but Williams would be a better fit with the Lakers "if he's healthy". Beside being a more versatile defensive player, you can have more optionality with him if you are planning to keep C-Wood. He has also shown that he can contribute to a contending team and has more willingness to be a role player unlike JV.

    Here's a big, juicy, never will happen hypothetical - 4-team deal: Rui, JHS & a 1st for Cam Johnson. Reddish, Hayes and a 2nd for Nick Richards. D'Lo, Gabe and a protected 1st/1st swap for Dejounte Murray. Sign Fultz to a vet min. Starters are Murray, AR, Cam, Bron & AD, bench 5 of Fultz, Christie, Knecht, Vando & Nick. Okay, I need a break from the trade machine.

    I'm so bullish on Dejounte. Was gutted in the summer he didn't come.
    NOLA might be wary of trading a big player with us again and he also cost them 2 FRPs and Dyson Daniels 6 months ago.
    I think it takes at least our 2 FRPs. I'm paying that. I'm also sending Max if it's what gets it done.
    Dejounte is the best fit in the league with Reaves. He makes us better now with Bron and is young enough to build with after Bron.
    We have to do everything in our power to get him, he's the only game changer in the market that dramatically improves our team. DO IT ROB!!

    With limited assets, an aged star, and one whose inconsistent as a 1a, this team should be looking to recoup and rebuild

    2nd Best Trade Partners - WAS/CHI/NO (1-2 of these Players: BI/Kuz/LaVine/Jonas/Vucevic/Murray).
    Side Note - None of these Players put US in Championship 🏆Contention during the remainder of the LBJ Era (24/25 or 25/26) however, I would give up 2-1st for Players that could help US now and in the Post LBJ Era (Players Under 30).

    i think a lot of us are a bit over dramatic on fixing the lakers . we don't need more stars we just need people that will fit . look at dallas
    2 stars and the rest are good role players . i'm a bit tired of the murray's and lavine's of the world . what does this squad need . a center who can help ad with big bodies (jonas is 1st for me cause you can't trust williams his health ) a guard who can defend or a wing . and more bench scoring (get lonzo ball for that ) . LA has 2 2nd rounders (i think ) and 2 1st rounders.

    I'll trade DLo, Hayes and a 1st for Turner, you'll have to include Jax since they are giving a big man and they are already short of big man because of the injuries. Trade Vando, JHS and Lewis and a couple of 2nd rounders for DFS. I love Vando but you'll have to trade him if you're getting DFS since they will be roster duplication and he can't stay on the court. I'd also make a move for a guard like Marcus Smart or another back-up veteran point guard like CP3 or Conley-type to replace Gabe. If you're also trying to get both wings from the Nets, you'll need to be ready to part-ways with both of your wings with Vando and Rui.

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers  11 днів тому

      I'm not saying a two-big frontcourt can't work at all, for any team, period. I'm talking about an attempt by the Lakers to recreate the 2020 frontcourt in 2025, which I don't think is suitable for a core built around LeBron at 40 and AD at 31. Cleveland's two-big frontcourt, with a pair of younger and highly mobile bigs in Mobley and Allen, is completely different than a two-big frontcourt with AD and Valanciunas (who's been linked heavily to the Lakers). The latter pairing isn't nearly as versatile or quick (to say nothing of how Valanciunas is a considerably worse player than Allen or Mobley). It's why, were I forced to pick between Jonas and Robert Williams III, I'd choose the latter because he at least allows for more defensive optionality. But it's still not as good as a LeBron/AD starting frontcourt anyway, so what's actually gained here? (Williams as a backup? Different story. But that's not what's being discussed here.)
      It's not just about the 4/5 tandem itself, either. A true two-big frontcourt doesn't work as well for the Lakers now because that forces LeBron to spend more time at small forward, which will exacerbate his current defensive issues even more. The Cavs have a prototype 3&D wing role player with Isaac Okoro, who's far more suitable for that role (even if obviously not as good an overall player as LeBron). And frankly, I'm against long stretches with AD pushed further from the basket in the first place. He's better at the five, and it's better for the team. It's about the whole picture.
      Could there be exceptions? Sure. Like I said during the show, if, for example, Myles Turner becomes an option, he's a great two-way fit with AD, and creates a look much closer to Cleveland's setup (if that's what you're looking to emulate). Those two would be so good offensively (with Turner's shooting) and especially defensively (so you can offset the issues with LeBron) that they'd become viable options. But even semi-realistic examples like that are few and far between, in my opinion.
      AK

    Personally I think we should flip to being sellers. That’s where the value is. But, if we are going to go for it, let’s give ourselves a high risk high reward CHANCE to win it all. Zion is the only all nba caliber player on the market. He only costs $36m in matching salary so won’t kill our depth. Two firsts might get it done because of his injury history. Maybe a change of scenery in a big market like he wants to be in gets his head on straight and take his health seriously. He’s not a perfect fit, our spacing would be bad. But he’s a good weak side rim protector and we would have the greatest paint point differential in the history of the sport.

    I don't want to be cynical, but all these same names linked to Lakers are pipe dreams. And Andy saying the Twin bigs of 2020 is not a thing then to throw out Myles Turner as a perfect pairing just confuses me. Kudos for Murray, but you got to give them AR15 and Max to be a fair deal on both sides. Nick Richards ain't coming Brian, Charlotte would be morons to give him away without getting high draft capital. My hope is Lakers play their defenders more than not and roll up their sleeves to fight for a playoff spot. Trades would be great, but good rotations and decent coaching are just as important.

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers  12 днів тому

      The difference between a Myles Turner/AD combo and the 2020 model is that Turner is considerably better than JaVale or late-stage Dwight, a far more versatile player who can guard and operate offensively inside or out (unlike JaVale/Dwight, who could only do either inside), and much younger than Dwight/JaVale in 2020. For that matter, Turner's younger than AD. He could grow with AD over the next few years of his prime. With Turner, you retain more of the best version of AD (which, in my opinion, keeps him closer to the basket on both sides of the ball) while adding more defensive reinforcement/integrity as LeBron would inevitably have to guard more in space, which isn't ideal. The optionality and pragmatic needs both increase.
      It's not simply about "two bigs," which rather which two. As LeBron and AD age, the choices become more specific.
      Hope that makes sense. Thanks.

    For as much as Lebron boasts about taking care of his body, have you seen this man's feet and toes? Neglected to say the least. Toe spacers daily with foot/ankle mobilization exercises (or yoga) would be extremely beneficial....probably should have done it 10 years ago, but yeah he was taking care of everything but arguably the most important thing, his feet.

    These trades work in the trade machine and I think it’s realistic. Trade dlo rui reaves christie to the bulls for lavine, dosunmu, craig. Trade gabe Vincent and hood schifino and a couple 2nd round picks to the nets for Dorian finney smith. Trade dalton khnect and a first round pick unprotected 2029 and upgrade the already protected 2027 first round along with a 2028 first round pick swap to the jazz for walker Kessler. With the open roster spots now available sign Lonnie walker and Dennis smith jr. new lakers rotation
    Pg - ayo dosunmu
    Sg- Zach lavine
    Sf- Dorian finney smith
    Pf- lebron James
    C- Anthony Davis
    Key bench players walker kessler, jarred Vanderbilt , Christian wood, Torrey Craig , Lonnie walker, Dennis smith jr

      Where’s the scoring coming from besides AD? Lavine way to injury prone to be dependable, I rather have cam Johnson than finey-smith. I also wouldn’t trade dalton.. unless you’re getting a something really of value. I think dalton has tremendous upside. He’s just got to get his confidence right and figure out some things.

    If LBJ Requests a Trade, We should get Pic(k)s, Kuminga/Wiggins/Hield/Moody then, Cut Wood/Cam and Trade FINO/MaxL for Nik. Real LAker Fans would be Truly Thankful for The Great Times (#17/etc.) LBJ brought US but, We wouldn’t lose a Night of Sleep 💤 with this Trade!!!

    • @LockedOnLakers
      @LockedOnLakers  12 днів тому

      "Long and athletic" isn't specific to the 2020 model, though. That's what every team in the league would want now if possible to create. They're pretty much all shooting for that template. What I was referring to with 2020 (and more specifically, what many fans are referring to) is replicating the model of two seven-footers (or close), one of which is strictly a paint-bound presence, that pushes AD to PF 60-ish percent of minutes, and LeBron out to SF. For a variety of reasons, I don't think that specific look is viable with LeBron and AD five years older than during the championship season. If you disagree with that piece of it, fine. Fair enough. But at least disagree with what I'm actually referring to. AK
