Mr Guthrie, that opening intro of those big soulful interval chords are really tasty. The way you can lace all kinds of musical influences into a single passage is truly amazing. And then you put the cherry on top by playing funk. My greatest fear if i am honest is i will run out of life before i can ever get to play that musical and that fluidly. And please...keep just "throwing stuff out there".
Artist works subscriber .... good stuff ... in the mode of mastering the five chord shapes .... more free than ever ... just grinding away .... hearing more than ever imagined ....thank you sir... and a shamless plug ... your materials for sale are priceless..... GOLD
You are an inspiration, your blend of humbleness and musicality is unique. You give freely and I'm just one of thousands out there that appreciate what you are doing. I'm a happy retiree hack guitarist that will never have the speed of thought and hand to play like you Guthrie. However, every video I come away with at least 1 or 2 things that I can incorporate into my playing. Your gift to guitarists is special.
GT just beautiful mate…e harmonic minor is one of the best sounds on the guitar. Love your videos that talk about following our ears and exploration. Keep it coming dude.
I used to come watch you play as a 14 year old boy at Roberts all the way back in 2002ish? You were this brand new guy in Nashville with Don Kelley and my cousin Joel and I would come and just drool over your solos. Ghost riders always gave me chills. I appreciate you keeping the music coming. I'm proud to have known you then - and just as inspired by your playing today!!
It is so good to see you clean and off the sauce. Hang in there. Thank you so much for your videos. I pick and learn what I can from. You are such a talented and skilled musician. Peace to you
“I’m just letting the notes I’m hearing take me where I think it should go” I love that as much as anything I’ve ever heard on UA-cam, or anywhere for that matter. Well said GT. I could not have said it better. That’s me to a T. I only wish I had the talent and teaching to get me where I’m hearing 🤣🤣🤣. So I could take me where I think it should go. IMO- that’s music. 🙏🙏🙏
Oh GT not only sounding great but looking pretty damn good doing it. Congrats and thanks for what you do. You have literally added so much to my playing.
Great you went to see Phish man. I too would love to hear some more about your experience and what you thought of Trey's guitar chops and the band as a whole. Keep it comin brother!!!✌
I am a fan now! Your playing and willingness to share knowledge is great! The video of you playing with a group, with Joe Bonnamassa, AND Billy Gibbons walked in...hehehe!!! Very cool! That group was very cool! Even that bass guy/front man had a very cool swagger! Watched that video several times! The whole thing is great! Rock on brother and MUCH success to you sir!
CONGRATS on your sobriety…!✊🏼.. and thanks for the “funk-spiration”..! As a bassist turned floundering guitarist,I’m gonna see what I can do on the James Brown stuff..! Keep em coming..!
re: the opening progressions you play - it's great to hear Clive Carrol's "Song For Chris Berry" being reinterpreted - you adapt it well and beautiful teaching piece, thank you
Thx GT. Wish I could visit Nashville, East Nashville, that is, and experience your talents live. Someday. I live in Newport Beach, Ca. Living here is a pleasure too. I look forward to your next video. 👍😊🎸
That's awesome. I've been working on these "spread triads" in pursuit of learning Eric Johnson stuff and the timing is perfect that you just released this video. Eric Johnson mastered this spread triad thing and it's so damn tasty man.
Love it brother, looking sharp, sounding sharp, keep staying on the righteous path… thanks for these videos Guthrie, they’re keeping me motivated and helping me stay positive…
Some very very pretty stuff you started with :-) You mentioned you like seeing behind the scenes stuff- " how thing are made". Do you like documentary's for example -a music producer and maybe one of the musicians will sit down at the mixer board and dissect an Album or songs? personally I just love it. McCartney has a new one called 3-2-1. I remember one of the first ones I saw was about the making of the Goodbye yellow Brick road album......they isolated Elton's voice along with the acoustic guitar parts for the song - Candle in the Wind ( original recording) -Elton's Voice was amazing....or the documentary about Electric Ladyland and Assorted love song Derick and the dominoes.... I just love it when they isolate tracks and talk about how the songs were recorded. :-)
Hello from Texas Guthrie! Congratulations on No Booze and I’m a Coffee junkie but only Hot Coffee , but thanks for the vid . I wish I could hear all this stuff like you and just play it , it’s like your extremely fluent in every genre , anyways thanks for being such an inspiration.. I’m a fan for life . And don’t miss a video
Enjoy your videos, as always! I notice you consistently have great tone and are always well intonated. Would it be possible to share your approach to set up, e.g. action, intonation, string sizes, etc. Nothing is more frustrating than not having the sound you want to hear. Do you have preferences as to guitar type?
@@collinsstudios7098 hence why I want to get better. Although I truly have very little interest in “paid gigs” I just want to be as good as I can for my church.
Holy smoke, if this is what too much coffee does for your playing, I'm definitely gunna get me some of that. I doubt it'll do a lot for my playing but at least it'll keep me awake all night which'll gimme more time to practice, ha!.
The 3rd above the octave is considered a 10th chord. Still a simple triad, but arranged in a way to give that melody note something a little different than the typical 5th or octave.
@@BritBluesMan It can, but it's not necessary. As long as there's a root and a 3rd above the octave it's a 10th chord. Whatever you want to put in the sandwich is your choice. Or you can just eat the bread.
Guthrie: Wondering with so many versions of ES 335s, what are the specs of the one you are playing? I own a 2017 Memphis '63 reissue Block VOS with MHS humbuckers. Thinking of changing the pickups. They sound a bit flat.
@@guthrietrappmusic Thanks, brother. I will check them out. BTW, I think you are an incredible guitarist and love your videos. I think I've finally figured out the correct way to play Angeline! I also love your Floyd Cassista tele. I've traded messages with Floyd recently. Thinking of doing business with him soon.
Great stuff Guthrie. Really appreciate the perspective of a professional chickin pickin funk player like yourself. Wishing you many years with an abundance of toilet paper and coffee.
and also, you sold me on that event with that michael landough amp; and wanting one the next day that I got to believe it and get one , or you’re plugging for, nah, sounds bad. working for fender😄 just kidding, no I was, funny kidding, but was joking, not a bad joke, so don’t cut me out of advanced lessons. That intro was 'something else' !
Beautiful lines sir!!! Sneaky dim triads through in there lovely arpps scale weaving just beautiful intro

Never thought to use those wide spread triads with the pinky. Seriously great for spicing up a melody.
Those high chord tones are ethereal!

Thank you for keeping us motivated and inspired Guthrie! Your videos always put the wind back in my sails.
I love your way of teaching, so organic and real. Helps me, as a more advance player, to spice up my playing.
Another great video Guthrie, thank you!

You remind me so much of Robert Conti. A no nonsense nuts and bolts approach to putting the music under the fingers!!
So beautiful and inspiring! Thanks GT!!
Beautiful stuff. Thanks Guthrie!
Sorry for that awful thumbnail photo for the first 4 hours this video was up! Ha. I didn’t notice that until just now. 😎👍🎶
So melodic and beautifull- once again. Thanks- No more coffee!

Love this intro brother
Thanks a bunch man!!

Playing the third above the fifth I have heard called a spread triad
Wow, some great playing. Cheers Guthrie
Dang, only missed it by 136! Oh well, better late than never! Nice stuff (again), Guthrie! ✌️
Love this - so good, thank you GT
Holy yikes! What an intro GT!
Awesome playing, legendary!
Outstanding! Just what I needed to get going!
Outstanding as usual GT!!! Glad all is well!
re: the opening progressions you play - it's great to hear Clive Carrol's "Song For Chris Berry" being reinterpreted - you adapt it well and beautiful teaching piece, thank you
Wow we have pretty similar influences and yet our playing is completely different. Most people describe my playing as "terrible".

This is what I need. I want to become an incredible rhythm player. I actually find it harder than just flying through scales, etc
And yet, 90% of a paid gig is rhythm

GT, way impressed with 50. Of course, your playing is, well, you know.
I just woke up and my jaw is already dropping...
Omg! I sure hope Im not the only one trying to figure out, how to put my mouth back on my head!
You're awesome GT!
Hey Guthrie, beautiful intro. Are those cords called spread triads? Sounds awsome!
These lessons, man, thank you.

nice!
Absolutely Love it!!! Funky Meters, one more time. Keep it: shoot ‘em straight, like you do brother!!!
I think they are called 'spread triads'. Thanks GT!
Can anyone tell me what tunes he's playing 9:23 to 11:30 or so? So familiar but can't think of names.
Curiosities got me, what did you think of phish in general, just strictly the musicianship? Thanks
The 3rd above the octave is considered a 10th chord. Still a simple triad, but arranged in a way to give that melody note something a little different than the typical 5th or octave.
Wouldn't you expect a 10th chord to also include the lower 3rd, 5th, and probably 7th? These are just open-voiced triads, or spread-voiced triads.
@@BritBluesMan It can, but it's not necessary. As long as there's a root and a 3rd above the octave it's a 10th chord. Whatever you want to put in the sandwich is your choice. Or you can just eat the bread.
