I just got to thinking... There were multiple prompts to back out of the Salt Route, right? Well, I was thinking of what would happen if you don't give Spamton your SPARE key. He'd be convinced that he doesn't need a spare key, and it would branch into the Salesman Route, where you can still spare enemies, ask around on what happened to his keys, and help him reconcile with the Addisons along the way.
After doing this route,you have the option to either have spamton in your party or he gives a [[HALF OFF SALE]] of pressing f1 for help on every fight where he heals 50% of your party members hp
So pretty much a good ending for the Salt Route? It sounds nice especially after Spamton got the shit end of the stick in each route. He needs a good ending for once.
Queen's fight was terrifying. She dropped her usual chatty, memey self and doesn't speak at ALL during the fight, as well as Spamton's health rapidly depleting and Queen's stern glare instead of her patient smile. This idea was absolutely AMAZING too. I would LOVE and could definitely see something similar with Jevil in Chapter 1, at the end taking ultimate vengeance against King for locking him up. it wouldn’t be easy to manipulate Jevil as he doesn’t want anything, if he had wanted something you could use that as leverage for something like this but he really doesn’t care. he also thinks he’s free and would thank and mock the king for setting him free in that cell lol
I honestly love the fact this was rendered on a potato. It shows you don't need new devices to deliver a substantial experience, and it makes me feel better about making videos on my own PC, which is over 12 years old at this point.
It actually somewhat adds to it in another way too. Some glitches were probably from the craptop, but since they only really start going when you recruit Mr. [Wild Prizes!], which fits really well. Don't get why it's available in higher resolutions than that of my actually good laptop if it's from a craptop, though.
Dang, this makes Snowgrave look subtle. In Snowgrave, you had Noelle turn Berdly, a kid she didn't even like that much, into an ice cube and left her wondering if it was a dream or not. Salt, and you don't end at forcing Spamton to genocide his own people murder his friend, cold blood, in the middle of a hug. You make him continue on until everyone is dead, put him on a new set of strings, beat him til his teeth fall out, commit regicide, and then admit you used him the whole time while he goes home to sit in his trash dump and live the rest of his remaining days with the guilt of what he was forced to do. Salt melts snow, and I think I see why now.

What? Berdly was literally Noelle's best friend lmao. Sure he was a jackass but she doesn't really know Susie despite having a crush on her and she's estranged from Kris, she even mentions that Berdly is generally nice when it's just the two of them. Snowgrave Route is absolutely awful. I'd say this might be the less bad route just because well... As bad as it is, Spamton does deserve it a lot more than Noelle. After all, he was perfectly willing to have this be her fate. Not so nice when the shoe's on the other foot.
This is giving me strong creepypasta vibes and absolutely love it, this legit looks like some kinda abandoned lost media alternate version of the game thats hella creepy, Im all in for this kinda stuff

i actually really like how this interpretation goes. spamton never drops his personality the entire time, no matter what - he's always on the border between positive and serious, never breaking character. the route is instead formed around him, and instead of breaking his tone to fit the idea, he's given no choice in the matter. he's not woobified much here, he's the same old spam.
Something about this route has always seemed almost... Karmic? I mean obviously nobody deserves what happens in this route, but it's an interesting parallel to Snowgrave. Spamton was so willing to let Kris be a puppet, to let Noelle be manipulated and tortured with a device he gave the player. And yet in this route... He gets to see what its like, he gets to be the [hochi mama] strung along like a puppet, forced to kill those he cares about. It's a bit ironic is all.
I’m I’m being honest Noelle got it easy spamton got his teeth knocked out had to kill one of his best friends killed absolutely everyone just because he wanted his keys back and he was a puppet already before kris and Noelle he was forced to do that to Noelle and spamton lives there which means he will be alone for the rest of his life while noelle did that in a world where it’s just a dream to her and she didn’t really care about berdly to really even be concerned for him not waking up
@@kaviarlevelmui2995 What? Noelle cares a ton about Berdly, he was literally her best friend and she iterates her care for him quite a few times throughout the game. Sure their relationship isn't perfect but she's willing to sacrifice herself in the normal route to ensure Berdly's safety. Anyway my point is, that Spamton was evil already before this route- and even if he doesn't deserve all this, he certainly deserves it more than Noelle deserved snowgrave.

I feel like instead of "You don't need Mike" it might have been more appropriate to say "You don't need someone who will [Leave you in the dark]" Hits the right theme, mood, we know who he's talking about due to tone and expression and all wrapped up in a phrase that's core to deltarune. Right now, a lot of his text at the start feels like "He says this in his shop! Quirky!!" Everything else though was pretty spot on, you literally had me check to see if my headset wasn't working because the sound fucking died.
God if this were a real route... I wouldn't have the heart to do it. I love these characters and seeing Kris actually kicking the hell out of Spamton and seeing him actually getting hurt was heart breaking.
The last scene with Kris getting soft locked is so unsettling because it means they can’t even get back to the light world either, Kris will forever be trapped in a world where they have no one left.
The softlock is a great ending imo cause it really helps make the whole route feel like it was never meant to exist as if it's unfinished. The music kind of ruined the moment a bit tho
this is concerningly well made, sure it's obvious that this is fan made noticing that sometimes it CLEARLY looks like an animation, but good gosh the amount of dedication it took to probably make it anyways is suprising, and at the same time pretty depressing, seriously Kris has made Spamton go through SO much torture just because he wanted his keys back, but regardless it left me shocked of how good this is.
Well thanks! It took me around 6 months I think to complete dis, it was one of them things I wanted to make immediately after hearing about the original Salt Route posts just cause of how believable it sounded in terms of being some weird, secret route (morso than SnowGrave somehow)
man this thing is really fire, spamton is very in character, very dark, sad and editing is also very good, sometimes it is kinda off and sounds get a bit delayed but other than that i really liked this. hope this video will get the attention it deserves one day

The fact you were somehow able to mod the game itself, and add additional animations for this is pretty impressive. This is great for a fully conceptualized Salt Route. Definitely helps lay the “blueprints” for how a playable game could possibly go. Great work on this, I can’t imagine how much time you spent on this.
oh my god this is absolutely amazing, this video is horrifying and I love it. you managed to make me feel even more sorry for poor spamton than the actual game did. the whole thing just feels so creepypasta like and uncanny, and those animations of spamton on a black background asking for his keys and getting beaten up are really haunting. I honestly really hope future chapter's weird routes get as dark as this because this is an amazing concept that you have turned into a full video, and the end product is amazing. it's insane to think something this terrifying and well made could come from one person's dream. great job making this, I don't know what you used to make it but it literally looks just like gameplay, and the stuttery-ness of the video gives me huge 2000s internet creepypasta vibes.
The lag makes this feel like a content leak, and that adds to the fever dream feeling. Also just genuinely a great mod to the game, best ive seen from a technical standpoint.
i think its really cool how when your with noelle and do this puzzle (31:50) it spelled out the name of her sister, december, and when youre with spamton, it spelled out dialtone.
The fact that lancer only turns to stone after rouxls dies actually is terrifying, the fact that he saw everyone get killed yet couldn’t do anything about it

Good lord, that was horrifying to watch. I certainly enjoyed every second of it, though! The story was very well thought-out, the animations were great, the music was solid, And coming back to see this concept fully fleshed out was thoroughly satisfying! Lancer's "Whoa! Who's that clown!?" line is one of the most cutting remarks possible because it implies that Spamton is A. a clown, and B. not even one of the better known clowns

@@JQR. that's awesome, I'm glad I could provide some inspiration! it's honestly a little surreal to hear that I might've sparked a huge project like this. this has also got me considering doing another recreation, maybe one of the smaller scenes I wrote way back when (probably one of the earlier ones that are a bit more upbeat), but I'd need the right tools for the job given how tough it was making the first two frame by frame. if you don't mind me asking, what did you end up using to put this together?
@@kibbeh I recorded my Deltarune gameplay (aside from the addison fight which was completely animated) and then turned the recording into a gif file so I could draw over it in aesprite (with spamton's attacks, cutscenes and new dialogue all being drawn in). Then I put the edited gif recordings over the regular recordings and tried to add sound for dialogue and other things that weren't in the regular recording. Hope that helped!, I would love to see what you do if you ever end up making something new!
The shop discussion was good overall, but I always thought of the lost keys as the Keygen. It would then make sense why Spam would need them so badly and why he never gets Neo - can't get in the basement without it. I wouldn't have had the Keygen be buyable, but other than that, this is a really good creation of this cursed route so far.
The scene of Spamton being ruthlessly hurt and broke me inside a little, even if he isn't exactly the best guy, that hurt to watch and I almost teared up, even if there was no animation. That was sad and horrifying, but maybe that's my PTSD. Either way, this was phenomenal, even if it had it's flaws. I loved this.

Something horrifying to know is that we are doing the same exact stuff to Kris all this time. We're abusing their body, manipulating them to do what they fear, even now we're making them be a prick to Spamton.
Here's my interpretation: the salt isn't normal salt. To a lightner, it would appear like a clump of salt (I know it's just big so that it can actually be seen, but...) but to darkners, specifically computer/ai based ones, it's different. It can mess with them in weird ways when in proximity of them, like how Spamton suddenly felt like he needed to look for his keys. It might just affect Spamton's species, or it might also extend to Queen, Swatch, and (if you don't think Spamton is one) the Addisons. Kris just doesn't spend enough time around anyone but Spamton to mess with anyone else's AI. (As for Queen, well, she may be younger than Spamton, which in computers can mean better performance, and Spamton's already so glitchy as to probably make him pretty vulnerable to this kind of thing.)
When I was reading the title of the video I didn't know what the salt route was. Originally I thought it was going to be a snowgrave route but salt was gonna be used to melt the ice and free frozen enemies. Oh how I was wrong.
This entire concept video evoked the unnerving wrongness I felt when I first encountered Spamton in my first playthrough and kinda made me feel even more uneasy as the route continued with Spamton trying to get back into his usual salesman persona as a way to cope with what's going on along with his missing keys. The very scuffed and lagging recording, stuttering and absent audio, the occasionally odd scaling of some of the sprites and rough animation really add to this really weird and unnerving feeling throughout the entire route and the roughness of it all gives it a weird dream-like feel which is very fitting considering the entire salt route was spawned from the AU Creator's dream. Also really impressed that managed to get a lot of Queen's unused attacks to work during the battle and the slight flashing of blue and the random subtle size change of the screen during the battle adds to the dream-like feeling I mentioned earlier. Also I really like how you acknowledged Lancer being in Kris' spacious pants hole. People tend to forget that he's there. Him witnessing the hilariously tragic death of Rouxls Kaard and finally turning to stone was also rather mortifying and a bit funny.
it's so eerie how when you exit berdly's fight area (after entering the manhole), the music is just gone and someone's face shows momentarily on the screen instead of it doing the normal fade animation that you get when changing rooms just got to the part where Kris tries to escape and it's soooo goood

Noticable and notable changes start at around 27:50 Everything else before it is pretty much just normal deltarune gameplay, with maybe one or two oneliners about salt.
I can totally imagine someone just finding all five salts then when Spamton asks for their Spare Key they're just like "Sure, why not"... Only to be horrified when it says they can no longer Spare enemies.
thats why i think this wouldnt fit in the game, the salt would have to be really well hidden (like in the egg secrets or something) so that players just going through the game dont accidentally get this route

She just completely dismisses it after that, doesn't try asking Ralsei or anyone else or anything, she just stops, and that's dumb. People say how the snowgrave route is darker than Undertale's genocide run, but with how little the living characters react to your actions (besides Noelle which is not good enough) it's hard for me to agree.
I think i have very small personal nitpicks with this kind of au just because I can't imagine a route where Rouxls is killed off and Kris actually does direct murder (at least from what we have in canon so far). But despite that it's actually really really interesting and this concept was well done. Like others said, it really does feel straight out of a creepypasta and its actually well written and disturbing. Spamton's very in-character for the most part and the details like changing the pop-ups to relate to the keys was such a nice detail. So glad some content for this AU was made like this. It's been personally getting me thru the lack of new chapters/official content. This is actually my first real introduction to the AU route as well :) Nice job!
Seeing this just made me realize that if it's possible to get gems like this from someone's dreams of an alternate route, then damn, that's quite the dedication to seeing this thing be fulfilled (even when it's just a route that softlocks you at the end of it). Took me on quite a trip to see the original inspiration for this video, and seeing this certainly gave me the creeps (even with the unintended lag). I am a little curious as to why there's two instances of mysterious faces hidden in the video (one at 37.02 and the other at 1:10:12 - might need to pause and use the comma key to rewind a few frames for reference). The second face clearly seems to be Gaster's face (why he's smiling is something I probably don't wanna think about given this whole route is the Spamton equivalent of the Snowgrave route), but I'm not sure whose face it is at the first instance. Is it even resembling a face, or is it just something solely made for this video alone? It is just odd that these are just placed there (one even there just for a few milliseconds while another fades in before going back to the scene at hand), but I can't help wondering what they mean, context and all. Either way, this was a great video (for both my curious mind and the feels that I have for this route's Spamton ;-; )

Fun fact: “Salt” is a term used in computer science. Essentially, passwords aren’t stored in plaintext, but instead encrypted, and encrypted passwords are called “hashes”. “Salt” is essentially a random number that is added/multiplied/etc to the “hash” to make it harder to crack. (Unless the salt and hash are stored in the same space, in which case, it’s still pretty easy). Given that the Queen’s mansion is guarded by [High Quality Encryption] that is broken by the KEYGEN, it actually kind of makes sense that salt is needed for Spamton’s keys to exist.

hey also id just like to say I LOVE THIS MORE THEN ANYTHING. Just a suggestion as for a plothole in your story. Now it's your take with your ideas so I'm in no way demanding this be canon to it but a reason behind darkners being able to be killed is because when the Cyber World is created it runs on code. That code doesn't account for Spamton ever joining under any normal circumstances. Thus all Systems are bypassed allowing darkners to be killed. The way you fleshed out concepts really impressed me and actually im working on my own Salt route inspired deltarune AU titled "Garbage Collector" that essentially takes concepts from both snowgrave and salt but does it with Berdley. Id love to share some of it w you if youd like and im more just exited at such a talented creator

I had absolutely no idea about what this was, heard of it from another comment not even related to this, now that ive found it, this is incredible. It gives creepypasta vibes as another comment said. But as another comment said, i feel like the KEYGEN is what shouldve been the missing key, since no NEO body, no becoming god, etc. But even if it wasnt, im kind of dissapointed that spamton had no chance to become NEO in this route due to a giant pile of salt which couldve probably been pushed over with ease.
To start, I initially watched this video like 2 days after it came out. So I am commenting very much later(and I have rewatched/revisited a few times since then), but its cool ;) I remember seeing all the proto salt route concept videos you made before this one (which are now in the salt playlist) and being pumped and curious about the full video and salt route in general since these videos were the first that I saw that described about it more; and when I figured you released this video, I saved it, then watched it later with headphones on for the best Salt Route experience. And for being your first major video (1 hour and 35 minutes is movie length Mr. JQR!) and for ALSO being an older version, I certainly am impressed, filled with dread, and got [[100% Satisfaction guaranteed]]. This video is also amazing in the fact that you pretty much did everything that wasn’t the music listed, impressive! While others have said that they don’t like the lag/glitches/visual and audio issues that arrived from your equipment’s circumstances, I personally found those things VERY effective for this experience and adds something that is indeed unique. But perhaps that comes from me being able to… suspend disbelief, plus experience from watching FNAF and exe games or the like. I do enjoy the lag, but it’s good that you are finding ways and looking towards reducing those issues too. So many details are here and I love them. From all the pixel art, those 3 hidden pictures of: Spamton’s keys 34:25 Everyman 37:02 (funny that people couldn’t recognize him lol) and Gaster himself 1:10:13 Noelle and those guys reacting to us picking up the salt, all of spamton’s attacks and battle animations being random and funny, that one pipis phone attack leaving a pile of pipis on the ground at 46:28, nubert being worried and going away, the egg disappearing from the key items (NOOOO), the swatchling seeing Spamton using heartbreaker for the first time in the trash alley, Spamton affecting the poppup messages and being the only icon during Queen’s final fight (would have loved to see our beloved Everyman appearance in both of those things ;) ), Spamton wearing Noelle’s box, and that like “title sequence” of Spamton and Kris walking across the bridge with the Salt Route theme are so cool and appreciated. For the others not mentioned, just to let you know I have noticed them too. My favorite detail about this video which I’ve noticed that others haven’t mention yet (in 7 months no less, woah!) is that when rouxls Kaard appears, along with his theme which is a good tension-breaker btw at least for me, his arm and leg have been partially turned to stone with his left arm being completely turned to stone and his left leg being partially stone-ified, that ain’t in the normal game. This detail makes his appearance though so sad too even with him having the best buff of having two accents in this route; he wants a fun challenge even with the fact that he probably realizes that he will turn into a statue soon, and then the hammer drops when the option to accept Rouxls’ challenge is taken away and replaced with those triple dots. The result? Mr. Kaard gets heartbroken, and so does my heart too *sniff* (this moment hits harder for me because the way you… or the player immediately goes to that option when it’s fully formed is something that I would have done and would have wanted to choose too). Anyway, that’s my favorite detail, so cool and emotional too… when you think about it. When I first watched this, and I even still think this too, my impression of the story you told in this video lead me to a point/conclusion about Kris and the soul(or player) that I found to be super interesting and unique too. Unlike what other people like to say and different from what Deltatraveler is doing, I found the presentation of how Kris and the player/soul act from the dialogue and Kris’ different battle sprite after the “turning point” (I’ll get to that in a bit) to show that in this route, Kris forces and wants the route to proceed to its endgame and ultimately shatters Spamton’s person in a sick way of ultimate revenge on the player/soul. It’s like this route kind of gives us a view of how the soul and Kris would be when they finally “work” together or fully “merged”, but the horror to the player is that they can’t choose what they want but can only properly act if their actions agree with what Kris wants and in this route, Kris wants to express how much he hates being a puppet even if it means killing just a few more people and telling Spamton that they only used him like an object because it won’t matter in the end with the ending being a softlock, an inescapable prison. The “Turning Point” that leads me to this impression is the combined scene of Kris trying to throw away the soul(the player) and then the “fight” which leads to using heartbreaker on the blue Addison because you are missing your [[SPARE]] key and the following aftermath when Kris (yes, Kris) unprompted punches Spamton and rips out his strings. When Kris’ most desperate action of removing his own soul in the dark world in front of Spamton doesn’t work, Kris realizes something. This “Turning Point” is sealed (well to me) with Kris’ different battle sprite where he is limp and stiff and stabs with the sword quite lazily too like Kris is actively not trying so the soul/player take up the duty of controlling the body during battles and thus the soul has to deal with a limp human and doing attacks that will be effective. Since Kris is not doing much during battles, he uses the extra energy to say… purposefully execute the swatchling when Queen is watching(quite interesting that you made it so you end the fight by fighting an not using heartbreaker), taking advantage of the player choosing “…” (basically choosing to do “nothing” but Kris often talks when this option is chosen, base game example: Kris asks Susie about the Apple shampoo in post Ch. 2) to use heartbreaker on Rouxls and to make both the player and Kris to pound and wail on Spamton so hard that they physically break him (I tried counting, I got 37 hits, give or take a few). I quite enjoy the impression I got from your video, and whether I am right or wrong about how you wanted to tell this story, it shows something that is different from what others, especially deltatraveler, say which is that the soul is pure evil during these disturbing routes and that difference is that it shows that Kris is, well, human and he can be very desperate and petty when they both (Kris and Player) realize that the path they found themselves on will lead to nothing. And since Kris figures out that the end of this salty journey is soon, he decides to express his very repressed feelings about your control by ensuring that you can’t escape it and by breaking the one thing that may bring some joy, no matter how bleak, the other puppet Spamton. First impressions are important, so this one I got was an idea that very much stuck with me and I quite enjoyed because it was something different(especially when the video was released in May) and quite thought provoking too. Even if it’s totally different from what you tried to tell, just know that you have quite the talent for storytelling and details. (Btw, I realized this paragraph could be summed up by saying that Kris gets really SALTY in this route hehe). (Btw, I know Kris is definitely preferred to be non-binary, but I used male pronouns in the previous paragraph to avoid confusing sentences because I talk about both Kris and the player/soul.) To end, This Deltarune Salt Route concept is a unique and quite unnerving, funny, dread-inducing, and a [[Spamton approved product!]] video you have made JQR. Also, Deltatraveler was mentioned twice in this comment, nice (will appear again in another comment on another video, you might know JQR ;) ). I loved it very much and will be an experience that I will cherish. Thank you JQR.
Oh, and I would like to add that all of Spamton’s dialogue is very fitting for this route and is fun, then creepy, then saddening to see. Plus, the way the video is presented makes it feel like watching a strange version of Deltarune Chapter 2 is awesome and works with how the Salt Route was created, makes it feel dreamlike especially with the pixel art sections. * ViroVirokun wishes you a Happy New Year 1997!
Oh wow what a lovely comment! I'm glad you enjoyed this video, it was definitely one of the bigger videos I made when I first started out (you can tell cause of the bazillion secrets and stuff I tried to fit in this, ha ha) so it's cool to see that you're so understanding of it, I also think that your take on the lore of this is certainly interesting and unique compared to what I've heard from everyone else. Looking back at this I can also sorta see the appeal of the lag and jank video, like you said, gives off some real creepypasta vibes, maybe this style will make a return at some point but I'm not really sure. Oh yeah also you are right about rouxls being half stone! I think you might actually be the first one to actually point that out! His leg was obscured by the boat and his hand kinda had the same colour to his body so I can see why people may not have noticed it, anyway good job on that! In closing, I'm happy that you had a good time watching this, it might not hold up well now in the eyes of many, but still. Glad you enjoyed it! And who knows maybe this'll get a remake in the future (I've certainly been thinking about it!)
Ahh, thanks for the response! Your so sweet btw, responding to these comments in these videos. Huh, I personally find Roulx’s semi-stone appearance quite apparent. Well, everyone is different. If there was one critique I would give, albeit a very personal thing, it would be about Queen’s new mannerism at the end. The fight is great, the music is awesome, the Final Attack is crazy, but Queen being completely silent(except for the fist slam on the chair lol), while effective, I am not fond of because I find it… predictable, and a bit cheap too. Having Queen saying one thing only amidst the flow of “…” would be something I would like, something short and either bleak and apologetic towards Spamton or very hardcore like “even the trash heap is too good for you”. Though, Queen being silent is part of the original dream/concept and I do respect you for that. Thanks again JQR!

I try to respond to the comments when I can (even if there are a lot of 'em now, ha ha) I do think your criticisms about the Queen fight are quite valid, her being completely silent throughout the fight is so unlike her (and I only really did it since it was mentioned in the post, like you said), I could've definitely adapted that better since that part in particular felt lack-luster, maybe I could have tried to blend her being angry and her cannon personality a bit better, lines like "Even The Trash Heap Is Too Good For You" could have had the potential to enrich the battle like you suggested, in any case thanks for being honest about it!

THIS IS SO AMAZING BUT ITS SO SAD 😭 Like you took a literal broken man *puppet* and both manipulated and abused him. Even Kris tried to stop the route mid-way by taking out their own soul and (attempt) run away. The creator of the Salt Route *REALLY* looked at Spamton, who is already at rock bottom, threw down a shovel and said: “…Start Digging…” Don’t get me wrong the gameplay (animation?) and AU itself is just *Chef Kiss* PERFECTION 😚🤌 But you have to admit that it is truly heartbreaking, especially if Spamtons your favorite character. (Spoiler Warning: He’s my favorite character 🥲) I love how the creator’s (all those involved in making the Salt Route) managed to keep Spamton in character yet show subtle details of it slowly breaking away as the game progressed. This especially shows after *YOU* order Spamton to…. “Cancel” the blue Addison’s Life Subscription… Spamton KNEW something was up, because- well… the two of you were killing everyone. So, in order to keep Spamton by your side, the player manipulated him by claiming it’s all just to “Help” him find his keys. I think, if he didn’t trust you enough, Spamton would’ve just run away after you killed the Blue Addison, instead of being dragged around. At that point, the game revealed how Spamton is now just another pawn like Noelle. This becomes evident when you equip him with the thorn ring, and grab him by the [[Silly Strings]] in battle. What takes the cake that tops off the whole AU is the ending. After Spamton asks you if he made you proud, no matter how many times it chose YES, Spamton kept asking. Then ends it off with: “I guess it’s true when they said you can’t please everyone” The question was to the *PLAYER* and it was to show that no matter what happens or how “strong” the two become, the player will never be satisfied. It’s sorta like a mixture of Snowgrave but also Sans theme song Megalomania Megalomania/Megalomaniac: A person with an extreme obsession with *POWER* (Or in this case strength) The more LOVE you gained, the easier it becomes to distance yourself. The stronger you grew, the easier it became to manipulate and abuse Spamton. I’m both disappointed and relieved that this isn’t apart of the canon game. It would be interesting for players to mess with the choices like: Not giving Spamton the *SPARE KEY* or choosing different dialogues. But it would be gut wrenching to watch gameplays of people choosing the Salt Route and seeing Spamton get the living [[#%&@]] beaten out of him… (That’s all for my rant… sorry for making it so long 😅)

I just got to thinking... There were multiple prompts to back out of the Salt Route, right? Well, I was thinking of what would happen if you don't give Spamton your SPARE key.
He'd be convinced that he doesn't need a spare key, and it would branch into the Salesman Route, where you can still spare enemies, ask around on what happened to his keys, and help him reconcile with the Addisons along the way.
Oh dear, I would play the HECK out of that route.

Queen's fight was terrifying.
She dropped her usual chatty, memey self and doesn't speak at ALL during the fight, as well as Spamton's health rapidly depleting and Queen's stern glare instead of her patient smile.
This idea was absolutely AMAZING too. I would LOVE and could definitely see something similar with Jevil in Chapter 1, at the end taking ultimate vengeance against King for locking him up.

I honestly love the fact this was rendered on a potato. It shows you don't need new devices to deliver a substantial experience, and it makes me feel better about making videos on my own PC, which is over 12 years old at this point.
It added charm. A lot of charm. All it was missing was Unregistered Hypercam 2.
It actually somewhat adds to it in another way too. Some glitches were probably from the craptop, but since they only really start going when you recruit Mr. [Wild Prizes!], which fits really well. Don't get why it's available in higher resolutions than that of my actually good laptop if it's from a craptop, though.

Dang, this makes Snowgrave look subtle. In Snowgrave, you had Noelle turn Berdly, a kid she didn't even like that much, into an ice cube and left her wondering if it was a dream or not.
Salt, and you don't end at forcing Spamton to genocide his own people murder his friend, cold blood, in the middle of a hug. You make him continue on until everyone is dead, put him on a new set of strings, beat him til his teeth fall out, commit regicide, and then admit you used him the whole time while he goes home to sit in his trash dump and live the rest of his remaining days with the guilt of what he was forced to do. Salt melts snow, and I think I see why now.

What? Berdly was literally Noelle's best friend lmao. Sure he was a jackass but she doesn't really know Susie despite having a crush on her and she's estranged from Kris, she even mentions that Berdly is generally nice when it's just the two of them.
Snowgrave Route is absolutely awful. I'd say this might be the less bad route just because well... As bad as it is, Spamton does deserve it a lot more than Noelle. After all, he was perfectly willing to have this be her fate. Not so nice when the shoe's on the other foot.

i actually really like how this interpretation goes. spamton never drops his personality the entire time, no matter what - he's always on the border between positive and serious, never breaking character. the route is instead formed around him, and instead of breaking his tone to fit the idea, he's given no choice in the matter. he's not woobified much here, he's the same old spam.

Something about this route has always seemed almost... Karmic? I mean obviously nobody deserves what happens in this route, but it's an interesting parallel to Snowgrave. Spamton was so willing to let Kris be a puppet, to let Noelle be manipulated and tortured with a device he gave the player. And yet in this route... Sure their relationship isn't perfect but she's willing to sacrifice herself in the normal route to ensure Berdly's safety.
Anyway my point is, that Spamton was evil already before this route- and even if he doesn't deserve all this, he certainly deserves it more than Noelle deserved snowgrave.

Right now, a lot of his text at the start feels like "He says this in his shop! Quirky!!"

Well thanks! It took me around 6 months I think to complete dis, it was one of them things I wanted to make immediately after hearing about the original Salt Route posts just cause of how believable it sounded in terms of being some weird, secret route (morso than SnowGrave somehow)
man this thing is really fire, spamton is very in character, very dark, sad and editing is also very good, sometimes it is kinda off and sounds get a bit delayed but other than that i really liked this. hope this video will get the attention it deserves one day

The fact you were somehow able to mod the game itself, and add additional animations for this is pretty impressive. This is great for a fully conceptualized Salt Route. Definitely helps lay the “blueprints” for how a playable game could possibly go. Great work on this, I can’t imagine how much time you spent on this.

oh my god this is absolutely amazing, this video is horrifying and I love it. you managed to make me feel even more sorry for poor spamton than the actual game did. the whole thing just feels so creepypasta like and uncanny, and those animations of spamton on a black background asking for his keys and getting beaten up are really haunting. I honestly really hope future chapter's weird routes get as dark as this because this is an amazing concept that you have turned into a full video, and the end product is amazing. it's insane to think something this terrifying and well made could come from one person's dream. great job making this, I don't know what you used to make it but it literally looks just like gameplay, and the stuttery-ness of the video gives me huge 2000s internet creepypasta vibes.

The creativity uses for Dreams is very understated
The lag makes this feel like a content leak, and that adds to the fever dream feeling. Also just genuinely a great mod to the game, best ive seen from a technical standpoint.

this has also got me considering doing another recreation, maybe one of the smaller scenes I wrote way back when (probably one of the earlier ones that are a bit more upbeat), but I'd need the right tools for the job given how tough it was making the first two frame by frame. if you don't mind me asking, what did you end up using to put this together?
@@kibbeh I recorded my Deltarune gameplay (aside from the addison fight which was completely animated) and then turned the recording into a gif file so I could draw over it in aesprite (with spamton's attacks, cutscenes and new dialogue all being drawn in).
Then I put the edited gif recordings over the regular recordings and tried to add sound for dialogue and other things that weren't in the regular recording.
Hope that helped!, I would love to see what you do if you ever end up making something new!
The shop discussion was good overall, but I always thought of the lost keys as the Keygen. It would then make sense why Spam would need them so badly and why he never gets Neo - can't get in the basement without it.
I wouldn't have had the Keygen be buyable, but other than that, this is a really good creation of this cursed route so far.
The scene of Spamton being ruthlessly hurt and broke me inside a little, even if he isn't exactly the best guy, that hurt to watch and I almost teared up, even if there was no animation. That was sad and horrifying, but maybe that's my PTSD. Either way, this was phenomenal, even if it had it's flaws. I loved this.

Here's my interpretation: the salt isn't normal salt. To a lightner, it would appear like a clump of salt (I know it's just big so that it can actually be seen, but...) but to darkners, specifically computer/ai based ones, it's different. It can mess with them in weird ways when in proximity of them, like how Spamton suddenly felt like he needed to look for his keys. It might just affect Spamton's species, or it might also extend to Queen, Swatch, and (if you don't think Spamton is one) the Addisons.
Kris just doesn't spend enough time around anyone but Spamton to mess with anyone else's AI. (As for Queen, well, she may be younger than Spamton, which in computers can mean better performance, and Spamton's already so glitchy as to probably make him pretty vulnerable to this kind of thing.)

This entire concept video evoked the unnerving wrongness I felt when I first encountered Spamton in my first playthrough and kinda made me feel even more uneasy as the route continued with Spamton trying to get back into his usual salesman persona as a way to cope with what's going on along with his missing keys. The very scuffed and lagging recording, stuttering and absent audio, the occasionally odd scaling of some of the sprites and rough animation really add to this really weird and unnerving feeling throughout the entire route and the roughness of it all gives it a weird dream-like feel which is very fitting considering the entire salt route was spawned from the AU Creator's dream. Also really impressed that managed to get a lot of Queen's unused attacks to work during the battle and the slight flashing of blue and the random subtle size change of the screen during the battle adds to the dream-like feeling I mentioned earlier. Also I really like how you acknowledged Lancer being in Kris' spacious pants hole. People tend to forget that he's there. Him witnessing the hilariously tragic death of Rouxls Kaard and finally turning to stone was also rather mortifying and a bit funny.
it's so eerie how when you exit berdly's fight area (after entering the manhole), the music is just gone and someone's face shows momentarily on the screen instead of it doing the normal fade animation that you get when changing rooms

I think i have very small personal nitpicks with this kind of au just because I can't imagine a route where Rouxls is killed off and Kris actually does direct murder (at least from what we have in canon so far). But despite that it's actually really really interesting and this concept was well done. Like others said, it really does feel straight out of a creepypasta and its actually well written and disturbing. Spamton's very in-character for the most part and the details like changing the pop-ups to relate to the keys was such a nice detail. So glad some content for this AU was made like this. It's been personally getting me thru the lack of new chapters/official content. This is actually my first real introduction to the AU route as well :) Nice job!

Seeing this just made me realize that if it's possible to get gems like this from someone's dreams of an alternate route, then damn, that's quite the dedication to seeing this thing be fulfilled (even when it's just a route that softlocks you at the end of it). Took me on quite a trip to see the original inspiration for this video, and seeing this certainly gave me the creeps (even with the unintended lag).
I am a little curious as to why there's two instances of mysterious faces hidden in the video (one at 37.02 and the other at 1:10:12 - might need to pause and use the comma key to rewind a few frames for reference). The second face clearly seems to be Gaster's face (why he's smiling is something I probably don't wanna think about given this whole route is the Spamton equivalent of the Snowgrave route), but I'm not sure whose face it is at the first instance. Is it even resembling a face, or is it just something solely made for this video alone? It is just odd that these are just placed there (one even there just for a few milliseconds while another fades in before going back to the scene at hand), but I can't help wondering what they mean, context and all.
Either way, this was a great video (for both my curious mind and the feels that I have for this route's Spamton ;-; )

Fun fact: “Salt” is a term used in computer science. Essentially, passwords aren’t stored in plaintext, but instead encrypted, and encrypted passwords are called “hashes”. “Salt” is essentially a random number that is added/multiplied/etc to the “hash” to make it harder to crack. (Unless the salt and hash are stored in the same space, in which case, it’s still pretty easy).
Given that the Queen’s mansion is guarded by [High Quality Encryption] that is broken by the KEYGEN, it actually kind of makes sense that salt is needed for Spamton’s keys to exist.

hey also id just like to say I LOVE THIS MORE THEN ANYTHING. Just a suggestion as for a plothole in your story. Now it's your take with your ideas so I'm in no way demanding this be canon to it but a reason behind darkners being able to be killed is because when the Cyber World is created it runs on code. That code doesn't account for Spamton ever joining under any normal circumstances. Thus all Systems are bypassed allowing darkners to be killed. The way you fleshed out concepts really impressed me and actually im working on my own Salt route inspired deltarune AU titled "Garbage Collector" that essentially takes concepts from both snowgrave and salt but does it with Berdley. Id love to share some of it w you if youd like and im more just exited at such a talented creator

I had absolutely no idea about what this was, heard of it from another comment not even related to this, now that ive found it, this is incredible. It gives creepypasta vibes as another comment said. But as another comment said, i feel like the KEYGEN is what shouldve been the missing key, since no NEO body, no becoming god, etc. But even if it wasnt, im kind of dissapointed that spamton had no chance to become NEO in this route due to a giant pile of salt which couldve probably been pushed over with ease.

To start, I initially watched this video like 2 days after it came out. So I am commenting very much later(and I have rewatched/revisited a few times since then), but its cool ;)
I remember seeing all the proto salt route concept videos you made before this one (which are now in the salt playlist) and being pumped and curious about the full video and salt route in general since these videos were the first that I saw that described about it more; and when I figured you released this video, I saved it, then watched it later with headphones on for the best Salt Route experience. And for being your first major video (1 hour and 35 minutes is movie length Mr. JQR!) and for ALSO being an older version, I certainly am impressed, filled with dread, and got [[100% Satisfaction guaranteed]]. This video is also amazing in the fact that you pretty much did everything that wasn’t the music listed, impressive! While others have said that they don’t like the lag/glitches/visual and audio issues that arrived from your equipment’s circumstances, I personally found those things VERY effective for this experience and adds something that is indeed unique. But perhaps that comes from me being able to… suspend disbelief, plus experience from watching FNAF and exe games or the like. I do enjoy the lag, but it’s good that you are finding ways and looking towards reducing those issues too.
So many details are here and I love them. From all the pixel art, those 3 hidden pictures of:

Noelle and those guys reacting to us picking up the salt, all of spamton’s attacks and battle animations being random and funny, that one pipis phone attack leaving a pile of pipis on the ground at 46:28, nubert being worried and going away, the egg disappearing from the key items (NOOOO), the swatchling seeing Spamton using heartbreaker for the first time in the trash alley, Spamton affecting the poppup messages and being the only icon during Queen’s final fight (would have loved to see our beloved Everyman appearance in both of those things ;) ), Spamton wearing Noelle’s box, and that like “title sequence” of Spamton and Kris walking across the bridge with the Salt Route theme are so cool and appreciated. For the others not mentioned, just to let you know I have noticed them too.
My favorite detail about this video which I’ve noticed that others haven’t mention yet (in 7 months no less, woah!) is that when rouxls Kaard appears, along with his theme which is a good tension-breaker btw at least for me, his arm and leg have been partially turned to stone with his left arm being completely turned to stone and his left leg being partially stone-ified, that ain’t in the normal game. This detail makes his appearance though so sad too even with him having the best buff of having two accents in this route; he wants a fun challenge even with the fact that he probably realizes that he will turn into a statue soon, and then the hammer drops when the option to accept Rouxls’ challenge is taken away and replaced with those triple dots. The result? Mr. Kaard gets heartbroken, and so does my heart too *sniff* (this moment hits harder for me because the way you… or the player immediately goes to that option when it’s fully formed is something that I would have done and would have wanted to choose too). Anyway, that’s my favorite detail, so cool and emotional too… when you think about it.
When I first watched this, and I even still think this too, my impression of the story you told in this video lead me to a point/conclusion about Kris and the soul(or player) that I found to be super interesting and unique too. Unlike what other people like to say and different from what Deltatraveler is doing, I found the presentation of how Kris and the player/soul act from the dialogue and Kris’ different battle sprite after the “turning point” (I’ll get to that in a bit) to show that in this route, Kris forces and wants the route to proceed to its endgame and ultimately shatters Spamton’s person in a sick way of ultimate revenge on the player/soul. It’s like this route kind of gives us a view of how the soul and Kris would be when they finally “work” together or fully “merged”, but the horror to the player is that they can’t choose what they want but can only properly act if their actions agree with what Kris wants and in this route, Kris wants to express how much he hates being a puppet even if it means killing just a few more people and telling Spamton that they only used him like an object because it won’t matter in the end with the ending being a softlock, an inescapable prison. The “Turning Point” that leads me to this impression is the combined scene of Kris trying to throw away the soul(the player) and then the “fight” which leads to using heartbreaker on the blue Addison because you are missing your [[SPARE]] key and the following aftermath when Kris (yes, Kris) unprompted punches Spamton and rips out his strings. When Kris’ most desperate action of removing his own soul in the dark world in front of Spamton doesn’t work, Kris realizes something. This “Turning Point” is sealed (well to me) with Kris’ different battle sprite where he is limp and stiff and stabs with the sword quite lazily too like Kris is actively not trying so the soul/player take up the duty of controlling the body during battles and thus the soul has to deal with a limp human and doing attacks that will be effective. Since Kris is not doing much during battles, he uses the extra energy to say… purposefully execute the swatchling when Queen is watching(quite interesting that you made it so you end the fight by fighting an not using heartbreaker), taking advantage of the player choosing “…” (basically choosing to do “nothing” but Kris often talks when this option is chosen, base game example: Kris asks Susie about the Apple shampoo in post Ch. 2) to use heartbreaker on Rouxls and to make both the player and Kris to pound and wail on Spamton so hard that they physically break him (I tried counting, I got 37 hits, give or take a few). I quite enjoy the impression I got from your video, and whether I am right or wrong about how you wanted to tell this story, it shows something that is different from what others, especially deltatraveler, say which is that the soul is pure evil during these disturbing routes and that difference is that it shows that Kris is, well, human and he can be very desperate and petty when they both (Kris and Player) realize that the path they found themselves on will lead to nothing. And since Kris figures out that the end of this salty journey is soon, he decides to express his very repressed feelings about your control by ensuring that you can’t escape it and by breaking the one thing that may bring some joy, no matter how bleak, the other puppet Spamton.
First impressions are important, so this one I got was an idea that very much stuck with me and I quite enjoyed because it was something different(especially when the video was released in May) and quite thought provoking too. Even if it’s totally different from what you tried to tell, just know that you have quite the talent for storytelling and details. (Btw, I realized this paragraph could be summed up by saying that Kris gets really SALTY in this route hehe).
(Btw, I know Kris is definitely preferred to be non-binary, but I used male pronouns in the previous paragraph to avoid confusing sentences because I talk about both Kris and the player/soul.)
To end, This Deltarune Salt Route concept is a unique and quite unnerving, funny, dread-inducing, and a [[Spamton approved product!]] video you have made JQR. Also, Deltatraveler was mentioned twice in this comment, nice (will appear again in another comment on another video, you might know JQR ;) ). I loved it very much and will be an experience that I will cherish. Thank you JQR.
Oh, and I would like to add that all of Spamton’s dialogue is very fitting for this route and is fun, then creepy, then saddening to see. Plus, the way the video is presented makes it feel like watching a strange version of Deltarune Chapter 2 is awesome and works with how the Salt Route was created, makes it feel dreamlike especially with the pixel art sections.

I'm glad you enjoyed this video, it was definitely one of the bigger videos I made when I first started out (you can tell cause of the bazillion secrets and stuff I tried to fit in this, ha ha) so it's cool to see that you're so understanding of it, I also think that your take on the lore of this is certainly interesting and unique compared to what I've heard from everyone else.
Looking back at this I can also sorta see the appeal of the lag and jank video, like you said, gives off some real creepypasta vibes, maybe this style will make a return at some point but I'm not really sure.
Oh yeah also you are right about rouxls being half stone! I think you might actually be the first one to actually point that out! His leg was obscured by the boat and his hand kinda had the same colour to his body so I can see why people may not have noticed it, anyway good job on that!
In closing, I'm happy that you had a good time watching this, it might not hold up well now in the eyes of many, but still. Glad you enjoyed it! And who knows maybe this'll get a remake in the future (I've certainly been thinking about it!)

If there was one critique I would give, albeit a very personal thing, it would be about Queen’s new mannerism at the end. The fight is great, the music is awesome, the Final Attack is crazy, but Queen being completely silent(except for the fist slam on the chair lol), while effective, I am not fond of because I find it… predictable, and a bit cheap too. Having Queen saying one thing only amidst the flow of “…” would be something I would like, something short and either bleak and apologetic towards Spamton or very hardcore like “even the trash heap is too good for you”. Though, Queen being silent is part of the original dream/concept and I do respect you for that. Thanks again JQR!

I do think your criticisms about the Queen fight are quite valid, her being completely silent throughout the fight is so unlike her (and I only really did it since it was mentioned in the post, like you said), I could've definitely adapted that better since that part in particular felt lack-luster, maybe I could have tried to blend her being angry and her cannon personality a bit better, lines like "Even The Trash Heap Is Too Good For You" could have had the potential to enrich the battle like you suggested, in any case thanks for being honest about it!

Like you took a literal broken man *puppet* and both manipulated and abused him. Even Kris tried to stop the route mid-way by taking out their own soul and (attempt) run away.
The creator of the Salt Route *REALLY* looked at Spamton, who is already at rock bottom, threw down a shovel and said: “…Start Digging…”
Don’t get me wrong the gameplay (animation?) and AU itself is just *Chef Kiss* PERFECTION 😚🤌 But you have to admit that it is truly heartbreaking, especially if Spamtons your favorite character.

I love how the creator’s (all those involved in making the Salt Route) managed to keep Spamton in character yet show subtle details of it slowly breaking away as the game progressed. This especially shows after *YOU* order Spamton to…. “Cancel” the blue Addison’s Life Subscription…
Spamton KNEW something was up, because- well… the two of you were killing everyone. So, in order to keep Spamton by your side, the player manipulated him by claiming it’s all just to “Help” him find his keys.
I think, if he didn’t trust you enough, Spamton would’ve just run away after you killed the Blue Addison, instead of being dragged around. At that point, the game revealed how Spamton is now just another pawn like Noelle. This becomes evident when you equip him with the thorn ring, and grab him by the [[Silly Strings]] in battle.
What takes the cake that tops off the whole AU is the ending. After Spamton asks you if he made you proud, no matter how many times it chose YES, Spamton kept asking. Then ends it off with: “I guess it’s true when they said you can’t please everyone”
The question was to the *PLAYER* and it was to show that no matter what happens or how “strong” the two become, the player will never be satisfied.
It’s sorta like a mixture of Snowgrave but also Sans theme song Megalomania

The more LOVE you gained, the easier it becomes to distance yourself. The stronger you grew, the easier it became to manipulate and abuse Spamton.
I’m both disappointed and relieved that this isn’t apart of the canon game. It would be interesting for players to mess with the choices like: Not giving Spamton the *SPARE KEY* or choosing different dialogues. But it would be gut wrenching to watch gameplays of people choosing the Salt Route and seeing Spamton get the living [[#%&@]] beaten out of him…
