I really appreciate your viewpoints! Thank you! My concern is that a university is an academic institution. I don't send my sons to the BYU educational system for their social and emotional learning. I feel this is to be done in the home where we are taught how to include others or handle those times when we all have felt excluded. This is further to be taught through the gospel of Jesus Christ. I am concerned we are not developing emotionally resilient young adults. BYU University system is a place for academic learning and for preparing students to obtain knowledge, critically think and to achieve career goals. The office of belonging is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints! Thank you.

And most of the people calling for equity and inclusion are totally for this attitude towards the unvaccinated. Honestly thise who claim to be the most tolerant are the least tolerant at all. I didn’t say this yesterday on your video about the speech given, but after watching it, I feel like I saw the pure power and authority and expression of the priesthood.
That speech is the kind of speech I imagine Joseph Smith received when he was chastened by the Lord for 3.5 hours.
A love I cannot yet duplicate was blinding in the 40 minute speech.
I would love if Andrew could/would talk about what it was like to be in those moments.
I found it very interesting that Elder Holland would have his friend present as he dealt with some of the churches laundering duties at BYU.
What does Andrew think of the mission of the school and how the troubles presented affect its performance?
What of the staff that may have felt the piercing of the words Elder Holland spoke? Would they speak of their mistakes, as Alma did, to reclaim some few whom they led astray?
If Elder Holland feels so deeply about BYU, then how deeply must the Lord feel about each of us?
Elder Holland set a standard for me to seek to obtain.
I hope others felt the same thing.

The word safe means freedom from threats, whether it be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. So, to see a need to create a safe space is to acknowledge there is a threat to these students and the action should be to address the threat, not to hide the students from it while the threat continues unabated.

These brave warriors gave their lives so that students at BYU can have their save places. So they can complain about how hard their lives are. How unjust America and Americans are. These few students and liberal faculty members should look at Afganistan and see what life would be like in America if we become a Marist/Communist Country. You think it bad now? Look again. The purpose of the office seems fine, but it seems to be the nature of most institutions that once they have some power, they want to grow and expand their power. And the individuals within it will still be in perfect and self-serving. So while I think this will be far less problematic than similar offices in other institutions, it's still not going to be perfect (though if perfect is our standard, everything and everyone falls short of that save Christ himself).
If there are problems with discrimination in a lack of belonging, that problem exists in the heart of individuals. And other than continuing to preach the gospel, no top-down approach is going to address the real causes.
On the whole this still may be a good thing, just to show the world that we are willing to extend an olive branch and that our goals are for unity of the whole human race, can we back that up with our actions.

There are positive and negative prejudices just as there are positive and negative experiences. Like begets like. To me, the only bad prejudices are those that do not reflect reallity very well or at all. Probably the biggest problem with prejudices in general comes about when they are over-relied upon. People follow prejudices when they have other more reliable ways to assess individual people, animals, things, and situations.

@@karyncurr28 It may go back to the time when President Young declared me to be a menace to the community for being over the age of 25 and not married. Prejudices are harder to recognise when you are not the object of negative prejudices. As a family woman, you would be very much less apt to notice the way that young single adults are made to feel when they are denied a temple recommend through no fault of their own just because they are single or all of the other numerous slights that they are habitually the victims of. You may have not even noticed single people at all.
Have you ever noticed that almost everyone who rises to positions within bishoprics and stake presidencies or higher levels are family men? What does it take to become a family man and remain one? Among many other things, it takes gobs of money. If a man does not have at least the appearance of one day becoming so pecunious as to be able to support a family in modern times, he is not part of the LDS girl's dream of family and children. Then he will be a dating game reject. Non-LDS women will reject him for being LDS.
Now think back to the story of the Zoramites in the 28tjh and 29th chapters of the Book of Alma. That story, just like every other part of the Book of Mormon, was prophetically selected to benefit us. The story of the Zoramites is a case in point. Single people are the latter day poor Zoramites of latter day Zion. Their talents and their virtues are overlooked when an opening occurs to be filled. I have frequently seen deadbeats and egocentric narcissists appointed to positions based on nothing save for money, family, and career status. i found that very painfully and starkly obvious in a rural small town environment where I knew everyone and knew that some of those appointees had nothing going for them except money and family.

2:25- For crying out loud, the report clearly says, "Our discussion uses a *placeholder* name for this central office, the Office of Diversity and Belonging. If the recommendation is adopted, naming the office would be an important point of discussion." This is not a suggestion, and it is dishonest to claim otherwise.
8:45- Why are you framing this dishonestly? The committee did not recommend a mission statement for the proposed office.
10:20- Again, this is a dishonest claim. The report is extraordinarily clear that this was a placeholder name. Why isn't this video?
14:15- This is not what the report describes. This is another dishonest claim.
15:35- The committee does not once discuss lowering standards for university admission. *Again,* this is a dishonest claim.
17:15- Oh. my. gosh. The report literally says, "To be clear, this recommendation is not intended to isolate, segregate, or silo BIPOC students. Rather, ensuring available gathering space would serve to offer critical social connections for BIPOC and other underrepresented students free of the burdens of feeling isolated and otherized." They offer examples of how other universities have done something like this, with links. This was a stated desire of students: "[N]umerous BIPOC students from our focus groups advocated for a dedicated gathering space to facilitate connection and belonging." It's like you didn't bother to read beyond the executive summary.

BYU "Office Of Belonging" WOW! It took till now to get BYU understanding the meaning of belonging? They do seem a little SLOW to me. I was about 13 when I started being friends with the Catholic kid in my neighborhood (no other kids in the neighborhood would play with the one who was not LDS.) NOW ya put up an office? Slow, and it shouldn't be praised. This is way easier than elementary grade smarts. Grow up.

I have come to realize "gay" members of the church fel like the odd man out. And I feel for them. However, I also feel that their constant need for validation tiresome. A family member, who's "out", regularly posts to social media stuff critical of the church and the Brethren. But, moreover he daily posts stuff spotlighting himself and his lifestyle. It's narcissism on a grand scale. And I've noticed this before with other gay men.
I also have a friend who never expresses his orientation, though I suspect he's gay. He just serves and goes forward in life without fuss.
I would like to talk to this particular family member about his constant harping, but that would blow up. So I can either unfriend him on FB or just endure.
