    Important note about train tickets: You can't buy tickets from the train, so you have to buy them before you board the train.

    • @markushelenius169

      Yes, that's true about in commuter trains and in regional trains. In long distance trains (express, IC, pendolino) you can always buy a ticket from the conductor. BUT: Paying card is required, they can't accept cash.

    We had good experiences with trains in Finland this summer. We took the night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi and it was super comfortable. Left at 11pm and arrived around 11am. The bunk beds were surprisingly comfortable! Also, we took the train when we first arrived at the airport to downtown Helsinki, and we even arrived in the early morning hours. Thank you again for the video.

    My niece and her family has lived in Helsinki for 5 years. If they could they said they would live there forever. Her kids go to an international school. Since living their I think they said they have been to 38 countries so far.They also have been to quite a few of their favorite countries several times different areas.

    Generally very interesting, but surely you should have mentioned that if you are doing a lot of train travelling in Finland you should buy an Interrail pass. According to the current European Rail Timetable a first class 8 days in one month pass costs 305 Euros.

    in the video where you mention the red houses, often those houses were railway workers'
    houses. Today vr has sold those houses, they are no longer inhabited by railway workers. The houses are recognizable by their red color and they have a certain style, usually a small window that is set in a certain way. Time stamp in the video : 6.28

    • @herrakaarme
      @herrakaarme 2 роки тому +2

      Red houses still are and also used to be highly popular because the colour was easy to get from hematite and other iron oxides. The pigment has been in use since the stone age. It's undoubtedly one of the first paints with a striking colour that common people could afford to use. What you mostly see from a train is wilderness or countryside. Red houses are everywhere. It's not specific for VR. In fact VR very much like to use yellow paint as well.

    5:35 referencing train service in the US is a low bar. Not only are they regularly running late but, the carriers for many of the services really don’t have much regard for on-time performance. (I.e.: Amtrak, NJ Transit)
    Great presentation though. Thank you.

    Love the masks on the statues at 5:57!

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 2 роки тому +8

      They are actually also used as the mascots of the railway. Like they are originally just the door guardian statues of the Helsinki central railway station called simply "the lantern bearers". However like couple decades ago VR realised "hey these figures make for good official mascots". So now they are the "The stone men", the official mascots of VR. They appear as animated characters in VR ads, information videos and VR timetable prints and various pamphlets. Also the statues get regularly specially dressed for various occasions. Stuff like during big sporting events they sport Team Finland scarfs or shirts.
      During pandemic, well VR instituted policy of wearing masks on the trains. So the Stone Men also wear masks to remind and encourage mask wearing. I think they also did an PSA video in the beginning of pandemic of animated Stone Men reminding people to care for fellow passengers and train staff by wearing masks.
