Onewheel GT S-Series Goes Fast - But How Far?

  • How does the Onewheel GT S-Series perform for commuters? With less range than the original GT, is range anxiety back again? How does it feel going 25 mph on a Onewheel? Are the lowboy footpads worth it?
    My new Onewheel GT-S Series is here, and I took it out for a ride while running late for an appointment with my barber. It was a good thing I had the fastest Onewheel, the Onewheel GT-S Series to get me there. I felt 25 mph haptic buzz, and the power of its torque, during the ride.
    A review and comparison to the original Onewheel GT is coming soon. Watch this video for my early impressions.
    Here I'm riding in Flow as a ~240 lbs rider. The tire's PSI was increased for extra speed to 24 PSI. I'm using the standard lowboy footpads, and the GT S-Series Performance Treaded Tire.

    Bro. Loved the way you did this review! I just got a GT (upgrade from OG Pint) and I’m loving the crazy range - plus going 20 MPH is fast enough for me. I haven’t hit haptic buzz yet, so it just all around feels like a safe board to ride.

      Good choice! The GT-S Series feels disappointing in the range department, but it’s a nice ride. I don’t think it’s good to have as your only board if you rely on it for commuting and exploring. I went to a bike party yesterday and had to go home early to charge my wheel.

    You riding through Home Depot reminds me of the times when I would ride a skateboard through a local grocery store Plaza. I felt like a hoodlum, but watching you with your one wheel makes me think about how classy you are compared to 13 year old me on a skateboard 😂
    I’m glad for your safety. Picking up that kind of speed is definitely no joke. You have a helmet, but I would want some elbow and kneepads hahaha

    • @followdon
      @followdon  7 місяців тому

      Skateboarders are the coolest. Though I’m sure you were no hoodlum, I hope in my old age I don’t present like a 13-year-old 😂
      Whenever I have a new board, I have to give it time and find out how it will treat me before I push it. I’m afraid I’m going to hedonically adapt to riding 23-25 miles per hour soon 🫣
      Though I have 10,000+ miles of Onewheel experience, I might need extra safety gear for this one.

    Love the reality of this video (when we’re in a hurry, everything’s a “come on, bro…” moment haha)!
    Based on your battery usage on the way to your barber, you’d have gotten about 9.64 miles if you had used a full battery at that pace. Based on how you rode on the way back, you brought your total usage estimate up to about 12.44 miles on a full battery (you must have been more casual or aerodynamic on the way back haha).
    At 171 lbs, I’ve been averaging about 11.4 miles per full charge over my first 5 cycles, but that’s been a series of smaller rides rather than one official range test. Hoping to see my number come up a bit when I do a real full ride. If it doesn’t, it might be back to the OG GT for me (I’d rather have range than torque).
    Keep it up, Don! 🤙🏼⚡️💯

    • @followdon
      @followdon  6 місяців тому +1

      I appreciate this, man! You’re exactly right. On the way back I was far more casual and I took different routes just to extend the ride.
      I just completed a full range test from 100 down to 10 percent of the battery exploring the DC monuments. With that ride, I still ended up getting less than the 16 mph advertised range. I wasn’t riding with any sense of urgency - just riding in the way that I like to.
      I upgraded to the GT from the XR, and besides the higher stable top speed, I loved the leave your charger at home range. It seems like going from GT to GT S, I have to be more range and battery sensitive again.
      I’m going to do a similar ride on the GT to see what type of range I get on a 2 year old battery.

    Bruh, you weigh 237 pounds AND rode it down to 14%?!?!?! That's a great testimony to the board. I'm 135 pounds and on hills am wary with the GT at 50%. Nosedives are terrible, so my NUMBER ONE piece of advice for fellow riders is to keep an eye on their app and battery percentage to know their safety zone for the board nose diving at low power. Thanks for the video.

    • @followdon
      @followdon  5 місяців тому +1

      That’s good advice!
      I’m definitely enjoying the board. I will make a video with my updated thoughts soon. What’s funny is I didn’t worry much about nosedives on the GT. As an upgrade from the XR, the ceiling for performance felt much higher. The board felt more stable. The GT S is definitely another big leap in performance and safety. But I don’t get as much range. The good thing is, I find that most of my round trips don’t require more than what the GT S gives me. I’ve only had one walk of shame experience so far on a multi-segment trip.

    • @followdon
      @followdon  7 місяців тому

      I didn’t have any problems with what the GT offered up until it stopped working (burnt motor plug, fried motor, and controller). I bought the GT-S to have an alternative board while my GT was being fixed (15-day turnaround for Future Motion to repair it with 13 days for shipping from DC to CA and back) and to minimize my downtime if something happens in the future.
      For the GT, I got used to using charge to 90. I would get regeneration warnings on the first block after leaving home when I charged to 100. With the GT-S, I almost immediately lose 2%, so I charge 100 percent, helping with the range. More to come in my 100-ish mile review.

    i was gonna get a gt, then the gt-s was teased the day i went to their website. so i was gonna get the gt-s, but i've been waiting to pull the trigger to see what happens on black friday. the more i've waited, the more I'm thinking i dont want this board. i've had my xr since '18, so im kinda itching to upgrade, but 3300 is to much money for 16 miles at 25 mph. and now i'm questioning if the gt is really a come up from the xr... seems like the xr is most peoples favorite fm board. care to share your thoughts?

    • @followdon
      @followdon  7 місяців тому +2

      The GT was a significant upgrade from the XR for me. It has “leave the charger at home” range, is much more stable at speed, and has more torque to help heavier riders like myself get up hills and avoid nosedives. I will be selling my XR.
      Black Friday through Cyber Monday deals will likely bring back launch day bundles and accessories will likely be 25% off.
      Each board solves its own problem. Though I rode the OG Pint for a couple of years, I can’t really recommend it to anyone. Lowest speed and range. Maybe a good gift for a child (though it would be safer to put them on a board with more performance headroom).
      XRs can’t be purchased new. But there are years of accessories and modifications created for them that people enjoy. They sit lower than the GT. But today, the GT has lowering kits and the 5” MTEs from The Float Life.
      GT has the best balance of range and speed. The GT-S is just a fast board with more torque to keep you upright. But the range is a downer. You’ll want to bring your charger if you plan to ride for a while.

      The GT’s leave your charger at home range is more valuable to me than the speed and the torque on the GT-S Series. I hate having range anxiety and I dislike having to charge on the go.

      I'm glad you're okay! Which board were you riding? On the GT-S Series, you can confidently ride at 23 mph, but if you hit a bump you don't expect, I can imagine the results would be the same. I think I'm going to invest in more safety gear, because a fast board makes me want to ride faster.

    👍👍video, FM overpriced their boards when they introduced the gt series & gt-s is insanely overpriced, also the issues they have with sensors and cut outs, non user replaceable battery and electronics without bricking board, non standard 6.5” proprietary wheel size with less tire sidewall, issues with repair customer service without charging high prices many times to their customers when issues were faulty build quality or telling customers tuff luck, now they are trying to stifle competition in market with lawsuits, keep fun-wheeling man

    • @followdon

      I think $3,200 was very steep for the GT S-Series. And it stung to see FM discount it on Black Friday after us early adopters paid full price.

    You really don’t think the motor dying has anything to do with the firmware update changing the way the motor operates? Honestly hella sus, the new firmware seems hella buggy and not designed correctly. For example switching apex one time for me caused non stop haptic buzz

    • @followdon
      @followdon  7 місяців тому +1

      It does seem sus. Perhaps with more data from the community, we can more confidently point to the update as the issue. I would love for FM to own up to it and give my $780.81 back.

      That would be a good call. But a few things that keep me away:
      1. The gear I’d need to wear to enjoy the speed.

    Something about OneWheel owners and it's cult following that gets me. One of the few group of PEV consumers that stand behind the company (FM) despite awful business practices. With the GTS coming this further solidifies how close-minded OneWheelers are.

    • @jamaal.g6891
      @jamaal.g6891 7 місяців тому

      Don, love the content. I am an OG pint rider & I think if you were looking for recommendations it’s time to explore EUC. The EUC range is worlds better, so is the option for suspension. Imo a OW over 20mph requires more safety gear. Really surprised at the lack of range.

    • @followdon
      @followdon  7 місяців тому

      @jamaal.g6891 Hey, Jamaal! I also started my Onewheel journey on the OG Pint. I only recently sold it when I had too many boards in the house.
      I’m going to invest in wrist guards, at minimum. Maybe an armored jacket or pants for winter rides nearing 25 mph.
      My PEV budget is blown now, but I’ll consider other options, like EUC, in the future.
      I am disappointed with the range for sure.
      Thanks for the compliment, the suggestion, and thank you for watching!

      Have you given any thought to a Floatwheel? As you said it’s more about lifestyle preference. I still love my Pint but definitely thinking of getting a Floatwheel due to the cost/range/torque. My PEV budget is inflated too 😂

    why not just buy an ebike instead? or build your own? they seem objectively better in every technical aspect

    • @followdon
      @followdon  7 місяців тому +2

      Mainly lifestyle reasons. I choose not to own a car. I live in a 700ish 3rd floor apartment in DC with no elevator. With bikes, my hands aren’t free to bring groceries home. They often can’t be parked inside of the places that I frequent and bike thefts are fairly common in DC.
      I use Onewheels as my primary vehicles. I would say, after less than a week on the GT-S, I wouldn’t rely on it as my only/primary board. I like e-bikes though! They just don’t integrate as well into my daily routines.
