Do you think streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are bad for the music industry?
Would you pay more to support your favorite artists?

I still buy records just to support the artist, I only stream music when I’m at my computer, and whenever I’m away from my computer and listen to the album I bought off my iTunes so it goes hand in hand. If you like the artist do both

My policy is that if I️ love a band or a song a lot, I️ will buy it on iTunes. I️ know that the artists don’t get paid from the services, so I want to give them money for their amazing content.

Yes. Streaming services are KINDA ruining music industry. It is ofc nice to easily listen to music where ever you want, BUT, the thing that pisses me off is that people are not buying their favourite bands/artists albums or singles. So I think people are here to blame, not streaming services. Things would suck without Spotify, but people please, support your favourite artists and bands by buying the physical copies of their albums, or even digital albums. I still to this day buy singles and albums from my favourite bands, and also listen to music from Spotify.

I buy physical CDs to listen to in my truck while I’m driving. I also collect physical vinyls. While I’m mowing, working, or just sitting around I use Spotify and pay the $10.00 a month.

I think it is. A lot of stuff killed CD Sells. I remember when CDs reached the height of sells. The record stores was selling like crazy. Everybody was buying CDs replacing their favorite vinyl records with the newly remastered CDs. Trying to copy vinyl onto cassettes you couldn't get a whole lot of quality. I think with digital downloads, illegal copying, UA-cam, and all this other online music it's done a lot of damage to the music industry.

I think they should enter a function that once you've listened to a song more often than 5 times you still have to pay extra the song. I mean. Spotify is great to discover new stuff. But once a artist makes it into my personal rotation I want them to get a little more and that should be somehow automated.

We should buy music to support our fav artists/bands. It helps encourage them to continue to write new music because what’s the point of them writing music if they’re not getting any recognition for their art. Don’t we want to see our fav artists and bands succeed?

Honestly I feel they deserve more money because when they don't get as much money I feel that results in the record label having less of a budget to create music and causes music to be cheaply made which I'm guessing is why rap is so popular because many of those beats are a dime a dozen to make

In every free service, There's should be a limit to the number of times a song can be listen for free. Most of the songs produced these are almost forgettable after one two plays anyways. If there's music which connect to with the soul of the listener he/she would want that song to be a part of his life and wouldn't mind buying the record(either physical or digital) at a reasonable price . Also rather than releasing tons of mediocre albums it's better if only a handful of good albums are made and promoted to a wider audience.

Most of us only play covers at bars to make money and the bands im in which are original bands, arent even attempting to make money anymore. To be honest im surprised if spotify etc will survive in the future anyway. Pandora a large streaming company shut down in AUS and NZ. As for streaming price i cant even afford the current 99c for 3months on spotify so its doesnt bother me. But if spotify were to not be free at all, or other music streaming companies then to be honest i wouldnt of survived life till now.

When I pay income tax in Poland, I am able to point an organisation that benefits 1% of my tax amount. Not much but still... Cost of Spotify Premium in PL is like 6$ a month. Not much. And if I knew I could send the money directly to some artists I love (10% to this, and 20% to that...) I think I would agree for even doubling the Spotify fee. No, I don't think Spotify is killing it now, unless I discover something dirty in their "similiar band" algorithms. The other answers to this question is "band merch" and "Patreon".

There is a problem both ways. You could argue this issue with streaming music is worse for the artist than a traditional purchase, and while it make be better for the artist to buy the album, they still get fucked over. The label takes a significant majority of the profit, and typically what small amount is left over is then divided between the band members, their manager, plus anyone else involved with the band continuously. And then there are things like paying for roadies when you have them (at least I believe roadies would get paid right?).
On top of the, in regards to physical album sales, a new standard edition album in Australia costs about $16, that's expensive if you like buying albums like me, and not only does a hug chunk of the go to the label more than the artist, but another big chunk of that is a mark up by the physical retailer so they can make a profit.
Basically any option I can think of, the artist always gets fucked over, and it's a matter of which option is the least shitty.

  • @bonzodog67lizardking15

Those poor, poor, big music conglomerates... In the good old days, it was they who were giving the artists pennies per cassette, album, or disc... Now that physical media sales have plummeted (due to years of price gouging and billions of used CDs endlessly recirculating in the market) they are scrambling to find a way to make up for that lost revenue; they have even tried to renegotiate contracts with artists for a bigger slice of the touring.
Spotify gives the Big Labels a 70% cut of the money for the content -- and it's only after that -- the big labels play their old game of stuffing their pockets and flicking a few pennies to the actual artists. It's the same old story; Big Label greed.
If you truly feel for the struggling artist, remember: it was the big labels that poisoned the well.

its stupid the amount of money that they make, our favourite artists dont get the money they should just cuase we cant be bothered to pay what we used to. or what our parents or past generations have done. By buying albums! The whole music scene has suffered whether if your into black veil brides or suicide silence or kanye west; all music has suffered. because music is just so easy to access, for so little! I get the idea of having it right with u on the go in ur phone, thats always been something thats been developed over the years, with boom boxes, walkmans and CD WLAKMANS AND IPODS AND MP3 PLAYERS, i meanits amazing how far the tech has come. and yet the people havnt come anywhere near as far as the tech, sure its awesome being able to band to band on spotify or apple music but it doesnt bring people together as much. It would be awesome for the bands if maybe on these apps that we have like one listening to something and then if u want the album then u have to pay what u would for like a C/D. ive brought C/Ds from bands that i really love to help them. plus the C/D is really cool and in my opinion just has a better sound, hell i brought a second hand walkman for nothing and now i use that. idk just my thoughts.

I hate buying something and then find out I only like one or two songs.I have listened to 2 albums online before I actually brought the album. Most of the music I listen to is from Europe and most of these artists don't tour the U.S. I try to make up for the music I don't buy by going to concerts. As long as those tickets are under $100.

This is the reason why my music teacher hates Spotify. Artists go broke using it. I still love CDS and am so happy LPs are making a comeback. • @EpicPianoArrangements
    @EpicPianoArrangements 3 роки тому +1

I completely agree. It does NOT empower people to make a living through music. I'm a pianist who makes covers of film and video game music for the piano. I'll generally make $0.50 per track if a person downloads and listens to it. To make that SAME amount of money through streaming, 1,100 people need to stream it... so 1,100 people get to listen to my music, and for that - I get 50 cents for it. I get 10K streams a month (on average), and will barely make $15 from it.
Streaming is a way for the companies like Spotify and Apple Music to charge everyone who uses it about $100/year and pay PEANUTS to the musicians. Let's put that in perspective... If the average stream earns you $0.0045 (yes, that's not a typo - not even a single cent per stream), then you would need to listen to 20K tracks a year (55 tracks a day, every day) to get your moneys worth. Most people don't, therefore the music companies make their profit, and the musicians get scammed.
It is genuinely destroying those who are trying to make it big in the business and promote their music.

If Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Prime didn't keep musicians on the breadline I would most definitely pay more for a monthly subscription. I did a report on this in my stats class one year... and ethically when it comes down to it, you can't make a deal with Best Buy to where you buy a TV and then say I'm only going to use it once so I should only have to pay for the one-time viewing. Musicians deserve the same rights as merchants, selling a product ethically. As a musician, I shouldn't have to be in the T-shirt business to make a profit on my craft.

    2) paying more -> wouldn’t make sense to me, because then it would be as much as if I bought the album (25$ per month can be 2-5 albums per month, that‘s enough for me) and if I buy the album I own it and don’t have to give it back when I stop paying monthly, so I benefit more from that
I‘m still buying albums, main reason because I don‘t want my fav artists to „die“ (like Yashin and glamour of the kill), but there are plenty more reasons I prefer buying over streaming

Literally the music industry had it all figured out. Then streaming can along because its "better". Why fix something that isn't broken ? CDs worked just fucking fine

It should at least be harder for anyone out there to always listen for free. You should buy the record. I would buy more Cds if there still/more accessible. Good money used to serve big in terms of great delivery in music for as the industry but the listener first.

I don't get my music from Apple or spotify I get my music from Google play, I pay 10 bucks a month for my subscription but I won't use it any more if I have to start paying for have every song I wanna listen to an I don't see what problem is cuz musicians make lots of money by selling albums, sold out concerts an so on

i honestly hate that they aren’t being paid much... but i also don’t want to pay more for my Spotify subscription. i also wonder if the artists we love want the price of the subscription to go up? i think that so many bands/artists care about their listeners that they don’t want us to go broke because we want to listen to their music

Spotify pays artits depending on the deal between the label and Spotify. I.e. Taylor Swift gets paid a lot more than an underground artist who uses Spotify just to reach a bigger audience (ideally). I'd recomend using bandcamp. They are fair to musicians and you can buy the artist's music directly from the site.

I would HATE to pay extra monthly, but something has to be done that better benefits bands and doesn't step on the toes of consumers. I'm going to think on this, but if you guys have ideas let's talk about it.

Artists make money from shows and merch sales. Only people still trying to make money off of music sales are old school bands. Modern artists are giving their music away, making it accessible as possible so they can grow a fan base.

I only use streaming apps because I'm broke and if I could then I would buy the band's CDS but again, broke...

Is it bad? It’s terrible. Would I consider paying more? Of course. I was very happy with the way it used to be and buying cd’s etc I love music and I respect the bands and artists I follow and feel privileged to buy their awesome work
