I have been learning English for many years, but my teachers have never taught me these 44 phonetics. I learned these phonetics through this video. I am hopeful that I will learn them fast. Thank You!
I find this information extremely useful, as a spanish speaker I'm impressed that our schools actually dont teach this, its not even hard and its like the basics to be able to pronounce correctly any language.
Right? I feel like this should be a compulsory part of the curriculum from a very young age, well before students are learning an auxiliary language at school.
they don’t really teach that because the students might get scared after seeing so many symbols, but i do agree that it’s very useful. i’m trying to learn them rn because i want to become an english teacher and it’s pretty complicated now that im older 😅
Hey bro! Completely agree with you there, just wanna say that its more like ‘pronounce any language correctly’ than ‘correctly’ being before ‘any’. Some weird adverbial rule
I have a lot of pleasure from watching your video! I'm ukrainian and I was studing English last 3 years. Now I am temporarily living in Netherlands and I continue to improve my skills with your lessons. Thank you very much for your great work!
Great video to explain the IPA to beginners, but there are a few mistakes: -The ŋ does not include the "g"-sound at the end. -There's no i in the transcription of 'ship', but an ɪ without a dot, while in sheep the i: should have a dot. -You're coupling up vowels in short-long pairs, but those pairs aren't actually related: i, u, ɑ, and ɔ all exist as short vowels too, though not necessarily in standard English pronunciation. They are produced very differently than ɪ, ʊ, æ and ɒ respectively. You can easily test this by checking how your mouth does completely different things for the vowels in e.g. words like foot and goose.
it was wonderful. some of words were unrecognizable and seemed like Egyptian hieroglyphs but as soon as I started to pronounce them everything becomes clear. thank you teacher 🌹

I stumbled across this video curious about learning IPA chart symbols. As an American I found this interesting. I was pronouncing the words like a British person, it was kind of crazy to me lol. Caught me off guard a little. Thanks for the video.
Hi Master! I am from Ethiopia. really it was very fantastic lesson. since I am English as a foreign language teacher it is directly connected with my career. even though I thought English for so many years, phonetic transcription was difficult for me to teach my students. I know I am poor in English but I am still hungry to communicate fluently with it. I expect so many things from you.
Thank you. I’m 73, so we learned the old phonetics. I learned a lot from this. But I think I’ll only use it when looking up words in another language, such as Italian or French, and I will still use my Oxford English Dictionary (1968) phonetics for any English word I need help with to pronounce.
It's so cool that an international pronunciation alphabet exists. If one were to learn how to pronounce all the sounds in it, one would be able to read aloud any word in any accent of any language, as long as a native or a speaker of the language can translate it to the IPA
Amazing. I can only guess how helpful this video must be for non native speakers. Even as a native speaker I'm struggling with the phonetic alphabet and this is going to be a real handy reference to go back to while I learn the phonetic alphabet.

Yes. This is a great video, good work indeed. 🙏But I think you could correct this mistake with an on-screen card? Also the /ŋ/ sound in, say, _feeling_ does not have, as such, a /g/ sound at the end of it. The sound of voiced velar nasal /ŋ/ is going towards a /g/ but actually stops short of including it. This adding of /g/ is something most French speakers learning English typically do.
Quite a serious mistake, especially when he claims that i is "ship" but i: is "sheep". Those are two very different vowels, not a lengthening of the same vowel.

Excellent way of teaching! Super thanks for making this video! I looked through other videos, but yours one stands out!! The way you have segmented 44 sounds is incredible. Love the way you explained each and every pronunciation with great analogy!! Super clear!! I'm so happy to have bumped into your channel! I have been looking to learn IPA but didn't find any good channel. Now, I feel I am at the right place!

Omg I’m a native speaker of American English who has read books since age 3, studied other languages, has an English degree, watches lots of BBC shows, has English and Australian friends, and can normally make an educated guess on these. I got lost quickly! 😂 The biggest problem is the non rhotic pronunciation. How much do I rely on pronounced Rs to recognize IPA? I subscribed. I clearly have a lot to learn. Thank you 😂😂
Hi Greg! Could you please make a detailed video about the difference in the pronunciation of "luck" and "look", "but" and "boot", and other pairs like these? Your Northern accent is a special one :) I speak the American version, but I love the way your English sounds. Cheers from Ukraine!
@@bobbydhopp65 Hey, thanks! That's cool, but I prefer to hear the difference by ear :) More or less I've been successful in this since started watching BBC series.
@ccompass Northern British English is given a nicknamed "Oop North". People speaking English with this kind of accent do not say /ʌ/. They replace that speech sound with /ʊ/. So, there are no differences between luck, look and but, all of them being pronounced /lʊk/, /lʊk/ and /bʊt/ respectively. As for the word "boot", like "shoot, root, moon", it is always pronounced with a long /uː/.
Thank you so much Sir, it really helped me a lot. My minor in university is TESL and this is my first time learn about phonetics. You explained so well and easy to understand.
Hi there, Greg! Great lesson, as always! I really appreciated it. I've learned the American English, and I'm familiar with the English phonetic symbols, but I was surprised to hear the pronunciation of the word "mayor" /meə/ in British English (the only one I missed in your test) because, for me, it sounded like "mare" and not "mayor". That would create a huge confusion if I were trying to understand you saying a sentence like: "She's our mayor!" I'd probably understand: "She's our mare!" hahaha.
And what's more funny, google translator pronounces it in the same way despite the fact phonetic symbols are different. It is possible that there is different length of "e" in these words (mare has little bit longer "e:") but in a conversation I couldn't hear any differences. :)
@@youssefn8298 Yeah, and maybe it’s school fatigue. It’s exam season. A very frustrating season. With God's help, this is my last year of school and I will go to university🤲🩷
Hi Greg, I saw a video of you where you talk about some good youtubers teaching English. I can say that I don't agree with you, you said they are good, well, it's not like that for me, you are the best because you make yourself understood and so you give us the courage to go on studying while with the others you throw in the towel and you can never learn, with you in a month I learned a lot and correctly. I don't compliment you and I'm not even kind but I'm telling the real truth!
Thank you so much! During the lectures at the University I couldn’t understand a thing. You make it sound so easy :3 I feel 25% smarter than 15 minutes ago 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
when the quiz was coming, in your basic phonetics episode, I couldn't do it but I tried again and finally, i did it. Thank you for your intelligence teacher. I LOVE YOUR LESSONS!

But there was a little mistake in the IPA symbol for /i/ (6:12) and /ɪ/ (6:59):
Actually, it goes like this:
/iː/ sheep, feet, leave, peek
/ɪ/ ship, fit, live, pick
But good job!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Exactly! There is another mistake indeed. The e sound in bed is not /e/ (closed e like in say) but /ε/ (open e): /b εd/
Quite a serious mistake, especially when he claims that i is "ship" but i: is "sheep". Those are two very different vowels, not a lengthening of the same vowel.
Also the a in "cart" is not a long version of the a in "cat". They have different symbols so this should have been obvious. Big mistake.
really it's /ɪj/ and /ɪ/
Thos short video is more valuable than thousand of UA-cam videos I watched.

The English pronunciation is challange! Thanks for this phonetics symbols class.
Hi Greg! Could you please make a detailed video about the difference in the pronunciation of "luck" and "look", "but" and "boot", and other pairs like these? Your Northern accent is a special one :) I speak the American version, but I love the way your English sounds. Cheers from Ukraine!
Luck has the /u/ sound and look has the /ʊ/ or /ə/ sound
@@ramamonato5039 Oop North :-) Funny. But (!) You should've mentioned that it's a bit of a derogatory one.
Yeah, those BRITS may not pronounce the R in mayor ... but we still do. 😂
this is so great i was so scard saying that phonetics are the worse but now i am so thankful for you cuz i understand them very clearly
I had an exam to write on how to transcribe words and it has really helped thank you sir for your hardwork.
MAY GOD BLESS YOU
Thanks mate! You just taught my class and i in 15 minutes what our professor has been struggling to for an entire semester
I'm very tired😢

@@VishalKahar-o4m what do you say ??😒
You mean tired from how complicated the phonetics is😢?
@@youssefn8298 Yeah, and maybe it’s school fatigue. It’s exam season. A very frustrating season. With God's help, this is my last year of school and I will go to university🤲🩷
I always had a problem with pronunciation. Thanks to you, now I know where to start. Love from 🇱🇰.
Jhonny sins brother🎉

Best video so far, easy to understand, very clear, not too difficult, THANK YOU
Hi Greg, I saw a video of you where you talk about some good youtubers teaching English.
I'm creating a language, this is a blessing to me
Thank you pal..! You have a new subscriber.❤
Thank you so much! During the lectures at the University I couldn’t understand a thing. You make it sound so easy :3 I feel 25% smarter than 15 minutes ago 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
