    "The Nikon NIKKOR 28mm 2.8 is a wonderful lens. Amazingly sharp to my surprise. I love the look of vintage lenses but one of the biggest hangups I have with buying them is the possibility of fungus, dust, or moisture inside from age. Finding a super clean vintage lens like this one is a steal. I got this lens for around $130 at a local camera store. When I shoot with something like this, it makes me question why I'm paying for all these features in a lens that I don't really need.
    There are lenses out there that offer great features, and yet I'm paying for most of them without even using most of them.
    I bought a photo fotodiox Nikon to EF for like $18 while at the shop as well."

    I have a collection of vintage analog film cameras and some Polaroid, and I "found" the Nikkor H 3.5 28mm in one Nikkormat camera, I ordered the Pixco NIK-EF adapter and fit like a glove and Voilà! The magic arrived! What a pristine image! I own also the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8, but definitily the Nikkor have his own personality. I always use the Sigma with ND filter, and with the Nikkor I almost use it without the ND filter, and yes, the light weigth is a temptation when I do handheld shots with my BMPCC 6K G2. Congratulations for your cinematic job!

    I got the nikkor 24mm f2.8 and use it with a speedbooster which gives it a great low light performance. Also got the35 mm f2.8 and 55mm f2.8 macro. On the way is a 50mm f1.8. With the speedbooster this one will be a sub f1 super fast lens for low light.
    These are great lenses at an affordable price. Some people complain that the colors run blue, but I really think they just don't get the aperture right. I tested them and only got blue hue when the aperture was wide open in daylight. With the right aperture the colors are beautiful. All the lenses cost me less than usd100 individually, except the 50mm f1.8 which cost 110. All are near mint or mint condition.

    Great video with many gorgeous shots! Regarding "when this lens is sharp, the light source turns blue." This is spherochromatism (out of focus highlights showing up as color fringes). It should appear magenta/blue in the foreground and green the background. I think on your two freeway shots, you may have thrown the lens to infinity which is past the cars, leading to the blue. I see magenta in the nearest cars and blue in the further away cars when you were focused past them. When you focused in, they all turned greenish. I have the AI-s version of this lens (which is still sold new from 1981 to today) and I agree with your comment that this lens has character and a vintage look. Some people consider the green fringing in the background to be a big boost to bokeh, especially when the background includes trees and foliage. Not so much for night maybe. You can use the shift in color to focus the lens. Stopping down the lens diminishes spherochromatism. So I would say that when this lens is in focus, the light sources exhibit no color fringes. When out of focus, highlights can exhibit magenta/blue (fore) and green (aft). Again, great video. I really liked the lens flares on the car dash.

      Really good advice!!! I Own the same lens and I really like it! I shoot with the pocket 6k too. I bought the lens on eBay and I received it with the back glass scratches and I tested it at night (you can see the video on my UA-cam) and the lens is super soft! I texted the seller because he didn’t wrote on the ad that the lens have this scratches problem and he is not willing to pay the shipping and the import taxes (cose I bought it from USA and I live in Italy). So I decided to keep it. I cleaned all the coating from the back lens, but still not sharp as yours… can you help me in som way? Is possible to get the coating back? Thank you! And amazing video! @@collinausbury BMPCC 6k, Sony A7S 3 and Panasonic S1 with Ninja V, really want the kinifinity LF but not a priority as a hobbyist. I love to shoot with the Leica R's (28, 35, 50 and 90) followed by the Rollei, Takumars and Pentax/Minolta in that order. The Rollei are essentially Contax Carl Zeiss glass eqv.
      The Pentax K/Minolta/Canon nFDs have a more consistent coating and colour matched well, but getting a set of colour matched Leica R's was tough.

    Great underrated lens! You have the older ai version of the 28/2.8, which sell for around $80-100. There’s a newer ai-s version that’s sharper at close focus with a floating CRC lens element. I prefer your older ai version though, because it’s sharper at infinity and is a better general use lens. My favorite version is the faster 28mm F2. It’s a great performer wide open, performs well at close focus, and is sharp at infinity. You should try the 28/2 if you like adapting lenses for video.

      @@collinausbury The AI lenses are generally of superior construction compared with the AIS, although the AIS lenses are still well made. The optical formula of some lenses was updated for AIS but the AIS lenses were designed for still photographers to achieve focus faster and have much shorter focus throws. Many people prefer AI for cinema use.

    • @collinausbury
      @collinausbury  3 роки тому

      I discovered this last week. There’s a website that has catalogued every Nikon lens ever made, and the biggest difference I’m seeing is AI-S aperture blade count occasionally moving from 7 (AI) to 9. The next difference like you mentioned is the focus throw being nearly halved. My biggest thing since I’m considering building a kit of these, I want the long focus throw of the AI, but I think I moreso want the nine bladed aperture on the AIS.
      Things to consider!

      I can see an argument for it! People suggest saving the money and going for the AI versions instead. The AI-S have small little upgrades like the occasional aperture blade changes from 7 to 9 blades (more circular bokeh), but a huge difference between AI and AI-S is the focus throw. AI lenses have a much longer throw typically. Preferences at that point. Good luck in your kit building!
