I'm a long time Red Sox fan and this film clip brings back the memories of 1986 and Bill Buckner. Billy Buck and Bull Durham, two fine Cubs' firstbasemen. It could only happen in the movies! LOL!!! Slow or stop the film and look at how far Durham's glove is off the ground! Sometimes when you squat like that for a grounder your forearm hits your thigh and stops your arm and glove from getting down to ground level.

Cubs replaced Buckner with Durham at first base early in the season, this created friction between Buckner and the cubs that caused the Cubs to trade him to the Red Socks mid season. This play that Durham failed at was much more routine then Buckner who barely got to where the ball was and the ball took a nasty bounce slightly to the left just as Buckner got his glove down. This ball rolled mostly strait and centered; Durham simply didn't get his glove down all the way.

The biggest difference, to me, was that Durham was 100% healthy. Buckner's ankles hurt so bad he had to wear high tops and ice them before and after each game. One was a player error (Durham) and the other a managerial error (not taking Buckner out of the game for a better defensive 1B).

Durham's Glove Took Bath In Playoff Before Cubs Did
MESA, ARIZ. - Nearly four months after the Cubs lost the National League pennant to the San Diego Padres, a curious account of what went on in the Cubs' dugout before the fifth playoff game has spilled forth.
Here is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the soggy truth of the matter that left Cub fans with an unquenched thirst for a World Series:
There are 10 minutes left before game time, the fifth and deciding contest of the League Championship Series at Jack Murphy Stadium. The winner will meet the Detroit Tigers in the World Series.
Ryne Sandberg, who would be named the league's Most Valuable Player a month later, fumbles around in the dugout for a swig of Gatorade. Sandberg, the two-time Gold Glove second baseman who committed only six errors all season, accidentally knocks over the ice cooler filled with Gatorade, soaking Leon Durham's first baseman's mitt.

I think Durham gets a bum rap here. The Cubs probably would have lost anyway. Let's assume he makes the play - Flannery is out at first. Martinez moves to third, now there's two outs. Wiggins singles, Martinez scores, 3-3. Gwynn doubles, Wiggins scores, 4-3. Garvey singles, Gwynn scores, 5-3. So his error is the difference between 6-3 and 5-3. Either way, Cubs lose.

I guess my point is Durham gets blamed for everything. Yes his error was important. But Sutcliffe deserves some of the blame too. He gave up 2 runs in the previous inning - nothing to do with Durham. And in the fateful 7th, Sutcliffe gave up a walk, two singles, and a double, all when getting just one out (two if you count the play the Durham should have made). But no one talks about how Sutcliffe, who was 16-1 with the Cubs that season, fell apart in the 6th and 7th inning.
