Kobbie Mainoo made his first start for Manchester United against Everton where he put in a composed and clever performance, well beyond what is expected of an 18-year-old academy prospect.
The defensive midfielder has given Man Utd fans some hope during a testing start to the season that he could prove to be a bright spark under Erik ten Hag.
JJ Bull is here to explain just why he is exactly what is needed at Old Trafford.

If you watched Man U during pre season you already knew about mainoo especially when they played Arsenal. He’s a midfield general
Saw that game live and he was absolute class
He's more of a press resistant deep lying midfielder
Totaly agree, kid is great potentional, maybe next Makelele.
@@mtho3509what position does he play a defensive mid or a central mid
@@alamKhan-kz6jd he can play any of the main 3 midfield positions. Ten Hag uses him deeper, but he's used an attacking midfielder in the academy.
JJ is literally the most personable and best on camera football nerd. I can listen to him talk about anything in this style.
My face broke into an uncontrolled smile as soon as he picked up that guitar.
@@stevenlongan5791 Stroke?
Kobbie's ability to walk... slowly... Like a bloody Leopard... Is the most brilliant part of his game imo. He knows what space is, and has the pace to pounce - in defence and attack. He's the absolute antithesis to Scott McTominay who, as we all know, hides behind players.
Loved the guitar work btw JJ. But the real question is... WHERE IS THE PODCAST? GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!
Yes! He reminds me of FdJ, walks around, spots an inch of space and he's moving.
mctominay is great at identifying space in the final third and making runs from deep though
@@madsnn4222 Say that again?
This kid is class. Looks the real deal.
His composure and technical ability is unbelievable for a young kid. Marks him out.
(villa fan).
Another potential gem from the newly minted English conveyor belt.
You mean JJ right?
He's only played like 100 minutes so far, but he's looked the best player on field both times he's played. Also telling that City were looking at him. ETH needs to be patient with him, though; don't rush him into playing every game where he'll get chewed up or injured.
City have supposedly been linked with him, but I've not seen or heard anything from them to even indicate that they're interested.
@@alexndrmstd Yes, they have, and no, that's not why. City have tried to steal him in the past, ever since he was 9.
@@alexndrmstd Lol "dont be daft". Fella they've tried to poach him since he was much younger but Mainoo chose United over them. If you don't know what you're talking about best to stay quiet 👍
@@alexndrmstd🍩
There were big rumours about this a month ago. Before neville said that. Don't be daft
@@barryh.4220they wanted to sign him before he signed his professional contract with United earlier this year. But United locked him up with a contract after that.
During pre season, he played against Arsenal. He looked like the 100+ mil player on the pitch that game. Hopefully he stays fit.
5:38 love the mention of carrick. He's been toooo underappreciated by football fans, even some united fans as well. Great to see him being recgonised. Mainoo becoming next carrick...👀👀
Man Utd fans putting loads of pressure on a young player after a single game again? No, I don't believe it.
This this this.
Man United showing faith in their youth like any other club? People upset by that? No, I don’t believe it.
Yeah as a united fan we need to give the kid time, We literally can't afford to overrated and overhype him.
Footballers live in a bubble and let's be honest, not that bright. Any fan pressure is irrelevant.
Newcastle are doing the exact same thing with Miley?
I've been waiting for him to get a good run of games for a long time. Last season was Alejandro Garnacho's big chance to show that he's ready for first team action and we've known that this was supposed to be Kobbie's season for the same thing. Unfortunately he got injured. We've seen how good he is before, pretty sure he won the youth player of the year or something. He looks incredible and frankly far better on the ball than Cas, Amrabat and Scott combined.
I think he was a big part of Ten Hag's plans this season, he was very involved in pre-season. Injuries really destroyed this season.
He was playing u18s at 15 without being overdeveloped physically too.
Seen so many comparisons to other players but that ability to make it feel like he has more time on the ball to make a decision immediately made me think of Carrick. Glad to see the i wasn't going mad. Lots of potential there, hope he can reach the very top of the hype.
Let's not put too much pressure on him that's it. He fits what united need in the midfield but still just 18.
Good enough, Old enough.
What pressure? It's every footballer's dream to play football in front of 80,000 fans. Ask Mainoo, he'd be the first one to tell you he wants to play every game.
I love how unhinged JJ can be, I honestly look forward to him in videos every day.
In pre season he was a beast. The signs were there. Even yesterday against Newcastle, he was very calm. He played very well. ETH is moulding a mini De Jong is Kobbie.
Mainoo is a rare type of player that I haven’t seen at United since the days of Carrick. Don’t wanna overhype him but he’s exactly what we need in that midfield. The scary thing is though, that he’s being partnered with midfielders that don’t really like possession and barely ever show for the ball.
McT just doesn’t have the knack or aptitude to attack the space that Mainoo creates and that tends to weigh our midfield down. He needs a more active partner like Donny who is Ajax born and bred. It should be a no brainer as well with Mainoo holding as the 6 and VDB playing B2B. All Bruno would need to do is create the final ball. I’m beginning to get frustrated already when I’m watching Mainoo ball out in midfield only to see no one have the ability to reciprocate his quality.
If ETH, the person who brought Donny into the spotlight, isn’t playing Donny when he’s available then there’s something we’re missing. He’s obviously not at the level required for the Prem.
VDB isn't a B2B though. He is more of a 10
Mainoo is gonna be an absolute monster
He Mai, he Mainoot.
Kobbie is a Generational Talent, we need to keep him as a Utd Player, in the Center of the Pitch, as long as poss
he can be one of the Bedrocks of the team for years to come, what with Garnacho, Hojlund, Hannabel, Mainoo, makes a core
of Academy Products, ready for first team Action, and Steeped in the Utd traditions of Play.
the Future Is Bright
That reverse scooped pass he gave to Bruno on the right against Everton was everything I need to know about this boy.
How on earth did he even see Bruno and what gave him the confidence to even attempt that pass?
Bruv...
This is the problem with Manchester United, whenever a player has a decent performance, he gets hyped like the next big thing which puts pressure on him and when he doesn't rise to the expectations, it gets very disappointing and everyone calls for his head and the cycle begins anew.
Every united talent will be hyped by the fans
It is normal
It is top the coaching staff to manage him
And also up to the players to manage himself.
Fans can't do anything, all they can do his talk.
We hype Ronaldo as an 18 years
Similar for 1999 class
So it is not excuse
Every Brazilian that went to Madrid and Barcelona and still turn up
Vini and neymar were overhyped before kicking a ball in Europe
It’s up to the manager/recruitment/doctors to ensure that the squad is large/experienced/fit enough to ensure that everything isn’t placed on the shoulders of a single youth player.
Football fans being football fans isn’t the problem at MUFC. Bad squad management and planning is.
Yes, THIS is the problem with Manchester United.
Totally agree with you. Although I think this boy called Kobbie Mainoo looks like a player that has the ability to contain the pressure. His composure and decision making is surprisingly impressive for a player that's only 18 years old. He has loads of potential in my opinion.
Yeah you don’t hear this with idk Harvey Elliott at Liverpool or Cole Palmer at Chelsea. They’re rated sure, but they’re never built up to the crazy level Man United do with their players. Januzaj, Morrison and Macheda come to mind for me
The most surprising thing about Mainoo is his composure. There have been better teenagers in the prem but I don't remember one so mature.
It’s all in the mentality
Remember when Fabregas was coming through?
Imagine the pressure gavi & pedri where under coming through, as ten hag said ( If you old enough, your good enough ) kobbie has the quality so let him shine
What happened to Amrabat? You guys did a video saying that’s what Utd neeeded, but he’s not done anything so far.
I don’t think he’s been fit
He's like 10 games into the season. What do you expect him to do in that time. Give him some time, he'll show you what he's all about. If I was Ten Hag, I'll play Amrabat and Mainoo together against Newcastle tonight.
Exactly, his debut against a 2nd string Crystal palace, and they were all raving about being the missing link 😆..this is what you're doing to Manoo after playing against Everton. Please!
I do wonder what will happen when the opposition starts man-pressing this guy with superior physical profiles. If he can manage that, I could see him becoming as elite as Kanté.
The basic fact that our CB have someone to pass straight forward to when building up from the back makes me so happy. Casemiro was that player last season but before that it's been so long since we had a proper CDM. Hopefully Mainoo can become a first team regular as a pure CDM.
Mainoo has always been CDM in youth levels. Started playing CAM RW ST in u/23s under the instruction of Ten Hag
Don't think that's true, seeing as ETH is using him as a 6/8 hybrid
@@calsingfield3450no I read ten hag instructed to play him in every position so he can understand the movement of his teammates. Which will help him be a good cdm
@@jeorgj9491if that is the correct reason, then that is really smart.
Mainoo's profile is the exact same as Frenkie De Jong's, makes sense as to the drama over that transfer. Hopefully he can reach that level and even higher, still only 18 so a long future ahead for this kid. Very excited.
Banger video - I like the switch to zooming in on highlighted/discussed players. Keep showing off the personality of your people!
Mainoo on ball is solid. Off ball 1v1 defensively, he has a long way to go as a single cdm.
His scanning is excellent. He knows where the danger is and where a way out is before he receives the ball and get the forward pass away. Excellent player with a bright future.
Not JJ bull randomly pulling out a guitar from nowhere 😂
We‘ve been waiting for him for yeeears now, love it
That Mctominay guitar song was actually lit bruv
Great video! I don't think united fans should look to him as the instant fix to all their issues & be mindful that he just returned from injury so don't expect him to always start or play full matches right away but that being said, he's incredibly press resistant & silky smooth on the ball it makes him such a joy to watch. His composure & awareness really does seems like that of a veteran, it's fascinating how he's able to make what should be complicated look so simple. I just hope ten hag is careful to manage his minutes, would hate to see him being run into the ground before he's reached his full potential like we've seen with so many promising young prospects already
Very nice video and come on man was the Guitar necessary lol nice one man
"Happy Mainoo thoughts only" might be an all-time great Tifo caption
Been waiting for this since pre season!
JJB entertaining as always. Good job.
The juxtaposition between Mainoo and Mctominay on the bool is stark:
Scotty looks like bambi on ice with caffeine in his legs, and Mainoo is just a Rolls Royce gliding around everywhere
People still can’t fathom that England’s academy system provides better players than whatever crap clubs or ten haag signs in the summer.
loved the guitar playing!!
im a liverpool fan and i'll be the first to admit that he's exactly what we need too. extremely jealous. very low chance he'll ever play for us, but he'd be perfect. so talented.
This is the best tactical explanation I have ever witnessed
Hope he can stay fit! Exactly what we need in our midfield 👍🏼
That guitar playing puts John Mayer to shame. What a talent.
I truly believe JJ Bull made this video with the sole purpose of showing of his guitar skills.
I love you JJ, you are so much fun, keep up the zany creative videos:) plus we learn while you make us all smile!
People release a similar video for every player that United buys or returns from injury, but they still keep losing
We are doing brilliant considering injuries and drama going on
Basically what Ten Hag needs to do is scream at the recruitment team to buy a midfielder like Mainoo but with a few years more experience. If we are going to go down the English route, there is one answer sticking out at me already- Eze. I genuinely think he will develop into a Carrick like player. The way Eze can take the ball from deep, be very press resistant and effortlessly move up the pitch 20/30 yards right through the heart of the pitch is just what we need.
Great video! Who else also comes here after Utd winning at Wolves?
You know the analysis is next level when it includes a guitar riff.
Always a good day when JJ makes a video! 😁
Great video! Mainoo 💪
Since sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, I've seen a lot of money spent, a lot of managers come and gone, and way more "this is what Man United needs" than silverware...
He is the definition of composure
JJ just makes these things easier and funnier
thank you JJ
Looking forward to ‘control and manipulate time’ being the new skill attribute in football manager
no because why did the guitar analogy actually make sense??? 😭
This is a piece of art, chaotic, beautiful art.
United paid £8-9m loan fee for Amrabat, and £55-60m for Mount, and yet all our hopes now rest on an 18 year old academy graduate for our midfield to function?!?
Yeah, we SERIOUSLY need Paul Mitchell and other football people to be in charge of transfers! 😅
Kobbie Mainoo. You are winner of the Anthony Elanga award for 2023.
Young talent has a not bad game so they’re the next Paul Scholes until sold in three years for 10M to Leeds
Lol
Really hoped youd compare him to carrick because its who he reminds me of the most, can really be our next carrick going forward if he keeps this up.
Bring back a podcast please in some form with whatever Line-up you can muster
For anyone searching this list for the Liverpool 8 players see below.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Curtis Jones
Harvey Elliott
Stefan Bajcetic
Caoimhim (Quev) Kelleher
Jarell Quansah
Ben Doak
Conor Bradley
Not included in the list: Marcel Pitaluga (GK) and Vitezslav Jarso
Not sure why Shoretire was included, would have put in Isak Hansen or Dan Gore both have more of a chance at the club.
Shoretire was a weird one to throw in.
There was a load of hype a few seasons ago & he's still quite young but don't think he's seen as above the likes of Lacey, Harrison, Fish, Gore, McNeill (who's dropped off as well) & Forson
he reminds me so much of pogba in the way he moves on the pitch. could be an amazing player if he has the right mind.
Newcastle started a 17 year old midfielder the past couple of games and while he was brilliant beyond his years, they aren't heralding him as a saviour.
Wait, I've seen this video before.... every year, with every player with a bit of spark.
I didn't know I was here for Scott McTominay's song, but I 100% was.
@tifo where can I find this t-shirt?
Star in the making
Part of his game that is overlooked so far is winning the ball and using his body to protect the ball.
JJ you really are off your head. I love it. 😂
Guys, let's be patient with Maino even if he plays bad. He's only 18. His prime will arrive when he's 20+
JJ, a charismatic lad 😂❤
Yeah man utd fans hype everything and media does as well
However I have watched him in the academy and the boy is damn good
Sky is the limit for him, he is a refined version of Pogba comparing the academy time for both
If this is another successful team, we would compare him to pedri by now
Kobbie is really good.. just like JJ Bull 'The Bullet'
Brotha played one good game, putting a lot of pressure on kid isn't gonna do him any good, it's been proven many times
His videos are so funny😂I take lot of pleasure watching him😂😂
Real United fans have been watching him since u17
Even I'm beginning to feel sorry for these United players, especially the kids. No other cohort of players get their talents or potential scrutinized and exaggerated on very little evidence as they do, and it's quite strange. In one week we've had Garnacho mania, Onana-mania, and Kobee Mania. It's wild.
You obviously haven't heard of him before the Everton game wouldn't blame you ...go look at their FA youth cup 2022 run which him and Garnarcho were the superstars and winners of or mufc pre season games if you're interested
@@yaoyayra proving my point exactly. There are no "superstars" in a Youth Cup run. There are players with potential who might have made it.
You ever heard of Jacob Maddox? Brahim Diaz? Josh Barrett? Ryan Cassidy? Paul Glatzel? Bobby Duncan?
All players who tore it up in the Youth Cup in the last 8 seasons or so. Not one of them starting for a premier league club now.
Rashford was always overhyped.
Kobbie simply can't be overhyped because he's almost always gonna exceed people's expectations. The lad is a proper player and Carrington have done a fantastic job developing him. Utd have an absolute superstar in their hands here. No way this boy is gonna fail.
Only way he doesn't become a megastar(I think he already is a megastar) is if his minutes aren't managed properly and he ends up picking up a bad injury. (Pedri, Gavi and Ansu Fati are recent examples)
Ah in fairness If he’s anywhere near pedri or gavi we have a star on our hands
@@shaneoconnor8597 Same profile as Gavi. Imo he's better than Gavi.
@@athreyathandeswaran7510You missed your pills today.
@@shaneoconnor8597Gavi is an overrated thug. Spanish media has been propping him up🤣.
@athreyathandeswaran7510 he's not even close stop overhyping this guy after a couple of games
Usually I don’t like to compare younger players to older ones but Mainoo reminds me of Scholes & Keane put toghether.
More guitar JJ that was great
Engagement. I'm totally here for the bonkers direction JJ is taking these in.
Come on man. This is why I hate hyping youngsters . He has started 1 game and now people are making it seem like he's the solution.
True
They've been starved of quality for so long.
Man.. you must be the second best UA-camr..
Kobbie is the truth
The guitar reference 🤣🤣🤣
Oh god, JJ, calm down
don't forget that McTominay and Bruno are weak to defend in the middle and that is why we need Casimero or Amrabat as 6 in addition to a number 8 who has two qualities to defend in the middle and participates in the creating the game and helping the attack with assists like Modric of Real Madrid
I miss not being able to peek inside the madness that is JJ Bull the Bullard's mind now that the podcast has been reformatted
Amazing host 🌹
Why did it take JJ doing a Roy Keane impression for me to remember he's Scottish 😂 That Scottish to Irish accent transition really surprised me
Totally Agree. Mainoo has a huge ceiling and will be taking Rices England spot by the next WC
He’s a phenomenal talent. To those worried about heaping pressure on young players - you’re either good enough to play for United or you’re not. He’s showing a lot of composure. Also please don’t ever play guitar again 😅😂
im proud i got 100% on the quiz
Tifo definitely Man Utd fan
Maestro
I feel for the kid. Hes a real talent. United is a real mess.
You said this about Onana! lol
