  • On our first day in Belize, outside of the Cayo District near San Ignacio, we toured the sprawling Xunantunich Mayan ruins. These ruins were named after the “Maiden of the Rock,” or the legend of the ghost woman who is said to haunt the pyramids. To get to the ruins' site, we first had to cross the Mopan River by a hand-crank ferry. Once at the site, we enjoyed seeing the many structures of ruins, including the famous El Castillo, the second tallest structure in Belize. This pyramid is adorned with carvings that tell different stories about the royal family and religion of that time.
While this sight is incredible on its own, we highly recommend getting a guide to ensure you are able to learn more about the structures and get the most out of your visit. Also be sure to wear sunscreen, bring a hat, and drink lots of water, as it is incredibly hot and sunny at the sight, even in December when we went on our tour. We hope you enjoy the quick tour to Xunantunich!
