Even street art that isn't explicitly an ad can aid in gentrification, that's another reason people don't like it. Street art is a sanitised form of graffiti that can make an area look attractive to gentrifiers and property developers... As a Philadelphia graffiti artist of the early 1970s I totally agree about murals that are adverts in disguise. To me that totally screams sell out! I earned my stripes as an associate of the KCD. I was early immediately post Cornbread era.
I've been a "tagger", or writer, the whole time I did graffiti and I can't stand this corporatization of graffiti just to dump more useless ads into peoples eye's. I think this is a justified cross-out, as apposed to some territorial bullshit that can escalate. The fact is these are just ads and nobody is mistaking this for actual graffiti so honestly fuck em. The artist already got paid (GG, get that bag!) and the mural is nothing to be admired. It's just a replication of a poster. It lacks the honesty & uniqueness of graffiti styling and could've just as easily been printed out. Typically the artist isn't allowed to design it or add their own flare so there's nothing special about it. Once the ad expires, or is no longer relevant, then it's just nothing and serves no purpose. Do you think in 30yrs someone's gonna be excited to see the Gears of War 4 ad rather than a survived IRAK crew tag or an original TAKI183? People don't care about games or movies the week after it comes out, but an old 60's/70's piece that's still around is literal history and still relevant today. This is basically Ad Blocker for the streets lol
As a person who grew up literally on the streets, I acknowledge that we need money, but those artists that agree to these murals are artistic sell outs
i don't see the problem, you do a gig, you get paid for it, then you can go out and tag your shit wherever you want. This Robin Hood bullshit is tiresome.
