  • After seeing sennheiser HD25 turn up on alibaba for less than half the price they are in the UK I suspected that Fakes may now be doing the rounds.
    So I purchased a pair for a bit of testing to help people distinguish the fakes form the real thing. I hope this helps when shopping and if you have ant questions just ask.

    Thanks so much for this! I just received a pair of HD 4.40 BTs to replace my broken set and strongly suspected they're fake, but the copy is so incredibly close that I was beginning to doubt myself. Seeing this video really helped get my head straight.

    checked out a fake pair on Craigslist today and the red right side connection on the fakes is a more dull colour and slightly translucent. the real ones are a solid bright red. this video just saved me $80!

    Yes, very useful. My pair are about two years old now with the black screws. Didn't want to start pulling them apart, but a quick check on the multi-tester gave ~70 Ohms for each driver. Anyway, I know I've got the original since I'm getting the dreaded driver cutout/attenuation due to oxidisation of the contact springs..

      Just take the plug out and re-insert a few times. It'll clear up the problem untill the next time you want to use them.

    I've got a question. I've broke my left side of Split headband, where coil in box is on it. Since new Split headband costs half of the price of new headphones, can you please tell me how good it is on fake ones? Because in case it is not similar to original, I rather buy new headphones than just that spare part...

    A bit worried, had a set since around 2010-12 as my college tutor had a pair and they sounded great. I think I got the basic edition at the time, no velour earpads etc. They never seemed to sound as good as my tutors did though, his seemed more bass heavy even with velour pads. They also lack the made in ireland on the headband. I did research at the time, and all seemed fine, but now I know there are fakes I am a little worried mine may be too.

    Replaced my 21 year old pair today with a new pair from a reputable music shop - the new ones have got a 'Made in Romania' sticker on the inside of the headband, not 'Made In Ireland' printed across the top of the both headbands like my old ones.
    New ones also have 'Sennheiser' printed across one headband and 'HD 25 70 (ohm symbol) printed across the other. Sennheiser.com website says it has production facilities in Germany, Ireland, USA and Romania.
    Box is a new design and has a hologram and QR scan code on the opening flap.

    Hey i got a replacement to a spoiled piece from sennheiser about 6 months ago and the screws are silver on them so not too sure about the screws being a positive indicator! But thank you, this is gonna help a lot of amature djs from getting duped!

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  9 років тому +2

      meheran affinwalla No as I said - sennheiser have used silver screws in the past and some old stock will still have them. It is just a quick easy visual check - if they have silver screws and they are new stock it is worth investigating further.
      For any one else who gets a silver screwed version anther quick check you can do is squeeze the sides of the earcup - as you can see from the vid the current fake ones are quite flexible where as real ones are pretty solid

    @jason_rythsthomas Thank you so much for making this video. Sadly I bought a used pair on ebay before considering there might be fakes out there. I'm going to measure them on a friend's multimeter soon and am also hoping others online can confirm the hologram sticker on mine is the same as theirs. This is very frustrating but I figure if the impedance is right and the sticker and all else looks legit, they're authentic... unless the fakers have gotten better still. They do sound amazing... although I'm kind of surprised how punchy they are. I'm used to Sony V6s which are very flat compared to these. Anyways, thanks for the video - If the market is in fact flooded with fakes, it'd be great to see an update to this video.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  5 років тому

      I Don't think there were fakes that long ago. The mk I and II cables are interchangeable but only go in the hole one way round, the L or R should face out ( away from your head ) if you look close one pin is fatter than the other. Or it may be that your earcup is open a little, try squeezing the part above and below the socket together while inserting the connector

    Hi I'm not sure I have a fake HD25, I did the tests you mentioned : driver, cable, screws, and everything seems ok. I have an older version to compare with the silver screws, I must have bought it in 2008 or something like that, but I broke a driver, so my family offered me a new one. But something is really bothering me : on the headband there is no mention "made in Ireland" like my older one. Also, one the 2 prints on the handbang could just be scratched with my nail to get it erased (but not the second though). I think my father bought it in China during a business trip. What do you think ? Does that seems fake to you ?

    is it bad for the driver when you check ohm?

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  7 років тому

      I just checked one of our cheapo meters and it was putting out avout 3V. They will make a crackely noise as you connect the meter until you get a solid connection. We have never had any problems but in theory if you left the multemeter on them for a long time the voice coil would heat up a little but I doubt you could do much harm to most drivers with the amount of voltage/current a mulemeter puts out

    Thanks for the vid, I just grabbed what I thought was a good condition used set for £80 off Ebay then discovered they had several pairs after ordering which immediately was a red flag. They arrived and look absolutely perfect, ohms at 61 ish and seem to pass all the tests so really confused. I can't get the drivers open easily there's a rather high quality shrink wrap over the joint. All connections are gold plated etc. Only oddity is a made in Romania sticker on the inside. Is there any other things you could suggest that are subtle giveaways. I'm convinced these are real but after seeing the seller have 5 more pairs it's throwing doubt. The ohm reading too being a little low. Thanks. Quick edit they are ohm at 69 actually

      @@CustomCans thank you for the reply! So, I said thank you to the seller for getting them to me quickly and I was grateful but explained my concerns, told him I'd tested and was sure they where real but how did he get them so cheap and such quantities. He was (I believe) completely honest and stated he buys them as bulk factory reconditioned and tests again before shipping, and was adamant he only sold genuine stuff. There is multiple genuine looking barcodes stuck over the factory ones which to me would corroborate what he is saying, and I was buying them as 'used' anyway so essentially got a new set for £80. Once iv used them a couple months and sure they are good I'll order the upgrade parts from you and take them to the next level! 👌🏼 Thanks again, grateful for the time to respond.

My first pair is about 15 years old and still works fine. I measured with a quallity multimeter, the ohms of my old HD-25 and showed 65 ohms and the my new HD-25 showed 60 ohms. As per the web, the Light version is 60 ohms and the Standard version is 70 ohms. Is it possible that i got the drivers of the Light version attached to the body of the Standard version?
