I served as an officer in the Australian Army for many years - my blokes were rough, crude, sexist, sometimes brutish ... but they were above everything else, exceptional and professional soldiers. Their humour was black and the banter was coarse and often obscene. And I loved every baggy arsed one of them. Churchill once said “We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.”
    It's a cruel world.

Churchill, that racist, bigoted, imperialist, whose remarkable leadership of the English peoples in WW2, covered up many of his sins, which included ; the f*k*d up Gallipoli Campaign, sent police in to quash Welsh miners in 1910, his role in the the 1943 Bengal Famine that claimed 3 millions lives, and his disastrous decision in the 1920s to put England back on the Gold standard.
What Churchill meant to say, " Is we , the upper classes sleep soundly in our beds of wealth privilage and money, because we employ the under classes to fight our wars of occupation and European Worlds Wars.

Yeah, I served in the Army in the late 80s, early 90s. Even some of the cadences we'd sing on PT would land someone in some seriously hot water these days. Hell, when I went through Basic Training, they'd only just recently made it against the rules for the Drill Sergeants to put their hands on recruits, and a couple of mine apparently didn't get the memo. Honestly, I think it was an important part of the process, for us to be scared of what the Drill Sergeants might be capable of. And you know what? We lived, and came out the other end as better men.

It’s nothing short of a miracle that anything gets done in the US military on a day-to-day basis when the incompetency level is beyond astounding. I would estimate that around 20% of all military personnel are keeping the whole of the military afloat. The other 80% collects paychecks by sitting on their asses, complaining how bad things suck, and they don’t have a single clue how good they have it.

Konstantin makes an important point about having more meritoriousness in sport than we do in the military, and the reason for that is that sport is largely in private hands, whereas the military is government controlled. Private companies seek to make a profit and in order to do that they must be able to provide genuine value for their customers, which requires ability, skill, achievement (merit). Customers have to voluntarily give up money and time to trade with businesses and will only do so if what they receive in return is of greater value to them than their cash. But just contrast that with Government who take your money through taxation (i.e. through involuntary means). It doesn’t matter what service governments provide, at the end of the day they can just tax people more and more regardless of the service they provide or the values that they push across the government sector.

    • @royboy4571

Oh really, this has become a BS argument about private V government roles in our society.
Firstly, the armed defences, is not in any way, a profit seeking venture, it is concerned with defending the country, so principles of Capitalism have no relevance.
What, you want to privatise the defence forces, so the Generals are what more concerned with thier salaries than the service they provide, I mean, who would pay for it, society via .....taxes ?! I mean which nation farms out their arm forces to the private sector ?
Second, how did the privatisation of the Water system in England go !? Look it up, it is now over 30 years later and a disaster.
Of course private ownership is preferable in many industries, but in regards to many public goods and services, the profit motive is not fit for purpose, things like defence, education, health and yes water and best manged by the government.
      Its called a mixed economy.

This affects things lower down now. My son is in Air Cadets and we’ve just found out that he’s being forced to call one of his male officers ‘she’, as he now wears a skirt and has changed his name. A few months back my son started acting weird about going in, he kept making up excuses about being ill. And getting overly stressed. We’d never seen him like this. So we sat down to chat about it. It came out about the trans male. I hadn’t actually ever thought what it does to peoples psychology to be made to lie - especially children. My son is 13 and it was clearly causing him quite a lot of distress. I got so angry about what they were forcing on him. We’ve contacted unit commander to discuss, but my son has decided himself to come out altogether - he doesn’t want to join a different unit. And he’s relieved by it. Who’s h is sad really, because now he doesn’t get to do something he has dreamed about since he was little.

After the good time I had, I'm really for young people being part of the any of the cadet organisations. I think it great for them, increases your confidence, teaches you that you are calpalble of more than you think. When I was listening to the pitch, I couldn't imagine being able to do things like strip down rifles, go out on exercise and being part of an ambush. If a man cannot meet the pre-defined criteria they are simply denied entry. This has been happening for many years now and started slowly at first. @@royboy4571 I think the broader point is: Men are generally held to physical, psychological and performance standards that exist for good reason. If a man doesn't meet the standard they are simply denied entry into a position/career field. No amount of whining and crying will change the outcome. Conversely, women are frequently granted access into a wide range of positions simply because they are women AND have screamed/whined/cried about it... This is not speculative - it's a fact. Returning to a meritocracy and moving away from this DEI nonsense is the only logical course of action. How many incompetent doctors, lawyers, engineers, police officers, and military service members already walk among us? The answer is: Far too many.

I was recently on a federal court case and they forced all the prospective jurors to watch an unconscious bias video. I was the only person in the room to raise my hand and say it was unhelpful for exactly those reasons. I even brought it down to child level for them with "If I have an unconscious bias against the taste of broccoli, then nothing I can do will change how I feel about broccoli except more experiences with broccoli in novel ways, but it's as likely that those experiences could make my bias worse. Knowledge about the bias does not provide the mechanism for a change in perception, and experience with a bias does not eliminate it but potentially changes it for better or worse."
That little stunt is probably what got me picked as an alternate juror, so I had to sit through the whole process but had no input on the outcome.
I've also seen some arguments that state that bias is necessary for knowledge in the first place, which I find interesting because it coincides with studies showing that emotion is necessary to make decisions. I believe bias itself is an emotion in this context because emotions quickly condense an experience, and evaluate it to inform our decision, so we can rapidly respond to situations.

Also, spending days in DEI workshops, doing "the walk of privilege", etc., is an excellent way of not doing any work. From a consultant's perspective - the public servants were a hindrance, not a help, so doing their DEI thing was always a great opportunity to get something done.
