Steve Morse is not that bad as Ritchie's replacement. I like Ritchie more because, I mean you gotta give more respect to the man who wrote the riffs than one who can replicate them, but he covers most of Ritchie's songs really well. I don't know about Don Airey though, Ritchie Blackmore is a legend as are all Deep Purple members, but Jon Lord was such a unique musician, I think he is irreplaceable. Still Ritchie Blackmore and Brian May still have their acoustic live performances they do today. But the most talent for a live rock band today(not counting classic bands that still perform) is Muse. Matt Bellamy has a unique vocal style, mixed with some classical piano playing, and kickass guitar riffs(I say riffs because Muse isn't really about solos, they have a few kickass progressive solos, but most of the time its just the vocal melody done on guitar) Chris comes up with some of the most memorable basslines, and he is an excellent backup vocalist. Not to mention he is a one man band, he sings, he plays guitar, keyboard, bass, harmonica and drums. Dominic, doesn't sing, in terms of live performances, he only does the drums but he writes all the synth rhythms they have. I recommend you look up their song Survival live at Rome Olympic Stadium 2013, or Space Dementia live at Reading Festival 2011
I actually don't know if I agree with that statement. What I WILL agree on is that the Mark II line-up made the best records, and Blackmore's riff-writing was pretty damn integral, on that score. Don't get me wrong, Blackmore is a great guitar player, great tone, etc. But, for my money, both Tommy Bolin and Steve Morse are more impressive players, overall. But, again, from a composing standpoint, Blackmore has the mantle, so to speak; I'd honestly pick him among the five best riff writers in all of rock, and that's a GIGANTIC gift. The other four? Keef (Richards), Page, Iommi, and Hendrix. Gosh, that was surprisingly easy!
I'm not a musician, or a drummer, but when I listen to this I think Ian Paice is the leader of the group. He sets the table and has unparalleled rhythm.
Missing this passion and creativity so much in todays music! Purple was at it's best at this stage! No other band still today can get to this level!!!!
Power amp distortion, totally different to preamp distortion plus the Hammond chucks out tons of harmonics, wasn't meant to but it does! :o) Totally know what you mean, just doesn't get old as it was old to start with! LOL
Agree, and on the topic of dueling how about Gillan & Blackmore in Strange Kind Of Woman live - now I tend to fancy myself when it comes to rock music knowledge so if you can tell me of another similar kinda thingy I'd love to know as to me it is totally unique to Gillan & Blackmore or did Plant and Page do it as well...
Dear Mr. Gillan, I had the privilage of seeing you in concert when you toured the US promoting the Machine Head album. I remember the concert like it was yesterday you guys were absolutely amazing.Thank You and God Bless.
Ahhh the early 70s, weed ranged from 15 to 20 bucks an ounce, beer in the bar was a dollar or less a bottle and this kind of Rock-n-Roll stirred the soul.
Saw them live January 1973. Hitchhiked 180 miles to and back. The backup band was pre-Stevie Nick's Fleetwood Mac. One of the great days in my life. Wouldn't cross the street to see any of today's hip hop garbage.
You can do both, ya know! YOU are the instrument...ya just havta get into the technique...and play on! I can play just about any instrument there is...I'm not very good on some because I haven't spent the time. It comes down to; How bad do you want it? Spend the time and you will be rewarded. The music is in your ear/mind...Go for it!!!
What the fuck was I thinkin, this is a favorite since I was a kid, and now with this, fuck yeah, "deep purple", takes number one bad ass hands down !!!!
Deep Purple... I love them dearly and appreciate their music... this is REAL music, rare to find music like this nowadays with all the corruption in the industry.
"This is another off the new album Machine head it is out in a few weeks time" gives me chills just thinking about being there and hearing this. They didn't know at the time that it was gonna a classic album. Wish i had a dollar for everytime I listened to Machine Head, I'd be rich.
@@boing2203 Deep Purple MkII members sometimes drank lots of alcoholics, but other than with MkIII member Glenn Hughes and MkIV member Tommy Bolin, any other drugs didn't play any role then.
You are fantastic Ian there are no words to adequately express the joy and harmony you have given me over the many years. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. 🖕👍✊👏👏👏
At their peak (MACHINE HEAD lineup) fuhgedaboudit!!! So talented. Every member kicking serious butt. Tell me one thing, kids: how has the UK managed to put out soooooooooooo many GREAT musicians??? I mean, bloody hell.
After wwll as the uk rebuilt there was a big push on the youth going to art schools instead of heading to dead end industrial jobs. Then the kids got hip to american blues and rock n roll. It was a perfect storm. The Beatles hit and the rest is history......
Yeah during that time black Americans had already moved on to soul music, motown, etc...and white Americans were either still doing the Elvis style of rock, country or surf rock--so the Brits took old blues music made by older black Americans and flipped it into their own version of blues/rock and it went huge.
Too bad Deep Purple didn't get into the rock and roll hall of fame while Jon Lord was still alive. They better start inducting more quickly because they won't be around for their own inductions. This was great watching this.I am 63 and have loved them from the beginning.

I disagree ! I would consider it an honor to sell millions and millions of records and get snubbed by the rock hall ! The fans know who's great and who isn't !
This is just as good as it gets. Live music, played by real musicians, rock, blues and organic. Skill levels of all of the legends that are playing is up in the clouds. They were in the wave of British rock bands that paved the way. Deep Purple, Led Zep and Black Sabbath. Now looked upon as an era that will never happen again, simply because these guys had to learn their instruments. Everyone wants to play in a couple of hours these days. And that's why music like this will never happen again.
Ian Gillan is an awesome singer. Every member of this band is great at what they do. Paice is a drummer's drummer. Blackmore is great. The late Jon Lord smokes that Hammond.
I drank w/Roger Glover at the Pit Stop a bar in lakewood nj. and was grabbed in a headlock by Ian Gillan at a Judas Priest concert in the late 80"s ,so cool .Rock n Roll man.
This band rocked. Real musicians playing. Not corporate producers.
Three rock bands that owned the 70s ...the purple were the top ...I grew up on this sound.
Man, I miss musicians who could actually play and sing. Long live long haired party rock!

Ritchie Blackmore was the best guitarist this band ever had. The groove! The style! The coolness! Nobody has matched him! NOBODY!
He'd been with your wifey or what?

I was 16 when this came out. Great timing Mom and Dad!
I can't get enough of that distorted sinister Hammond B3 organ dueling with Ritchie Blackmore on his Strat
Rather unique, isn´t it....? ;-)
Power amp distortion, totally different to preamp distortion plus the Hammond chucks out tons of harmonics, wasn't meant to but it does! :o) Totally know what you mean, just doesn't get old as it was old to start with! LOL
I love it rock on mike
lord ran his hammond through a marshall stack also to be able to hold a stick next to blackmore.

I'm happy that young people are getting a hold of this. It hit me when I was 16 (WAY back!). Long live rock!

Deep Purple mark 2! The best one...
Heavy metal with a soul. Electric music will never again be what it was in the 70s.
Glen Agree with you but it’s Heavy Rock, have always disliked the change to Metal, even Ozzy hates the term.
I just love the guy's comment saying, person,"You can't rock out on a Hammond B3," Jon Lord, "hold my beer" true classic
The whole band was fantastic. Jon Lord was a monster on the Hammond B3.
Deep Purple - a band's band.
High and chilling with music that new generation will never understand or know about how awesome those times was

"Lazy" is a fantastic, forgotten blues-rock gem that goes beyond Ten Years After into an organ-orgasmic galaxy.
Beyond "Religion" by TYA ? Well I love TYA for who they are/were anyway. Rock and Roll Music to the World is an unknown gem of an album...
No necessary lights, or escenary or fireworks...just pure and 24k rock !!
..the "Ian scream" one of my very favorite things of all time

Every great band has their musical masterpiece..... this is one of those.
R.B. you are the king! A sound that can't be copied Sir!!!
Rhythm and blues, loves it, and they nailed it
Saw this lineup twice in the 70s and they fecking nailed it - no backing tracks and miming in those days.
