I miss the old songs. I feel like I'm going to a concert sometimes. Where you have to keep your eyes open to keep up. Instead of closing your eyes and singing to God the simple words like "yes Lord, yes Lord, from the bottom of my heart to the depth of my soul, oh yes Lord".

I am definitely a mix when it comes to my worship music. I grew up in the 80's and 90's when the whole praise and worship had started taking over. Those are songs that have had high influence on me personally. I didn't really start learning the hymns until I was in bible college when I got my first hymnal for a required class. The more I learn them, the more I love them. The Lord called me to be a church pianist when I was 13. He made the way for that to happen. He lead me to a church where I could train for what I do now. I'm a church pianist in a church that sings the hymns every service. It's true, the hymns can make my hardest days easier. My coworkers could tell you I sing a lot at work.... normally either a hymn or a pre-2005 worship/praise song. This year I started doing live videos where I select a hymn to play. It has floored me that people are watching these that I have no idea about until they bring it up in person to person conversation. The Lord is so good and I'm so thankful that He chose to use music in my life to bless others

I so heartily agree with Mark Lowry. I have an old soul and have been told that many a times. Yet I still will sing the new songs but would love to hear the songs from my youth and the songs my parents and grandparents used to sing. Those are the songs that get me through the most difficult days when they happen and the sorrow and the joys in my life. Let's not forget the hymns for they are valuable for getting you through life.

He is right! Today's churches don't sing hymns anymore. Fortunately, I do go to a church where they do. I celebrate the Lord in sign language to the old hymns! I've done Blessed Assurance, In the Garden and it feels so good! Let's sing to the Lord!

I am grateful to say that I am a born again Christian and have been since I was 19.......I praise God for my dear precious and of course hilarious and nutty Mark Lowry!!!!!! and all the Gaither Vocal Band also just every man or woman sold out to Jesus in many ways!!!!!! I pray for their ministry and that God would fill all their hearts with much obedience and strength to much glorify the wonderful name of Jesus Christ in all they say and do!!!!! To God Be All The Glory!!!!! however folks if you don’t know Christ as your savior then it burdens my soul to think that you are headed for a terrible place called Hell where the Bible says the fire is never quenched and the worm dies not! Folks you are not promised tomorrow! If you want to know how to be saved from this horrible reality then please by all means don’t hesitate to comment right back so I can lead you to the savior! 2 Corinthians 6:2 clearly states “now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation!” And Hebrews 3:15 clearly states, “Today if you hear his voice don’t harden your hearts! It is not me but the Holy Spirit that I pray reveals to you the truth of his precious gospel......John 3:16 says for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes on him will not perish but have everlasting life! V 17 says then V 18 says whoever believes on the son is not condemned but whoever does not believe on the son is condemned already because he has not believed on the son whom God has sent! Also Acts 16:30-31 what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house I am not threatening anyone but just warning them what will happen if they reject this precious gift of eternal life! Christ died a horrible criminals death! He was beaten brutally mocked spit upon and endured countless hours of torture pain for all of our sins! Ppl go to hell because they reject that pardon for their sins! And Jesus is saying to them in Matthew 25:41 depart from me you cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! Hell was only prepared for Satan and his angels! It is not God who threatens anyone it is the craziness of rejecting the free pardon of salvation! It’s like if you’re in court you’ve committed a crime say you murdered someone! Now if you say to that Judge hey I know I’ve done a terrible thing of murdering that person but I hear you’re a good judge and so I know you’ll be fair to me...... the judge is going to reply well yes you’re right about one thing I am a good judge and because I’m a good judge I’m going to see to it that you’re punished and that justice is served! Well then all of a sudden someone you don’t even know comes forward and says you know what I know he’s committed the crime he’s committed and he deserves to go to jail but I really don’t want to see him go to prison so I’ll just go to prison for him so he can go free! So if you accepted that offer you’d be free to leave the courtroom but if you didn’t well you’d be crazy and go to prison yourself! Well that’s exactly how it was 2,000 years ago! He is God in human flesh and he came to this earth lived a perfect sinless life and even though he knew that we had sinned and because of our sins deserved to die miserably but he said no I don’t want to see them suffer so I will go and take their punishment for them! Even though he did absolutely nothing wrong still he chose to take the punishment for our sins so we can be set free from the power bondages and consequences of our disobedience to God! Romans 5:8 says For God commends his love toward us that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us! 1 John 2:2 says he was made to be the propitiation for our sins! And not just for our sins but the sins of the whole world! 2 Corinthians 5:21 He who knew no sin became Sin for us that we would be made his righteousness! The truth is if you had to get to Heaven by your own effort then you cannot do it! Because Romans 3:10 says there is not one that does good! No Not One! Romans 3:23 says For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God! Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death! But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our lord! But the good news is Romans 10:9 If we confess with our mouth and believes in our hearts that Christ died for our sins then was raised from the dead we will be saved! V 10 For it’s with the heart we believe and it’s with the mouth confession is made unto salvation! God gave us 10 commandments to follow and we’ve broken every one of them! And because God is a good God he cannot allow our disobedience to him to go unpunished! Well then like I just mentioned above his son Jesus stepped forward and said no I don’t want to see them punished so I will take their punishment for them! And also like I said he died a terrible substitute criminal’s death for us on a cross so now all we have to do is accept that payment for our sins and we can escape the terrible wrath of God that is to fall on them who do not accept this atonement that was sacrificed for our sins! Praise the lord Romans 10:13 says Whoever calls on the name of the lord shall be saved! And 1 Peter 1:4 you’re an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you! Christ clearly said in John 14:6 I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the father but through me! Acts 4:12 clearly states that there is no other name given unto Heaven or earth by which we must be saved as there is salvation in no other! Jesus clearly states that there is clearly only one way to Salvation and it’s him that’s it! There is no other way! God Bless everyone who reads!

This so ministered to me. I feel like I’m the only one in all these churches who long for my Baptist hymnal roots. I don’t say much about this I keep it to myself because I really don’t want to be a disruptive sister in Christ but lately it is really bothering me. I feel just like you said Kirk just watching someone else perform. I look at those around me and they are barely singing mostly just swaying back and forth. There’s no life in the songs we sing. Very somberly. The worst was Easter not one resurrection song I about died. My parents (who have both passed away) would be beside themselves. Anyway it’s nice to know I’m not the only one out there that misses the solid teaching and faith anchoring hymns.

I agree!! As a new(er) believer (became a believer about 7 years ago at age 35), I was sad that so many churches don’t include the hymns because I didn’t grow up with them so I didn’t know them and I wanted to learn them!. We did find a (more old fashioned) church that we love now that does both. It does lack a bit of the pep and younger families that the newer, more “hip” concert-like worship ones have. But we chose the church family and teaching over that. No church is perfect but I absolutely agree that we should not throw out the older wonderful hymns. So many have such interesting back stories and were born out of much sorrow and true trust in the Lord.

I love the hymns. When the praise/worship songs began coming into the church it was difficult for me personally. Instead of rejecting the new, I chose to listen to as much of the new material I could so I would feel more comfortable with the material. Change is difficult, yet necessary for growth. I really enjoy when our church leaders blend both styles during the service. Thanks for sharing your insights.

    Our victory is already won
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart

Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light
Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art
High King of heaven, my victory won
    May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun

The Hymns...were the contemporary Christian music of their day. The Great Great ones live on. It was the same with 70s 80s and 90s Christian music ... It will be the same with Today's worship music.
Let's stop making it like Hymns ARE scripture. Scripture based ? Sure many are. But so are many of today's songs.
God is STILL Speaking to Christian Musicians TODAY !!!
THE REASON Blessed assurance and Hymns speak to some is that what they 1st heard when Jesus became important to them.
I don't like when people try to make Hymns bigger and better than Today.
It's where you came from !!!
But YES play the GREAT ones !!!
    Don't assume some of Today's song won't Become a Great one !!

Here's some of the verses saying you can and some will fall away.
    1 Timothy 4:1
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,
    Hebrews 6:4-6
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit,
5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,
6 if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.
    Revelation 2:4-5
4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent.
    Hebrew 3:12-19
    12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;
13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,
15 while it is said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."
16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?
17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?
18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?
19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
    Mathew 24:10-13
And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.
11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.
12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.
13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
    2 Peter 2:20-22
For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.
21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.
22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: "A dog returns to his own vomit," and, "a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire."
A message they need to preach in every church in America and the world.
Google bible fall away and see how many bible verses that come up that you can fall and people will fall away.
A little leaven leavens the whole lump.
    1 Corinthians 5:1
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles that a man has his father's wife!
Paul said to deliver such a one to satan for the destruction of flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
Later the person repented and didn't have his father's wife anymore and was allowed to stay.
    1 Corinthians 5:9-11
I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexual immoral people.10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
Churches, pastors, and the Body of Christ is allowing people shacking up, divorced and remarried and not allowed, guys, homosexual drag queens, witchcraft, tarot card readers, free masons that worship lucifer the great architect, idolaters, sexual immorality, covetous etc to leaven the whole lump and we allow it.
Yes, you come as you are a sinner, you don't stay that way. And if you do we are to deliver them to Satan for the destruction of the flesh.
Pretty plain to me from the scriptures.
DO what you are supposed too, tell your pastors to do their job.
Tell the Body of Christ to do their jobs.
    Repent and follow Jesus!
You come as an adulterer, drug addict, drug dealer, prostitute, witchcraft don't stay that way and keep sinning, sitting in the church, leavening the whole church, infecting the church with sin causing yourself and others to possibly fall away. Repent or the church will deliver you to Satan for the destruction of the flesh.

We do need to bring back the great old hymns with the new choruses. We need to change up the worship from time to time. It is becoming tedious with a constant redundancy and roaring. The imitating culture or seeker-sensitive is failing. People thirst for authenticity and power of the Spirit. Not power of sub-woofers, lighting and smoke machines. They can get that same thrill from a local pub. The Ekklesia needs to be innovators not world imitators. We are the salt and should be different from the world we flavor.

I didn't think it was about us. I thought it was about what God likes. He is a God of variety. I would think He likes different kinds of worship music. People all over the world worship Him with different types of music. Many of the new songs are scripture taken directly from the Bible & put to music. Holy Spirit will inspire people to write music until Jesus returns. Hymns are great! A lot of the new music is great! Much of the new music is sung to Him, not about Him.

Everyone is already saved. Jesus died on the cross for all. Jesus suffered in our place for all. Jesus rose from the dead for all. Christians have it wrong about Jesus saving only those who believe in him. Jesus loves everyone and he saved everyone that he ever created. This is the Good News that Jesus told us to tell all the world. Your loved ones and anyone who did not receive Christ in this lifetime were saved by Christ on that great day. All are saved whether Christians preach that non believers are going to hell. Jesus will send no one to hell and no one can put themselves in hell.

A small number of well known online Grace churches I listen to , have awful 'Christian' singers and bands singing and playing 'noise' . It's the only way I can describe it .
40 minutes or more of so called worship music , before a brief message or sermon .
Those pastors need to rethink how they do praise and worship .
Reintroduce melodic , traditional hymns where the congregation join in .
Stop the guitar strumming and synthases and banging drums .
If I had to listen to that stuff in heaven , I'd be thinking what must hell be like.
It does nothing but irritate and annoy me .
