July 4th Fireworks was very tough on Walle our German Shorthaired Pointer this year.

Me of a hurricane we lived through both in the tub and she would make sounds of wimpering or crying to the sounds of wind, rain, thunderstorm and noise from outside. Would not relax and on alert the whole time. Wish out dogs wouñd understand its okay..... Hate them suffering like that

Zazu is so amazing! He doesn't give a damn to the fireworks! All that matters to him is food. I love Zazu so much, especially his loving eyes. Poor Walle, so scared of fireworks. Fortunately he's got a caring mum to comfort him. Love n kisses to all of you.
Haha Zazu is not bothered at all. We went to watch fireworks at Lake Tahoe and he was not a big amused by the beautiful lights lol
Awe. Poor Walle. My lab used to pace all night long. ALL night. Came to a point I'd ask for next day off work. My boy was so terrified.

My baby is the same but once they start going crazy he just wants to get away from it because he gets annoyed 😭 I also think my gsp thinks iM uncomfortable and is trying to comfort me

My dog is the same way. I tried distracting him with playing catch and stuff, but it didn't work at all. He kept going and hiding. In the end, I sat with him under the tablet until the fireworks ended and talked to him. It was not fun. I couldn't even take him for his evening walk. This effects veterans as well, I know my grandfather hated fireworks. He used to go to the bathroom and lock himself in.

@MVP_dev My GSP doesn't flinch when birds flush and shotguns are fired but is really affected by fireworks. I think there's a distinct difference in frequency and also the intrusion of fireworks noise in their "safe" place (home) creates cognitive dissonance. Next year, we'll be in the basement doing some really loud projects with power tools and music in the background, or we will be camping in remote backcountry. They all have different personalities and histories...
The city I used to live in had an ordinance on how long and what time fireworks can be let off. Only for an hour and a half starting at 10pm. Only 30 minutes for new years. Look into the laws in your city. Where I live now, no such laws and I dislike it.
I feel your pain Walle! My neighbors behind my house where blowing up fireworks all night long that I ended up escaping and almost got hit by a car. Thankfully my hooman saves me just in time and took me inside.

Poor little guy! I've had dog's before that were terrified of fireworks and it's so upsetting to see them so distressed. The song that was playing throughout was lovely, if people were more like dogs the world would be a much better and kinder place 🥰

My hound hated the 4th. Our vet gave her xanax which at least calmed her down. I think dogs are always incredibly aware. Wonderful job caring for Walle, Mama!

ZAZU and Walle are sooo different but they’re the best brothers ever !!!
You should give him a thunder buddy! It’s a compression vest that is supposed to calm doggos during loud noises. It worked wonders for our Shih Tzu growing up. He was super afraid of loud noises, like fireworks and thunder. It wasn’t a 100% cure, but he was at least able to stay calm enough not to run for the hills every time we opened the door.
So sorry baby 😭😭. I have had numerous dogs like this and nothing I do would help 😩😩😭😭. Thank goodness all four of my dogs are not afraid.
Zazu has never had any issues, actually he enjoys watching fireworks. Hopefully Walle gets more comfortable too

I love you sweet Walle 💗. I'm so sorry that those horrible fireworks 🎆 scare you. I go through the same thing with my babies, and I have to lay down on the floor to comfort them 😔. I will not leave them until the fireworks are over. Even if I have to sleep 💤 😴 on the floor with them. It also happens when there are ⛈ 🌩 thunderstorms. It breaks 💔 my heart every time they go through this. Zazu you are so brave. I love you too 😘sweetheart.
Playing music helps it's so loud to dogs. My friend plays fireworks on TV so to prepare her dogs to the point they don't care. ❤️

Zazu, like a normal Retriever is not afraid of fireworks, and has empathy for Walle, which is wonderful. As I have post earlier my Retriever is afraid of loud sounds (and water. Won't retrieve and kills small animals(he even eats mice))
It really does tug at my heart strings and watching Walle's face has tears streaming down my face actually all my different dogs did the same thing at one time with fireworks and thunderstorms they would make a bee line for me for security
Its really hard to watch our pups scared like that.

Awww, bless his heart. I rescued a hunting dog (Coonhound) & that poor dog was scared to death of fireworks, guns & big men with beards. He had been seriously abused & it was so sad. He was the sweetest dog in the world. Sadly, he passed away at 15 but the last 6 years of his life when i had him were the best!

Poor Walle. We certainly felt for him. Our GSP ,Maverick, had the same problem with fireworks, thunder was even worse. He even hated the popping of champagne corks! Some gundog!
Our Blue Heeler, Rosie, was the opposite. She insisted on being outside barking at the noise, whilst Mav' cowered under the bed.
Forgot to add, Zazu obviously doesn't like pancakes.
Ohh noo! Its hard to see the pups so scared. And yes, I think Walle would be scared of the sound of champagne corks too.

When you are telling Walle it is OK when he is afraid of something like the fireworks in his mind you are telling him it is OK to be afraid of the fireworks. You are actually reinforcing a behavior that you don't want. The best way to handle a situation like that is to distract him with something that is fun for him, something that he likes.
Oh yes.. we played with the ball around the house too. It seemed to help to some extent but it was absolutely crazy how much and how loud the fireworks were. The craziest so far.

This is not true. I know you mean well but please read proper research about it. I am studying to become a dog trainer and I've done enough reading to tell you how you cannot reinforce fear in a dog by petting him. She is talking to him in a calm voice and petting him gently. This is absolutly ok. IF you are able to distract him by playing or training the better, but some dogs will be in so much panic that the only thing you can do is try to sooth them.
Sorry- not intending to be offensive but fear is a negative behavior for a dog. “Soothing is a Positive reinforcement for a negative behavior.
@@matildecosta9679 You have a lot to learn if you think you are soothing the dog instead of reinforcing an unwanted behavior. I am speaking from having 30+ years experience as a dog trainer not as someone that is just studying to become one.
I have been watching your videos for quite some time now...and I must say that Zazu is the most chilled kinda dog i have ever seen...He just minds his own business and don't give a sh*t to what's happening around. He's only seen active when you say Food !!!! I want a doggo like zaaaazzzuuuuu 😂😂

It's hard to see how your favorite pet's are terrified from fireworks.I live with 2 sister cats.Every New years eve and Forth of July the fireworks go off they come unglued and dive under my bed.I love my 2cats as you your dogs ❣️😁
aww I feel so bad for Walle! Olaf our GSP and Gotze our Dobe are unbothered by fireworks but our Rottie Orin is absolutely terrified of them, guess each dog is different. Hope Walle's feeling better now and Zazu's such a sweetie for trying to make his brother feel better. Love you, guys!
Even my Zoey used to struggle during Diwali. She will become stressed ,disoriented going in and out asking us to open verandah! When you do that she will return back! Seeing Wally reminds me of those memories!

Yes my Sinja is terrified of fireworks, gun shots any loud noises!! Thunderstorms are the worst!! We have to give her Trazadone from the vet to calm her. She pants and paces and try to get in any small space!!
Walle has gotten better over the years. We try to keep him engaged and play with him as much as possible, it kind of helps.
Yes sometimes with Sinja that helps most of the time she has to go in my son and daughter in laws room with my son and just snuggle with him that gives her comfort.

My Weimaraner hates fireworks too! He is also afraid of them. We have a walk in closet in our bedroom, so we put his bed in there at night and he sleeps in there and feels safe. But he really hates New Years Eve and July 4th. Too many booms and bangs!
My nephew's gsp HATED fireworks! But his present dog a Labrador could care less about them. Yours are so beautiful and sweet! All u can do is comfort walle but he'll get better over time.

Hi! My first GSP (that’s now in heaven and that I loved so much) was also afraid of fireworks. He was always hiding in the closet or in the bathtub trembling of fear. I learned with the years that you must act normally when they are events like this. Kissing them, trying to cuddle and calm, talking to them like this will only add to their anxiety. With the two GSP that I have now I act normal like there is nothing, no sound of fireworks or thunder. They are absolutely not afraid. One was even watching the fireworks on the patio and the other was sleeping on the sofa.

Thanks Sophie. We have tried different ways to work around it. We do play with the ball and hide treats around the house to keep his mind occupied but that only last a little while. He tries to stick to us and hide and my motherly instincts only knows to say its okay and comfort him when that happens. We will keep trying though 🙂
