I bought one of the new Chinese Fender Modern Player basses a couple years ago. The pickups are so hot I have to plug into my active plug. But.... The tone is what I have been looking for for so many years. All in a $400 bass which I bought used for $300. It makes me want to buy the real deal and get an old Fender Telecaster bass. I absolutely love the tone of a Telecaster bass with only the neck pickup played with a pick.
I have 78 Tele bass. I'm using this with flat-wound strings. I thought Tele-bass was nice for direct line recording when I wanted old school sound. Because the sound is not so stringy and it can get enough bass without amps. On my YT page,I used it on some of my videos. Very useful. Good job!!
Fender did away with the three bolt neck plate but utilized the Micro - tilt adjustment on some of their guitars after 1983. I like the three bolt neck plate and the Micro- tilt adjustment being that i'm a big fan of seventies Strats. I think the 70's Strats are the epitome of evolution and innovation but in that era the company didn't have the level of craftsmanship they had before 1965 nor were their quality control department up to snuff so during the seventies some their products were either well made or some were under sighted lemons!!
Sold my blonde for $175.00 ib 1970 to a friend who was starting a band. It's probably sitting in that guys garage for the last 40 years. I didn't use it as I was in my Rickenbacker phase, as many bassists go through, but we learn....
A little trivia here. When Verdine White started playing, he used a Telecaster Bass that he literally "played all the sound out of it" (his words) before going to the '73 Jazz.
Hey, is the Squier reissue any good? I know it won't be as good as the original Fender, but is it worth it for a seccond bass. the one I have now is a Ibanez GSR200 and I want a different, muddier tone. I've heard it is as loud as an active bass, but is that really true? And I am thinking of a Squier tele bass because I like the old school vibe.
Hey Davey. I just picked up a 1976 Musicmaster in great condition. It has 2 Dimarzio Jazz bazz pickups on it.Man oh man it sounds great! I was wondering how hard/expensive it would be to put a 3 way toggle on it to isolate the pickups. so I can get neck, bridge or both?
Dave, wondering if you can do a bit of research on this. Verdine White started out on a Tele Bass, but it had a steel control plate that curved with the contour of the body. Would you know if the Tele Bass had a stock setup like that?
BassmanII - I realize this is an old thread, (I'm here because I'm doing some pre-purchase research on this era of the Tele bass). And I'm not trolling or picking a fight. Tele basses have a 'slab body'. No belly cut, no forearm cut... Just a flat piece (pieces) of wood. So there should be no radius to the steel control plate...right?
I like the tone. It sounds a bit like an upright bass. Is that due to the mute in the cover? It sounds kind of in between a fretted and a fretless bass. Really Cool!
Hey, I got this idea and wanted some feedback to see if it is possible and practical. So I read about John Entwistle's Fenderbird bass (thunderbird body and hardware with fender neck), and I thought it would be cool to do it with an Explorer bass. But the other thing is, I was thinking it might be cool to have a gibson Mudbucker in between the normal mini humbuckers. could it be done, would it be cool, and would it be versatle.
in my 10 yrs of Fender devotion I have yet to come across a original Tele bass(like your with the humbucker at the neck)but have played a shit load of the Squier model with the humbucker jammy, have you played or heard one and if so how close does it come to sounding vaugely like the original,I dont expect a carbon copy but is it worth grabbing one and tossing in a up-graded pickup ? please if you can assist I would appreciate it.
Actually the three bolt neck plate was a 70's CBS idea to save money. They first did it on the Tele-bass then in 75 started doing it on Strat's and Jazz basses, before they released it was a dumb idea and three weren't enough to stablize the neck. ..... I nearly bought on of these in 72 they have great necks.
+Dave's World of Fun Stuff ...... I'm guessing you're referring to my comment on the three bolt necks? ...... That was the response to something that was said in the video. .... Just my opinion of a design flaw, that they did change.
+Stephen Robinson Next time you're around one grab the neck at the nut with one hand and the body with the other and pull it from side to side. (Easier done than explained.) And you can actually see the neck shift enough for the strings to come off the fretboard where the neck meets the body. ..... Most modern instruments have up to six bolts holding the neck in place, so they went in the exact opposite direction than the three bolt. .....
@davey4557 so if your theory is true, I could make a Frankenstein bass out of a 70's style tele bass with an older 50s single coil and a musicman hb in the bridge? cause that would be bad ass.
Thank you. I was looking at severall reissue versions. And some of those are 32 inch scale. Wich kinda put me off. As it needs to be a backup bass... And my current 6 string Dean Q Edge confuses due to 35 inch scale and different string spacing than my Precision....
Errrr, dat's "Dem Changes" ......lol...... back in 74' I came home one afternoon to find Buddy (Miles) hittin' on my Old lady....... !! I said;" Listen man, what fookin' idiot hits on a guy's chic IN HIS OWN HOUSE ! "........
Every single Fender bass should have a Telecaster headstock and Hipshot untralight USA aluminum tuners. Any new bass that has even the slightest hint of neck dive, should immediately cease to exist, period. There's simply no excuse.

That’s a gorgeous bass. I’m seriously jealous....

That is one of the best looking and best sounding basses I have ever seen and heard. WOW!
cool stuff man
keep up those cool demos
Arthur Kane from the New York dolls used one of these basses as well as the Thunderbird you can definitely hear the Low end !
string-through and a humbucker - no wonder it growls like a Gibson T-bird
Your Telecaster Bass sounds awesome, monster tone!
Very cool bass. I've played one before and that pickup rocks!
Relic Telebass+TI's+pick=tone heaven
My Peavey Foundation has the tilt neck feature. I love that bass. The super ferrite pick ups are monsters.
I own an origional one of these blonde with a chandler mirror pickguard. Love the thing!
I love this bass.

So, dave, what's your opinion on the two saddle bridge?
A little trivia here. When Verdine White started playing, he used a Telecaster Bass that he literally "played all the sound out of it" (his words) before going to the '73 Jazz.
It is not a fender humbucker pick up. It is in fact the precision split pick under a chrome cover, i have one of these in my collection of bits.
The Dodge Challenger 440 Hemi of basses!
Whoa...I love tele guitars...if I played bass I'd want one of those
‘Tis a thing of beauty.
I have one of the original humbuckers. Was thinking of putting it in a parts bass. What pots and cap would you suggest?
Cool clip. What are the necks like on those? Are they more like Precisions or more like Jazzes?
Billy Cox was playing a single coil p-bass on Cavett.

Suena igual a un clásico, el mismo tono
I love these Fender Basses.
Tried the Squire and liked it so much contacted USACG to make a roasted ash/maple version....OT here i come.
Great looking bass you have there.
I'm wondering if this is a humbucker or a P pickup in the chrome casing. Looking at the poles.
this bass makes me happy :)
Please do more demos like this

That exactly the bass i want. Thx for the review

i have a 72 tele and itsa reliable but heavy beast. i love yours cuz of the color scheme.

Nice vid . What are they worth to buy?
Back when they made real bass guitars!
What song are you playing at 2:34? I heard Jaco Pastorius play it before, not sure if he made that riff.
@davey4557 so if your theory is true, I could make a Frankenstein bass out of a 70's style tele bass with an older 50s single coil and a musicman hb in the bridge? cause that would be bad ass.
I thought they switched back to four-bolt mountings because the three-bolt system wasn't solid enough.
Great bass!
What camera are you using?
@davey4557 I think it was Sylvain. Arthur (God bless his soul) was tall enough lol.
Didn't you end up selling this bass? How much did it go for? I really like vintage tele basses but they're way out of my price range.
Why does the truss rod stick out of the end of the headstock instead of sitting flat in the hole? Is that an old fender kimd of thing?
METALMAN2501 its what they did in the 70s
Nice Bass.
@davey4557 So could it be done?
Thank you.
Anyone know where I can get a pickup like that?
damn.. iwant one..where can i find one? :)
Arthur Kane of New York Dolls fame played one of these.
How much?
Might be interested. (:
Is this a 34 inch scale instrument?
Thank you. I was looking at severall reissue versions. And some of those are 32 inch scale. Wich kinda put me off. As it needs to be a backup bass... And my current 6 string Dean Q Edge confuses due to 35 inch scale and different string spacing than my Precision....
I've never seen a tele bass or guitar with a cut out on the top of the body before :S

Poor demo but amazing bass
