i am a harmonica player,i steal riffs and runs from sax players all the time. this is by far the most useful lesson. i would like to thank you Scott ! junior Vegas
Man.....I can't overestimate how helpful that video was to me. I have been listening to Maceo for years and trying to work out what makes him so funky and what makes that G and G overtone sound. Thanks Scott, that was brilliant
You are great a playing funk and also a excellent instructor on funk.Got to say I have listened to over 5000 videos cause I love music but. I think this YOU are Great at playing. That Funk style and teaching it so well...Maceo Parker is my other favorite saxophone player... Thank you
Sigo todos tus videos... Muy buen profesor, felicitaciones,, mi problema es el Inglés, hablo español, pero trato de aprender todo lo posible.. Cordiales saludos y gracias por tus tutoriales....
Definitely something to try in a few months (53 starting with this _Sax_ a couple of months ago) when I progress past my book 1,2,3,... Who knows!? But funk is my roots on bass and I had been around (haha) Have to sax lists: tenor sax & lessons to learn. You are btw one of my top free instructors in this media. Thanks for sharing the wealth of knowledge. You make learning encouraging challenging and as mentioned before your progressions are wonderfully explained. I play (own) only Tenor horn but the l Material is equally important for any horn. Keep up the great teachings!
Man you just confirmed my whole style, without me evening Knowing what I was doing lol...My wife costantley askes me why do I play choppy? Now I know that Im more of a Funk, Player I know what to work on , as well as switching it up to different stlyes every now and then
First scale I learned and memorized on my Tenor was D F G Ab A C D I can run up and down it and make it sound cool but I can’t play around with it in the way you’re so easily demonstrating in this video. Pretty cool!
Hey Nick, check out the improv section in my Sax School. You'll be improvising with your scales in no time at all! Here's the link if you want to check it out: www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com
Hey SCOTT PADDOCK!! I watched your How To Funk-i-fy your alto sax phrases -- I thought that perhaps you would mention the use of "vibrato" technique in your funk articulation. Don't know if "vibrato" is the correct term in this application...but there is definitely a aspect of vibrato here.
Thanks Joe! That is a plan for the near future. Right now, I'm concentrating on building an audience. Once I hit around 10K followers I'm going to start doing specialized courses.
Great video! Only been playing a few months and what to play a funk style but it has always eluded me. One watch of this video and I'm throwing out some funk riffs! Any recommendations for a backing track to practice over?
This was incredibly helpful! Thanks man! I’ve never played the saxophone & I’m considering getting a bamboo saxophone as an entry into playing in a style like this. Have you had any experience with such an instrument?
Very cool, that was insanely good. I always wanted to know how people get that David Sanborn sound. Is it mostly technique, or do you also need a special mouthpiece?
Scott, Great job! Question: Where or how to use pentatonics scales? that was the route I took for improvisacion but I see you use blue scales and the result I would say is better. So how the pentatonics fit in all this? Thank you
Hey David, they are similar. The blues scale just sounds cooler because of the b5. Funk style is funk style, so you can use all of the same concepts but just apply them to the pentatonic scale, but because you don't have that tritone (b5) it isn't going to sound as gritty. It will sound more scale-y (if that's a word. haha)
You can do either. If I'm playing a G blues scaled I would think C# just because I like to think C# more than Db. Same with F# and Gb in the key of C. But you can call it either a #4 or b5.
Hmmm, sounds like a gear problem to me. Assuming your reed is on correctly (if not, check out my video on that) then something is going on with your sax, is it hard to blow? Could you get a good sound before? Feel free to send me a private message from my website.
@@ScottPaddock alright thanks man. I talked to my band teacher today and I got a new tenor. he says some of his handouts had issues, and this new one that i got sounds a lot better. Still am not that good though hahaha
Hi Scott, great videos. Could you show us a sax alto solo for chain of fool from Aretha. I play sax into a rock band and I would like to impress the audience. Thank you in advance.
Great video!! This is exactly what I have been searching a long time for!!
Great! Thanks. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks! Yeah, once you understand a few of the techniques, bringing the funk out gets way easier.

I just got home from the tour on Tuesday. I'm planning it all out right now. Should be up and running in about 3 months.

Hi Cory. No, I've never heard of a bamboo sax. Just recorders.
Could you, please, write what you played? It sounds great 👍
It's improv. All made up on the spot. It was never written out.
Thank you
thanks for sharing👍👍👍
Super Video. Thanks a lot😊

this is actually good advice Ksaxman
Very cool, that was insanely good. I always wanted to know how people get that David Sanborn sound. Is it mostly technique, or do you also need a special mouthpiece?
95% technique. 5% gear
Amazing!
Thanks Derek!

What's the difference between thinking of it as a flat 5? I always think of a blues scale as having a flat 5 not a sharp 4
You can do either. If I'm playing a G blues scaled I would think C# just because I like to think C# more than Db. Same with F# and Gb in the key of C. But you can call it either a #4 or b5.
I play tenor and the only sound i can get is the one that my bike makes when i hit the brakes. idk what to do at this point
Hmmm, sounds like a gear problem to me. Assuming your reed is on correctly (if not, check out my video on that) then something is going on with your sax, is it hard to blow? Could you get a good sound before? Feel free to send me a private message from my website.

great, how do you get the high notes clear, i got peeps notes, maybe my mouthpiece is not so good
Hi, what you mean with playing your 8 notes « straight » ?
Not swinging them like in a jazz style
Listen and transcribe. Joe Farrell, Stanley Turrentine, Lenny Pickett for starters.
Those are great funk players.
What kind of reed and size of mouth pc and brand?
Legere Signature 2.25 and Barkley Brazil Kustom Pop 7 blue
thanks a lot
You have a nice tone whats your setup
Hey! All my gear is listed in my description.
Where did you buy your mouthpiece?
Barkley Brazil sent it to me along with a couple others to try. When I played the Kustom Pop 7 I loved it and have been playing it ever since.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Scoot, what is eight notes? Can you explain it?
Eighth notes are when you have 2 notes per 1 beat. They are counted: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &. I think some languages call them semi-quavers.
❤❤❤
En español.
Hay algo para Latinoamérica .
