Yes, drugs claimed another victim, at the young age of 37

My best friend passed yesterday morning at the tender age of 34. Unexpectedly. He loved Brent like his own brother. Brent was who he modeled himself.after in alot.of ways. Crushed is an understatement
"Shakedown Street" was originally mocked by old school Dead Heads as "Disco Dead", but after a little while it became an anthem, and the name for the vending area in the parking lot.
A lot of ' Heads didn't want Donna in the group either, but on this song, and other songs from this album and I think Terrapin, I miss hearing her voice when they play them in the following years.
@@timbeatty8411 I agree fully. And hey, we may be old, but we're not dead yet! ✌😎🤙

Shakedown street + lsd = magic galore. Jerry raining down the siund with thunder and lightning and color. Lighting thr song with sense and color, holding away despair.
I am so thrilled, Biz, that you are getting into the Dead. Once their music touches a special part of your soul, there's no going back. I always thought the Shakedown Street from Chicago, 6/22/91, was the best I ever heard - with Vince Welnick taking the reins after Brent's death, and Bruce Hornsby helping out, partially because my late husband and I were there, about the 30th row, standing on those rickety old chairs on the field and dancing our asses off, and mostly because I thought it was just a kickass version, but, dang! This version is really superb too. Very Phil heavy and great keyboard. We were at Brent's last show at Tinley Park, Illinois. He played a lullaby for his daughter. So sad, how could we know that was going to be it? A horrible shock. I wish him peace 🌹 Never heard this one before and enjoyed it immensely. Nice job, Biz, looking forward to more. ❤❤❤ RIP 🥀 Jerry and Pigpen, Brent and Vince ❤❤❤
Here is the link to the ‘74 original version of “Fire on the Mountain” Mickey wrote this 5 years before “Rappers Delight” he was always into other cultures music and Rhythm etc. So no doubt he picked up on this long before the record companies did. ua-cam.com/video/V0jt-2huWAg/v-deo.htmlsi=SZyyhGcna-8Q7pnk
These were among Brent's last shows as he died not long after the summer tour ended. By the fall Vince Welnick was picked as the new keyboard player, with Bruce Hornsby joining the band on a full time basis for just over a year at classic piano.
Many great and funky versions of this song to choose from. Personal favorite is 6/30/1985 from the Merriweather post pavilion in maryland. Next tune? Maybe franklins tower from 6/9/1977 winterland arena san fran, ca. You can easily find many high quality recordings. No video as far as i know.
Hello Biz, I thought I'd suggest another song by the GD, if interested. This is a studio version. "Grateful Dead - Franklin's Tower (2002 Remastered)" (by the channel: Grateful Dead) --This song is rich with imagery and metaphors. The lyrics were written by Robert Hunter. The beauty of the "Grateful Dead's" lyrics is that they were often left open to interpretation by the listener to find their own meaning of the song. It's always fun feeding the "Dead-heads" And as always, I enjoyed rocking with you, Biz. peace out~
Fun day.. a little shaky vocals at the beginning? Well... it WAS the start of the 1st set that day - it takes a little time to get warmed up... (side note: all the Shakedown's were 10-15 minutes long) - Ok; so you were groovin' on Brent (Keys) - here is a clip from October 1987 - of Brent singing his cover of The Meters "Hey Pocky Way" - enjoy ua-cam.com/video/aAAHJS7DfRE/v-deo.htmlsi=53aXP-KKc17STnXO - and this is Brent singing one of his own songs "Blow Away" - a VERY unique and important performance in July 1989 - this was the first time he "channeled the Pig" and began to rap his troubles in the tune - they had been playing it for about a year before he laid this on us and then he kept the rap (the story had variations as time went on) in the tune because of THIS performance and how we all got WAY WAY off on it - again fun stuff! enjoy ua-cam.com/video/MHU5FywUBEk/v-deo.htmlsi=9Sfp427qc530JwpU
Definitely I agree in the beginning they were trying to find it but once they poked around enough, they found the groove. Not the best version of the song I’ve ever heard live. That’s for sure. Sometimes it just starts out completely on fire and goes the whole way through like that. When you play as many nights a year as the Grateful Dead did you’re not gonna be playing perfect all the time. They’re not gonna always show up perfectly fresh and ready for action. But they always showed up and that’s the point. Imagine if you were sick or you just weren’t feeling well and maybe you only got two hours of sleep or maybe even no sleep at all and then you had to go play a show. You have to try to deliver no matter what. But that’s the thing about the Grateful Dead when they were on, they were on and I mean on fire. Sometimes the showswere lukewarm. But every show had some moment at least where they found the groove. I’ve seen a couple of shows where as soon as they hit the stage from the first song , first note they play and they’re ON! if you poke around their catalog of live shows enough every once in a while, you stumble upon either a crazy show or a crazy good version of a song. 🤯
Long time tour head 306 shows between 84 n 95 I like your style bro one of the better reaction channels… I have a few request US blues from October 74…China cat sunflower from Veneta Oregon Aug 72 And a Beatles cover why don’t we do it in the road from Philadelphia 85 all live performances that can be found on UA-cam thanks much look forward to it if you get around to it peace/one
Dilaudid sucks, especially with coacaine. I miss Brent. I never saw him live, 6/28/92 my first show, saw the band 24 times 92-95 wish I had understood sooner, Grateful 🙏 for the shows I saw.
You clearly "get" the Grateful Dead more than any other reactor. You should watch an entire show straight through. Pause between/during songs and sets as much as you want and talk, but do a whole show. Then you'll start to see how they went about it w/o a set list. There was a framework to the perceived randomness of a GD concert. Hell, there's bootleg videos of complete Grateful Dead shows shot from the taper's section starting around 1985. Red Rocks Amphitheater 9-5-85 comes to mind. There's also in-house, pro shot b/w video beginning in ~1976 of entire shows from The Capitol Theater in Passaic New Jersey. Color video for some acts by 1978.
Hey bro you should check out the dead and co versions of shakedown street and eyes of the world, they’re on UA-cam. John Mayer on lead guitar. It’s a lot tighter! Check it out!
That gritty blue-eyed soul voice of Brent was what did it! I hated the Keith/Donna years! But Brent was almost a mirror evil twin of another gritty blue-eyed soul singing keyboardist, Gregg Allman!
The way the musicians intended you to hear it. Studio is what you should hear first.!!! I’ve been very disappointed with a lot of bands as far as the quality of sounds at concert never the energy.!!
One of the rare exceptions. Most of the Grateful Dead's studio stuff is tough to listen to. It only serves as a blueprint where they get the lyrics, tempo, chords, key changes, etc., all nice and neat. "We don't sell albums, we sell tickets." --Jerry Garcia
@@FUBAR1986 Maybe with other bands but very much not the case with GD. They made studio albums because they had too. They hated doing it. The studio albums are lifeless frameworks that few heads ever listen(ed) to. Certainly not what the musicians intended for us to hear. Plus, most songs were road tested before they went on an album. GD studio albums were an afterthought.
@floorticket thank you for knowing what your talking about. Those above speaking about the studio version are not fans and don't have a clue as to what they are taking about.
Who is the one recommending these versions? … apparently they have no clue what they’re doing all this time.. there’s a whole list of shakedown Street performed that are better than this version, so what’s the point
Sadly, the keyboard player, Brent Mydland, passed away twelve days after this show at his home in California. RIP, Brent, RIP....

Are we just supposed to believe you, or do you have any proof? 🤔
I'm just kidding, that's really cool!!
Check out the studio version of this too
Excellent studio album from them.
The studio version of this was decidedly disco flavored but whenever I saw them do it live, it was pure funk.
Take a moment and give Phil some props.😎🌻
Phil 'er up!!!
RIP Phil 😭😭😭😭
Thank you thank you thank you for grateful Dead
Not their best rendition, but keep on keeping on.
Estimated Prophet is a great song by the Dead
Samson and Delilah too
I was at this show, about 75 back from center stage 😎
Welcome home

It was the opening song of the show ...this may account for the sound at the beginning....working on getting the perfect mix

An 'Eyes of the World' from the 1970s would be very much appreciated, especially '73 or '74. Cheers
I first saw them in Boston in 1967.
Love to hear your reaction to the ‘74 Garcia Hart original “Fire on the Mountain” 5 years before “Rappers Delight”
Check out 4/2/89 Pittsburgh for a phenomenal shakedown.
One of the few dead songs that sound just as good in the studio version

I say it all the time--- the absolute GOATS. Thanks Biz!
Try 'Box of Rain', the lyrics are incomprehensible but still beautiful. And a groovy melody.
They sound like they just woke up.
[EDIT: The coffee kind of kicked-in for them by the end.]
We are back!
Old home of The New England Patriots! Caught a GREAT Shakedown at my very first Dead show, 9/6/80, Lewiston, Maine. But then, they were all GREAT!
You are becoming one of us. Better watch out you'll be a head yet🎉❤
