  • My very first watch review video! Welcome to the Ordinary Watch Guy channel - today we'll talk about Nomadic and their dive watch, the Marai 401. How does it cut it in the incredible £1000 micro-brand watch market?

Great first video! You're the first fellow I've seen doing watch reviews who is Irish, too. I'm interested in seeing your future content.
Personally, I wouldn't put Nomadic in the same category as San Martin because San Martin is a Chinese company. In terms of quality, the only Asian watch companies that are high quality to me are those from Japan. Nomadic uses Swiss movements, which are much better than Chinese movements.

Hi Laura thank you! I tend to think the same about the San Martin. I probably will get one to satisfy my curiosity and prove it - but I think people putting the Nomadic down as a priced up San Martin probably aren't as invested in seeing an Irish watch house succeed! Check out Oisin O'Malley's channel though. He does great reviews and he looked at the Nomadic Marai too. Grateful for the encouragement!

Congrats on your first wtach video. What are your thoughts on this just being a rebadged San Martin that is partially assembled in Belfast? I live near these guys and have struggled to make the leap given what I can get with Traska or for a bit more with Monta. My attitude has always been a thousand here and 800 there subtracts from saving for something higher end, but I have a real microbrand softspot and oen a Yema Superman.

I am really interested in that too - I think I will probably end up doing a video laying a San Martin and a Nomadic right next to each other to see what the difference is. On the spec sheet there are core differences, but they're subtle, in the hand? I don't know because I haven't held a San Martin yet. The Yema Superman is an attractive watch - I particularly like the GMT variant (with the scales bracelet too!). The microbrand market is so fierce at that price point!

Yeah man, there are 4-5 really strong competitors in the area where you couldn’t go wrong.
As example if you bumped it to around £2k, I’d rather have a Monta Skyqust GMT over more mainstream brands.

It looks like a san martin rebranded watch copy of tudor buy a glycine combat sub Swiss made Swiss seleta sw200 movement not a copy a watch with reel history 5.75 euros from glycine eu

Pretender. It’s a junk Tudor copy whereby the changes they made are naff. Just save & buy the real thing. Sorry.

Hi mate - thanks for commenting! Personally I think that's harsh, I love the watch (honestly) but would it compare with a Tudor Black Bay? No and it shouldn't (it's a £1000 watch versus a £3500 watch). It doesn't make it junk and whether you think the changes are naff - well that's a matter of personal taste. But thanks for watching and commenting! I'm grateful!
