I am so glad for Ben! (Thinking Basketball) He is an incredible basketball mind. Very well deserved, to be working directly with the NBA! Best regards Ben!
It's a shame they won't give someone like Basketball Examined any time, because he exposes some NBA partners or some people working with those partners.
The reason Jokic is so underrated is because it actually takes having some basketball knowledge to understand his greatness. Unfortunately, "fans" who only dedicate experiencing basketball with just watching 3 second highlight clips on social media are the ones with the loudest mouths.
It's not even the fans, it's the buffoons on TV who clearly are just there to collect a paycheck and to create/stir drama while having no desire or ability to analyze the game or to interpret stats. It's watered down to the lowest common denominator.

We definitely need more content like this from the NBA. Highlight culture has really taken over basketball and sports in general. More analytical context would give the average basketball fan more insight and a better understanding of players and their game.
It sickens me when it's a white player (star or role player), he is always characterized as "smart", "savant", " has a great feel for the game", "understands the game"...but when a black player does the exact same things the focus is on his athleticism and physical talent unless it's a HOF type player. Jokic is a great passer but what is described in this video as "savant" is done by basketball players (especially PGs) in every single game.
First of all congrats to Ben for making the leap to the NBA Channel. Second, Jokic is impossible to describe in words. His understanding and gamesmanship is spectacular; it's incredible to watch someone so mechanical and unorthodox dominate the way he does.
- All time level passer and playmaker / high-end scorer in post, midrange and spot up. - Dangerous on and off the ball / pick n pop + roll weapon as scorer and passer - Dynamic, versatile weapon / Elite offensive rebounder. Superb.
Ben's level of analysis, attention to detail and explaining of advanced metrics is what is missing in almost every mainstream form of NBA Media coverage. Props to the NBA for promoting him, this is the type of basketball content that any fan of basketball deserves!
Fr ESPN and Fox Sports will give a dude like Jokic props out of obligation but they won't actually break down, appreciate, and explain what makes him so great. The only analysts I've seen that have really taken Jokic seriously and fully appreciated his game are Ben Taylor as well as a lot of the guys over at the Ringer such as KOC, Bill Simmons, and J. Kyle Mann. Only guys I've seen at ESPN that have shown him some love are Jalen Rose and David Jacoby.
@@SoloPerICommenti bball breakdown would focus on actual plays a little bit more. Bball breakdown was more helpful if you played 5 vs 5 basketball and you wanted to implement what bball was talking about in your actual games. Thinking basketball is more of a spectator approach. But other than that, I find thinking basketball and bball breakdown to be very similar.
Jokic is basically the best center and the best guard in the nba right now. He's also my MVP favorite by a large margin. The man's basketball mind is off the charts.
Without Jamal and MPJ, he have 26/14/8 on crazy efficiency, he have better season than his MVP season last year, most tripple doubles in season 10, and aprox. 7-8 games short by one assist or rebound. He leads Nuggets in every possible stat category. He have 4 games with 20+/20+ 🤯in this season, and 49pts tripple double🤯 By advanced stat, no.1 by far in whole NBA, he have best PER in entire NBA history! Not just that he is the best center in NBA, but the best player in NBA, by all measures! Man revolutionized center position! Back to back MVP🃏🔥🃏🔥🃏🔥
Its funny because early on my NBA viewing I always viewed point guards like Stockton as stalwarts for efficiency and their playmaking as hubs of offense for their teams. Then you watch taller wings who try play the same way but add more to to their game because of what that length offers. Rarely do you get a combination of a player whose got that height who can see half the court but also find their teammates accurately cutting to the hoop or open for the jumper out by the perimeter. But also have the basic consistent tricks like entry passes and outlet passes that make a tall big valuable on the offense. Then there is Jokic.
This kind of player u can see once in your lifetime, maybe never again... We fans should be honored to watch this genius of game, everything he does is poetry... unstoppable force...
Another thing, I'm glad that somebody recognizes the genius of players like joker. Most people are enamored by ball dominant players, but true basketball IQ recognizes the genius of Larry bird, nikola, and even players like Bill walton. Players who played the game the right way
@@DrewDowns6791 Those two are more open court on ball passers. Walton, Bird and Jokic have that same court vision but are better passing on the move and in rhythm of the offense. Matters a lot too because those 3 players are very good post up players so often they are working on tricky angles (that helps of course by being MAD tall) so they have to be able to deliver precise passes with such limited space as they invite double/triple teams. In Jokic's case he's zipping them with accuracy from where he posts up across the corner AND the opposite elbow area. Also Jokic's ability to fool defenses with his eyes is QB level material. Its fun to watch because its more apparent (being a tall guy and all) and its fun seeing defenders from the opposite side of the half court start moving in concert with the guy they are guarding while looking at Jokic and then the ball just ends up at a place they didn't think to look at and it turns to a score.
@@DrewDowns6791 you're right. Magic should be on that list as well. I see LeBron's top 10 all time iq. I don't see him as top 5. But he's up there mindless
This man has changed the way I see basketball and given me an even greater respect for the sport I love. Give this man all the money and all the collabs
Amazing collab with one of the guys pushing out thoughtful content. Joker even in the realm of amazing post passing bigs like Walton and Bird is his own pantheon. He has the consistent ability to deliver surgical zips to cutters and even displays the precise touch passing like a Legend. At times his shot can also blend as a shot attempt to further work up the illusion. But all this is wrapped up in consistent execution and efficiency that makes him an important offensive hub to his team. These new school bigs want to come into the league with their wing like skills want to call themselves unicorns. But Big Honey has been showing all that skill at an elite level for 2-3 seasons straight and no other prospective new school big has come close. Jokic is most certainly in his own galaxy when it comes to a display of his virtuoso.
@@respectedlocalgentleman7108 Bird was 6"9 or 6"10 so within one or two inches of Jokic. also LOL about the Gasol Brothers being better passer than Walton.
@@busterkeaton1001 Toni Kukoc was 6'11" and he wasn't a big. Dirk Nowitzki was 7'0". Neither are bigs. Bird was 6'9". Just like Magic. Neither are bigs. LeBron is 6'8". Need I go further? Both Gasol's ran offenses from the top of the key. Walton was a secondary distributor from the pivot. Your commentary is indeed worthy of a Buster Keaton monologue. Type less. Read more.
@@busterkeaton1001 Its not necessarily the detail of his verticality that lumped him there along with Walton and Jokic. But in Thinking Basketball's Bird prime vid most of his damage on offense was posting up. So he was always in that position to zip to cutters, pull a post move to pass or shoot or go for his fade away jumper. Basically a lot of stuff Jokic has in his game but works much better for him as a burly 7 footer. Including easily fighting for offensive rebounds and putbacks.
@@HomoErectus311 maybe in some fantasy land. In reality he is neither. He will finish his career looking up at Jokic in every imaginable stat and achievement.
@@HomoErectus311 Better scorer and defender, sure, although Jokic is as multifaceted and dynamic in scoring as Embiid. He's not that far off. On the other hand, Embiid is not even close to being close to Jokic as a passer and playmaker. Simple box score stats like assists or even assist to TOs don't capture how vast the gulf in ability is between the two. Jokic is comfortably among the most elite passers and playmakers in the history of the game. To have a basketball mind like that in the body of a true center is just incredible.
I was just telling my mom yesterday about how if thinking basketball youtube channel were around 10 years ago when basketball was my favorite thing in the world. It would be my favorite internet content period. The channel is literally what I craved as a basketball fan growing up but could never find.
What a great video! NBA needs more content like this on the official channel! Jokić is a savant in the most extreme meaning of the word. He sees the game through a different dimension than all other players. So so rarely in the history of basketball have we seen such talent.

Thinking Basketball = good, scientific and honest basketball analysis, not pushed or influenced by any ongoing narrative, keep it the collaboration going NBA
He's phenomenal and somehow still going under the radar. Thinking Basketball is great and it's awesome that Jokic is getting highlighted here. All time great level stuff by the Joker, should absolutely be at the top of MVP discussions. 26 points, nearly 14 rebounds, and 7.5 assists a game... I understand that his has limitations on defense, although he definitely isn't awful by any means (intelligent limited by athletic mobility) but this is unheard of at his position. Point Center!
This season Jokic's currently at the top or near the top on almost all defensive advanced metrics (above guys like Giannis and Embiid, by the way). His positional defense and the way he causes deflections more than compensate for his relative lack of rim protection. The narrative that Joker is a liability on defense needs to finally go wherever narratives go to die.
@@nighthiker Jokic is a good defender, but most of the defensive metrics you're referring to aren't very good (i.e. the ones that he's at the top of the league in). Defensive RAPTOR, Defensive Box plus-minus and Defensive Win Shares rely too heavily on the box score, and Defensive Rating fails to adjust for teammate and opponent quality. Defensive LEBRON and Defensive EPM are generally regarded as much better, and Jokic doesn't rank as highly in those. He's barely top 50 in D-EPM, and 23rd in D-LEBRON. Not saying he's a bad defender, in fact I'd argue he's actually good now. But he's definitely not one of the best defenders in the league.

This is the high quality analysis that is great for the sport. Interesting for both the casual and hardcore fan. Ben analyzes the game in a very digestible manner and would love to see the NBA continue to support his channel in any way.
When commentators talking about Jokić, just remember with what names they compare him. Playmaking like Magic, CP3, Jason Kidd. Shooting like Dirk and Duncan from mid range. Post game and foot work like Hakeem. Passing OMG not compared with Sabonis anymore, but best poinguards ever. Dude is combination of best centers ever, best playmakers ever, best PF's ever!
Take all traits of a pass first efficient point guard and combine it with the fundamental play of a big man along with one of a kind court vision and the technique to set up passes at various spots all over the court. I hate to say it but its better than watching PGs and wing players dime up their teammates.
I don’t usually leave comments on UA-cam videos but I had to support my guy Ben. His analysis is the closest thing to objectivity that I’ve ever seen and is a breath of fresh air compared to what’s on TV right now. He’s literally changing the game. I don’t even think Stephen A. stands a chance against him in an argument. NBA, give this guy a chance and he will prove that basketball analysis can be taken to another level.
Ben at Thinking Basketball produces the best NBA content on UA-cam (no offense @NBA). So mad props to ya'll for giving him recognition and a wider audience. Yes please to seeing more.
Thinking Basketball keeps me more interested in the game of basketball than anyone else out there. Ben Taylor almost single-handedly kept me watching NBA content during the pandemic shutdowns with his videos and podcasts. He should be one of the main faces of basketball analysis!
He's the definition of most "Valuable" player. In Russian we have a word "полезный" to describe players like Jokic who play in team sports, the translation comes out "useful". Jokic is the type of player that whenever he's on the court, his sheer presence is useful/valuable for his team. He doesn't have to score or have the ball in his hands to have an impact. I could only think of handful of players in NBA history you could say that about. He's like a more complete version of Tim Duncan in a sense, you could play him with any supporting cast and I feel like they would mesh well. I don't think I can even say the same thing about Durant or Harden. I even feel like Mike Malone underestimated and under utilized him because he's so selfless, they ran the offense more through Jamal Murray, but he's legit a much better scorer than Murray. Even in his rookie and Sophmore years, his PER, offensive and defensive rating per 100 possessions, win shares were all in the elite category. Amazing player, a joy to watch, he should be back to back MVP and the analytics back it up, a 33.1 PER would be the best in NBA history. Also don't underestimate Serbian athletes, they're beasts. I have no doubt he'll play at a high level for a long time.
He’s number 1 on the MVP list as we speak so he’s not underrated there especially since he has a 41-45% chance of winning the MVP again this year and 2nd place is down to 15-17% and 3rd place is 7%
@@giannisfamily779 if you think jokic is stat padding you're a moron. Just look at his advanced stats. He's way more efficient and impactful on offense than westbrook was

Thank you NBA, he’s the best offensive player in the game rn for sure, and probably the best overall player too with his improved defense. With Championships I think he can be a top 10 player of all time.
@@HomoErectus311 The first few years of his career he was under utilized and his usage rate was quite low. His offensive rating per 100 possessions, points per 36min are all better than Lebron's and KD's and were at the same point in their careers, despite a lower usage rate.
There's a difference in reactions when you watch Nikola compared to lots of other NBA greats. When I watch players like Lebron, or any Top 5 NBA action with lots of power dunks and so on, I'm in an awe of how strong, skillful and athletic these guys are and my usual reaction is: Wow. When I watch Jokic, my reaction is much more complex: 1. a smile on my face, 2. how the hell did he do it / what's just happened 3. I'm in an awe of this guy.

This was awesome. I appreciate the understanding of the intrinsic understanding of what makes great basketball and not just highlight dunks and deep three's. Jokic is unreal. I can't wait until Murray is healthy again as well!!
I feel bad for the sports cameramen who needs to track the ball while Jokic just nonchalantly yeets the ball to a player across the court where they are not paying attention, especially when Jokic wasn't known as one of the best passers in the league yet.
Yes please more of this!!! Thinking Basketball is the best basketball content out there and it would be great to have more of this kind of analysis on the NBA channel too. Gives people a greater appreciation for the game I think
Nikola Jokic, known also by the cognomen "Big Honey", "the stretch mark Five", and the honourific "MVP", and often times referred to as "The Joker", is the floor general of the Denver/Colorado Baskteball Team - The Denver Nuggets.
Dear NBA, Do MORE of this. Analysis like this is EXACTLY what many of us fans have been wanting. Please bring in more analysts that actually anaylize the game.
This makes me wonder. Imagine if Jokic had the athleticism of the likes of Olajuwon... We would actually be watching a 'cannot-be-defeated' kind of player. It would be crazy!
Jokic is so underrated. One of the best offensive players of all time. His passing is genius, great shooter and post player. If he gets some help they will win a championship.
Maybe the best ever..till 2 months later there will be another bestie best!every two months people go up and down the best ever categories from people who have seen the best ever basketball in the last 5 years!
I'm so lucky to be a Nuggets fan right now! Watching him live is even more spectacular as you see how incredible his decision-making is at full speed (or Jokic-speed). And the best part is his game is going to age really well. I think we have another solid decade of MVP-level Jokic in Denver... I just hope Murray and MPJ can comeback healthy and we got a real title shot in the next few years!
This was incredible. Big Jokic fan, and the depth of analysis helped me get my head around why some of the stuff he does looks so different and is so effective. It was also neat highlighting some of the players from the league's past and showing the through line between their games and what's going on with the best in the league today. Great stuff.
Jokic winning back to back MVPs (which seems pretty likely at this point) will not only solidify him as one of this generation's best players, but as one of the greatest to ever do it. He's completely redefined what it means to be an NBA center and is one of the most well-rounded players the game has ever seen. This is the best analysis of the Joker's play that you will find anywhere. Period.
I’m glad you mentioned his Waterpolo background. This has led to his soft touch & great passing & being comfortable keeping the ball above his head (when most would bring the ball down to generate power/speed).
I mean much like height in the NBA, a soft touch can't be taught. Even in Water polo the elite passers/scorers with that rare trait to make just moving the ball in that sport that much easier. In the NBA big men with soft touch around the rim and can score have very high ceilings they can reach. Even rarer for said rare big men to also have that touch for playmaking as well.
I have been playing water polo for 10 years and I can confirm that the Joker's ball movements with one hand (especially when he has the ball over his head) are very similar to water polo techniques. Also, the Joker himself said that he played H2Opolo in his young days. Maybe not in a competitive way, but it is obvious that it helped him control the ball in the basketball game.
Props to the NBA page for seeing and employing the brilliance of the “THINKING BASKETBALL” channel. It’s about time and he breaks down the game in an incredible way, all people can learn from him
👍Great! Now this is the kind of stuff that I like. One of my favorite NBA content creators on UA-cam getting the recognition he deserves, talking about my compatriot, and one of the best basketball players to ever play the game.

The only analysts I've seen that have really taken Jokic seriously and fully appreciated his game are Ben Taylor as well as a lot of the guys over at the Ringer such as KOC, Bill Simmons, and J. Jokic is basically the best center and the best guard in the nba right now. He's also my MVP favorite by a large margin. The man's basketball mind is off the charts.
he has an unimaginable feel for the game, can't believe players like him can get drafted so late in his draft class
Without Jamal and MPJ, he have 26/14/8 on crazy efficiency, he have better season than his MVP season last year, most tripple doubles in season 10, and aprox. 7-8 games short by one assist or rebound.
He leads Nuggets in every possible stat category. He have 4 games with 20+/20+ 🤯in this season, and 49pts tripple double🤯
By advanced stat, no.1 by far in whole NBA, he have best PER in entire NBA history!
As a Denver homer who has been saying this for like 4 years it makes me sooo happy that it's finally being recognized.

Another thing, I'm glad that somebody recognizes the genius of players like joker. Most people are enamored by ball dominant players, but true basketball IQ recognizes the genius of Larry bird, nikola, and even players like Bill walton. Players who played the game the right way
Magic Johnson. Lebron James. Etc
@@DrewDowns6791 Reggie Miller and Curry, too.
@@kingcam0775 Currbrick is overrated.

0.8 blocks a game historically bad for a center
@@HomoErectus311 decent steals and deflections tho
7.5 assists per game to g-league players, if Murray and MPJ were playing he would have like 5-5.5 more per game

@@DukeOfChevo Hmm, maybe a secret training tech for big men? And since it's in water, easy on the joints, and good for conditioning.
