Every horse is shaped differently and responds to different spurs in a variety of ways. I am tall, and on big horses I might wear a different spur that on a smaller horse. It would depend how my lower leg makes contact with the horse. I also have horses who prefer a rowel and not a prince of wales, or they might like a nubby but nothing else. Also, how they go at home verses a show is another consideration. One of my horses is a bit lazier at home but a rocket at the show, so at home I might use a spur with a little more feel and at the show either no spur or a nubby. Hope that makes sense. I probly have 6 or 7 pairs and five horses.
